Research outputs pre 2011

Reconfigurablele optical interconnects enable flexible and high-performance communication in multi-chip architectures to be arbitrarily adapted, leading to efficient parallel signal processing. The use of Opto-VLSI processors as beam steerers and multicasters for reconfigurable inter-chip optical interconnection is discussed. We demonstrate, as proof-of-concept, 2.5 Gbps reconfigurable optical interconnects between an 850nm vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) array and a photodiode (PD) array integrated onto a PCB by driving two Opto-VLSI processors with steering and multicasting digital phase holograms. The architecture is experimentally demonstrated through three scenarios showing its flexibility to perform single, multicasting, and parallel reconfigurable optical interconnects. To our …

Opto-Vlsi-Based Correlator Architecture For Multiwavelength Optical Header Recognition, Muhsen Aljada, Kamal E. Alameh, Khalid Al-Begain

Research outputs pre 2011

A novel optical correlator employing an opto-very-large-scale-integration (VLSI) processor to construct the routing lookup table, in conjunction with an array of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for multiwavelength optical header recognition is demonstrated. The FBG array provides wavelength-dependent time delays, whereas the opto-VLSI processor generates wavelength intensity profiles that match arbitrary bit patterns. The recognition of 4-b optical patterns is experimentally demonstrated at 2.2 Gb/s by showing that the correlator produces an autocorrelation waveform of high peak whenever the input bit pattern matches the wavelength intensity profile.

Dynamic Optical Comb Filter Using Opto-Vlsi Processing, Zhenglin Wang, Kamal Alameh, Rong Zheng, Chung Poh

Research outputs pre 2011

Reconfigurable multi-channel optical filters are presented in this paper. The operation principle of the reconfigurable filter is based on the dynamic beam steering capacity of Opto-VLSI processor in conjunction with a high dispersion free space grating. The dispersion grating separates the input signal spectrum while the Opto-VLSI processor is driven by optimised phase holograms to dynamically select the wavelengths to be coupled into the output port. Experimental results show that up to 8 bands can be synthesised, with a wavelength tuning span of 10 nm and a 3dB bandwidth less than 0.5nm.

Reconfigurable Photonic Rf Filter Based On Opto-Vlsi Processing, Rong Zheng, Kamal Alameh, Zhenglin Wang

Research outputs pre 2011

In this paper, a novel reconfigurable 5-tap photonic RF filter based on Opto-VLSI processor is proposed where an Opto-VLSI processor is used in conjunction with a 5-fibre Bragg grating (FBG) array to slice the spectrum of a broad band light source, thus achieving commensurate true-time delays and variable tap weights. The proposed photonic RF filterstructure is experimentally demonstrated by means of several examples which show the capability of the Opto-VLSI processor to synthesise transversal RF filter responses with adaptive weights.

Joint Optimization In Capacity Design Of Networks With P-Cycle Using The Fundamental Cycle Set, Hoang Nguyen, Daryoush Habibi, Viet Q Phung, Stefan Lachowicz, Kungmang Lo, Byung Kang

Research outputs pre 2011

We propose a joint optimization model for capacity design of networks with p-cycles. The model is based on a modified definition of network fundamental cycles and the available straddling links. Concepts about visible and hidden straddling links, which are essential components of our model are also introduced. This is the first ILP model for joint optimization of p-cycle network that can be solved without enumerating p-cycle candidates, and has the ability to achieve optimum solutions. In addition, the complexity of our proposed model is much smaller than any conventional models, particularly when applying to a planar network. This model is …

A Hybrid P-Cycle Search Algorithm For Protection In Wdm Mesh Networks, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Alexander Rassau, Quoc Viet Phung, Hoang Nguyen, Byung Kang

