A Formal Specification In Jml Of The Java Security Package, Poonam Agarwal, Carlos E. Rubio-Medrano, Yoonsik Cheon, Patricia J. Teller Apr 2006

A Formal Specification In Jml Of The Java Security Package, Poonam Agarwal, Carlos E. Rubio-Medrano, Yoonsik Cheon, Patricia J. Teller

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The Java security package allows a programmer to add security features to Java applications. Although the package provides a complex application programming interface (API), its informal description, e.g., Javadoc comments, is often ambiguous or imprecise. Nonetheless, the security of an application can be compromised if the package is used without a concrete understanding of the precise behavior of the API classes and interfaces, which can be attained via formal specification. In this paper, we present our experiences in formally specifying the Java security package in JML, a formal behavior interface specification language for Java. We illustrate portions of our JML …

Fast Computation Of Centroids For Constant-Width Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets, Jerry M. Mendel, Hongwei Wu, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang Apr 2006

Fast Computation Of Centroids For Constant-Width Interval-Valued Fuzzy Sets, Jerry M. Mendel, Hongwei Wu, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Interval-valued fuzzy sets provide a more adequate description of uncertainty than traditional fuzzy sets; it is therefore important to use interval-valued fuzzy sets in applications. One of the main applications of fuzzy sets is fuzzy control, and one of the most computationally intensive part of fuzzy control is defuzzification. Since a transition to interval-valued fuzzy sets usually increases the amount of computations, it is vitally important to design faster algorithms for the corresponding defuzzification. In this paper, we provide such an algorithm for a practically important case of constant-width interval-valued fuzzy sets

Topaz: A Firefox Protocol Extension For Gridftp Based On Data Flow Diagrams, Richard Zamudio, Daniel Catarino, Michela Taufer, Brent Stearn, Karan Bhatia

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

As grid infrastructures mature, an increasing challenge is to provide end-user scientists with intuitive interfaces to computational services, data management capabilities, and visualization tools. The current approach used in a number of cyber-infrastructure projects is to leverage the capabilities of the Mozilla framework to provide rich end-user tools that seamlessly integrate with remote resources such as web/grid services and data repositories.

In this paper we apply rigorous software engineering tools, Data Flow Diagrams or DFDs, to guide the design, implementation, and performance analysis of Topaz, a GridFTP protocol extension to the Firefox browser. GridFTP servers, similar to FTP servers used …

The Effect Of Gender Schematicity On The Assessment Of Male And Female Pilots’ Competence Given Identical Scenarios, Jan D. Laplante Apr 2006

The Effect Of Gender Schematicity On The Assessment Of Male And Female Pilots’ Competence Given Identical Scenarios, Jan D. Laplante

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Gender has been identified as one of the top three categories, along with race, and age that are subject to stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination (Fiske, 1998). With the emergence of women in stereotypical male domains, gender research has never been more important. The aviation community is a prime example of one such domain.

This study examined the presence of an existing perception that male pilots are more competent then female pilots. It suggested that there does not appear to be evidence that would explain why there should be a difference in this perception of competence. It also discussed social theories …

Viscoplastic Finite-Element Simulation To Predict The Solder Joint Fatigue Life Of Different Flash Memory Die Stacking Architectures, Yong Je Lee

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis focuses on the viscoplastic finite-element simulation to predict the solder joint fatigue life of different die stacking architectures for flash memory products. Four different stacked package architectures were evaluated as follows: pyramid, rotated, and spacer stacking, while interconnection (solder joint) was held constant. Number of dies for all four stacking configurations were varied from three, five and seven. To keep the package height constant, the die and die attach thickness were varied and the resulting effects on the stresses were investigated. A quarter and half symmetry model of stacked flash package are generated using ANSYS APDL script. The …

Identification Of Pavement Distress In Kentucky, Tim C. Scully Jr., R. Clark Graves, David L. Allen Apr 2006

Identification Of Pavement Distress In Kentucky, Tim C. Scully Jr., R. Clark Graves, David L. Allen

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In Kentucky, the roads are comprised primarily of two types of pavement. The first being Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) a rigid pavement, and the other is Asphaltic Concrete (AC), a flexible pavement. There is a noticeable difference in their appearance, ride, cost and performance. Since Kentucky utilizes both pavements, as many states do, it is necessary to have a system in place to consistently identify pavement distress and categorize their overall performance.

Dynamics Of Nonlinear Diffusion Processes, Dustin A. Sipka Apr 2006

Dynamics Of Nonlinear Diffusion Processes, Dustin A. Sipka

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze nonlinear diffusion processes. In particular, some of the results arrived at by Newman and Sagan in their 1981 paper "Galactic Civilizations: Population Dynamics and Interstellar Diffusion," will be reproduced by different means. First, a thorough analysis of the linear diffusion equation will be performed in order to test a numerical algorithm that can solve the nonlinear diffusion equation and look at the processes of interest with sufficient accuracy. Once the algorithm is tested and shows good resolution it is used to solve the nonlinear equation. The post processing is then done to …

Parallel Interference Cancellation Multiuser Detectors For Ds-Cdma Communication Systems, Feng Liu Apr 2006

Parallel Interference Cancellation Multiuser Detectors For Ds-Cdma Communication Systems, Feng Liu

