Magnetic Order In Yba2⁢Cu3⁢O6+X Superconductors, Herbert A. Mook, Pengcheng Dai, Stephen M. Hayden, Arno Hiess, Jw Lynn, S-H Lee, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction has been used to search for magnetic order in YBa2⁢Cu3⁢O6+x superconductors. Most of the measurements were made on a high-quality crystal of YBa2⁢Cu3⁢O6.6. It is shown that this crystal has highly ordered ortho-II chain order, and a sharp superconducting transition. Inelastic scattering measurements display a very clean spin-gap and pseudo gap with any intensity at 10 meV being 50 times smaller than the resonance intensity. The crystal shows a complicated magnetic order that appears to have three components. A magnetic phase is found at …

Distributions Of Nobel Metal Pd And Pt In Mesoporous Silica, J. Arbiol, A. Cabot, J. R. Morante, Fanglin Chen, Meilin Liu

Faculty Publications

Mesoporous silicananostructures have been synthesized and loaded with Pd and Pt catalytic noble metals. It is found that Pd forms small nanoclusters (3–5 nm) on the surface of the mesoporous structure whereas Pt impregnation results in the inclusion of Pt nanostructures within the silica hexagonal pores (from nanoclusters to nanowires). It is observed that these materials have high catalyticproperties for CO–CH4CO–CH4CO–CH4 combustion, even in a thick film form. In particular, results indicate that the Pt and Pd dispersed in mesoporous silica are catalytically active as a selective filter for gas sensors.

Long Range Experimental Hydrologic Forecasting For The Eastern U.S., Andrew W. Wood, Edwin P. Maurer, Arun Kumar, Dennis P. Lettenmaier

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

We explore a strategy for long-range hydrologic forecasting that uses ensemble climate model forecasts as input to a macroscale hydrologic model to produce runoff and streamflow forecasts at spatial and temporal scales appropriate for water management. Monthly ensemble climate model forecasts produced by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/Climate Prediction Center global spectral model (GSM) are bias corrected, downscaled to 1/8° horizontal resolution, and disaggregated to a daily time step for input to the Variable Infiltration Capacity hydrologic model. Bias correction is effected by evaluating the GSM ensemble forecast variables as percentiles relative to the GSM model climatology and then …

Compressive Properties Of Zone-Directionally Solidified Β-Nial And Its Off-Eutectic Alloys With Chromium And Tungsten, R. Asthana, R. Tiwari, Surendra N. Tewari Oct 2002

Compressive Properties Of Zone-Directionally Solidified Β-Nial And Its Off-Eutectic Alloys With Chromium And Tungsten, R. Asthana, R. Tiwari, Surendra N. Tewari

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The ordered intermetallic compound β-NiAl and its pseudo-binary off-eutectic alloys with 1 at.% tungsten and 9.7 at.% chromium were directionally solidified (DS) in the ‘floating-zone’ mode, and tested for compressive strength and fracture behavior in the temperature range 300–800 K. The dual-phase structures created by the DS of ternary NiAl alloys led to improvements in both the compressive strength and the ductility. The room-temperature (300 K) 0.2% compressive yield strength (CYS) of DS NiAl(W) (623 MPa) is larger than the CYS of DS NiAl(Cr) (565 MPa) and DS NiAl (435 MPa). The CYS of the three alloys dropped …

The Impact Of Variations In Membrane Capacitance On The Detected Neural-Electronic Signal, Robert B. Szlavik Oct 2002

The Impact Of Variations In Membrane Capacitance On The Detected Neural-Electronic Signal, Robert B. Szlavik

Biomedical Engineering

There have been various theoretical and experimental studies presented in the literature that focus on interfacing neurons with discrete electronic devices such as transistors. The demonstrated lack of reproducible fidelity of the nerve cell action potential at the device junction would make it impractical to implement these devices in any neural prosthetic application where reliable detection of the action potential was a pre-requisite. In this study, the impact of typical variations in membrane capacitance on the detected neural signal is investigated.

