Resonant Inversion Of Tunneling Magnetoresistance, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Andrei Sokolov, Ildar F. Sabiryanov, Bernard Doudin

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Resonant tunneling via localized states in the barrier can invert magnetoresistance in magnetic tunnel junctions. Experiments performed on electrodeposited Ni/NiO/Co nanojunctions of area smaller than 0.01 μm2 show that both positive and negative values of magnetoresistance are possible. Calculations based on Landauer-Bu¨ttiker theory explain this behavior in terms of disorder-driven statistical variations in magnetoresistance with a finite probability of inversion due to resonant tunneling.

Comparison Study Of Cooling Fins And Chills Effectiveness In Aluminum Sand Mold Casting, Vladimir E. Kouznetsov May 2003

Comparison Study Of Cooling Fins And Chills Effectiveness In Aluminum Sand Mold Casting, Vladimir E. Kouznetsov

Graduate Research Papers

Besides proper design of gating and risering systems, there are several methods used to control and modify solidification behavior of cast alloys. Within these methods, the most widely used are local cooling aids employing cooling fins (thin segments attached to problematic areas of casting) or external chills (metal inserts placed into mold walls to accelerate heat withdrawing from potential hot spot). The later helps to promote directional solidification when traditional methods are not possible to use due to limitations related to the casting design. Despite relatively wide application in aluminum foundries, there are no specific recommendations on cooling aids parameters …

Designing Active Smart Features To Provide Nesting Forces In Exactly Constrained Assemblies, Eric Pearce May 2003

Designing Active Smart Features To Provide Nesting Forces In Exactly Constrained Assemblies, Eric Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

Ever since the design and manufacture of products moved from the craftsman era where individual craftsman designed and manufactured the entire product, to the mass production era, where skilled laborers were crafting interchangeable parts or in some cases single features on interchangeable parts, variation in assemblies has been a major concern to designers, manufacturers, and in a more subtle way, customers. Variation, in the end, affects quality, performance and the cost of products. One particular type of design that is particularly robust to variation is an exactly constrained design.

Several researchers have recently explored the topic of exact constraint design. …

Method And Apparatus For Modulating Digital Data, Jack Glas, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Maurice Tarsia

Electrical Engineering

The modulator includes an oscillator generating signals, each having a different phase, and a selector receiving digital data. When the digital data received by the selector changes logic state, the selector supplies a first and second plurality of signals generated by the oscillator to first and second non-linear amplifiers, respectively. An adder then adds the output of each amplifier to generate a radio frequency output.

Design Of A Pedestrian Bridge System Across Lake Kernan At Southern University, Symoane A. Mizell May 2003

Design Of A Pedestrian Bridge System Across Lake Kernan At Southern University, Symoane A. Mizell

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

Bridges are of the oldest structural challenges that engineers have encountered, they typify progress more than any other structures built by man. Throughout the course of history, bridges have provided dual purposes of serving as adjuncts between land bodies and also of acting as aesthetic marks of beauty. The idea that the addition of a bridge and other aesthetic structures across the lake would help cure some of Lake Kernan' s ills is the motivation for this design project and this thesis. This design project is a valuable lesson for the members of this design group. The project encompasses many …

The Use Of Fuzzy Measures As A Data Fusion Tool In Geographic Information Systems: Case Study, Cynthia Campos, George R. Keller, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre, Francois Modave, Scott A. Starks, Roberto Torres

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Geospatial databases generally consist of measurements related to points (or pixels in the case of raster data), lines, and polygons. In recent years, the size and complexity of these databases have increased significantly and they often contain duplicate records, i.e., two or more close records representing the same measurement result. In this paper, we use fuzzy measures to address the problem of detecting duplicates in a database consisting of point measurements. As a test case, we use a database of measurements of anomalies in the Earth's gravity field that we have compiled. We show that a natural duplicate deletion algorithm …

Structural And Diffusional Effects Of Hydrogen In Tini, Alan R. Pelton, Christine Trépanier, Xiao-Yan Gong, Andreas Wick, Katherine C. Chen May 2003

Structural And Diffusional Effects Of Hydrogen In Tini, Alan R. Pelton, Christine Trépanier, Xiao-Yan Gong, Andreas Wick, Katherine C. Chen

