Fuzzy Logic In Collective Robotic Search, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One important application of mobile robots is searching a geographical region to locate the origin of a specific sensible phenomenon. We first propose a fuzzy logic approach using a decision table. A novel fuzzy rule based was designed. And then a fuzzy search strategy is adopted by utilizing the three tier centers of mass coordination. Experimental results show that fuzzy logic algorithm is an efficient approach for the collective robots to locate the target source. In addition, noise and the position of the target affect the searching result.

Implementation Of Adaptive Critic-Based Neurocontrollers For Turbogenerators In A Multimachine Power System, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Donald C. Wunsch, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the design and practical hardware implementation of optimal neurocontrollers that replace the conventional automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and the turbine governor of turbogenerators on multimachine power systems. The neurocontroller design uses a powerful technique of the adaptive critic design (ACD) family called dual heuristic programming (DHP). The DHP neurocontroller's training and testing are implemented on the Innovative Integration M67 card consisting of the TMS320C6701 processor. The measured results show that the DHP neurocontrollers are robust and their performance does not degrade unlike the conventional controllers even when a power system stabilizer (PSS) is included, for changes in …

Locating Moving Objects Over Mobile Sensor Network, Arvind Nath Rapaka, Sandeep Bogollu, Donald C. Wunsch, Ravindra Nath

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of our on going research would be to track entities, which enter their field of vision over the sensor network. Based on their sightings, they maintain a dynamic cache that can be queried by a base station- a stationary orfixed node. Since transmitting messages consumes a lot of energy, as against local processing and moreover the limited energy in sensor node does not allow heavy duty computing, we need to develop algorithms that will ensure efficient computing and minimal transmission without degradation of performance. and also data is stored locally, and memory is finite, the nodes must choose …

Multilevel Inverter-Based Dual-Frequency Power Supply, B. Diong, Keith Corzine, S. Basireddy, Shuai Lu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most existing power supplies for induction heating equipment produce voltage at a single (adjustable) frequency. Recently, however, induction heating power supplies that produce voltage at two (adjustable) frequencies simultaneously have been introduced and commercialized. These represent a significant development particularly for heat-treating workpieces with uneven geometries, such as gears. Still, the existing approaches to dual-frequency voltage generation could be improved upon to achieve better control, higher efficiency, and reduced electromagnetic interference. This letter proposes the use of multilevel inverters for providing power at two frequencies simultaneously. It describes how the stepping angles for the desired output from such inverters can …

The Subcircuit Extraction Problem, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch, Frank Harary Jan 2003

The Subcircuit Extraction Problem, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch, Frank Harary

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The steady down scaling of CMOS device dimensions has been the main stimulus to the growth of microelectronics and computer aided very large scale integration (VLSI) design. But the more an integrated circuit (IC) is scaled, the higher its packing density becomes. The increasing size of chips, measured in either area or number of transistors, and the waste of the large capital investment involved in fabricating and testing circuits that do not work, make layout analysis and verification an important part of physical design automation. The most efficient way to overcome these difficulties is to identify a related collection of …

The crucial factor affecting the modern power systems today is load flow control. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) provides an effective means for controlling the power flow and improving the transient stability in a power network. The UPFC has fast complex dynamics and its conventional control is based on a linearized model of the power system. This paper presents the design of a neurocontroller that controls the power flow and regulates voltage along a transmission line. The continually online neurocontroller is used for controlling the series inverter of UPFC. Simulation results carried out in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment are presented …

A Nested Sensor Array Focusing On Near Field Targets, Y. Rosa Zheng, M. El-Tanany, R. A. Goubran

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A nested virtual array subband beamforming system is proposed for applications where broadband signal targets are located within the near field of the array. Subband multirate processing and near field beamforming techniques are used jointly for the nested array to improve the performances and reduce the computational complexity. A new noise model, namely the broadband near field spherically isotropic noise model, is also proposed for the optimization design of near field beamformers. It is shown that near field beamforming is essential for better distance discrimination of near field targets, reduced beampattern variations for broadband signals, and stronger reverberation suppression.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the dual heuristic programming (DHP) optimization algorithm is used for the design of a nonlinear optimal neurocontroller that replaces the proportional-integral (PI) based conventional linear controller (CONVC) in the internal control of a power electronic converter based series compensator in the electric power transmission system. The performance of the proposed DHP based neurocontroller is compared with that of the CONVC with respect to damping low frequency oscillations. Simulation results using the PSCAD/EMTDC software package are presented.

