Continuing Evolution Of Aerodynamic Concept Development Using Collaborative Numerical And Experimental Evaluations, Russell M. Cummings, Scott A. Morton Jan 2006

Continuing Evolution Of Aerodynamic Concept Development Using Collaborative Numerical And Experimental Evaluations, Russell M. Cummings, Scott A. Morton

Aerospace Engineering

Traditionally, computational predictions and experimental evaluations of aerodynamic concepts have been conducted separately, with little collaboration other than post priori comparisons of results. This has led to distrust and even antagonism between the computational and the experimental communities. These difficulties probably began when early computational fluid dynamic practitioners boasted that wind tunnels would become secondary in aerodynamic concept development within a few short years, a prediction that has not come true. On the contrary, it is believed that a great deal of synergy can be cultivated when computational and experimental evaluations are conducted in an integrative fashion. A variety of …

Critical Hypersonic Aerothermodynamic Phenomena, John J. Bertin, Russell M. Cummings Jan 2006

Critical Hypersonic Aerothermodynamic Phenomena, John J. Bertin, Russell M. Cummings

Aerospace Engineering

The challenges in understanding hypersonic flight are discussed and critical hypersonic aerothermodynamics issues are reviewed. The ability of current analytical methods, numerical methods, ground testing capabilities, and flight testing approaches to predict hypersonic flow are evaluated. The areas where aerothermodynamic shortcomings restrict our ability to design and analyze hypersonic vehicles are discussed, and prospects for future capabilities are reviewed. Considerable work still needs to be done before our understanding of hypersonic flow will allow for the accurate prediction of vehicle flight characteristics throughout the flight envelope from launch to orbital insertion.

Comprehensive Analysis Of The Relationship Between Real-Time Traffic Surveillance Data And Rear-End Crashes On Freeways, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty Jan 2006

Comprehensive Analysis Of The Relationship Between Real-Time Traffic Surveillance Data And Rear-End Crashes On Freeways, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Rear-end collisions are the single most frequent type of crash on freeways. Their impact on freeway operation is also most noticeable because almost all of them occur during periods of medium to heavy demand. Preliminary explorations of average traffic speeds before a crash measured at loop detector stations surrounding the crash location showed that rear-end crashes can be placed into two mutually exclusive groups: first, those that occur under extended congestion and, second, those that occur with relatively free-flow conditions prevailing 5 to 10 min before the crash. With loop detector data preceding these two groups of rear-end crashes contrasted …

Design Of A Low-Cost Acoustic Modem For Moored Oceanographic Applications, Bridget Benson, Grace Chang, Derek Manov, Brian Graham, Ryan Kastner

Electrical Engineering

This paper discusses the current state of the art systems of real time telemetry on oceanographic moorings and describes the design requirements for making acoustic modem data telemetry a more widely used form of data telemetry for moored oceanographic applications. We present the design of a low cost ‘mooring modem’ and the results of an initial pool test for its prototype. Based on these results, we describe how the mooring modem meets the design requirements for moored oceanographic applications by looking at how it meets the requirements for a specific mooring example – the SB CHARM. We conclude by presenting …

Kinetic Characterization For Pretreatment Of Timber Varieties And Switchgrass Using Diluted Acid Hydrolysis, Shu Chiang Yat

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In recent years, growing attention has been devoted to the use of lignocellulosic biomass as a feedstock to produce renewable carbohydrates as a source of energy products, including liquid alternatives to fossil fuels. The benefits of developing woody biomass to ethanol technology are to increase the long-term national energy security, reduce fossil energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, use renewable rather than depletable resources, and create local jobs. Currently, research is driven by the need to reduce the cost of biomass-ethanol production. One of the preferred methods is to thermochemically pretreat the biomass material and subsequently, enzymatically hydrolyze the pretreated …

Optimal Beam Forming For Laser Beam Propagation Through Random Media, Baoyong Liu Jan 2006

Optimal Beam Forming For Laser Beam Propagation Through Random Media, Baoyong Liu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Focusing optical beams on a target through random propagation media is very important in many applications such as free space optical communica- tions and laser weapons. Random media effects such as beam spread and scintillation can degrade the optical system's performance severely. Compensation schemes are needed in these applications to overcome these random media effcts. In this research, we investigated the optimal beams for two different optimization criteria: one is to maximize the concentrated received intensity and the other is to minimize the scintillation index at the target plane. In the study of the optimal beam to maximize the weighted …

Experimental And Modeling Study Of The Filtration And Oxidation Characteristics Of A Diesel Oxidation Catalyst And A Catalyzed Particulate Filter, Kiran C. Premchand Jan 2006

