These are based on the author’s experience and perspective in teaching deterministic and stochastic operations research courses.

Using Open-Ended Design Projects In An Open Lab To Teach Lifelong Learning Skills In An Ic Design Course, David Parent Jun 2004

Using Open-Ended Design Projects In An Open Lab To Teach Lifelong Learning Skills In An Ic Design Course, David Parent

Faculty Publications

The ABET criterion, recognition for and the ability to engage in life-long learning, is one of the most important, given that we as engineering educators can not teach every concept that students will encounter over the span of a 20-40 year career as an engineer. We believe that one method to teach and verify this critical skill in the area of Integrated Circuit (IC) design, is to have the students learn IC CAD tools by following well crafted tutorials and then complete open-ended IC design projects in an open lab. The project is supposed to be a full custom design …

Faculty Publications

A novel approach for three-dimensional (3-D) display systems implemented with a micromirror array was proposed, designed, realized, and tested. The major advantages of this approach include the following: 1 micromirrors are reflective and hence achromatic (panchromatic), 2 a wide variety of displays can be used as image sources, and 3 time multiplexing can be introduced on top of space multiplexing to optimize the viewing zone arrangements. A two-view (left and right) 3-D autostereoscopic display system was first constructed. Left- and right-eye views in the forms of both still and motion 3-D scenes were displayed, and viewers were able to fuse …

Identifying Variable-Length Meaningful Phrases With Correlation Functions, Hyoung-Rae Kim, Philip K. Chan Jun 2004

Identifying Variable-Length Meaningful Phrases With Correlation Functions, Hyoung-Rae Kim, Philip K. Chan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Finding meaningful phrases in a document has been studied in various information retrieval systems in order to improve the performance. Many previous statistical phrase finding methods had different aim such as document classification. Some are hybridized with statistical and syntactic grammatical methods; others use correlation heuristics between words. We propose a new phrase-finding algorithm that adds correlated words one by one to the phrases found in the previous stage, maintaining high correlation within a phrase. Our results indicate that our algorithm finds more meaningful phrases than an existing algorithm. Furthermore, the previous algorithm could be improved by applying different correlation …

Electrical Engineering

We present Synchroscalar, a tile-based architecture for embedded processing that is designed to provide the flexibility of DSPs while approaching the power efficiency of ASICs. We achieve this goal by providing high parallelism and voltage scaling while minimizing control and communication costs. Specifically, Synchroscalar uses columns of processor tiles organized into statically-assigned frequency-voltage domains to minimize power consumption. Furthermore, while columns use SIMD control to minimize overhead, data-dependent computations can be supported by extremely flexible statically-scheduled communication between columns. We provide a detailed evaluation of Synchroscalar including SPICE simulation, wire and device models, synthesis of key components, cycle-level simulation, and …

Effects Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Fusion Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Colin J. Sterling Jun 2004

Effects Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Fusion Welded 304l Stainless Steel, Colin J. Sterling

Theses and Dissertations

Friction stir processing (FSP) has been utilized to locally process regions of arc weldments in 304L stainless steel to improve the microstructure and mechanical performance. The cast microstructure and coarse delta-ferrite has been replaced with a fine-grained wrought microstructure. Furthermore, twins were introduced throughout the friction stir processed region. Although sub-surface sigma and carbides were introduced during FSP, their presence is not expected to adversely affect the resulting mechanical or corrosion properties of friction stir processed 304L arc welds. The resulting mechanical properties of FS processed weldments were also an improvement over as-welded arc welds. FSP resulted in an increase …

Selecting Metal Alloy Electric Contact Materials For Mems Switches, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Paul E. Kladitis, Kevin D. Leedy, Robert L. Crane

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents a method for selecting metal alloys as the electric contact materials for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) metal contact switches. This procedure consists of reviewing macro-switch lessons learned, utilizing equilibrium binary alloy phase diagrams, obtaining thin film material properties and, based on a suitable model, predicting contact resistance performance. After determining a candidate alloy material, MEMS switches were designed, fabricated and tested to validate the alloy selection methodology. Minimum average contact resistance values of 1.17 and 1.87 Ω were measured for micro-switches with gold (Au) and gold–platinum (Au–(6.3%)Pt) alloy electric contacts, respectively. In addition, 'hot-switched' life cycle test results …

