A New Filtering Technique For A Class Of Nonlinear Systems, Ming Xin, S. N. Balakrishnan
A New Filtering Technique For A Class Of Nonlinear Systems, Ming Xin, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a new nonlinear filtering technique (θ-D filter) is presented. This filter is derived by constructing the dual of a new nonlinear regulator control technique, θ-D approximation which involves approximate solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. The structure of this filter is similar to the state dependent riccati equation filter (SDREF). However, this method does not need time-consuming online computation of the algebraic Riccati equation at each sample time compared with the SDREF. By manipulating the perturbation terms both the asymptotic stability and optimality properties can be obtained. A simple pendulum problem is investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness of …
State-Constrained Agile Missile Control With Adaptive-Critic-Based Neural Networks, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan
State-Constrained Agile Missile Control With Adaptive-Critic-Based Neural Networks, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this study, we develop an adaptive-critic-based controller to steer an agile missile that has a constraint on the minimum flight Mach number from various initial Mach numbers to a given final Mach number in minimum time while completely reversing its flightpath angle. This class of bounded state space, free final time problems is very difficult to solve due to discontinuities in costates at the constraint boundaries. We use a two-neural-network structure called "adaptive critic" in this study to carry out the optimization process. This structure obtains an optimal controller through solving optimal control-related equations resulting from a Hamiltonian formulation. …
Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Based Feedback Optimal Control Synthesis Of Distributed Parameter Systems Using Neural Networks, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan
Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Based Feedback Optimal Control Synthesis Of Distributed Parameter Systems Using Neural Networks, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new method for optimal control design of distributed parameter systems is presented in this paper. The concept of proper orthogonal decomposition is used for the model reduction of distributed parameter systems to form a reduced order lumped parameter problem. The optimal control problem is then solved in the time domain, in a state feedback sense, following the philosophy of ''adaptive critic'' neural networks. The control solution is then mapped back to the spatial domain using the same basis functions. Numerical simulation results are presented for a linear and nonlinear one-dimensional heat equation problem in an infinite time regulator framework.
Graphite Platelet Nanostructures, Marian Mazurkiewicz
Graphite Platelet Nanostructures, Marian Mazurkiewicz
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Separated graphite nanostructures are formed of thin graphite platelets having an aspect ratio of at least 1,500:1. The platelets have an angular geometric structure and may be fully independent from an original graphite particle, or partially attached to the particle. The graphite platelets have an average thickness in the range of 1-100 nm. The graphite nanostructures are created from synthetic or natural graphite using a high-pressure mill. Fluid jets of the high-pressure flaking mill cause fluid to enter the tip of cracks in the graphite particles, which creates tension at the tip. This tension causes the cracks to propagate along …
Distributed Power Control In Wireless Communication Systems, Sarangapani Jagannathan, A. T. Chronopoulos, S. Ponipireddy
Distributed Power Control In Wireless Communication Systems, Sarangapani Jagannathan, A. T. Chronopoulos, S. Ponipireddy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Energy efficiency is a measure of performance in wireless networks. Therefore, controlling the transmitter power at a given node increases not only battery operating life, but also overall system capacity by successfully admitting new links. It is essential to find effective means of power control in point-to-point, broadcasting and multicasting scenarios. Wireless networking presents formidable challenges, and we consider the problem of unicast or point-to-point (peer-to-peer) communication in wireless networks in the presence of other nodes. We study the feasibility of admitting new links in an wireless network operating area while maintaining quality of service (QoS), in terms of signal-to-interference …