Experimental And Modeling Study Of The Filtration And Oxidation Characteristics Of A Diesel Oxidation Catalyst And A Catalyzed Particulate Filter, Kiran C. Premchand

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with a catalyzed diesel particulate filter (CPF) is an effective exhaust aftertreatment device that reduces particulate emissions from diesel engines, and properly designed DOC-CPF systems provide passive regeneration of the filter by the oxidation of PM via thermal and NO2/temperature-assisted means under various vehicle duty cycles. However, controlling the backpressure on engines caused by the addition of the CPF to the exhaust system requires a good understanding of the filtration and oxidation processes taking place inside the filter as the deposition and oxidation of solid particulate matter (PM) change as functions of loading …

Time-Domain Models For Power System Stability And Unbalance, Ramanathan Arunachalam Jan 2006

Time-Domain Models For Power System Stability And Unbalance, Ramanathan Arunachalam

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

It is an important and difficult challenge to protect modern interconnected power system from blackouts. Applying advanced power system protection techniques and increasing power system stability are ways to improve the reliability and security of power systems. Phasor-domain software packages such as Power System Simulator for Engineers (PSS/E) can be used to study large power systems but cannot be used for transient analysis. In order to observe both power system stability and transient behavior of the system during disturbances, modeling has to be done in the time-domain. This work focuses on modeling of power systems and various control systems in …

Controlling Performance Of Crumb Rubber-Modified Binders Through Addition Of Polymer Modifiers, Magdy Abdelrahman Jan 2006

Controlling Performance Of Crumb Rubber-Modified Binders Through Addition Of Polymer Modifiers, Magdy Abdelrahman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of tire rubber as a modifier to enhance the properties of asphalt mixes through the wet process has proved to be a successful procedure, but full control of the properties of crumb rubber-modified binders has been a challenge. The literature indicates a wide variation on adding rubber to asphalt and that the degree of success of rubber modification in AC mixes depends on several factors, the majority of which relate to the method of mixing, storing, and transporting and to construction technologies. Understanding the nature of the interaction process between asphalt cement and crumb rubber-modifier (CRM) helps explain …

The objectives of this study were to provide data that can be used to predict exposure-based effects of RDX in aged soil on multiple endpoint organisms representing two trophic levels. These data can be used for defining criteria or reference values for environmental management and conducting specific risk assessment. Dose–response experiments formed the basis for the evaluation of toxic effects and transfer of contaminants from soil into two trophic levels. Long-term exposure tests were conducted to evaluate chronic, sublethal, toxicity and transfer of aged soil-based explosives, with RDX as main contaminant. In these tests, plants were exposed for 55 days …

Earthquake Hazard Input For Loss Estimation Study: St. Louis Highway System, Ronaldo Luna, David J. Hoffman, William T. Lawrence

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The long recurrence period and high consequence earthquakes events in the New Madrid Seismic Zone have caused some federal agencies (e.g., NEHRP, FHWA) to look at the more densely populated areas where higher seismic risk is present. This paper presents the data collection, interpretation, and analysis of the geotechnical information required for an earthquake loss estimation study in St. Louis metro area. The loss estimation study was limited to the highway transportation system, where only the major highways were considered. The project information was processed using a GIS, and the subsequent loss analysis was executed using the HAZUS-MH program.

Sound Source Separation Using Shifted Non-Negative Tensor Factorisation, Eugene Coyle, Derry Fitzgerald, Matt Cranitch Jan 2006

Sound Source Separation Using Shifted Non-Negative Tensor Factorisation, Eugene Coyle, Derry Fitzgerald, Matt Cranitch

Conference papers

Recently, shifted non-negative Matrix Factorisation was developed as a means of separating harmonic instruments from single channel mixtures. However, in many cases two or more channels are available, in which case it would be advantageous to have a multichannel version of the algorithm. To this end, a shifted Non-negative Tensor Factorisation algorithm is derived, which extends shifted Non-negative Matrix Factoristiaon to the multi channel case. The use of this algorithm for multi-channel sound source separation of harmonic instruments is demonstrated. Further, it is shown that the algorithm can be used to perform Non-negative Tensor Deconvolution, to separate sound sources which …

High Performance Circularly Polarized Antenna Based On Fractal Ebg Structure, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann, Giuseppe Ruvio, Matthias John

Conference papers

Circularly polarized patch antennas have been widely applied in wireless communication system, global positioning system, etc., because of their low-profile, lightweight, ease of fabrication and low lost [1,2]. To achieve high performance for circularly polarized patch antennas, some new structures were reported in the literature, such as antennas array, stack layer antennas, using periodic structures [3-7], etc. In this paper, a high performance circularly polarized low frequency patch antenna based on the compact fractal high-impedance surface EBG structure has been fabricated and experimented. The measured results show that the proposed circularly polarized patch antenna has good performance in impedance bandwidth, …