A Case Study Of S-Curve Regression Method To Project Control Of Construction Management Via T-S Fuzzy Model, Ting-Ya Hsieh, Morris Hsiao-Lung Wang, Cheng-Wu Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In the contractual business, construction firms are generally more concerned with short-term financial strategies than the longterm ones. Working capital management is the central issue of all short-term financial concerns. Thus, it's urgent to study the cash portion of working capital management to rationalize the amount of cash and current assets possessed in certain time. The S-curve is quite suitable to represent the relationship between project duration and complete progress in practical usage of construction management. Based on the technique of Takagi-Sugeno (T−S) fuzzy model, the fuzzy regression model is constructed for curve fitting problems. According to the cash flow …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this research, we discussed about the wave induced seabed liquefaction at nearshore based on the viewpoint of marine geotechnical engineering. The behaviors of seabed sand under wave loading were evaluated by experiments carried out in the Chien’s cyclic triaxial testing system (type II). Different loading periods, effective confining pressure and relative densities affected the liquefaction resistance of seabed sand that we sampled at northeastern coast in Taiwan. Furthermore, this study proposed the 3-D evaluation method of seabed liquefaction at Yi-Lan nearshore in case that combined the liquefaction resistance of seabed sand and Nearshore Spectral Windwave (NSW) model. The new …

Application Of Genetic Algorithm To The Shape Optimization Of A Constrained Double-Chamber Muffler With Extended Tubes, Long-Jyi Yeh, Ying-Chun Chang, Min-Chie Chiu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

As the compact design of a muffler system within a constrained environment of a existing machine room becomes obligatory, it also becomes essential to maximize the acoustic performance of mufflers under space constraints. In this paper, the shape optimization of a double-chamber muffler with an extended tube is presented. The main characteristic of the solution methodology is the use of genetic algorithm (GA) as the optimizer. In the paper, the acoustic performance of sound transmission loss (STL) derived by transfer matrix is conjugated with the techniques of GA searching. A numerical case of noise elimination in full band noise is …

Lump Circuit Modeling And Matching Consideration On Acoustical Transmitters For Underwater Application, Yeong-Chin Chen, Sean Wu, Cheng-Che Tsai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In underwater environment the acoustical wave can transmit a long ranges away from the transmitter than the electromagnetic wave does. So far, the piezoelectric ceramic is still the best candidate as acoustical telemetry transmitters in underwater applications. The impedance matching on the interface between electro-acoustical transducer and electrical transmitter has been the most important subject to confirm the high transmitting efficiency. In this research, a lumped equivalent circuit of electro-acoustic transducer is proposed. Then, the network theorem is implemented to design a high power transformer for impedance matching, and to improve the electro-acoustic efficiency of the transducer. In the developing …

The Study On The Convex And Lmi Conditions For Static Output Feedback Stabilization, Pang-Chia Chen, Koan-Yuh Chang, Yaug-Fea Jeng, Wen-Jer Chang Jun 2004

The Study On The Convex And Lmi Conditions For Static Output Feedback Stabilization, Pang-Chia Chen, Koan-Yuh Chang, Yaug-Fea Jeng, Wen-Jer Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, the problem of static output feedback stabilization is considered. By congruence and state-coordinate transformations, a convex condition for static output feedback stabilization is given in terms of a matrix linear inequality while subject to an equality constraint. To facilitate stabilization design via LMI conditions, the equality constraint is satisfied by imposing a structure constraint on matrix variable. Moreover, a numerical construction algorithm and a sufficient condition for the presented convex condition are given as well. Finally, numerical examples demonstrated the utility of the proposed approach for static output feedback stabilization.

Re-Examination Of “Missing Strain” During Superplastic Deformation Of Aa7475, M. J. Tan, C. L. Chen, Namas Chandra

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

“Missing strain,” a discrepancy between the total macroscopic strain and the strain contributed by grain boundary sliding (GBS) during superplastic deformation, appears to exist in previous investigations. In this work, the contri¬bution of GBS (ξGBS) and intragranular strain (ξIG) were simultaneously measured using scratch test conducted on AA7475 samples after deformation at 500 °C at initial strain rate of 10-3 s-1. The result shows that the missing strain results most probably from the neglect of the intragranular strain as well as the anisotropic GBS-induced underesti¬mation of ξGBS. The calculation of ξ …

