Nutrient Recycling: Rural On-Site Wastewater Disposal And Treatment In Can Tho City, Viet Nam, Micah Johnson Oct 2006

Nutrient Recycling: Rural On-Site Wastewater Disposal And Treatment In Can Tho City, Viet Nam, Micah Johnson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In order to research a topic a holistic perspective is important. Often experiments are performed absent from the environment that is being observed. It is like thrusting one’s hand into an ocean to grope around for a specimen, extract it, and examine it apart from its native habitat. Although this is possible and often primarily the method, to immerse oneself into where one is studying is to increase one’s ability to obtain a more holistic perspective. I have come to believe that the more practical and accurate scientific experiments are a combination of laboratories and on the field. Not only …

Viz: A Visual Analysis Suite For Explaining Local Search Behavior, Steven Halim, Roland H. C. Yap, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems are common in real life. Due to their intractability, local search algorithms are often used to solve such problems. Since these algorithms are heuristic-based, it is hard to understand how to improve or tune them. We propose an interactive visualization tool, VIZ, meant for understanding the behavior of local search. VIZ uses animation of abstract search trajectories with other visualizations which are also animated in a VCR-like fashion to graphically playback the algorithm behavior. It combines generic visualizations applicable on arbitrary algorithms with algorithm and problem specific visualizations. We use a variety of techniques such as …

Two-Instant Reallocation In Two-Echelon Spare Parts Inventory Systems, Huawei Song, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the problem of deciding when and how to perform reallocation of existing spare parts in a multi-echelon reparable item inventory system. We present a mathematical model that solves the problem when there are two reallocation instants, in response to the open challenge post by Cao and Silver(2005) to consider two or more possible reallocations within a replenishment cycle.

Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions By Multiple Frequency Applied Saado Jets, A. Şamil Demirsöz Oct 2006

Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions By Multiple Frequency Applied Saado Jets, A. Şamil Demirsöz

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Flow separation over lifting aerodynamic components, such as airfoils and wings, occurs during stall conditions which are caused by adverse changes (i.e.; high angle of attack, inflow conditions, etc.) in the operating conditions of aerodynamic components. During stall conditions, the flow over airfoil loses its momentum, creating high pressure zones on the upper surface of the airfoil and even a small increase in pressure causes the fluid particles to stop and separate to a low pressure zone. In order to eliminate the flow separation, the low momentum flow should be removed in order to maintain the high momentum and low …

A Study Correlating Entropy Generation To Parameters Characterizing Thermal Comfort In A Conditioned Room, Sai Shrinivas Sreedharan Oct 2006

A Study Correlating Entropy Generation To Parameters Characterizing Thermal Comfort In A Conditioned Room, Sai Shrinivas Sreedharan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Although significant advances have been made to analyze and study a room as an open thermodynamic system experiencing indoor airflow and heat exchanges with surroundings, studies incorporating entropy generation in the analysis have been sparse. This study focuses on correlating indoor thermal comfort with entropy generation, which hopefully will result in efficient utilization of energy supplied to the system. The problem that this thesis attempts to solve involves calculation of entropy production in conditioned space and its correlation to parameters that characterize thermal comfort. Thermal comfort in a conditioned space is governed by many thermal, mechanical and psychrometric parameters. The …

An Empirical Investigation Into The Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence, Use Of Knowledge Transfer Methods, And Project Performance, Brent Michael Decker Oct 2006

An Empirical Investigation Into The Relationships Between Emotional Intelligence, Use Of Knowledge Transfer Methods, And Project Performance, Brent Michael Decker

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Increasingly, the use of project teams is becoming commonplace within organizations as the primary means to accomplish complex tasks. While the literature has long acknowledged that the knowledge transfer process is a key component in achieving organizational success and ultimately sustaining a competitive advantage, very little has been written that specifically examines the knowledge transfer process at the project team level. In an attempt to increase the understanding of knowledge transfer processes at the project team level, the effect that a relatively new construct, termed emotional intelligence, has on the use of knowledge transfer methods is examined. The relationships between …

Excimer Uv Radiation From A Cylindrical Dielectric Barrier Discharge, Sudhakar Reddy Alla Oct 2006

Excimer Uv Radiation From A Cylindrical Dielectric Barrier Discharge, Sudhakar Reddy Alla