A Statistical Simulation Model For Mobile Radio Fading Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Y. Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, a Clarke's model-based simulator was proposed for Rayleigh fading channels. However, that model, as shown in this paper, may encounter statistic deficiency. Therefore, an improved model is presented to remove the statistic deficiency. Furthermore, a new simulation model is proposed for Rician fading channels. This Rician fading simulator with finite number of sinusoids plus a zero-mean stochastic sinusoid as the specular (line-of-sight) component is different from all the existing Rician fading simulators, which have non-zero mean deterministic specular component. The statistical properties of the proposed Rayleigh and Rician fading channel models are analyzed in detail, which shows that these …

A Study Of The Probe Induced Disturbances On The Near-Field Measurement, Jin Shi, Richard E. Dubroff, Kevin P. Slattery, Masahiro Yamaguchi, K.-I. Arai

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Numerical simulations were used to investigate the disturbance introduced by placing a small magnetic loop probe in the near field of a driven loop. In the absence of the loop probe, the numerical simulations were compared with an approximate closed-form analytical expression for the magnetic field produced by the driven loop. The agreement between the approximate analytical results and the simulation was good. The next set of simulations was based on a physical model that included the probe and showed that the probe does exert an effect on the field being measured. Examples of these simulations and their implications on …

Combining Evolving Neural Network Classifiers Using Bagging, Sunghwan Sohn, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 2003

Combining Evolving Neural Network Classifiers Using Bagging, Sunghwan Sohn, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of the neural network classifier significantly depends on its architecture and generalization. It is usual to find the proper architecture by trial and error. This is time consuming and may not always find the optimal network. For this reason, we apply genetic algorithms to the automatic generation of neural networks. Many researchers have provided that combining multiple classifiers improves generalization. One of the most effective combining methods is bagging. In bagging, training sets are selected by resampling from the original training set and classifiers trained with these sets are combined by voting. We implement the bagging technique into …

Analysis Of Simple Two-Capacitor Low-Pass Filters, Todd H. Hubing, David Pommerenke, Theodore M. Zeeff, Thomas Van Doren

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The performance of typical low-pass capacitor filters is limited by the mutual inductance between the input and output sides of the filter. This paper describes how two appropriately spaced capacitors can be used to construct a low-pass filter with significantly better high-frequency performance than a one-capacitor filter. Laboratory measurements and numerical simulations are used to quantify the mutual inductance and compare the performance of one- and two-capacitor low-pass filters.

Voltage Balancing Control Of Diode-Clamped Multilevel Rectifier/Inverter Systems, Zhiguo Pan, Keith Corzine, V. R. Stefanovic, J. M. Leuthen, Fang Zheng Peng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a new voltage balancing control for the diode-clamped multilevel rectifier/inverter system. A complete analysis of the voltage balance theory for a 5-level back-to-back system is given. The analysis is based on fundamental frequency switching control and then extended to pulse-width modulation. The method involves obtaining optimal switching angles; a process which is described in detail in this paper. The proposed control strategy regulates the DC bus voltage, balances the capacitors, and decreases the harmonic components of the voltage and current. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the optimizing method and control theory.

An Extended Kalman Filter (Ekf) Approach On Fuzzy System Optimization Problem, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2003

An Extended Kalman Filter (Ekf) Approach On Fuzzy System Optimization Problem, Nian Zhang, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Optimizing the membership functions of a fuzzy system can be viewed as a system identification problem for a nonlinear dynamic system. Basically, we can view the optimization of fuzzy membership functions as a weighted least-squares minimization problem, where the error vector is the difference between the fuzzy system outputs and the target values for those outputs. The extended Kalman filter algorithm is a good choice to solve this system identification problem, not only because it is a derivative-based algorithm that is suitable to solve the weighted least-squares minimization problem, but also because of its appealing predictor-corrector feature for nonlinear system …

Capacitor Voltage Balancing In Full Binary Combination Schema Flying Capacitor Multilevel Inverters, Keith Corzine, X. Kou

