Polymer-Based Wide-Angle Micro -Optic Lens System With Dynamically Variable Focal Length And Field Of View, Mangilal Agarwal Oct 2004

Polymer-Based Wide-Angle Micro -Optic Lens System With Dynamically Variable Focal Length And Field Of View, Mangilal Agarwal

Doctoral Dissertations

A novel polymer-based integrated wide-angle dynamic micro-optical lens system that can provide variable focal length and field of view (FOV) with large numerical aperture is designed, fabricated, and tested for its optical characteristics.

Initial experiments were conducted using static glass lenses to test for configuration of lenses that could provide wide FOV. From these initial experiments, it was found that the higher FOV could be achieved with double concave (DCV) lenses compared to double convex (DCX) lenses of the same focal length. Further, it was observed that increasing the number of DCV lenses increases FOV. Thus, an integrated dynamic polymer …

Layer-By-Layer Self -Assembly For Enzyme And Dna Encapsulation And Delivery, Amish Patel

Doctoral Dissertations

Thin wall microcapsules were formed via Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly of alternate adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte on microcores. After the core dissolution, empty polymeric shells with 20–25 nm thick walls were obtained. These microcapsules were loaded with Myoglobin, Hemoglobin and Glucose Oxidase by opening capsule pores at low pH and closing them at higher pH. The native structure of the enzyme was not affected due to different treatments. Biocompatible nanoshells were also prepared for encasing DNA. Using the same Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly approach nanoparticle were constructed containing DNA as one of the layers. The nanoparticles of different architecture were used to deliver …

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this work is to investigate the combination of layer-by-layer self-assembly with microfabrication technology and its applications in microelectronics and MEMS.

One can assemble, on a standard silicon wafer, needed multilayers containing different nanoparticles and polymers and then apply various micromanufacturing techniques to form microdevices with nanostructured elements.

Alternate layer-by-layer self-assembly of linear polyions and colloidal silica at elevated temperatures have been firstly studied by QCM and SEM. LbL self-assembly and photolithography were combined to fabricate an indium resistor. The RTA method was employed in the fabrication. Hot-embossing technique as a reasonably fast and moderately expensive technique was …

Convergence Properties Of An Interval Probabilistic Approach To System Reliability Estimation, Cliff Joslyn, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2004

Convergence Properties Of An Interval Probabilistic Approach To System Reliability Estimation, Cliff Joslyn, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Based on a black box model of a complex system, and on intervals and probabilities describing the known information about the inputs, we want to estimate the system's reliability. Using the results of tests performed on the system's computer model, we can estimate the lower and upper bounds of the probability that the system is in a desirable state. In this paper, we prove that these estimates are correct in the sense that under reasonable assumptions, these estimates converge to the actual probability bounds.

The Effect Of Crosswind And Turbulence In Mental Workload And Pilot Tracking Performance, Bruno E. Vivaldi Oct 2004

The Effect Of Crosswind And Turbulence In Mental Workload And Pilot Tracking Performance, Bruno E. Vivaldi

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of crosswind and turbulence on mental workload and pilot tracking performance. Based on previous research, it was believed that as the amount of crosswind and turbulence is increased, mental workload would increase and tracking performance would decrease. The objective was to estimate the impact that crosswind and turbulence, of varying degrees, had on performance and workload. Fifteen full time college student volunteers served as experimental participants in a simulated horizontal and vertical tracking task. Each participant flew twelve instrument approaches, experiencing a different crosswind and turbulence combination during each approach. …

The Non-Destructive And Nano-Microstructural Characterization Of Thermal-Barrier Coatings, Y. H. Sohn, B. Jayaraj, S. Laxman, B. Franke, J. W. Byeon, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) plays an important role in the service reliability and maintainability of hot-section components in advanced turbine engines for aerospace and utility applications. Photostimulated luminescence spectroscopy (PSLS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are being concurrently developed as complimentary nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for quality control and liferemain assessment of TBCs. This paper discusses recent achievements in understanding the residual stress, phase constituents, and electrochemical resistance (or capacitance) of TBC constituents—with an emphasis on the thermally grown oxide. Results from NDE by PSLS and EIS are correlated to the nano- and microstructural development of TBCs.

