Effects Of Sulfide Ions On The Inhibiting Efficiency Of Eda As A Copper Corrosion Inhibitor In Dilute Hcl Solution, Wen-Juan Qu, Rong-Gui Du, Chang-Jian Lin Feb 2006

Effects Of Sulfide Ions On The Inhibiting Efficiency Of Eda As A Copper Corrosion Inhibitor In Dilute Hcl Solution, Wen-Juan Qu, Rong-Gui Du, Chang-Jian Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

The anticorrosion action of EDA on copper in dilute HCl solution and the effect of sulfide ions on the inhibiting efficiency were studied by the Tafel plot method. The corrosion potential of Cu shifted to more positive value and the corrosion current density decreased after the addition of Na2S to the solution. The results indicated that sulphide ions could increase the inhibiting efficiency of EDA because of the synergistic inhibition effect between EDA and Na2S,resulting from the adsorption of HS- on the surface of Cu,facilitated the adsorption of EDA to form a highly protective adsorbed layer which …

The Complex Of Pasp And Tungstate As Inhibitors Of Cupronickel B10′S Corrosion In 3% Nacl Solution, Qun-Jie Xu, Guo-Ding Zhou, Hui-Feng Wang, Wen-Bin Cai Feb 2006

The Complex Of Pasp And Tungstate As Inhibitors Of Cupronickel B10′S Corrosion In 3% Nacl Solution, Qun-Jie Xu, Guo-Ding Zhou, Hui-Feng Wang, Wen-Bin Cai

Journal of Electrochemistry

AC impedance and polarization curve measurements were conducted to study the effects of environ-ment-friendly inhibitors PASP,Na2WO4 and their complexes on the corrosion of cupronickel B10 in 3%NaCl solution. The results indicate that PASP or Na2WO4 alone does inhibit the corrosion of B10,and most effectiveconcentrations are 40 mg/L and 60 mg/L for PASP and Na2WO4,respectively.With the total concentration of 40mg/L for the complex inhibitors, the optimum complex ratio of PASP to Na2WO4 was 3:1.The complex of such a combination showed a significantly synergetic inhibition effect on the corrosion of B10.

The Effect Of Solution Concentration On Properties Of Ru-Ti-Ir Oxide Anode Coatings, Ke Wang, Yan Han, Jun-Tao Wang, Xiao-Ling Zhang, Yu-Pu Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The anode coatings of Ru-Ti-Ir oxide with various solution concentrations were prepared by thermal decomposition. The scanning electron microscope(SEM),energy dispersive X-ray detector(EDX),X-ray diffraction(XRD),accelerated life, polarization curve, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance.spectroscopy(EIS)tests were carried out.The results showed that there was an obvious effect of solution concentrations on the morphology of the coatings, but little effect on polarization of chlorine evolution.Voltammetric charges and double layer capacitances of anode coatings had a tendency to fall down firstly then increase afterwards as the solution concentration increased.

Oxygen Enrichment Effect Of Ceo2 To The Cathode Performance Of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell, Xiang-Li Hou, Hong-Feng Xu, Jian-Hua Dong, Xin Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

CeO2 was added to Pt/C catalyst in the cathode of PEMFC by both sol and impregnation methods. The samples were evaluated by TEM,cyclic voltammogram techniques and proton exchange membrane fuel cell performance test. The addition of CeO2 obviously improved the performance of PEMFC and represented a notable function of oxygen enrichment in the cathode side. But with the addition of CeO2,part of the catalyst surface was covered and led to the performance drop of the PEMFC.The best content of CeO2 is 1% when it is added by impregnation method and 3% when it is added by sol method.

The Effective Magnetoelectroelastic Moduli Of Matrix-Based Multiferroic Composites, Shashidhar Srinivas, Jiangyu Li, Y.C. Zhou, A.K. Soh

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we develop a mean field Mori-Tanaka model [T. Mori and K. Tanaka, Acta. Metall. 21, 571 (1973)] to calculate the effective magnetoelectroelastic moduli of matrix-based multiferroic composites, emphasizing the effects of shape and orientation distribution of second phase particles that have not been investigated before. Through a systematic study, it is observed that laminated composites are optimal for magnetoelectric coefficient a11, while fibrous composites are optimal for a33. In addition, these coupling coefficients are maximum when the second phase particles are aligned. It is also postulated that the large discrepancy between theoretical predictions …

Sustainable Mining: Trends And Opportunities, James L. Hendrix Feb 2006

Sustainable Mining: Trends And Opportunities, James L. Hendrix

Papers in Sustainable Mining

Sustainable development integrates economic, environmental and social considerations in order to improve the lives of the current generation and ensure that future generations will have adequate resources and opportunities. Sustainable mining is not a new approach or concept in resource consumption. It is a holistic approach for dealing with a complex, interlinked set of factors that determine the net societal worth of a project. A holistic approach to phosphate beneficiation gives us opportunities for the improvement of economic results through reactant and waste minimization. It also gives direction for continued research thrusts to solve the problems associated with the clay …