We report homoepitaxialGaNgrowth on freestanding (11̄00) oriented (M-plane GaN) substrates using low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition.Scanning electron microscopy,atomic-force microscopy, and photoluminescence were used to study the influence of growth conditions such as the V/III molar ratio and temperature on the surface morphology and optical properties of the epilayers. Optimized growth conditions led to high quality (11̄00) oriented GaN epilayers with a smooth surface morphology and strong band-edge emission. These layers also exhibited strong room temperature stimulated emission under high intensity pulsed optical pumping. Since for III-N materials the (11̄00) crystal orientation is free from piezoelectric or spontaneous polarization electric fields, …

Structural Behaviour Of Self-Piercing Riveted Connections In Steel Framed Housing, Stephen Moss, Mahen Mahendran Oct 2002

Structural Behaviour Of Self-Piercing Riveted Connections In Steel Framed Housing, Stephen Moss, Mahen Mahendran

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Self-piercing riveting involves the joining of two or more plates by using a rivet to pierce and clinch in a single operation. There is a distinct lack of information regarding the use of self-piercing riveted connections in cold-formed steel frames. Experimental research is being undertaken to investigate the structural behaviour of self-piercing riveted connections used in steel framed housing. To date, testing has been carried out on 0.75 mm to 1.15 mm G300 steels to determine the primary failure modes for self-piercing riveted connections and also to assess the applicability of standard single point lap shear tests to actual house …

Seismic Performance Of Wall-Stud Shear Walls, Ludovic A. Fulop, Dan Dubina Oct 2002

Seismic Performance Of Wall-Stud Shear Walls, Ludovic A. Fulop, Dan Dubina

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The ever-increasing need for housing generated the search for new and innovative building methods to increase speed, efficiency and enhance quality, one direction being the use of light steel profiles as load bearing elements and different materials for cladding. Wind and seismic behavior of these structures is influenced by the hysteretic characteristics of the shear wall panels. In this paper a review of actual research in the field and results of a full-scale shear test program on wall panels are presented. Based on tests, a numerical equivalent model for hysteretic behavior of wall panels working in shear was built to …

Stiffened Elements With Multiple Intermediate Stiffeners And Edge Stiffened Elements With Intermediate Stiffeners, Benjamin W. Schafer Oct 2002

Stiffened Elements With Multiple Intermediate Stiffeners And Edge Stiffened Elements With Intermediate Stiffeners, Benjamin W. Schafer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Section B5 of the AISI Specification, covering stiffened elements with multiple intermediate stiffeners and edge stiffened elements with intermediate stiffeners, has been entirely replaced in the latest edition of the Cold-Formed Steel Specification (NAS 2001). The new design rules are based primarily on the work of Schafer and Pekoz (1998); however, subsequent to that work and prior to adoption by AISI, additional work was also completed. For elements with multiple intermediate stiffeners consideration of weblflange interaction was added. The resulting expressions are shown to agree well with both experimental and numerical data. New provisions for edge stiffened elements with intermediate …

Gbt-Based Distortional Buckling Formulae For Thin-Walled Channel Columns And Beams, Nuno Silvestre, Dinar Camotim Oct 2002

Gbt-Based Distortional Buckling Formulae For Thin-Walled Channel Columns And Beams, Nuno Silvestre, Dinar Camotim

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

After a brief outline of the Generalized Beam Theory (GBT) fundamentals and linear stability analysis procedure, the main concepts and steps involved in the derivation of GBT -based fully analytical formulae are described and discussed. Such formulae provide distortional bifurcation stress estimates in cold-formed steel channel columns and beams with arbitrary sloping single-lip edge stiffeners and pinned/free-to-warp or fixed/warping-free end sections. The application of the proposed formulae is illustrated in detail and, in order to assess their accuracy and validity, results concerning several specific channel columns and beams are presented. In particular, the GBT-based analytical estimates are compared with exact …

Structural Behavior Of Bolted Connections In Cold-Formed Steel Members, Emphasizing The Shear Lag Effect, Carlos Henrique Maiola, Maximiliano Malite, Jorge Munaiar Neto, Roberto Martins Goncalves