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Recently, the full binary combination schema (FBCS) method has been introduced to control the flying capacitor multilevel inverter. This method has the primary advantage that the number of voltage levels can be increased for a given number of semiconductor devices when compared to the conventional control methods. However, due to the difficulty of balancing the capacitors, the new schema requires fixed floating sources to provide the DC voltages. This paper reveals an approach of balancing the capacitors, thus expanding the application fields of FBCS inverters to the family of the flying capacitor multilevel inverters under the condition of choosing a …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the application of a novel and computationally enhances genetic algorithm (GA) for solving the reactive power dispatch problem is presented. In order to attain a significant reduction in the computational time of GA, a systematic procedure of reactive power control device pre-selection mechanism is herein proposed to choose a-priori subsets of the available control devices, which maximally influence buses experiencing voltage limit violations. The GA reactive power dispatch module then accesses such judiciously pre-selected control device candidates to determine their optimal settings. A pragmatic scheme aimed at further curtailing the number of the final control actions entertained …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A strong workforce in science and engineering and literate citizens in a technology-based society depends on an educational system that prepares students in science, mathematics, and engineering. Unfortunately, many K-12 students lose interest in such topics early in their school years. Engineering applications can capture the imagination of students and illustrate the concepts in science and mathematics. Level-appropriate resources are as necessary for primary teachers and our young scholars as for teachers and students in higher grades. A model for interaction between engineers and K-4 teachers is proposed. The State of Missouri defines curriculum standards in each subject area and …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The single-chamber solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has recently received considerable attention. This type of fuel cell operates in the mixed reactant gas and therefore does not require separation of the fuel and oxidant gases. In this paper we report the anode- and electrolyte-supported configurations of the single chamber SOFC that we have studied. The system based on typical fuel cell composition has been examined: yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as an electrolyte, nickel/YSZ cermet as an anode, lanthanum strontium manganese oxide (LSM) as a cathode. The cells were prepared by tape-casting and screen-printing techniques. The cathode processing parameters have been …

An Enhanced Least-Squares Approach For Reinforcement Learning, Hailin Li, Cihan H. Dagli Jan 2003

An Enhanced Least-Squares Approach For Reinforcement Learning, Hailin Li, Cihan H. Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an enhanced least-squares approach for solving reinforcement learning control problems. Model-free least-squares policy iteration (LSPI) method has been successfully used for this learning domain. Although LSPI is a promising algorithm that uses linear approximator architecture to achieve policy optimization in the spirit of Q-learning, it faces challenging issues in terms of the selection of basis functions and training samples. Inspired by orthogonal least-squares regression (OLSR) method for selecting the centers of RBF neural network, we propose a new hybrid learning method. The suggested approach combines LSPI algorithm with OLSR strategy and uses simulation as a tool to …

Dynamics Of Bulk And Adsorbed Poly(Vinyl Acetate), Frank D. Blum, Robert D. O'Connor Jan 2003

Dynamics Of Bulk And Adsorbed Poly(Vinyl Acetate), Frank D. Blum, Robert D. O'Connor

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have recently completed a series of experiments on methyl-labeled poly(vinyl acetate)-d3, (PVAc-d3)1 and poly(methyl acrylate)-d3 (PMA-d3).234 the systems have been studied as a function of the adsorbed amount, molecular weight, and presence of a protonated overlayer. Using deuterium line shape analysis, we have found that around the glass transition temperature, the adsorbed polymers show the presence of a motional gradient. Polymer segments near the silica-polymer interface have less mobility than the bulk polymer and those near the polymer-air interface are more mobile than those of the bulk polymer. A schematic representation of the motional gradient is shown in Figure …

Life-Extending Control For A Highly Maneuverable Flight Vehicle, Si-Bok Yu Jan 2003

Life-Extending Control For A Highly Maneuverable Flight Vehicle, Si-Bok Yu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the feasibility and potential of life extension control logic for reducing fatigue within aerospace vehicle structural components. A key underpinning of this control logic is to exploit nonintuitive, optimal loading conditions which minimize nonlinear crack growth behavior, as predicted by analytical fatigue models with experimentally validated behavior. A major simplification in the development of life extension control logic is the observation and justification that optimal stress loading conditions, as described by overload magnitude ratio and application interval, are primarily independent of crack length and therefore, component age. This weak relationship between optimal stress loading and structural age …

New Approaches To Gortler And Tollmien-Schlichting Boundary-Layer Instabilities, Vijay Kalburgi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A detailed understanding of the physical processes that lead to instability and transition in the external viscous boundary layers of airfoils has been the goal of researchers for decades. This study seeks to enhance our understanding of Gortler and Tollmien-Schlichting instabilities through a critical review of prior theoretical methodology and fundamental experiments, the development of dimensionally consistent disturbance equations, and novel interpretation of the resulting flow physics revealed by their solutions to explain the process of transition.

Gortler vortices arise in boundary layers along concave surfaces due to centrifugal effects and these vortices in combination with other instabilities play an …