Study Of Relative Effectiveness Of Features In Content-Based Image Retrieval, S. R. Subramanya, Jui Che Teng, Yongjian Fu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Content-based retrieval in image databases requires appropriate features of images to be derived and used in the indexing and searching process. Fast and accurate retrieval is crucial from a user point of view. The kinds of features used, their organization in suitable data structures, and the similarity search scheme, directly affect the speed and quality of content-based retrieval. In this paper, we evaluate the relative significance of three different image features - geometry, moments, and Fourier descriptors in the context of content-based retrieval, and present experimental results. The evaluation metrics are retrieval quality and search time. These could be used …
A Hybrid System Theoretic Approach For Admission Controller Design In Multimedia Networks, Sarangapani Jagannathan
A Hybrid System Theoretic Approach For Admission Controller Design In Multimedia Networks, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel real-time discrete-event admission control (AC) scheme for high-speed networks is proposed with the aim of attaining a desired quality of service (QoS) and high network utilization. The AC uses the available capacity from a novel adaptive bandwidth estimation scheme, a congestion indicator derived from a congestion controller, peak bit/cell rate (PBR/PCR) estimate from new sources, along with the desired QoS metrics, and makes decisions whether to 'admit' or 'reject' new sources. The novel aspect of the proposed approach is the application of hybrid system theory to prove the performance of the admission controller, stability and the development of …
Modelling Of The Glass Phase In Fly Ashes Using Network Connectivity Theory, Mark R. Towler, Kenneth T. Stanton, Patrick Mooney, Robert G. Hill, Natalia Moreno, Xavier Querol
Modelling Of The Glass Phase In Fly Ashes Using Network Connectivity Theory, Mark R. Towler, Kenneth T. Stanton, Patrick Mooney, Robert G. Hill, Natalia Moreno, Xavier Querol
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The amorphous phase of fly ash dominates degradation behaviour because glass has a higher potential energy than the equivalent crystal structure and the variation of bond angles and distances in a glass make the bond breakage easier. It would be advantageous to predict the presence and subsequent degradability of glass on the basis of the solid-state chemistry of the fly ash. To this end, and inorganic polymer model was applied to a selection of European fly ashes to determine the value known as cross-link density (CLD). A cross-link density value of less than two implies that the material is amorphous …
Radionuclide Leaching From Residual Soils: Screening Study, Mark W. Fitch, Ellen England
Radionuclide Leaching From Residual Soils: Screening Study, Mark W. Fitch, Ellen England
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Four soil samples, collected from a National Priorities Listed site contaminated with uranium, thorium, and radium, were leached for two, seven, and 30 days. The nonleached soils, leached soils, and leachates were analyzed using gamma spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, and delayed neutron activation. Unleached and leached soils had low radionuclide activities, and four different leaching solutions had no significant observable effect upon the resulting leachate activity. Three of the soils produced leachates with uranium activities below the expected primary drinking water standard of 30 µg/L for uranium, but the leachate from the fourth soil had an unacceptably high concentration of uranium …

Thermogravimetric Studies Of Pmma On Silica, Bing Zhang, Frank D. Blum
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The thermal degradation of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been studied extensively. It is well accepted that the degradation process is a radical chain reaction involving initiation, depropagation, transfer, and termination reactions. In the degradation process, the factors having observable effects on the decomposition behavior include molecular mass, polydispersity, tacticity, and sample dimensions. The effects of tacticity on the degradation behavior of PMMA were investigated by Kashiwagi et al., Jellinek et al. And Chiamtore et al. The results indicated that both isotactic and syndiotactic PMMA have similar decomposition pathways and activation energies. Isotactic PMMA will decompose at a slightly lower temperature …

Effect Of Polymer-Surface Mobility On Adhesion In Poly(Methyl Methacrylate)-Tape System, Bhavesh C. Gandhi, Frank D. Blum, Lokeswarappa R. Dharani
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The interaction between two polymer layers, especially adhesion between them, plays an important role in polymer processing and other applications. Detailed knowledge of the molecular structure and dynamics of polymer interfaces, and how they relate to macroscopic mechanical properties, should help designers construct more functional systems. Unfortunately, there have been few studies where both molecular and macroscopic studies have been performed on similar systems. In previous studies from our group, we have probed the dynamics of poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) and thermal behavior of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on silica. These studies helped us paint a picture for strongly bound molecules on …
A Quantitative Similarity Metric For Design-By-Analogy, Daniel A. Mcadams, Kristin L. Wood
A Quantitative Similarity Metric For Design-By-Analogy, Daniel A. Mcadams, Kristin L. Wood
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
During the design and development of new products, design engineers use many techniques to generate and define new and "good" concepts. Inherent in this search for solutions is the conscious and unconscious reliance on prior experience and knowledge, or design-by-analogy. In this paper, a quantitative metric for design-by-analogy is developed. This metric is based on the functional similarity of products. By using this product-similarity metric, designers are able to formalize and quantify design-by-analogy techniques during concept and layout design. The methods, as developed in this paper, allow a designer with limited experience to develop sophisticated solutions that enhance the overall …