Haemophilic Factors Produced By Transgenic Livestock: Abundance That Can Enable Alternative Therapies Worldwide, Kevin E. Van Cott, Paul E. Monahan, Timothy C. Nichols, William H. Velander Oct 2004

Haemophilic Factors Produced By Transgenic Livestock: Abundance That Can Enable Alternative Therapies Worldwide, Kevin E. Van Cott, Paul E. Monahan, Timothy C. Nichols, William H. Velander

Papers in Biotechnology

Haemophilia replacement factors, both plasma-derived and recombinant, are in relatively short supply and are high-cost products. This has stymied the study and development of alternative methods of administration of haemophilia therapy even in the most economically advanced countries, owing to the large amounts of material needed because bioabsorption and bioavailability of haemophilic factors can be less than 10% when using non-intravenous routes of delivery. There is therefore a need to increase access to therapy worldwide by decreasing the cost and increasing the abundance so that therapy can be achieved through simplified, alternative delivery methods. Transgenic livestock have been used to …

Biomimetic Synthesis Within Polyelectrolyte Microcapsules: Characterization Of Enzyme Catalyzed Polyphenols And Polypeptides, Rohit C. Ghan Oct 2004

Biomimetic Synthesis Within Polyelectrolyte Microcapsules: Characterization Of Enzyme Catalyzed Polyphenols And Polypeptides, Rohit C. Ghan

Doctoral Dissertations

An enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of novel polymers within layer-by-layer (LbL) constructed polyelectrolyte microcapsules has been developed. This approach is based on the selective permeability of polyelectrolyte-capsule walls to monomer molecules. Conversely biocatalysts and forming polymeric chains cannot exit the micro-capsule interior because of their characteristic high molecular weight. Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) was encapsulated into four bilayer PSS (poly-styrenesulfonate)/PAH (poly-allylamine hydrochloride) capsules with an average diameter of 5 μm using pH-driven pore opening. The polymerization of 4-(2-Aminoethyl) phenol hydrochloride (tyramine) catalyzed by HRP produces easily detectable fluorescent polymeric products after the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the system. It is known that …

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng Oct 2004

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this research is the development of computational approaches to understanding the physical basis of layer-by-layer assembly (LBL), a key methodology of nanomanufacturing. The results provided detailed information on structure which cannot be obtained directly by experiments.

The model systems chosen for study are polypeptide chains. Reasons for this are that polypeptides are no less polyelectrolytes than the more usual polyions, and one can control the primary structure of a polypeptide on a residue-by-residue basis using modern synthetic methods. Moreover, as peptides constitute one of the four major classes of biological macromolecules, research in this direction is expected …

Extended Operation Of Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine Oct 2004

Extended Operation Of Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recent research in flying capacitor multilevel inverters (FCMIs) has shown that the number of voltage levels can be extended by changing the ratio of the capacitor voltages. For the three-cell FCMI, four levels of operation are expected if the traditional ratio of the capacitor voltages is 1:2:3. However, by altering the ratio, the inverter can operate as a five-, six-, seven-, or eight-level inverter. According to previous research, the eight-level case is referred to as maximally distended (or full binary combination schema) since it utilizes all possible transistor switching states. However, this case does not have enough per-phase redundancy to …

Adaptive Synchronization Of Chaos For Secure Communication, Manish Pantha Oct 2004

Adaptive Synchronization Of Chaos For Secure Communication, Manish Pantha

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to study the use of adaptive synchronization of chaos for secure communication. Several non-linear models were studied, the one-dimensional logistic map, two-dimensional coupled logistic map, three dimensional Lorenz systems with and without time delay. Numerical simulation using MATLAB was conducted. The Lorenz system with time delay was studied numerically as well as by testing an analog circuit and comparisons was made between them. It has been pointed out in many research papers that for low-dimensional chaotic processes, once intercepted, the information can be readily extracted, so the interest has been directed to higher dimensional …

Bottleneck Analysis Of Cports, Sreekalyana Chakravarthy Kajuluri Oct 2004

Bottleneck Analysis Of Cports, Sreekalyana Chakravarthy Kajuluri

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

CPortS is a transportation logistics simulation that models the flow of military cargo through a seaport and the interaction of the cargo with the port resources and infrastructure. It provides information about the seaport's capabilities, how the cargo has been handled, how many days the cargo took to clear a particular port area, and the overall throughput of the seaport. The model is highly data intensive since it models the huge traffic in a real seaport.