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Light-gage steel structures constituted mainly of cold-formed steel members have been widely employed in a variety metal construction in Brazil and many countries. The reduced thicknesses this elements making connection designing difficult due the occurrence of the local effects that generally govern these designs in thin elements. This paper presents and discusses the results of a experimental investigation of bolted connections in cold-formed angles (either equal or unequal legs) and channel members (1.55 to 3.75mm thickness), and an evaluation of the structural behavior of the connections with identification of the corresponding failure modes, with emphasis on the tensile capacity of …

Testing Of Bolted Cold-Formed Steel Connections In Bearing (With And Without Washers), J. A. Wallace, R. M. Schuster Oct 2002

Testing Of Bolted Cold-Formed Steel Connections In Bearing (With And Without Washers), J. A. Wallace, R. M. Schuster

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Presently there are two cold-formed steel structural design documents in North America, i.e., in the USA, the Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI 1996) and in Canada, the Standard for Cold-formed Steel Structural Members, published by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA 1994). The bearing strength of bolted connections is treated differently in these two design documents. The North American Specification for the Design of Cold-formed Steel Structural Members (NAS 2001) contains a new approach for bearing of bolted connections. This approach is similar to the current S136 Standard …

Ultimate Failure Behaviour Of Second-Generation Sheeting Subjected To Combined Bending Moment And Concentrated Load, M. Kaspers, H. H. Snijder, Monique Bakker, H. Hofmeyer Oct 2002

Ultimate Failure Behaviour Of Second-Generation Sheeting Subjected To Combined Bending Moment And Concentrated Load, M. Kaspers, H. H. Snijder, Monique Bakker, H. Hofmeyer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Second-generation sheeting is widely used for cladding and roof construction. At interior supports, it is subjected to combined bending moment and concentrated load. Unfortunately, design rules for this loading are complicated and do not provide insight in the sheeting's failure behaviour. This means there is a need for a new, insight providing design rule. For first-generation sheeting, a similar problem did exist. The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TUE) carried out three research projects [Bakk92a,Vaes95a,Hofm00a] that provided insight in the first-generation sheeting behaviour and resulted in a new, insight providing design rule. The TUE now uses the strategy of these three research …

Behaviour Of Cold-Formed Thin-Walled Steel Short Columns With Service Holes At Elevated Temperatures, M. Feng, Y. C. Wang, J. Michael Davies Oct 2002

Behaviour Of Cold-Formed Thin-Walled Steel Short Columns With Service Holes At Elevated Temperatures, M. Feng, Y. C. Wang, J. Michael Davies

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the axial strength of cold-formed thin-walled lipped channel sections with service holes under ambient and uniform high temperature conditions. Short columns of two different thickness with service holes under different temperatures have been tested, and analysed by using a variety of design methods and a commercial finite element program ABAQUS (1998). Three design methods (the British Standard BS5950 Part 5 (1987), Eurocode 3 Part 1.3 (CEN 1996) and the American Specification AISI (1996)) have been used in this paper. In the finite element analysis, both geometrical and material …

Experimental Investigation Of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Rhs Columns, Ben Young, Yahua Liu Oct 2002

Experimental Investigation Of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Rhs Columns, Ben Young, Yahua Liu

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The paper describes an experimental investigation into the column strengths of cold-formed stainless steel rectangular hollow sections (RHS). A series of tests consisting of four cross-section sizes was compressed between fixed ends. The tests were performed over a range of column lengths, such that column curves were obtained for each series of tests. The failure modes of the columns involved local buckling, overall flexural buckling and interaction of local and overall buckling. The test strengths are compared with the design strengths predicted using the American, Australian/New Zealand and European specifications for cold-formed stainless steel structures. The design strengths were calculated …

Local Buckling Tests On Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer Oct 2002