In engineering design, all products and artifacts have some intended reason behind their existence: the product or artifact function. Functional modeling provides an abstract, yet direct, method for understanding and representing an overall product or artifact function. Functional modeling also strategically guides design activities such as problem decomposition, physical modeling, product architecting, concept generation, and team organization. A formal function representation is needed to support functional modeling, and a standardized set of function-related terminology leads to repeatable and meaningful results from such a representation. We refer to this representation as a functional basis; in this paper, we seek to reconcile …

Comparison Of Mlp And Rbf Neural Networks Using Deviation Signals For On-Line Identification Of A Synchronous Generator, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper compares the performances of a multilayer perceptron network (MLPN) and a radial basis function network (RBFN) for the online identification of the nonlinear dynamics of a synchronous generator. Deviations of signals from their steady state values are used. The computational complexity required to process the data for online training, generalization and online global minimum testing are investigated by time-domain simulations. The simulation results show that, compared to the MLPN, the RBFN is simpler to implement, needs less computational memory, converges faster and global minimum convergence is achieved even when operating conditions change.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Polycrystalline Si films, 0.5-mm thick, were obtained as a result of metal-induced growth by sputtering from a Si target on 25 nm thick Ni prelayers at 525 °C. Silicon grew heteroepitaxially on the NiSi2 layer formed due to the reaction between the sputtered Si atoms and Ni. Schottky diodes were fabricated on the Si films by deposition of a Schottky metal on the front surface of the film while Ni disilicide provided an intimate ohmic contact at the back. A Pd/n-Si diode using an n-Si film annealed for 2 h at 700 °C in forming gas demonstrated a rectification ratio …

Improvement Of Resonant Harmonic Filter Effectiveness In The Presence Of Distribution Voltage Distortion, Herbert L. Ginn
Improvement Of Resonant Harmonic Filter Effectiveness In The Presence Of Distribution Voltage Distortion, Herbert L. Ginn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Resonant harmonic filters (RHFs), are the most common devices installed in distribution systems for reducing distortion caused by harmonic generating loads. When such filters are applied in systems with a distorted distribution voltage their effectiveness may decline drastically. This dissertation explores the causes of degradation of RHFs effectiveness and suggests methods of their improvement both by optimization algorithms and by modification of the filter structure. An optimization based design method is developed for the conventional RHF. It takes into consideration the interaction of the filter with the distribution system and provides a filter which gives the maximum effectiveness with respect …

Improved Energy Model For Membrane Electroporation In Biological Cells Subjected To Electrical Pulses, R. P. Joshi, Q. Hu, K. H. Schoenbach, H. P. Hjalmarson
Bioelectrics Publications
A self-consistent model analysis of electroporation in biological cells has been carried out based on an improved energy model. The simple energy model used in the literature is somewhat incorrect and unphysical for a variety of reasons. Our model for the pore formation energy E(r) includes a dependence on pore population and density. It also allows for variable surface tension, incorporates the effects of finite conductivity on the electrostatic correction term, and is dynamic in nature. Self-consistent calculations, based on a coupled scheme involving the Smoluchowski equation and the improved energy model, are presented. It is shown that E(r) becomes …

Electrical Network-Based Time-Dependent Model Of Electrical Breakdown In Water, R. P. Joshi, J. Qian, K. H. Schoenbach
Bioelectrics Publications
A time-dependent, two-dimensional, percolative approach to model dielectric breakdown based on a network of parallel resistor–capacitor elements having random values, has been developed. The breakdown criteria rely on a threshold electric field and on energy dissipation exceeding the heat of vaporization. By carrying out this time-dependent analysis, the development and propagation of streamers and prebreakdown dynamical evolution have been obtained directly. These model simulations also provide the streamer shape, characteristics such as streamer velocity, the prebreakdown delay time, time-dependent current, and relationship between breakdown times, and applied electric fields for a given geometry. The results agree well with experimental data …