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A non-linear sub-optimal multiuser detector in the form of parallel interference cancellation (PIC) has been studied. The main objective of this thesis is to develop an analytical model for PIC performance analysis and propose new near-optimum approach. Since the exact performance analysis of PIC is difficult to derive due to its nonlinear decision function, previous work tends to adopt computer simulation method or evaluate through Gaussian approximation (GA) method. For PIC detector, the GA method may not apply since there may exist a dominate interference signal. In addition, the central limit theorem is not applicable to model the residual MAI …

Multi-Area Unit Commitment And Economic Dispatch With Market Operation Components, Chitra Yingvivatanapong

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Unit commitment and economic dispatch, when combined together, is a useful tool to find the most economical generation schedule with which demand and spinning reserve requirement are supplied and all generating unit constraints, such as unit ramp rates, unit minimum and maximum generation capabilities, and unit minimum up-time and down-time, are satisfied over a time horizon. For systems consisting of multiple areas, area import/export capabilities and tie line capacity constraints also need to be taken into account. Enhanced Lagrangian relaxation, unit decommitment and lambda-iteration methods are applied in this dissertation to determine the optimal unit commitment and economic dispatch schedule …

Reliable In-Plane Velocity Measurements With Magnetic Resonance Velocity Imaging, Haosen Zhang, Sandra S. Halliburton, Andan K. Venkatachari, Randolph M. Setser, Richard D. White, George P. Chatzimavroudis

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a well-known diagnostic imaging modality. In addition to its high-quality imaging capabilities, hydrogen-based MR can also provide non-invasively the velocity of water-based fluids in all three spatial directions (through-plane and in-plane) in an image. Many previous studies showed that MR velocity imaging can accurately measure the through-plane velocity. The aim of this study was to evaluate how reliable are the in-plane velocity measurements in an image. The axial velocity of water in horizontal tubes (inner diameter: 14.7–26.2 mm) was measured with segmented (fast) and non-segmented (slow) k-space MR velocity …

A Comparison Of Data Assimilation Methods Using A Planetary Geostrophic Model, Edward D. Zaron Apr 2006

A Comparison Of Data Assimilation Methods Using A Planetary Geostrophic Model, Edward D. Zaron

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Assimilating hydrographic observations into a planetary geostrophic model is posed as a problem in control theory. The cost functional is the sum of weighted model and data residuals. Model errors are assumed to be spatially correlated, and hydrographic station data are assimilated directly. Searches in state space and data space, for minimizing the cost functional, are compared to a direct matrix inversion algorithm in the data space. State-space methods seek the minimizer of the cost functional by performing a preconditioned search in an N-dimensional space of state or control variables, where N is approximately 650 000 in the present calculations. …

Extraction Of Dispersive Material Parameters Using Vector Network Analyzers And Genetic Algorithms, Jianmin Zhang, Marina Koledintseva, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak, Konstantin Rozanov, Giulio Antonini, Antonio Orlandi Apr 2006

Extraction Of Dispersive Material Parameters Using Vector Network Analyzers And Genetic Algorithms, Jianmin Zhang, Marina Koledintseva, David Pommerenke, James L. Drewniak, Konstantin Rozanov, Giulio Antonini, Antonio Orlandi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel method to extract dispersive properties for dielectrics over a wide frequency range is proposed. This method is based on measuring scattering parameters for planar transmission lines and applying genetic algorithms. The scattering parameters are converted into ABCD matrix parameters. The complex propagation constant of the TEM wave inside the line is obtained from A-parameters of the ABCD matrix. For planar transmission lines, analytical or empirical formulas for dielectric loss, conductor loss, anaphase constant are known. The genetic algorithm is then used to extract the Debye parameters for the dielectric substrates. FDTD modeling is used to verify the dispersive parameter …

Optimisation Of The Composition Of An Acrylic Bone Cement: Application To Relative Amounts Of The Initiator And The Activator/Co-Initiator In Surgical Simplex®P, S. Madigan, M. R. Towler, G. Lewis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In cemented arthroplasties, the two-part self-curing acrylic bone cement is currently the only material used for anchoring the total joint replacement to the contiguous bone. In virtually all commercially available formulations of this cement, the agents used for the initiation and activation/co-initiation of the radical polymerisation reaction are benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and N, N dimethyl-paratoluidine (DMPT), respectively. There are no reports in the open literature on the rationale for the amounts of these and other constituents in the formulations of the cement. Given the concerns that have been raised in the literature regarding the effect of residual DMPT on the …

Automated Oxidase-Coupled Amperometric Microsensor With Integrated Electrochemical Actuation System For Continuous Sensing Of Saccharoids, Yadunandana Yellambalase, Jongwon Park, Chang-Soo Kim, Minsu Choi, Nohpill Park, Fabrizio Lombardi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent developments for biosensors have been mainly focused on miniaturization and exploratory use of new materials. It should be emphasized that the absence of a novel "in-situ self-calibration/diagnosis technique" that is not connected to an external apparatus is a key obstacle to the realization of a biosensor for continuous use with minimum attendance. To address this deficiency, a novel needle-type biosensor system with fully automated operations is being developed, in which a novel oxidase-coupled amperometric sensor with oxygen depleting/generating actuator is interfaced with an electrochemical instrument and a perfusion system. Labview virtual instrument has been also developed to oversee the …