Variation Analysis Of Involute Spline Tooth Contact, Brian J. De Caires Feb 2006

Variation Analysis Of Involute Spline Tooth Contact, Brian J. De Caires

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to provide an in-depth understanding of tooth engagement in splined couplings based on variations in clearances between mating teeth. It is standard practice to assume that 25-50% of the total spline teeth in a coupling are engaged due to variations from manufacture. Based on the assumed number of teeth engaged, the load capability of a splined coupling is determined. However, due to the variations in tooth geometry from manufacuture, the number of teeth actually engaged is dependent on the applied load and the tooth errors. The variations result in sequential tooth engagement with increasing …

A Gradient-Based Optimum Block Adaptation Ica Technique For Interference Suppression In Highly Dynamic Communication Channels, Wasfy B. Mikhael, Tianyu Yang Feb 2006

A Gradient-Based Optimum Block Adaptation Ica Technique For Interference Suppression In Highly Dynamic Communication Channels, Wasfy B. Mikhael, Tianyu Yang

Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Daytona Beach

The fast fixed-point independent component analysis (ICA) algorithm has been widely used in various applications because of its fast convergence and superior performance. However, in a highly dynamic environment, real-time adaptation is necessary to track the variations of the mixing matrix. In this scenario, the gradient-based online learning algorithm performs better, but its convergence is slow, and depends on a proper choice of convergence factor. This paper develops a gradient-based optimum block adaptive ICA algorithm (OBA/ICA) that combines the advantages of the two algorithms. Simulation results for telecommunication applications indicate that the resulting performance is superior under time-varying conditions, which …

A Plastic-Based Thick-Film Li-Ion Microbattery For Autonomous Microsensors, Qian Lin Feb 2006

A Plastic-Based Thick-Film Li-Ion Microbattery For Autonomous Microsensors, Qian Lin

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the development of a high-power, plastic-based, thick-film lithium-ion microbattery for use in a hybrid micropower system for autonomous microsensors. A composite porous electrode structure and a liquid state electrolyte were implemented in the microbatteries to achieve the high power capability and energy density. The use of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was found to significantly reduce the measured resistance of the cathodes that use LiAl0.14Mn1.86O4 as active materials, increase active material accessibility, and improve the cycling and power performance without the need of compression. Optimized uncompressed macro cathodes were capable of delivering power densities greater than 50 mW/cm2, …

Potential Of Energy Efficiency And Renewable Energy Savings To Impact Florida's Projected Energy Use In 2014, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip W. Fairey

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Florida's 2004 electrical energy use was 233 billion kilowatt-hours. Over half (51%) of this energy use went to residential building energy. The state's current 10-year predictions for electrical energy use in 2014 show a requirement for approximately 308 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, an increase of approximately 75 billion kilowatt-hours. This study presents an example of how Florida can radically alter its 2014 energy use projection by aggressively pursuing residential building energy efficiency improvements and aggressively increasing its use of proven renewable energy resources.

Stormwater Irrigation Volume Ii: Cyanobacteria Counts With Toxin Concentrations In Stormwater Ponds And After Biofiltration To Reduce Health Risks (2006), Martin Wanielista

BMP Trains Research and Publications

Algal blooms are a common occurrence in water bodies of all shapes and sizes in the State of Florida as well as all other locations around the world. Cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, have proven to be of special concern due to proliferation and potential to produce toxins that are harmful to humans, livestock and wildlife. Casual observations of lakes and stormwater ponds in Florida will confirm algal conditions in many. The health risks and the potential for exposure to harmful and possibly fatal toxins associated with these algal blooms are becoming more evident as more nutrients are discharged to our …

Stormwater Irrigation Volume I: Evapotranspiration And Nitrate Reduction After Biofiltration To Reduce Health Risks, Martin Wanielista, Ewoud Hulstein Feb 2006

Stormwater Irrigation Volume I: Evapotranspiration And Nitrate Reduction After Biofiltration To Reduce Health Risks, Martin Wanielista, Ewoud Hulstein

BMP Trains Research and Publications

Irrigation of detained stormwater is an option available for volume and pollution control. Volume control is accomplished when detained waters normally discharged from a detention facility are used instead for irrigation. However, a health risk may result if the nitrate in the irrigation water is not attenuated in the plant and soil matrix. The nitrate level in stormwater ponds is generally much less that the health risk specified as 10 mg/L in Drinking water standards. Nevertheless, the fate of nitrate in the soil plant matrix has not been documented. In addition, there are other potential problems associated with not maintaining …

Statistical Correlation Of Gain And Buildup Time In Apds And Its Effects On Receiver Performance, Peng Sun, Majeed M. Hayat, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich Feb 2006