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Excimer lamps are intense non-coherent radiation sources, which emit UV or VUV radiation in a narrow wavelength range. The operation of these excimer lamps depends on the decomposition of excimers that are created in various non-equilibrium discharge plasmas. Excimer lamps mainly use rare gases or rare gas halides as the excimers formed by them emit radiation either in the UV or VUV region. This was confirmed in this work by observing the spectrum of the discharge in neon, krypton and chlorine gas mixture formed in a cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (C-DBD). CDBD's, which are non-equilibrium discharges, are used to generate …

Design And Realization Of A Single Stage Sigma-Delta Adc With Low Oversampling Ratio, Yongjie Cheng Sep 2006

Design And Realization Of A Single Stage Sigma-Delta Adc With Low Oversampling Ratio, Yongjie Cheng

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the rapid growth of the communication market, a large amount of research is in process toward a high speed and high resolution sigma-delta A/D converter. This dissertation focuses on the design of a single-stage sigma-delta A/D converter with very low oversampling ratio for the wireless application. An architecture for a multibit single-stage delta-sigma A/D converter with two-step quantization is proposed. Both the MSB and LSB signals produced by the two-step quantization are fed back simultaneously to all integrator stages, making it suitable for low oversampling ratios. The two-step ADC avoids the problem that the complexity of an internal …

Enhancement Of Crystal Growth And Superconducting Properties Of Melt-Textured Yba2cu3o7−X Through Addition Of Baceo3 And Basno3, Oratai Jongprateep, Fatih Dogan Sep 2006

Enhancement Of Crystal Growth And Superconducting Properties Of Melt-Textured Yba2cu3o7−X Through Addition Of Baceo3 And Basno3, Oratai Jongprateep, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of additions of BaSnO3 in combination with BaCeO3 on the microstructure, crystal growth and superconducting properties of melt-textured YBa2Cu3O7−x (Y123) have been investigated. It has been reported that the addition of BaCeO3 to Y123 results in an increase in the critical current density. However, higher cerium concentrations affect the solidification process and inhibit the growth of melt-textured Y123 single crystals. BaSnO3 has been shown to restore the properties of Y123 with BaCeO3 additives. Increasing the amount of added BaSnO3 leads to refinement of Y211 particles, enhancement of …

A New Method For Determination Of Most Likely Landslide Initiation Points And The Evaluation Of Digital Terrain Model Scale In Terrain Stability Mapping, P. Tarolli, David G. Tarboton Sep 2006

A New Method For Determination Of Most Likely Landslide Initiation Points And The Evaluation Of Digital Terrain Model Scale In Terrain Stability Mapping, P. Tarolli, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper introduces a new approach for determining the most likely initiation points for landslides from potential instability mapped using a terrain stability model. This approach identifies the location with critical stability index from a terrain stability model on each downslope path from ridge to valley. Any measure of terrain stability may be used with this approach, which here is illustrated using results from SINMAP, and from simply taking slope as an index of potential instability. The relative density of most likely landslide initiation points within and outside mapped landslide scars provides a way to evaluate the effectiveness of a …

Evaluation And Engineering Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae For Cellulase Expression And Growth On Insoluble Cellulose, John Mcbride Sep 2006

Evaluation And Engineering Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae For Cellulase Expression And Growth On Insoluble Cellulose, John Mcbride

Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports

The conversion of cellulosic biomass into fuels and chemicals promises to be a major revolution for the United States economy, but is dependent on the advancement of low-cost conversion technology. Of the natural resources available to human societies, biomass is one of the most abundant, and is the sole sustainable source of organic fuels, chemicals, and materials [1]. Biomass derived fuels and chemicals can achieve net zero carbon emissions on a lifecycle basis, provide substantial income to rural communities, and eliminate the security issues associated with fossil resources. Cellulosic biomass (wood, grass, agricultural residues, etc.) can be produced cheaply and …

A Data Fusion Approach To Automated Vehicle Detector Testing, C. A. Maccarley, N. Nesse, J. Slonaker

Electrical Engineering

Vehicle presence detectors have become critical elements of traffic management systems, including applications ranging from intersection signal control to freeway congestion monitoring. The need to assess the accuracy and attributes of each of the many types of sensors motivated the California Department of Transportation to construct the Traffic Detector Testbed on I-405 in Southern California. With up to ten detectors of different types under concurrent test in each of six lanes, a means for automating the testing process became imperative, since traditional human-verification methods were not practical. This paper describes the design and implementation of an automated data acquisition and …