An electromechanical analysis based on thin-shell theory is presented to analyze cell shape changes in response to external electric fields. This approach can be extended to include osmotic-pressure changes. Our calculations demonstrate that at large fields, the spherical cell geometry can be significantly modified, and even ellipsoidal forms would be inappropriate to account for the deformation. Values of the surface forces obtained from our calculations are in very good agreement with the 1–10 mN/m range for membrane rupture reported in the literature. The results, in keeping with reports in the literature, demonstrate that the final shape depends on membrane thickness. …

The cost of providing nonemergency transportation to Medicaid and other transportation-eligible people has escalated sharply in the United States. In response, many states have reformed their human services transportation delivery systems. In this paper, we assess the results of Kentucky’s comprehensive reform of its transit system, including the impact on the quality of transit service for Medicaid-eligible users. With three sources of data—financial and other service data, a sample of Medicaid-eligible residents, and a sample of the transit providers—we assess the effectiveness of the new system. The data show that patronage levels increased dramatically under the new process, while unit …
Mass Transfer Reactions And Decay Sinks For Disinfectants In Water Distribution Systems, Jeremy B. Jones
Mass Transfer Reactions And Decay Sinks For Disinfectants In Water Distribution Systems, Jeremy B. Jones
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Treatment plants utilize chlorine and chloramine both as a primary disinfectant for water purification and a secondary disinfectant for distribution system protection. The treatment goal is that the disinfectant residual be present throughout the distribution system until it reaches the customer's tap. Maintaining a residual throughout the system is critical for providing pathogen-free water and protecting human health. Therefore, water utility authorities are very interested in how disinfectants such as chlorine and chloramine decay as they travel through a water distribution system.
Current mathematical models typically divide the decay into two distinct phases. There is (1) decay occurring in the …
Active And Adaptive Flow Control Of Twin-Tail Buffet And Applications, Zhi Yang
Active And Adaptive Flow Control Of Twin-Tail Buffet And Applications, Zhi Yang
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Modern fighter aircraft with dual vertical tails are operated at high angles of attack. The vortex generated by leading edge extension (LEX) breaks down before reaching the two vertical tails. The wake of highly unsteady, turbulent flow causes unbalanced broadband aerodynamic loading on the tails and may produce severe buffet on the tails and lead to tail fatigue failure.
Flow suction along the vortex cores (FSVC) is investigated as an active control method for tail-buffet alleviation. Suction tubes have been tilted at different angles to study the control effectiveness of suction tubes orientation. Flow field response, aerodynamic loading and aeroelastic …

Finite Element Modal Formulation For Panel Flutter At Hypersonic Speeds And Elevated Temperatures, Guangfeng Cheng
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A finite element time domain modal formulation for analyzing flutter behavior of aircraft surface panels in hypersonic airflow has been developed and presented for the first time. Von Karman large deflection plate theory is used for description of the structural nonlinearity and third order piston theory is employed to account for the aerodynamic nonlinearity. The thermal loadings of uniformly distributed temperature and temperature gradients across the panel thickness are incorporated into the finite element formulation. By applying the modal reduction technique, the number of governing equations of motion is reduced dramatically so that the computational time of direct numerical integration …

The results obtained from a study on the microstructure and the electrical properties of Gd-doped CeO2 thin films were reported. Dense, nanocrystalline films on sapphire substrates are prepared using a polymeric precursor spin coating technique. The electrical conductivity was studied as a function of temperature and oxygen activity and correlated with the grain size. For nanocrystalline Gd-doped CeO2 thin films, the ionic conductivity increased with decreasing activation energy as the grain size decreased. A conductivity model was developed to analyze PO2 behavior of the electrical conductivity. Using the conductivity model, the hopping energy of electron conduction and …
