Fuzzy Control Of Dynamic Positioning Systems For Ships, Wen-Jer Chang, Guo-Jang Chen, Yi-Lin Yeh
Fuzzy Control Of Dynamic Positioning Systems For Ships, Wen-Jer Chang, Guo-Jang Chen, Yi-Lin Yeh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper we consider the control problem of Dynamic Positioning Systems for Ships (DPSS). It interests as a case which study in nonlinear controller design because the model exhibits nonlinear interaction in three degrees of freedom (surge, sway, and yaw) by means of main propellers aft of the ship. The DPSS system considered in this paper is modeled by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) type fuzzy model. By using linear feedback controller design technology, we design a nonlinear fuzzy controller for the T-S type fuzzy-based DPSS. Finally, simulation results show the utility of the present fuzzy control methodology.

Modeling Ship,S Routing Bounded By The Cycle Time For Marine Liner, Hua-An Lu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper addresses the problem of determining an optimal routing that bounded by the cycle time for marine liner. Through exploring the practical planning procedure of shipping company and analyzing the core of route design, this problem is realized as similar as the traveling salesman problem (TSP), but, with some specially industrial properties. A mixed integer programming model is proposed to optimize ship's routing under satisfying the relationships between the cycle time and deployed vessels with given service frequency in a week. Some constraints, besides, are organized to avoid the routing sequence has separated tours. Intuitively, we also divide the …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Quarterly Progress Report 03/16/02- 06/15/02, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the AAA proposed application. Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with very limited density. Scientists have noticed that the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the liquid alloy could control the corrosion rate of steels exposed to Pb or Pb-Bi. At high oxygen concentration, …

Fuzzy-Art Neural Networks For Predicting Chi-Chi Earthquake Induced Liquefaction In Yuan-Lin Area, S. G. Chern, R. F. Hu, Y. J. Chang, I. F. Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this study, a fuzzy adaptive network “Fuzz-ART”, based on adaptive resonance theory (ART) combined with fuzzy set theory is developed to evaluate liquefaction potentials induced by Chi-Chi earthquake in Yuan-Lin area. The proposed system combines the backpropagation algorithm for parameter learning and the fuzzy ART algorithm for structure learning. With the help of case studies, it is shown that the “Fuzz-ART” network is able to predict liquefaction potentials much more satisfactorily than conventional artificial neural network methods. If more data are collected, it may well evaluate liquefaction potentials induced by Chi-Chi earthquake.

A Stability Criterion Of Time-Delay Fuzzy Systems, Cheng-Wu Chen, Wei-Ling Chiang, Ken Yeh, Zhen-Yuan Chen, Li-Teh Lu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To guarantee the asymptotic stability, a stability criterion in terms of Lyapunov's direct method for multiple time-delay fuzzy interconnected systems is proposed in this paper. Each of these systems consists of a number of subsystems represented by TakagiSugeno fuzzy models with multiple time delays.

Drbem Analysis Of Combined Wave Refraction And Diffraction In The Oresence Of Current, Sung-Shan Hsiao, Ming-Chung Lin, Nien-Chia Hu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A more effective numerical model using the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) is presented to study the combined effects of wave refraction- diffraction and currents. The mildslope equation with current effects is reformulated to an inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation. Applying the conventional boundary element method to this inhomogeneous equation, the inhomogeneous part will result in a domain integral which makes the computation complicated and messy. To improve this drawback, the DRBEM is adopted to transform the domain integral to boundary integral. In order to verify the validity of this model, the relative amplitudes around a circular island without current effects …

An Integrated Computer-Aided System And Parts Component Repository For Shaft Design Automation, Ki-Yin Chang, Gene Eu Jan, Kevin C. M. Fan
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This research proposes an Object-Oriented Database (OODB) system that integrates computer-aided systems and parts component repository to automate a traditional propulsion shaft design for a shipyard. The software system is based on three concepts: an objectoriented graphic user interface, a parametric design, and a shared component database. Calculations of strength, alignment, vibrations, and sag & gap for the shaft design can therefore be completely integrated. All of the data produced in the CAD processes can be managed, integrated and applied in the OODB system. Furthermore, to easily integrate the systems developed at different periods of time, a Common Object Request …

Structure of complex fluid at mesoscales is influenced by interfacial effects. We describe the dynamic response in such films to sudden change in interfacial tension. In a self-assembled block copolymer film, the monolayer of 15 nm diam cylindrical discrete phases close to the surface commence to sink at an average rate of 0.16 nm/day in response to the interfacial tension change. Surprisingly, this spontaneous planarization occurs, even though the cylinders are covalently stitched to the matrix. A simple model explains the observed behavior. The observation may lead to approaches to tailor the structure of mesoscale thin films of complex fluids …

Glial tumors have demonstrated abilities to sustain growth via recruitment of glial progenitor cells (GPCs), which is believed to be driven by chemotactic cues. Previous studies have illustrated that mouse GPCs of different genetic backgrounds are able to replicate the dispersion pattern seen in the human disease. How GPCs with genetic backgrounds transformed by tumor paracrine signaling respond to extracellular cues via migration is largely unexplored, and remains a limiting factor in utilizing GPCs as therapeutic targets. In this study, we utilized a microfluidic device to examine the chemotaxis of three genetically-altered mouse GPC populations towards tumor conditioned media, as …

Estimation Of Wind Load On Structures, Soheil Saadat, Fuh-Gwo Yuan, Mohammad N. Noori, Gregory D. Buckner
Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship
Accurate spatial and temporal estimation of wind loads on structures plays an important role in the design and construction of buildings in coastal regions and open terrains. The common approach to this problem is using codes and standards obtained from wind-tunnel tests on isolated structures. The use of artificial neural networks for finding specific patterns in data obtained from wind-tunnel and field tests has been reported in the literature. In this study localized radial basis functions neural networks are proposed and successfully used for estimation of wind loads on a three-story shear building using a state-space model of the structure.

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Born about three decades ago, Kolmogorov Complexity Theory (KC) led to important discoveries that, in particular, give a new understanding of the fundamental problem: interrelations between classical continuum mathematics and reality (physics, biology, engineering sciences, ...).
Specifically, in addition to the equations, physicists use the following additional difficult-to-formalize property: that the initial conditions and the value of the parameters must not be abnormal. We will describe a natural formalization of this property, and show that this formalization in good accordance with theoretical physics. At present, this formalization has been mainly applied to the foundations of physics. However, potentially, more practical …

Materials Engineering
The effect of composition on the ternary (NbCr2–TiCr2) C15 phase properties has been investigated, focusing upon the defect structure, elastic properties, and mechanical behavior. The C15 phase field is continuous between NbCr2–TiCr2, with a maximum phase field width of at least 7 at.% solubility. The defect mechanism is governed by anti-site constitutional defects for all alloys. Mechanically, the alloys display a maximum in hardness in the center of the ternary phase field (and a minimum of toughness). The ternary phase field has features that are characteristic of solid-solution strengthening mechanisms. …

Formal Engineering Of Residential Buildings, Joseph E. Minor
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The performance of residential buildings during hurricanes is as important as the performance of other buildings. Buildings where people live and where they are likely to be when a hurricane strike must survive. If this premise is accepted, it follows that residential buildings should be afforded a degree of engineering attention that is commensurate with that given to industrial and commercial buildings. Building code authorities have not been blind to this need. In new procedures adopted for hurricane zones in the United States, common sizes and geometric shapes of timber and masonry residential buildings are formally engineered, and associated construction …