Research outputs pre 2011

p-Cycle is a type of shared link protection for survivable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks. p-Cycle not only retains ring-like restoration speeds, but also achieves capacity efficiency in mesh networks. However, finding the optimal set of p-cycles to protect all traffic demands within a reasonable response time is difficult. This is particularity true with dense meshes or large networks, because the number of candidates is huge. Generally, p-cycles are determined by using either Integer Linear Programming (ILP) or specifically designed heuristic algorithms. However, both methods need a set of efficient candidate cycles to tradeoff between the computational time and the …

Efficient P-Cycle Design By Heuristic P-Cycle Selection And Refinement For Servivable Wdm Mesh Networks, Kungmang Lo, Daryoush Habibi, Quoc Viet Phung, Alexander Rassau, Hoang N. Nguyen

Research outputs pre 2011

Using p-Cycles to protect against single span failures in Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks has been widely studied. p-Cycle retains not only the speed of ring-like restoration, but also achieves the capacity efficiency over mesh networks. However, in selecting an optimal set of p-cycles to achieve the minimum spare capacity and fast computational time is an NP-hard problem. To address this issue, we propose a heuristic approach to iteratively select and refine a set of p-cycles, which contains two algorithms: the Heuristic p-Cycle Selection (HPS) algorithm, and the Refine Selected Cycles (RSC) algorithm. Our simulation results show that the proposed approach …

A Segmentation Method For Shared Protection In Wdm Networks, Quoc Viet Phung, Daryoush Habibi, Hoang Nguyen, Kungmeng Lo

Research outputs pre 2011

Shared link and shared path protections have been recognized as preferred schemes to protect traffic flows against network failures. In recent years, another method referred to as Shared Segment Protection has been studied as an alternative solution for protection. This method is more flexible and efficient in terms of capacity utilization and restoration time. However, to our best knowledge, this method has mostly been studied in dynamic provisioning scenarios in which searching for restoration paths is dynamically performed after a failure has occurred. In this paper, based on the path segmentation idea, we propose a method to generate good candidate …

Multiagent Teamwork: Hybrid Approaches, Praveen Paruchuri, Emma Bowring, Ranjit Nair, Jonathan Pearce, Nathan Schurr, Milind Tambe, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Today within the multiagent community, we see at least four competing methods to building multiagent systems: beliefdesireintention (BDI), distributed constraint optimization (DCOP), distributed POMDPs, and auctions or game-theoretic methods. While there is exciting progress within each approach, there is a lack of cross-cutting research. This article highlights the various hybrid techniques for multiagent teamwork developed by the teamcore group. In particular, for the past decade, the TEAMCORE research group has focused on building agent teams in complex, dynamic domains. While our early work was inspired by BDI, we will present an overview of recent research that uses DCOPs and distributed …

A course in the Fundamentals of Building Construction has been a curricular requirement of the Civil Engineering Technology Program (CET) since its inception. This course was taught traditionally as an on-campus class. Over the last ten years, the CET program has expanded to contain an extensive distance learning component, with at least half of the enrollment located off campus. The model for the typical distance-learning class is to meet for three hours, once a week, with a fully interactive (voice) live class. In consideration of the demand of a growing distance learning system, it was decided to restructure this class …

A Comparison Between Frequent Out-Of-Class Assignments And Frequent In-Class Assessments Relative To Student Performance In A Sophomore Level Electrical Circuit Analysis Course, Isaac Flory, Christian Hearn

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Two parallel sections of a sophomore level circuit analysis course in Electrical Engineering Technology were structured to provide insight to the marginal utility of out-of-class assignments versus in-class assessments in academic performance. Student distributions for each section, the classroom model, the composition of the common tests and exam, and grading formats are discussed. The data presented and the conditions of the resulting observations indicate the model which favored out-of-class assignments led to improved test scores.

