A Taxonomy Of Scheduling Problems In Semiconductor Device Test Operations, Tali Freed, Robert C. Leachman, Kenneth H. Doerr Apr 2002

A Taxonomy Of Scheduling Problems In Semiconductor Device Test Operations, Tali Freed, Robert C. Leachman, Kenneth H. Doerr

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Semiconductor device test facilities differ not only by production volume and tester brands. The complexity of the devices and the characteristics of the testers affect the scheduling methodologies as well. Goals and strategies vary from one firm to another, leading to a variety of objectives and performance measures. Due to random yield lot size is variable and lot priorities are common. Changeover times are oftentimes sequence-dependent. Since semiconductor device testing systems are very costly, scheduling methods that increase the throughput of the facility are financially significant. In this paper we describe a variety of semiconductor device testing environments, develop mathematical …

Range Estimation Is Np-Hard For Epsilon-Square Accuracy And Feasible For Epsilon To The Power Of 2-Delta, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2002

Range Estimation Is Np-Hard For Epsilon-Square Accuracy And Feasible For Epsilon To The Power Of 2-Delta, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The basic problem of interval computations is: given a function f(x1,...,xn) and n intervals [xi-,xi+], find the (interval) range Y of the given function on the given intervals. It is known that even for quadratic polynomials f(x1,...,xn), this problem is NP-hard. In this paper, following the advice of A. Neumaier, we analyze the complexity of asymptotic range estimation, when the bound "epsilon" on the width of the input intervals tends to 0. We show that for small c>0, if we want to compute the range with an accuracy c times epsilon squared, then the problem is still NP-hard; on …

Computing Variance For Interval Data Is Np-Hard, Scott Ferson, Lev Ginzburg, Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre, Monica Aviles

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When we have only interval ranges [xi-,xi+] of sample values x1,...,xn, what is the interval [V-,V+] of possible values for the variance V of these values? We prove that the problem of computing the upper bound V+ is NP-hard. We provide a feasible (quadratic time) algorithm for computing the lower bound V- on the variance of interval data. We also provide a feasible algorithm that computes V+ under reasonable easily verifiable conditions.

Behavior Of Nano-Engineered Platelets In A Coronary Artery Stenosis Model, Hua Ai Apr 2002

Behavior Of Nano-Engineered Platelets In A Coronary Artery Stenosis Model, Hua Ai

Doctoral Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in North America. Cardiac infarction caused by thrombus plaque rupture can often lead to sudden death. Arterial stenosis caused by atherosclerosis is an important precursor leading to thrombus formation. Shear stress, abnormal lipid metabolism, and subendothelial layer exposure are the major contributors to arterial thrombus formation. Platelet activation by the above factors, followed by adhesion is the basic sequence in thrombus formation.

Platelets were encapsulated with nanofilm in order to reduce platelet activation and adhesion under high shear stress. Polyions, nanoparticles and immunoglobulins were assembled in nano-organized shells on fixed bovine platelets …

Modeling And Experimental Verification Of Growth Of An Axisymmetric Cylindrical Rod By Three-Dimensional Laser-Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Qing Chen Apr 2002

Modeling And Experimental Verification Of Growth Of An Axisymmetric Cylindrical Rod By Three-Dimensional Laser-Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Qing Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

Three-dimensional laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (3D-LCVD) is a recently developed micro-manufacturing process that holds great potential for the production of complex microstructures with high aspect ratio. A laser beam is focused through a vacuum chamber window onto a movable substrate. The heat from the laser at or near the focal spot on the substrate induces the decomposition reaction of precursor gas in the chamber. As a result, solid-phase reaction products are deposited on the substrate to form the microstructure. In this dissertation, a numerical model is developed for simulating kinetically-limited growth of an axisymmetric cylindrical rod by pre-specifying the surface …

Infopipes: An Abstraction For Multimedia Streaming, Andrew P. Black, Huang Jie, Rainer Koster, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Apr 2002

Infopipes: An Abstraction For Multimedia Streaming, Andrew P. Black, Huang Jie, Rainer Koster, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow – Infopipes. Infopipes make information flow primary, not an auxiliary mechanism that is hidden away. Systems are built by connecting predefined component Infopipes such as sources, sinks, buffers, filters, broadcasting pipes, and multiplexing pipes. The goal of Infopipes is not to hide communication, like an RPC system, but to reify it: to represent communication explicitly as objects that the program can interrogate and manipulate. Moreover, these objects represent communication in application-level terms, not in terms of network or process implementation.

Spectral Analysis Of Transition Metal-Doped Mgo “Matched Emitters” For Thermophotovoltaic Energy Conversion, Lucian G. Ferguson, Fatih Dogan Apr 2002

Spectral Analysis Of Transition Metal-Doped Mgo “Matched Emitters” For Thermophotovoltaic Energy Conversion, Lucian G. Ferguson, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new, thermally excited Co/Ni-doped MgO ceramic emitter for TPV energy conversion is described in this work and termed the “matched emitter” because its emissive power spectrum is very efficiently matched with the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be converted directly into electrical energy by infrared responding GaSb photovoltaic cells. Ligand Field Theory calculations are used to estimate the crystal field splitting energies at high temperatures for Co and Ni-doped MgO matched emitters. Experimental measurements of the high temperature (1300–1400◦C) emissive power spectrums for Co and Ni-doped MgO emitters are compared with predictions obtained from ligand field calculations …

Rheology Of Silica Based Inkjet Coatings And Their Filterability, Peeyush Tripathi Apr 2002

Rheology Of Silica Based Inkjet Coatings And Their Filterability, Peeyush Tripathi

Masters Theses

Coating rheology has long been understood to be a key factor in the smooth operation and performance of a coater. As coaters run faster and formulations become more complex, the demands on a coating's rheology grow more stringent.

Silica based coating formulations present unique rheological challenges, thus providing the opportunity for coating formulators to improve their performance through rheological studies under various conditions of shear. Due to rheological restrictions (gelling), silica based coatings are generally applied at 25-26% solids which is very low as compared to calcium carbonate or clay based coating, at 68-70% solids. Consequently, any improvement in coatings …

A New Long -Term Design Model For Rehabilitation Pipe Liners, Shanyun Wang Apr 2002

A New Long -Term Design Model For Rehabilitation Pipe Liners, Shanyun Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

Thin-walled plastic pipe liners are routinely used to rehabilitate structurally sound host pipes that have lost their hydraulic integrity. Such liners are often installed below the water table and are consequently subjected to external hydrostatic pressure which may lead to creep-induced radial deflections and eventual collapse of the liner within the host pipe. Most of the current liner design model is based on the extension of short-term model to a long-term buckling liner design method. The objective of this thesis is to examine and provide a correction factor C* to allow short-term liner buckling models to be more accurately used …

Synthesis Of Pmma-Ceramics Nanocomposites By Spray Process, X.-D. Zhou, H. C. Gu

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

PMMA-ceramics nanocomposites particles were synthesized by a spray process. PMMA-ZnO compositions showed a higher homogeneous than PMMA-SiO2. The surface of PMMA-SiO2 composites was SiO2 rich. Donut shape particles were formed at high gas flow rate, which was due to the competition between surface tension and dragging force. The Zeta potential dramatically changed in PMMA-ZnO composites whereas there was a slight change in PMMA-SiO2 system.