Materials Engineering

Hydrogen can be inadvertently added to Nitinol medical devices through electropolishing, caustic cleaning, or exposure to other acidic or basic solutions. Moderately high hydrogen concentrations can lead to embrittlement characterized by lowered ductility and changes in transformation behavior. The purpose of the present report is to discuss recent results on the effects of hydrogen in annealed TiNi. Samples are charged with hydrogen and analyzed with x-ray diffraction; these data indicate that even relatively small amounts of hydrogen can affect the crystal structure. Additions of up to 1000 wppm hydrogen increase the atomic volume by more than 2%, decrease peak intensity …

Using Satellite Imagery To Evaluate The Impact Of Urban Forest On Summertime Residential Electricity Consumption In Terre Haute, Indiana, Usa, James R. Boulton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urban areas are horne to a large portion of the population of the United States and also a significant portion ofthe nation's forest resource. This urban forest contributes to the richness of the urban lifestyle in many ways, including aesthetic improvements, cleaning and protecting air, land, and water resources, and reducing the urban heat island effect. This thesis studies the degree to which energy reduction attributable to the urban forest can be determined using remotely sensed data. Results showed a slight inverse relationship between urban forest density and energy usage, meaning that as the density of trees increases there is …

Complexity And Approximation Studies Of Finding Polynomially Bounded Length Plans For Temporal Goals, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich, Sudeshna Sarkar, Nam Tran, Raul Trejo, Xin Zhang May 2003

Complexity And Approximation Studies Of Finding Polynomially Bounded Length Plans For Temporal Goals, Chitta Baral, Vladik Kreinovich, Sudeshna Sarkar, Nam Tran, Raul Trejo, Xin Zhang

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we consider the problem of planning with temporal goals, focussing on polynomially bounded length plans. Past results about complexity of planning are mostly about finding plans that take the world to one of several desired states, often described using a goal formula. We first consider goals expressed using linear temporal logic and analyze the complexity of planning with respect to such goals for both when the states in the trajectory are complete states, and when they are incomplete states. For the later case we also develop a notion of approximate planning and show its complexity to be …

Robust Methodology For Characterizing System Response To Damage: Approach Based On Partial Order, Paul J. Tanenbaum, Carlos De La Mora, Piotr Wojciechowski, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks, Alexandr V. Kuzminykh

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To describe the response of engineering complex systems to various damage mechanics, engineers have traditionally use number-valued utilities to describe the results of different possible outcomes, and (number-valued) probabilities (often, subjective probabilities) to describe the relative frequency of different outcomes. This description is based on the assumption that experts can always make a definite preference between two possible outcomes, i.e., that the set of all outcomes is linearly (totally) ordered. In practice, experts often cannot make a choice, their preference is only a partial order.

Dam Design For Pastoral Stock Water Supplies, J S. Addison, R J. Law, G B. Eliot May 2003

Dam Design For Pastoral Stock Water Supplies, J S. Addison, R J. Law, G B. Eliot

Bulletins 4000 -

These notes provide information on many components of water harvesting storage systems designed for use in semi-arid areas. The notion of a water harvesting and storage system is deliberately emphasised. No single design component can be considered in isolation if the goal of a drought-proof water supply is to be achieved.

A drought-proof surface water supply is achieved by integrating the many design components of a water harvesting/storage system into a practical plan.

Web Crippling Of Cold Formed Steel Multi-Web Deck Sections Subjected To End One-Flange Loading, J. A. Wallace, R. M. Schuster May 2003

Web Crippling Of Cold Formed Steel Multi-Web Deck Sections Subjected To End One-Flange Loading, J. A. Wallace, R. M. Schuster

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)

The “North American Specification for the Design of Cold Formed Steel Structural Members” (2001a) (herein referred to as NAS), established in 2001, governs the design of cold formed steel structural members in North America. Given in the specification are equations to predict the various failure modes of cold formed steel members in compression, tension, shear, and bending. The concern of this study was the failure mode called web crippling, which is the deformation of the web elements under concentrated compression loads. It is difficult (if not impossible) to develop an analytical design method for web crippling of cold formed steel …