Dissertations and Theses

The application of Moore's Law would not be feasible by using the computing systems fabrication principles that are prevalent today. Fundamental changes in the field of computing are needed to keep Moore's Law operational. Different quantum technologies are available to take the advancement of computing into the future. Logic in quantum technology uses gates that are very different from those used in contemporary technology. Limiting itself to reversible operations, this thesis presents different methods to realize these logic gates. Two methods using Generalized Ternary Gates and Muthukrishnan Stroud Gates are presented for synthesis of ternary logic gates. Realizations of well-known …

Analysis Of Relay-Based Cellular Systems, Ansuya Negi Jan 2006

Analysis Of Relay-Based Cellular Systems, Ansuya Negi

Dissertations and Theses

Relays can be used in cellular systems to increase coverage as well as reduce the total power consumed by mobiles in a cell. This latter benefit is particularly useful for mobiles operating on a depleted battery. The relay can be a mobile, a car or any other device with the appropriate communication capabilities. In thesis we analyze the impact of using relays under different situations. We first consider the problem of reducing total power consumed in the system by employing relays intelligently. We find that in a simulated, fully random, mobile cellular network for CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), significant …

Active Noise Control Of Stageloader Noise In Longwall Mining, Jeremy M. Slagley, Steven Guffey Jan 2006

Active Noise Control Of Stageloader Noise In Longwall Mining, Jeremy M. Slagley, Steven Guffey

Faculty Publications

With the large-scale mechanization inherent to the mining industry, noise-induced hearing loss remains a major concern. As part of on-going efforts to develop engineering controls to reduce noise levels in longwall mining, active noise control experiments were conducted above ground on a modified non-working stageloader. Recorded underground stageloader noise was broadcast into the above ground stageloader. The result was an average 7 dBA reduction when the active noise control was applied. These results suggest the possibility that active noise reduction can be a useful means to reduce stageloader noise if the control system can be made sufficiently rugged. The study …

Satisficing Negotiations, Wynn C. Stirling, James K. Archibald, Jared C. Hill, F. Ryan Johnson Jan 2006

Satisficing Negotiations, Wynn C. Stirling, James K. Archibald, Jared C. Hill, F. Ryan Johnson

Faculty Publications

Negotiation procedures that are founded on the doctrine of individual rationality, where each participant is committed to maximizing its own satisfaction, are limited in their ability to accommodate the interests of others, and therefore, may unnecessarily constrain the negotiability of a decision maker, particularly in cooperative environments. Satisficing game theory provides a distinct alternative to the hyperrationality of conventional rational choice by waiving reliance on the individual rationality premise and offering an approach to negotiatory decision making that is based on a well-defined mathematical notion of satisficing, or being good enough, that permits the modeling of complex interrelationships between agents. …

Reducing Energy In Fpga Multipliers Through Glitch Reduction - Clock Power And Digit-Serial Addendum, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin Jan 2006

Reducing Energy In Fpga Multipliers Through Glitch Reduction - Clock Power And Digit-Serial Addendum, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: NASA. In a previous paper it was shown that reducing the amount of glitches in digital designs can significantly reduce the amount of dynamic power consumption. Pipelined multipliers and a bit-serial multiplier design were used to show this. The paper failed to mention how much of the dynamic power consumption was due to the clock distribution. Also the only digit- serial multiplier digit size investigated was a digit size of 1. This paper addresses the issue of dynamic clocking power and includes results of digit-serial multipliers with larger digit sizes.

Techniques In The Design Of Thermomechanical Microactuators, Larry L. Howell, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael S. Baker, Christian D. Lott Jan 2006

Techniques In The Design Of Thermomechanical Microactuators, Larry L. Howell, Timothy W. Mclain, Michael S. Baker, Christian D. Lott

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this chapter is to provide fundamental background for the design of thermomechanical microactuators. Actuation has been a particularly challenging aspect of microsystem development. Many actuation approaches used at the macro level, such as hydraulics, pneumatics, electric motors, internal combustion engines and turbines, are either too difficult to fabricate at the micro level or do not work well at that scale. Electrostatic attraction is one approach that has been widely used for actuation of microsystems; however, electrostatic actuators tend to have high voltage requirements and low output force capabilities. While electrostatic actuation is suitable for many applications, some …