Statistical Correlation Of Gain And Buildup Time In Apds And Its Effects On Receiver Performance, Peng Sun, Majeed M. Hayat, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper reports a novel recurrence theory that enables us to calculate the exact joint probability density function (pdf) of the random gain and the random avalanche buildup time in avalanche photodiodes (APDs) including the effect of dead space. Such calculations reveal a strong statistical correlation between the gain and the buildup time for all widths of the multiplication region. To facilitate the calculation of the photocurrent statistics in the presence of this correlation, the impulse-response function of the APD is approximately modeled by a function of time whose prespecified shape is appropriately parameterized by two random variables: the gain …

The Comet Assay To Determine The Mode Of Cell Death For The Ultrasonic Delivery Of Doxorubicin To Human Leukemia (Hl-60 Cells) From Pluronic P105 Micelles, Ghaleb A. Husseini, Kim L. O'Neill, William G. Pitt Feb 2006

Pitt

Faculty Publications

This notes examines the mode of cell death of HL-60 cells exposed to 70 kHz and 1.3 W/cm2 in the presence of 1% Pluronic P105 and 1.67 μg/ml doxorubicin (Dox). The cells were ultrasonicated for 30, 60 and 120 minutes. They were then lysed, electrophorised, stained using propidium iodide, and their DNA profile captured using a fluorescent microscope. The gradual DNA damage observed and the comet tails captured after 1 and 2 hours of insonation suggest that the mode of cell killing is apoptosis.

A Novel Fast Inter-Prediction Mode Decision For H.264/Avc, Yi Guo, Houqiang Li, Shibao Pei, Chang Wen Chen

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Video coding in wireless environment requires lower computational complexity and lower energy consumption than that used in storage oriented or network oriented application. Although H.264/AVC standard provides considerable higher compression efficiency as compared to the previous standards, its complexity is significantly increased at the same time. In a H.264/AVC encoder, the most time-consuming components are variable block sizes motion estimation and mode decision using rate-distortion optimization (RDO). In this paper, we propose a novel fast inter-prediction mode decision by exploiting high correlation between rate-distortion costs (RD cost) of macroblocks in the current inter frame and their co-located macroblocks in the …

Adaptive Evolution Of Chloroplast Genome Structure Inferred Using A Parametric Bootstrap Approach, Liying Cui, Jim Leebens-Mack, Li-San Wang, Jijun Tang, Linda Rymarquis, David B. Stern, Claude W. Depamphilis

Faculty Publications

Background
Genome rearrangements influence gene order and configuration of gene clusters in all genomes. Most land plant chloroplast DNAs (cpDNAs) share a highly conserved gene content and with notable exceptions, a largely co-linear gene order. Conserved gene orders may reflect a slow intrinsic rate of neutral chromosomal rearrangements, or selective constraint. It is unknown to what extent observed changes in gene order are random or adaptive. We investigate the influence of natural selection on gene order in association with increased rate of chromosomal rearrangement. We use a novel parametric bootstrap approach to test if directional selection is responsible for the …

Wagging The Contact Line: Transverse And Longitudinal Waves, S. Saritha, Partho Neogi Feb 2006

Wagging The Contact Line: Transverse And Longitudinal Waves, S. Saritha, Partho Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Kinetics of wetting has been explored where the contact line not only sees a steady spreading but also has longitudinal or transverse oscillations imposed on it. The latter case is realized when spreading takes place over a rough surface. The effects of the imposed motion are small, which seem to be due to low spreading rates and small dynamic contact angles used in this study. However, a singularity is seen in viscous dissipation during the movement on the model rough surface, which is interpreted here as an instability that is similar to Haines' jumps and stick-slip phenomena, with possible entrainment …

Characterization Of Metal And Metal Alloy Films As Contact Materials In Mems Switches, Hyukjae Lee, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Shankar Mall, Kevin D. Leedy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This study presents a basic step toward the selection methodology of electric contact materials for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) metal contact switches. This involves the interrelationship between two important parameters, resistivity and hardness, since they provide the guidelines and assessment of contact resistance, wear, deformation and adhesion characteristics of MEMS switches. For this purpose, thin film alloys of three noble metals, platinum (Pt), rhodium (Rh) and ruthenium (Ru) with gold (Au), were investigated. The interrelationship between resistivity and hardness was established for three levels of alloying of these metals with gold. Thin films of gold (Au), platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Rh) and …

Self-Consistent Local Gw Method: Application To 3D And 4D Metals, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov, N.E. Zein Feb 2006

Self-Consistent Local Gw Method: Application To 3D And 4D Metals, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov, N.E. Zein

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The spectral densities for 3d and 4d transition metals are calculated using the simplified version of the self-consistent GW method employing the local (one-site) approximation and the self-consistent quasiparticle basis set. The results are compared with those given by the traditional local density approximation (LDA) and also with experimental x-ray photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra. While no systematic improvements over LDA are observed, this fully self-consistent many-body technique generates quite reasonable results and can serve as a practical prototype for further development of the many-body electronic structure theory.