A Two-Stage Optimization Of Piece Arrangement For The Cutting Problem In Shipbuilding, Tso-Chung Sung, Wei-Chu Weng, Chien-Tung Yang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper a two-stage optimization of piece arrangement for the cutting problem in shipbuilding is proposed. The two-stage optimization consists of a new technique, which is named as preselection and elimination technique (PSET), at the first stage and tabu search method at the second stage. Applying the new technique PSET, certain longer orders, which are chosen by a control factor, will be matched with some other shorter ones to fit the stock of shaped steel. Once these orders are selected, they will be eliminated from the whole orders. After the first stage, a tabu search approach is applied to …

Tracking Control Of A Ship By Pi-Type Sliding Controller, Ker-Wei Yu, Chen-En Wu Jun 2004

Tracking Control Of A Ship By Pi-Type Sliding Controller, Ker-Wei Yu, Chen-En Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, the tracking control of ship maneuvering by a modified PI-type sliding controller is investigated. This scheme is composed of three components. The first component is the equivalent control, which is designed to assure that the state trajectory of the system remains in the sliding surface and the nominal system is stable in the absence of system uncertainties and disturbance. The second and third components are proportional-type and integral-type variable structure controllers, respectively. Several numerical examples of ship handling, namely course keeping, course changing, and course tracking are given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed control scheme.

Stability Analysis On The Initial Surface-Wave Generation With An Air-Sea Coupled Shear Flow, Wu-Ting Tsai, Mei-Ying Lin Jun 2004

Stability Analysis On The Initial Surface-Wave Generation With An Air-Sea Coupled Shear Flow, Wu-Ting Tsai, Mei-Ying Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The temporal instability of a two-dimensional perturbed wave in a coupled air-water shear flow is considered to study the generation and initial growth of wavelets by the air flow. A robust numerical method is developed to solve the coupled Orr-Sommerfeld equations and the interfacial conditions governing the linear viscous instability of the perturbed flow. Calculations of the growth rates and phase speeds of the unstable wavelets compare well with the early theoretical as well as numerical predictions, and also reveal that the discrepancy in the numerical results of Wheless and Csanady (1993) indeed are due to erroneous calculations. Dependence of …

Analysis Of Dynamic Characteristics For Wide Slider Bearings With An Exponential Film Profile, Jaw-Ren Lin, Chi-Ren Hung Jun 2004

Analysis Of Dynamic Characteristics For Wide Slider Bearings With An Exponential Film Profile, Jaw-Ren Lin, Chi-Ren Hung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Analysis of dynamic characteristics plays an important role in designing hydrodynamic bearings. Based upon the thin-film lubrication theory, the analysis of dynamic characteristics for a wide slider with exponential film profiles is presented when taking into account the bearing squeezing action. By applying a small perturbation technique to the dynamic Reynolds-type equation, both of the steadystate performance and the dynamic characteristics are then evaluated. Comparing with those of slider bearings with an inclined-plane film shape, higher values of the load-carrying capacity, stiffness coefficient and damping coefficient are predicted for the bearing with larger values of the inlet-outlet film ratio. These …

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The basic objectives of site-specific management of agricultural inputs are to increase profitability of crop production, improve product quality, and protect the environment. Information about the variability of different soil attributes within a field is essential for the decision-making process. The inability to obtain soil characteristics rapidly and inexpensively remains one of the biggest limitations of precision agriculture. Numerous researchers and manufacturers have attempted to develop on-the-go soil sensors to measure mechanical, physical and chemical soil properties. The sensors have been based on electrical and electromagnetic, optical and radiometric, mechanical, acoustic, pneumatic, and electrochemical measurement concepts. While only electric and …

Optimization Of A Quantum Cascade Laser Operating In The Terahertz Frequency Range Using A Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm, Traci A. Keller Jun 2004

Optimization Of A Quantum Cascade Laser Operating In The Terahertz Frequency Range Using A Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm, Traci A. Keller

Theses and Dissertations

A quantum cascade (QC) laser is a specific type of semiconductor laser that operates through principles of quantum mechanics. In less than a decade QC lasers are already able to outperform previously designed double heterostructure semiconductor lasers. Because there is a genuine lack of compact and coherent devices which can operate in the far-infrared region the motivation exists for designing a terahertz QC laser. A device operating at this frequency is expected to be more efficient and cost effective than currently existing devices. It has potential applications in the fields of spectroscopy, astronomy, medicine and free-space communication as well as …