Bottlenecks reduce system performance. Systems that are traffic intensive or simulations of systems, which are data intensive, encounter bottlenecks, which reduce their performance. In …

Hierarchical Hybrid Multicast An End System Multicast Algorithm Approach, Guillermo Loaisiga

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Due to the rapid development in the computer and communication technologies, the Internet is experiencing an increasing demand of high-speed, real-time distributed applications, such as live streaming multimedia, videoconferencing, distributed simulations, and multiparty games. Multicast is an efficient transmission mechanism to support these applications. Historically, IP Multicast (IPM) has provided multicast support with well-known benefits, especially in bandwidth savings. However, it has experienced little deployment due to economic and architectural limitations.

Overlay multicast holds promise for the implementation of large scale Internet multicast services. An overlay network is a virtual topology constructed on top of the Internet infrastructure. This concept …

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy Oct 2004

Application Of Queuing Theory And Procedure Time Estimation In A Local Healthcare System, Galina Tsoy

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

People in the United States pay more for their basic healthcare needs than do people in any other nation in the world. When we consider that the United States is the wealthiest nation in the world, controlling the majority of the world's resources, it seems only reasonable to ask: Why should it be this way?

In an effort to address this problem, this thesis examines two possible methods of improving health care efficiency in hospitals. The thesis is thus in two parts: the first part examines resource allocation in medical units using Queuing Theory, and the second part examines a …

Swing-Up And Balancing Nonlinear Control For A Rotational Inverted Pendulum, Jiang Wang Oct 2004

Swing-Up And Balancing Nonlinear Control For A Rotational Inverted Pendulum, Jiang Wang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, nonlinear controllers are designed for the swing-up and balance modes of a rotational inverted pendulum, which is a pendulum hinged on a horizontally rotating link. The proposed control algorithms are designed by partial feedback linearization and sliding mode control techniques, for swing-up and balancing respectively. First a mathematical model of the pendulum dynamics is derived, followed by experimental verification. Then the system model is partially linearized, which makes it possible for the system to track a simple desired trajectory with "pump energy" function. Then a swing-up controller is designed. For an under-actuated mechanical system, like the inverted …

Admittance Selection For Force-Guided Assembly Of Polygonal Parts Despite Friction, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels Oct 2004

Admittance Selection For Force-Guided Assembly Of Polygonal Parts Despite Friction, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

An important issue in the development of force guidance assembly strategies is the specification of an appropriate admittance control law. This paper identifies conditions to be satisfied when selecting the appropriate admittance to achieve force-guided assembly of polygonal parts for multipoint contact with friction. These conditions restrict the admittance behavior for each of the various one-point and two-point contact cases and ensure that the motion that results from contact reduces part misalignment for each case. We show that, for bounded friction and part misalignments, if the identified conditions are satisfied for a finite number of contact configurations and friction coefficients, …

Accelerated Maintenance Painting – Jefferson County Federal Aid Research Task No. 135, Sudhir Palle, Theodore Hopwood Ii

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) conducted an experimental project to investigate the use of accelerated maintenance painting on several overpass and elevated steel structures (74,000 ft2) in Louisville. Accelerated maintenance painting procedures specified for this project entailed limited access for the painting contractor coupled with incentives/disincentives to complete each phase of the work involving traffic closures on the underlying roadways. The approach was coupled with the use of abrasive blasting for surface preparation and the application of a rapid-cure 2-coat paint system to facilitate the work.

The project was let for $402,800. The contractor proceeded to paint 4 spans designated …

Evaluation Of Current Incentive/Disincentive Procedures In Construction, Brad W. Rister, Yuhong Wang Oct 2004

Evaluation Of Current Incentive/Disincentive Procedures In Construction, Brad W. Rister, Yuhong Wang

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study was initiated to take an in-depth look at the current time and material incentive/disincentive program associated with highway construction projects in Kentucky. The current incentive/disincentive program was first initiated in the mid to late 90’s. However, not until recently had some of the original mechanisms of the program been revisited and/or up-dated.

From the early stages of this study it was anticipated that many of the concerns regarding the use of both time/material incentives and disincentives on highway construction projects in Kentucky would be addressed. Therefore, at the onset of this project the study advisory committee made a …
