CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (NAS 2001) has recently adopted a new web crippling approach, which is the approach contained in the Canadian S136 Standard (CSA 1994). The objective of this work was to develop new design coefficients for the web crippling strength design expression currently used in the Canadian S136 Standard (CSA 1994) and the North American Specification (NAS 2001). An extensive statistical analysis was performed using published test data up to 1999, from the United States, Canada and Australia. The resulting web crippling coefficients, calibrated resistance factors and respective factors of …

Adaptive Nonlinear Finite Element Analyses Of High Strength Steel Cladding Systems, M. Duan, Mahen Mahendran

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

In this paper, an adaptive nonlinear finite element method was developed and applied to the ultimate strength analysis of light gauge high strength steel cladding. Effect of mesh refinement on the solution accuracy was investigated for the nonlinear analysis of steel cladding systems under wind uplift loading. A comparison of numerical solutions was made with experimental results and a good agreement is shown using the adaptive finite element method. A parametric study was also conducted to investigate the factors that affect the ultimate strength behavior of high strength steel cladding systems. This paper presents the details of this study and …

Photoreflectance Spectroscopy Of Strained (In)Gaasn/Gaas Multiple Quantum Wells, J. B. Heroux, Xiaodong Yang, W. I. Wang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of a variation of the indium and nitrogen concentrations in Inᵪ Ga1-x As1-y Ny /GaAs multiquantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy is studied systematically by room temperature photoreflectance spectroscopy. The band gap redshift caused by a nitrogen fraction of 1.5% decreases by as much as 30% as the indium fraction increases from 0% to 20%. A moderate increase of electron effective mass (Δmₑ ~ 0.03m₀) is found in all samples containing nitrogen (y ≳ 1%). In compressively strained quantum wells, the energy separation between the first confined heavy and light hole energy levels decreases …

Optical Constants And Roughness Study Of Dc Magnetron Sputtered Iridium Films, Li Yan, John A. Woollam Oct 2002

Optical Constants And Roughness Study Of Dc Magnetron Sputtered Iridium Films, Li Yan, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Extremely smooth thin films of iridium have been deposited onto superpolished fused silica substrates using dc magnetron sputtering in an argon plasma. The influence of deposition process parameters on film microroughness has been investigated. In addition, film optical constants have been determined using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry, over the spectral range from vacuum ultraviolet to middle infrared (140 nm–35 μm). Because the Ir films were optically thick and the surface roughnesses were measured by atomic force microscopy then accounted for in the optical model, the as-determined film optical constants are expected to be the best available for Ir bulk metals, …

Faculty Publications

We present a study of the electrical and optical characteristics of 285 nm emission deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes(LED) at temperatures from 10 to 300 K. At low bias, our data show the tunneling carrier transport to be the dominant conduction mechanism. The room-temperature performance is shown to be limited mostly by poor electron confinement in the active region and a pronounced deep level assisted recombination but not by the hole injection into the active region. At temperatures below 100 K, the electroluminescence peak intensity increases by more than one order of magnitude indicating that with a proper device design and …

Screw Dislocation Interacting With An Interfacial Edge Crack Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Piezoelectric Wedges, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Wen-Sheng Zou Oct 2002

Screw Dislocation Interacting With An Interfacial Edge Crack Between Two Bonded Dissimilar Piezoelectric Wedges, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis, Wen-Sheng Zou

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

This letter is concerned with an interface edge crack interacting with a screw dislocation under antiplane mechanical and in-plane electric loading in a piezoelectric bimaterial wedge. In addition with a discontinuous electric potential across the slip plane, the dislocation is subjected to a line-force and a line-charge at the core. The out-of-plane displacement and electric potentials are obtained in closed-form on the basis of the conformal mapping technique and the solution for a screw dislocation in an infinite piezoelectric bimaterial with a semi-infinite interface crack. The intensity factors (IFs) and energy release rate (ERR) are obtained explicitly.

Virtual Surfaces, Director Domains And The Freedericksz Transition In Polymer Stabilized Nematic Liquid Crystals, Pavel A. Kossyrev, Jun Qi, Nikolai V. Priezjev, Robert A. Pelcovits, Gregory P. Crawford

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The critical field of the Freedericksz transition and switching dynamics are investigated for polymer stabilized nematic liquid crystals as a function of polymer concentration. A simple phenomenological model is proposed to describe the observed critical field and dynamic response time behaviors as a function of concentration. In this model the polymer fibrils form director domains, which are bounded by virtual surfaces with a finite anchoring energy. The Freedericksz transition occurs independently within each of these domains.

Learning Implicit User Interest Hierarchy For Context In Personalization, Philip K. Chan, Hyoung-Rae Kim Oct 2002

Learning Implicit User Interest Hierarchy For Context In Personalization, Philip K. Chan, Hyoung-Rae Kim

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

To provide a more robust context for personalization, we desire to extract a continuum of general (long-term) to specific (short-term) interests of a user. Our proposed approach is to learn a user interest hierarchy (UIH) from a set of web pages visited by a user. We devise a divisive hierarchical clustering (DHC) algorithm to group words (topics) into a hierarchy where more general interests are represented by a larger set of words. Each web page can then be assigned to nodes in the hierarchy for further processing in learning and predicting interests. This approach is analogous to building a subject …

Multiscale Nature Of Hysteretic Phenomena: Application To Copt-Type Magnets, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov Oct 2002

Multiscale Nature Of Hysteretic Phenomena: Application To Copt-Type Magnets, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

We suggest a workable approach for the description of multiscale magnetization reversal phenomena in nanoscale magnets and apply it to CoPt-type alloys. We show that their hysteretic properties are governed by two effects originating at different length scales: a peculiar splitting of domain walls at twin boundaries and their strong pinning at antiphase boundaries. We emphasize that such multiscale nature of hysteretic phenomena is a generic feature of nanoscale magnetic materials.