Local Buckling Tests On Cold-Formed Steel Beams, Cheng Yu, Benjamin W. Schafer

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

C- and Z-sections are two of the most common cold-formed steel shapes in use today. Accurate prediction of the bending performance of these sections is important for reliable and efficient cold-formed steel structures. Recent analytical work has highlighted discontinuities and inconsistencies in the AISI (1996) design provisions for stiffened elements under a stress gradient (i.e., the web of C- or Z-sections). New methods have been proposed for design, and an interim method has been adopted in the NAS (North American Specification 2001). However, existing tests on Cs and Zs do not provide a definitive evaluation of the design expressions, due …

Bending And Web Crippling Interaction Of Cold-Formed Steel Members, Roger A. Laboube, J. A. Wallace, R. M. Schuster Oct 2002

Bending And Web Crippling Interaction Of Cold-Formed Steel Members, Roger A. Laboube, J. A. Wallace, R. M. Schuster

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The North American Specification has recently adopted a new web crippling approach for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (NAS, 2001). This approach is similar to what is currently in the Canadian S136 Standard (CSA, 1994). The current web crippling and bending interaction equations for single-web sections in the North American Specification (NAS 2001) are based on the previous web crippling methods that are contained in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specification (AISI, 1996). As well, the moment component of the interaction equations was based on the previous reduced web strength method instead of the stress gradient …

Web Crippling And Combined Bending And Web Crippling Of Cold-Formed Steel Box-Beam Headers, Sutton F. Stephens, Roger A. Laboube Oct 2002

Web Crippling And Combined Bending And Web Crippling Of Cold-Formed Steel Box-Beam Headers, Sutton F. Stephens, Roger A. Laboube

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Box-beam headers are commonly used in walls framed with cold-formed steel studs to span openings in bearing walls. Based on the results of previous experimental studies, it has been shown that box-beam headers subjected to interior one flange (IOF) loading have been conservatively designed. This paper presents the results of an ongoing experimental study conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla to establish the web crippling strength of box-beam headers for an IOF loading condition. Box-beam header specimens were tested as a system consisting of two C-sections together with top and bottom track sections. The header configuration used in this study …

Design Of Industrial Storage Racks, Andrew T. Sarawit, Teoman Pekoz Oct 2002

Design Of Industrial Storage Racks, Andrew T. Sarawit, Teoman Pekoz

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

Design of industrial steel storage racks is complex due to the presence of significant perforations in the columns and the semi-rigid nature of column bases and beam to column connections. Many assumptions are made in the current design provisions to simplify the design but as a result the design becomes rather conservative. Studies were conducted at both the component and global scale to address some of these assumptions. At the component level, the topics focused upon are the column bases, beam to column connections, and members. Results indicate that improvements in the current design procedures are possible and recommendations for …

A Study On The Flexural Strength Capacity Of Wall Stud Assembly, Jun-Yeup Song, Hyun Suk Chung, Gap Deuk Kim, Young Bonb Kwon Oct 2002

A Study On The Flexural Strength Capacity Of Wall Stud Assembly, Jun-Yeup Song, Hyun Suk Chung, Gap Deuk Kim, Young Bonb Kwon

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

An investigation on the ultimate and service load capacity of cold-formed steel lipped C-section studs for the wall system is presented. An experimental research has been carried out to study the structural behavior of stud assembly subjected to lateral loads. Each test specimen consisted of three or four lipped C-section studs and two C-section tracks which restrain both ends of wall studs from rotation. The effects of main parameters, such as perforation on the web, space of bridge channel and special clip to fix the bridge channel and to sustain the distance between lips, were studied in the experimental work. …

Axial Strength Of Purlins Attached To Standing Seam Roof Panels, John A. Stolarczyk, James M. Fisher, Al Ghorbanpoor Oct 2002

Axial Strength Of Purlins Attached To Standing Seam Roof Panels, John A. Stolarczyk, James M. Fisher, Al Ghorbanpoor

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The purpose of this research was to determine the axial load capacity of Z-purlins with one flange attached to a standing seam roof system. The axial load capacity was determined by developing a relationship between the flexural uplift buckling strength and the axial buckling strength in the Z-purlin. This relationship was investigated using finite element models and by conducting a parametric study. At the conclusion of the parametric study, confirmatory tests were conducted to verify the finite element results. A relationship has been provided that relates the axial buckling strength in the Z-purlin to the flexural uplift buckling strength. This …

