A Study Of Three Corrosion Inhibitors For Reinforcing Steel In Sps Solution By Electrochemical Methods, Bing Zhao, Rong-Gui Du, Chang-Jian Lin Nov 2005

A Study Of Three Corrosion Inhibitors For Reinforcing Steel In Sps Solution By Electrochemical Methods, Bing Zhao, Rong-Gui Du, Chang-Jian Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

Some electrochemical techniques such as linear polarization, electrochemical noise and EIShave been employedto study the inhibition behavior of N-lauroyl sarcosinate,β-sodium glycerophosphate and D-sodium gluconate for the reinforcing steel immersed in simulated concrete pore solution(SPS) with NaCl addition. The results show that D-sodium gluconatehas an obvious inhibitive effect for the reinforcing steelin containingCl~(-)SPS solution. It has been proposed that the corrosion inhibition of D-sodium gluconate is due to its competitive adsorption and precipitation on steel surface in the simulated concrete environment.

Detection of chloride ingress and evaluation of its distribution and temporal movement in reinforced concrete structures is an important practical issue. Steel reinforcing bars embedded in good quality concrete are normally protected from corrosion. However, the presence of a sufficient concentration of free chloride ions in the region of the reinforcing steel can initiate the process of corrosion. Therefore, it is important to be able to detect ingress of chloride ions and their distribution in cement-based materials. Moreover, it is important to obtain this information nondestructively. In recent years, near-field microwave nondestructive evaluation methods, using open-ended rectangular waveguide probes, have …

Corrosion Evaluation Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls, Tony L. Beckham, Liecheng Sun, Tommy C. Hopkins Sep 2005

Corrosion Evaluation Of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls, Tony L. Beckham, Liecheng Sun, Tommy C. Hopkins

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Numerous reinforced walls and slopes have been built over the past four decades in Kentucky, the United States, as well as worldwide. Tensile elements used in constructing low-cost reinforcing walls and slopes consist of metal polymer strips or grids. Although reinforced structures have been used extensively, the effects of corrosion on the metal tensile elements are unknown. Mechanically stabilized earth walls are expected to remain stable for many decades. An examination of the effects of corrosion of metal tensile elements used to construct these walls can provide invaluable data regarding the longevity of reinforced walls and slopes. Four mechanically stabilized …

Corrosion Behavior Of Sml,Erw Pipeline Steels Exposed To Seamud, Wei Hua Aug 2005

Corrosion Behavior Of Sml,Erw Pipeline Steels Exposed To Seamud, Wei Hua

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion behavior of API Spec X60 pipeline steels, including electric resistance welding(ERW) and Seamless (SML) types,in sea mud gathered fromYangtse River estuaryof the East China Sea was investigatedthrough linear polarization resistance, potentio-dynamic polarizationand electrochemical impedance measurements. The result indicate the improved corrosion resistance of SML in sea mud. The oxygen diffusion in the cathode zone determines the corrosion behavior of pipeline steel in sea mud.

Comparison Of Near-Field Millimeter-Wave Probes For Detecting Corrosion Precursor Pitting Under Paint, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Sergey Kharkovsky, R. Zoughi, Russell A. Austin Aug 2005

Aircraft structural components such as wings and fuselages are constantly exposed to harsh environments, which make them susceptible to corrosion initiation and growth. To complicate matters, corrosion is normally hidden under paint and primer and cannot be visually detected until significant corrosion has occurred, causing the paint to blister. Corrosion of this type is usually preceded by the presence of corrosion precursor pitting. Hence, early detection of pitting is a critical issue in the maintenance of an aircraft and its structural components. Near-field microwave nondestructive testing techniques have been successfully used for detection of corrosion under paint, including very small …

An Analysis Of Microstructure And Corrosion Resistance In Underwater Friction Stir Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Tad Dee Clark Jun 2005

An Analysis Of Microstructure And Corrosion Resistance In Underwater Friction Stir Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Tad Dee Clark

Theses and Dissertations

An effective procedure and parameter window was developed for underwater friction stir welding (UWFSW) 304L stainless steel with a PCBN tool. UWFSW produced statistically significant: increases in yield strengths, decreases in percent elongation. The ultimate tensile strength was found to be significantly higher at certain parameters. Although sigma was identified in the UWFSWs, a significant reduction of sigma was found in UWFSWs compared to ambient FSWs. The degree of sensitization in UWFSWs was evaluated using double loop EPR testing and oxalic acid electro-etched metallography. Results were compared to base metal, ambient FSW, and arc welds. Upper and lower sensitization localization …

Instrumentation Of Ysz Oxygen Sensor Calibration In Liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, X. Wu, Jian Ma, Yingtao Jiang, B. Fu, W. Hang, J. Zhang, N. Li May 2005

Instrumentation Of Ysz Oxygen Sensor Calibration In Liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, X. Wu, Jian Ma, Yingtao Jiang, B. Fu, W. Hang, J. Zhang, N. Li

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE), a good candidate for the coolant in the subcritical transmutation blanket, is known to be very corrosive to the stainless steel that transports it. Such a corrosion problem can be prevented by producing and maintaining a protective oxide layer on the exposed surface of the stainless steel. Proper formation of the oxide layer critically depends on the accurate measurement and control of the oxygen concentration in liquid LBE. An oxygen sensor calibration/measurement apparatus has been designed and built to deliberately calibrate an yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) oxygen sensor. A detailed description of this system with its …

Avoid Sulfuric Acid Corrosion In Metallic Stacks, João F. Gomes Jan 2005

Avoid Sulfuric Acid Corrosion In Metallic Stacks, João F. Gomes

João F Gomes

Acidic gaseous effluents frequently cause corrosion on metallic stacks. This paper presents a method for prevision of probability of corrosion occurrence caused by gaseous effluents containing sulphur oxides which is based on the sulphur trioxide and moisture content measured in stack