Study Of The Behaviour Of Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11b Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis Jan 2006

Study Of The Behaviour Of Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11b Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis

Conference papers

The performance of video streaming over WLAN networks is not only influenced by the state of the network but also by the encoding configuration parameters of the video stream, such as the video content being streamed, how the vide is encoded and how it is transmitted. In this paper, we analyse the unique delay characteristic of video streaming applications in a WLAN environment. We show that the “burstiness” of video is due to the frame-based nature of encoded video. We show how each video frame is transmitted as a burst of packets that is queued at the Access Point causing …

Bridge Dynamics And Loading, Colin C. Caprani, Eugene O'Brien, Arturo Gonzalez, Yingyan Li, Paraic Rattigan, Niall Harris Jan 2006

Bridge Dynamics And Loading, Colin C. Caprani, Eugene O'Brien, Arturo Gonzalez, Yingyan Li, Paraic Rattigan, Niall Harris

Conference papers

Recent UCD research on dynamic bridge-truck interaction and bridge traffic loading in general is reported. The accuracy of bridge traffic load assessment has been significantly improved by identifying the differences in the sources of traffic loading on short- to medium-span bridges and treating them separately. It is shown that results can be significantly improved by treating 1-,2-,3- and 4-truck loading events separately. Gaps between trucks are also identified as a critical issue that strongly influences the frequency of key3-and 4-truck events. Trends in the dynamics of traffic loading are identified using simple force models on simply supported beams. It is …

Estimating Risk Of Failure Of Engineering Structures Using Predictive Likelihood, Colin C. Caprani, A. Bordallo-Ruiz, E. J. O'Brien Jan 2006

Estimating Risk Of Failure Of Engineering Structures Using Predictive Likelihood, Colin C. Caprani, A. Bordallo-Ruiz, E. J. O'Brien

Conference papers

It has been common engineering practice to define characteristic values for loading and capacity of structures in order to assess the structural capacity of existing structures. This approach, yet practical and intuitive, lead to the comparison of deterministic values (characteristic values) that had to represent all the variability of the problem and is considered to be conservative, as usually loading is overestimated and capacity underestimated, yielding to calculations with high safety margins for the extreme events. Probabilistics methods have tried to overcom e this limitation by computing the overall probability of failure (Pf) for the lifetime of the structure, taking …

Determination Of Characteristic Bridge Daf Using Dynamic Finite Element Analysis Of Critical Static Loading Scenarios, Colin C. Caprani, Paraic Rattigan, Arturo Gonzalez, E. J. O'Brien Jan 2006

Determination Of Characteristic Bridge Daf Using Dynamic Finite Element Analysis Of Critical Static Loading Scenarios, Colin C. Caprani, Paraic Rattigan, Arturo Gonzalez, E. J. O'Brien

Conference papers

The development of accurate codes for the design of bridges and the evaluation of existing structures requires adequate assessment of site-specific heavy traffic loading and also the dynamic interaction that may occur as this traffic traverses the structure. Shortcomings in current design codes occur due to the relatively independent manner in which critical static loading values and the corresponding allowance for dynamic amplification factor (DAF) are obtained. It is important that an approach is adopted that allows for the reduced probability of both high static loading and high dynamic amplification occurring simultaneously. Consideration of only relevant critical loading events will …

Osteon Interfacial Strength And Histomorphometry Of Equine Cortical Bone, Robert F. Bigley, Lanny V. Griffin, Lisa Christensen, Ryan Vandenbosch

Biomedical Engineering

The interfacial strength of secondary osteons from the diaphysis of the Thoroughbred equine third metacarpal was evaluated using the fiber pushout test. The pushout was performed on 300–500 mm sections of 4x4x15mm bone blocks machined from four anatomic regions of the cortex. Pushout strength was evaluated from proximal to distal location within the diaphysis on four osteon types classified under polarized light on adjacent histologic sections from each block. The shear strength of the interfaces were estimated from shear lag theory. Differences were found in the interfacial strength of osteons based on appearance under polarized light with bright field having …

A Simplified Model For Ploughing Forces In Turning, Daniel Waldorf

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

This paper aims to provide experimental data in support of a modified theoretical model for quantifying the effect of cutting tool edge geometry on machining forces. A previously published slip-line model is simplified and extended to the case of turning. Several sets of machining experiments were run with custom-fabricated cutting inserts of varying edge hone radius and chamfer geometry. Cutting forces were measured using a dynamometer during cutting. Results show that varying edge geometry can have a major effect on cutting forces. The developed model effectively captures the edge phenomenon and its effect on cutting forces and also offers a …