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Since it’s founding in 1865, the faculty, students, and alumni of Worcester Polytechnic Institute have been responsible for the establishment of nearly all the manufacturing industry in the region. Beginning with the Norton Company, a world-wide abrasives manufacturer now owned by Saint Gobain, to recent biotechnology companies, they have combined confidence, innovation, and resourcefulness to continuously accomplish what is now referred to as technology transfer to form start-up companies. By following the historical development of these firms, we seek to determine some of the traits and environmental factors that have fostered the continual entrepreneurial success of the founders.

Universal Approximation Theorem For Uninorm-Based Fuzzy Systems Modeling, Ronald R. Yager, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2002

Universal Approximation Theorem For Uninorm-Based Fuzzy Systems Modeling, Ronald R. Yager, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Most existing universal approximation results for fuzzy systems are based on the assumption that we use t-conorms and t-conorms to represent "and" and "or". Yager has proposed to use, within the fuzzy system modeling paradigm, more general operations based on uninorms. In this paper, we show that the universal approximation property holds for an arbitrary choice of a uninorm.

Absolute Bounds On The Mean Of Sum, Product, Max, And Min: A Probabilistic Extension Of Interval Arithmetic, Scott Ferson, Lev Ginzburg, Vladik Kreinovich, Jorge Lopez

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We extend the main formulas of interval arithmetic for different arithmetic operations x1*x2 to the case when, for each input xi, in addition to the interval [xi]=[xi-,xi+] of possible values, we also know its mean Ei (or an interval [Ei] of possible values of the mean), and we want to find the corresponding bounds for x1*x2 and its mean.

Research On Advanced Soft Computing And Its Applications (Introduction To The Special Issue), Vilem Novak, Irina Perfilieva, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The main objective for the research presented in this special issue is to advance theoretical basis in soft computing, for the purpose of improving applications.

Why is this theoretical research needed? Because soft computing in general (and intelligent control and decision making in particular) are, in many aspects, still an art. To make this methodology easier to apply, we must use the experience of successful applications of fuzzy control, decision making or classification and extract formal rules that would capture this experience. To be able to do that efficiently, we must understand why some versions of soft computing methodology turned …

Some Observed Queue Discharge Features At A Freeway Bottleneck Downstream Of A Merge, Robert L. Bertini, Michael J. Cassidy Oct 2002

Some Observed Queue Discharge Features At A Freeway Bottleneck Downstream Of A Merge, Robert L. Bertini, Michael J. Cassidy

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Details of traffic evolution were studied upstream and downstream of a freeway bottleneck located near a busy on-ramp. It is shown that on certain days the bottleneck became active upon dissipation of a queue emanating from somewhere further downstream. On such occasions, the bottleneck occurred at a fixed location, approximately one kilometer downstream of the merge. Notably, even after the dissipation of a downstream queue, the discharge flows in the active bottleneck were nearly constant, since the cumulative counts never deviated much from a linear trend. The average bottleneck discharge flows were also reproducible from day to day. The diagnostic …

State-Of-The-Art Report On Systems Analysis Methods For Resolution Of Conflicts In Water Resources Management, K. D. W. Nandalal, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

Water is an important factor in conflicts among stakeholders at the local, regional, and even international level. Water conflicts have taken many forms, but they almost always arise from the fact that the freshwater resources of the world are not partitioned to match the political borders, nor are they evenly distributed in space and time. Two or more countries share the watersheds of 261 major rivers and nearly half of the land area of the wo rld is in international river basins. Water has been used as a military and political goal. Water has been a weapon of war. Water …

An Idl/Envi Implementation Of The Fft Based Algorithm For Automatic Image Registration, Hongjie Xie, Nigel Hicks, George R. Keller, Haitao Huang, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Georeferencing images is a laborious process so schemes for automating this process have been under investigation for some time. Among the most promising automatic registration algorithms aare those based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The displacement between the two given images can be computed by computing the ratio F1*conj(F2)/|F1*F2|, and then applying the inverse Fourier transform. The result is an impulse-like function, which is approximately zero everywhere except at the displacement that is necessary to optimally register the images. Coverting from rectangular coordinates to log-polar coordinates, shifts representing rotation and scaling can be also determined to complete the georectification process. …

A Lessons Learned Repository For Computer Forensics, Warren Harrison, George Heuston, Mark Morrissey, David Aucsmith, Sarah Mocas, Steve Russelle

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Law Enforcement community possesses a large, but informal, community memory with respect to digital forensics. Large, because the experiences of every forensics technician and investigator contribute to the whole. Informal because there is seldom an explicit mechanism for disseminating this wisdom except “over the water cooler”. As a consequence, the same problems and mistakes continue to resurface and the same solutions are re-invented. In order to better exploit this informal collection of wisdom, the key points of each experience can be placed into a Repository for later dissemination. We describe a web-based Lessons Learned Repository (LLR) that facilitates contribution …
