Oxygen Plasma Effects On Optical Properties Of Znse Films, Li Yan, John A. Woollam, Eva Franke

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Zinc selenide is an infrared transparent semiconductor material being considered for use in space as an infrared optical coating. In this work, zinc selenide thin films of different thicknesses were exposed to an electron cyclotron resonance generated oxygen plasma, often used to ‘‘simulate’’ the low earth orbital environment. The maximum fluence used in our experiments was equivalent to ~16 years in the low earth orbital environment. ZnSe thin film optical constants (both before and after oxygen plasma exposure) were determined using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry from the vacuum ultraviolet at 146 nm through the middle infrared to 40 μm. A …

Proteome Database Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma., Cynthia Liang, Jason Neo, Siaw Ling Lo, Gek San Tan, Teck Keong Seow, Maxey Chung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC or hepatoma) is the most common primary cancer of the liver. Persistent viral infection by the hepatic B or C virus is probably the most important cause of HCC worldwide. It is responsible for approximately one million deaths each year, predominantly in the underdeveloped and developing countries, but its incidence is also on the rise in the developed countries. For most patients suffering from HCC, long-term survival is rare, as they are presented late and are often unsuitable for curative treatment. Thus there is great interest to identify novel HCC diagnostic markers for early detection of the …

The Rheological Behavior Of Carbon Nanofiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites, Qiang Zeng

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A rheological study of the thermoplastic HDPE filled with vapor grow carbon nanofiber (VGCNF) has been performed with a RheoStress 150 Tester. VGCNF having average 50 nm diameter were used. These nanofibers were purified to provide for an open network of high purity nanofibers. A rheomixer was used to disperse the nanofibers uniformly in the polyethylene matrix because of shear working conditions. The influence of fiber loading, frequency and temperature on the rheology was investigated. Studies were carried out in the temperature range of 160 to 210°C and frequency range of 0.062 to 628.3 rad/s. The rheological measurements show that …

Modeling The Indoor Mimo Wireless Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace May 2002

Modeling The Indoor Mimo Wireless Channel, Michael A. Jensen, Jon W. Wallace

Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates the ability of a physically based statistical multipath propagation model to match capacity statistics and pairwise magnitude and phase distributions of measured 4 x 4 and 10 x 10 narrow-band multiple-input multiple-output data (MIMO) at 2.4 GHz. The model is compared to simpler statistical models based on the multivariate complex normal distribution with either complex envelope or power correlation. The comparison is facilitated by computing channel element covariance matrices for fixed sets of multipath statistics. Multipolarization data is used to demonstrate a simple method for modeling dual-polarization arrays.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As man continues to search the unknown, additional tools are needed to develop and analyze new probes. This thesis will present a full wave Finite Difference Time Domain model that is capable of analyzing radio frequency probes immersed in realistic ionospheric plasma. The five moment approximations, Maxwell's equations and the plasma fluid equations, are discretized using a finite difference time domain method. Balmain's and Adachi theories are used to validate the simulation at the gyro and hybrid resonance points. Finally, with the model developed, the simulation is used to analyze a microstrip patch plasma impedance probe immersed in hot collisional …

Learning Nonstationary Models Of Normal Network Traffic For Detecting Novel Attacks, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney Apr 2002

Learning Nonstationary Models Of Normal Network Traffic For Detecting Novel Attacks, Philip K. Chan, Matthew V. Mahoney

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Traditional intrusion detection systems (IDS) detect attacks by comparing current behavior to signatures of known attacks. One main drawback is the inability of detecting new attacks which do not have known signatures. In this paper we propose a learning algorithm that constructs models of normal behavior from attack-free network traffic. Behavior that deviates from the learned normal model signals possible novel attacks. Our IDS is unique in two respects. First, it is nonstationary, modeling probabilities based on the time since the last event rather than on average rate. This prevents alarm floods. Second, the IDS learns protocol vocabularies (at the …

Hydrogen gas is an electron donor and nitrate is the electron acceptor in the reaction. The specific research objectives were to:

  • develop a mixed acclimated culture of hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria;
  • evaluate biodegradation kinetics of the acclimated culture;
  • evaluate hydrogen transfer characteristics of hollow fiber membrane modules;

and

  • demonstrate technical feasibility of a continuous bioreactor-membrane system for denitrification.