Assessment And Modeling Of Stream Mitigation Procedures [2003], Bernadette S. Dupont, Sudhir Palle May 2003

Assessment And Modeling Of Stream Mitigation Procedures [2003], Bernadette S. Dupont, Sudhir Palle

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

As population increases, so does the need to improve and augment the road network. Construction of new roadways or modification of existing roads often requires diversion or modification of streams. If a stream is disturbed, government regulations require mitigation or compensatory replacement of the affected area in a similar environment. Stream mitigation is of particular importance in Kentucky, as Kentucky ranks second in the United States for having the most miles of waterways. Consequently, stream mitigation has become a significant factor in roadway construction costs. To date, no studies have been made to assess the execution of the mitigation plans …

Assessing The Benefits Of Misting–Cooling Systems For Growing/Finishing Swine As Affected By Environment And Pig Placement Date, Thomas C. Bridges, Larry W. Turner, Richard S. Gates, Douglas G. Overhults

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The NCPIG swine growth model was used to evaluate swine growth performance for Wilmington, North Carolina; Bardstown and Mayfield, Kentucky; and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as influenced by the use of a misting–cooling system. Five pig placement dates (Julian days 106, 126, 146, 166, and 186) were evaluated for each location using 22 years of weather data (1978–1999). The use of a misting system, while quite variable, was found to be generally profitable, reducing the length of the time to reach market weight. As the placement date increased, the average return to misting ($/pig/year) decreased from $8.12 to $1.98 for Oklahoma …

A Study On Influence Of Guard Band On Common-Mode Current Related To A Microstrip Line, Yoshiki Kayano, Motoshi Tanaka, James L. Drewniak, Hiroshi Inoue

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Influence of guard band on common-mode (CM) current related to a microstrip line (trace) has been studied experimental and FDTD simulation. As the guard band, copper tape is connected along the entire edge of the ground plane. It is cleared that a guard band parallel to and near a trace is most effective in suppressing the CM current. An empirical formula to quantify the relationship between the position of a trace and CM current of the case with a guard band is proposed. Calculated results using the empirical formula and FDTD modeling are in good agreement, which indicates this empirical …

Spatial And Temporal Considerations In Vehicle Path Tracking With An Emphasis On Spatial Robustness, Donald L. Cripps May 2003

Spatial And Temporal Considerations In Vehicle Path Tracking With An Emphasis On Spatial Robustness, Donald L. Cripps

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation researches the task and path management of an autonomous vehicle with Ackerman-type steering.

The task management problem was approached as a path training operation in which a human operator drives the desired path through an environment. A training trajectory is converted into a series of path segments that are driveable by the autonomous vehicle by first fitting a general path to the dataset. Next, transition segments are added to the general path to match the vehicle velocity and steering angle rate limit.

The path management problem has been approached by first deriving a kine- matic model of the …

Electromagnetic Modeling Of Saltwater Ingress In Mortar At Microwave Frequencies, Shanup Peer, R. Zoughi, K. E. Kurtis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Corrosion of reinforcing steel is a major cause of damage and deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, as the presence of a sufficient concentration of chloride ions can lead to the onset of corrosion in embedded steel, it is of utmost importance to be able to determine the free salt content and its distribution in these materials. Moreover, it is important to obtain this information nondestructively. Previous investigations have shown the capability of near-field microwave nondestructive evaluation methods, using open-ended rectangular waveguide probes, to evaluate many important properties of cement-based materials. In this Investigation, the temporal microwave reflection properties of …

Developing The Next Generation Of Technological Aids To Effective Public Involvement In Public Transportation Planning & Design, C. Anneta Arno Anneta, Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt

Kentucky Transportation Center Faculty and Researcher Publications

Problem

Public involvement in the design of complex public infrastructure solutions, such as a new light rail line, including stops, stations and transit centers, and associated Transit- Oriented Developments (TOD), often relies on lengthy public meetings during which the complexities and subtleties of design preferences, their articulation and communication is overwhelming to both participants and design professionals. Such gatherings can produce more confusion than clarity for the public and design professional alike, especially when strong personalities highlight differences and discourage compromise and consensus. More effective methods of discerning, developing and evaluating the nature of the public’s different preferences and perspectives, …