Experimental Analysis Of Cold-Formed Steel Channel And Lipped-Channel Profiles Connected To Roof Panel - R-Factor Analysis, Maximiliano Malite, Carlos Eduardo Javaroni, Roberto Martins Goncalves Oct 2002

Experimental Analysis Of Cold-Formed Steel Channel And Lipped-Channel Profiles Connected To Roof Panel - R-Factor Analysis, Maximiliano Malite, Carlos Eduardo Javaroni, Roberto Martins Goncalves

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper presents and discusses test results of simulated suction effect due wind action on purlin-channel and lipped-channel sections carried out in a "vacuum box". The chosen profile sections and their dimensions are those frequently used in steel construction in Brazil. The experimental results and the failure mode analysis of the purlin behaviour subjected to suction effect were compared with the theoretical analysis and R-factor for all load steps. The tests were carried out in a " vacuum box" with plan dimensions of 4 m x 6 m, where the suction effect due to wind was simulated. The air contained …

On The Computation Of The Cross-Section Properties Of Arbitrary Thin-Walled Structures, Chunting Xiang, Paul A. Seaburg, Robert Crain, Albert C. J. Lou Oct 2002

On The Computation Of The Cross-Section Properties Of Arbitrary Thin-Walled Structures, Chunting Xiang, Paul A. Seaburg, Robert Crain, Albert C. J. Lou

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

In this paper, a generalized computational algorithm based on the line chain and tree models is developed for the cross section properties of arbitrarily configuration struts without closed loops. The two C++ programs for such models are developed. However, the two models cannot apply to struts with any cross-section possessing closed loops. Therefore, the further investigation should be completed.

Progress On The Direct Strength Method, Benjamin W. Schager Oct 2002

Progress On The Direct Strength Method, Benjamin W. Schager

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

The Direct Strength method is a new design procedure for cold-formed steel members. The method employs elastic buckling solutions for the cross-section, instead of the element-by-element plate buckling solutions used in traditional design. The use of cross-section elastic buckling solutions insures inter-element compatibility and equilibrium. The Direct Strength method uses strength formulas on the gross section, similar to conventional column curves, for capacity prediction in local and distortional buckling. This avoids effective section calculations altogether. The reliability of the Direct Strength method is demonstrated for a broad selection of beams and columns by comparison with existing test data. Extension of …

Compression Tests Of Cold-Reduced High Strength Steel Long Columns, Demao Yang, Gregory J. Hancock, Kim J. R. Rasmussen Oct 2002

Compression Tests Of Cold-Reduced High Strength Steel Long Columns, Demao Yang, Gregory J. Hancock, Kim J. R. Rasmussen

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper describes a series of compression tests performed on long columns fabricated from cold-formed high strength steel plates with nominal yield stress of 550 MPa (80 ksi). The steel is classified as G550 to Australia Standard AS1397. The test results presented in this paper are the second stage of an Australian Research Council research project entitled "Compression Stability of High Strength Steel Sections with Low Strain-Hardening". A total of 28 long columns, which were made from two thicknesses of sheet steel (0.42 mm and 0.6 mm) (0.017 in. and 0.024 in.), were tested. A box shaped section was tested …

The Design Of The Pallet Program, R. G. Beale, M. H. R. Godley Oct 2002

The Design Of The Pallet Program, R. G. Beale, M. H. R. Godley

CCFSS Proceedings of International Specialty Conference on Cold-Formed Steel Structures (1971 - 2018)

This paper describes the procedures underlying the development of the Pallet program which has been produced to design regular pallet racks according to the FEM code. The program determines the buckling load of the equivalent free sway structure and, using stability functions, calculates the axial and shear forces and the bending moments within the structure including the non-linear P - Δ effects. Twelve different combinations of load are analysed and design checks given in the FEM code applied. The paper discusses the different modes of operation of the program. Finally the accuracy of the program is discussed together with future …