The following kinetic coefficients were obtained: µ …

Performance Projections For Ballistic Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Jing Guo, Mark Lundstrom, Supriyo Datta Apr 2002

Performance Projections For Ballistic Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Jing Guo, Mark Lundstrom, Supriyo Datta

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The performance limits of carbon nanotube field-effect transistors 􏰎CNTFETs􏰁 are examined theoretically by extending a one-dimensional treatment used for silicon metal – oxide – semiconductor field-effect transistors 􏰎MOSFETs􏰁. Compared to ballistic MOSFETs, ballistic CNTFETs show similar I–V characteristics but the channel conductance is quantized. For low-voltage, digital applications, the CNTFET with a planar gate geometry provides an on-current that is comparable to that expected for a ballistic MOSFET. Significantly better performance, however, could be achieved with high gate capacitance structures. Because the computed performance limits greatly exceed the performance of recently reported CNTFETs, there is considerable opportunity for progress in …

Maximum Current In Nitride-Based Heterostructure Field-Effect Transistors, A. Koudymov, H. Fatima, Grigory Simin, J. Yang, M. Asif Khan, A. Tarakji, X. Hu, M. S. Shur, R. Gaska

Faculty Publications

We present experimental and modeling results on the gate-length dependence of the maximum current that can be achieved in GaN-based heterostructurefield-effect transistors(HFETs) and metal–oxide–semiconductor HFETs (MOSHFETs). Our results show that the factor limiting the maximum current in the HFETs is the forward gate leakage current. In the MOSHFETs, the gate leakage current is suppressed and the overflow of the two dimensional electron gas into the AlGaN barrier region becomes the most important factor limiting the maximum current. Therefore, the maximum current is substantially higher in MOSHFETs than in HFETs. The measured maximum current increases with a decrease in the gate …

Description Of New Inflatable/Rigidizable Hexapod Structure Testbed For Shape And Vibration Control, Olawale Adetona, Lee Keel, Lucas Horta, Dave Cadogan, George Sapna, Steve Scarborough

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Larger and more powerful space based instruments are needed to meet increasingly sophisticated scientific demand. To support this need, concepts for telescopes with apertures of 100 meters are being investigated, but the required technologies are not in hand today. Due to the capacity limits of launch vehicles, the idea of deploying, erecting, or inflating large structures in space is being considered. Recently, rigidization concepts of large inflatable structures have demonstrated the capability of weight reductions of up to 50% from current concepts with packaging efficiencies near 80%. One of the important aspects of inflatable structures is vibration mitigation and line-of-sight …

The Fission Properties Of Curium Separated From Spent Nuclear Fuel, William Culbreth, Elizabeth Bakker, Jason Viggato Apr 2002

The Fission Properties Of Curium Separated From Spent Nuclear Fuel, William Culbreth, Elizabeth Bakker, Jason Viggato

Separations Campaign (TRP)

Curium poses special problems in the chemical preparation of spent nuclear fuel for transmutation. Once separated from the other minor actinides, the seven curium isotopes in spent fuel can lead to nuclear fission with the subsequent release of a large amount of radiation. Several isotopes of curium also generate a significant amount of heat by radioactive decay. Sustained fission can be avoided by preventing the accumulation by more that a critical mass of curium. The heat generation of curium presents even more restriction on the mass of curium that can safely be contained in one location.

To analyze the nuclear …

Influence Of Inclined Viscous Damper On Column Axial Force, Rakesh K. Goel Apr 2002

Influence Of Inclined Viscous Damper On Column Axial Force, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This investigation examined the influence of inclined viscous damper on column axial force in a simple one-story frame building for harinonic loading and earthquake ground motion. It is shown that the peak column axial force in a system with inclined damper can be several times that in a system with horizontal damper, both having the same damping ratio. The amplification factor increases with increasing ratio of the forcing frequency to the system's natural frequency for harmonic loading, and with increasing system's natural vibration period for earthquake loading; the amplification also increases with increasing damping ratio. Furthermore, the peak column axial …

Implementation Of Viterbi Decoder On Xilinx Xc4005xl Fpga, Nabil Abu-Khader Apr 2002

Implementation Of Viterbi Decoder On Xilinx Xc4005xl Fpga, Nabil Abu-Khader

Wayne State University Theses

The Viterbi decoding algorithm is used to decode convolutional codes and is found in many systems that receive digital data that might contain errors. The use of error-correcting codes has proven tobe an effective way to overcome data corruption in digital communication channels. In previous works, researchers describe the Viterbi Algorithm, but the accuracy does not exceed 10% of data points. Also, a lot of previous works do not follow IEEE 802.16 new specifications. Viterbi decoders are generally implemented using programmable digital signal processors (DSPs) or special purpose chip sets and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Here, we aim to implement …
