Evaluation Of The Shear Modulus In Models For Shallow-Foundation Dynamics Within The Elastic Domain, Jean-Louis Chazelas
Evaluation Of The Shear Modulus In Models For Shallow-Foundation Dynamics Within The Elastic Domain, Jean-Louis Chazelas
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The aim of this presentation is to examine the relationship of the equivalent homogeneous shear moduli used in impedance models with stresses under the footing, through the use of scaled models in the centrifuge and an impact loading. The analysis of time and frequency vertical responses of footings reveals that reflections on the boundaries are negligible. The frequency response of a series of circular and square footings is shown to be rather easily-fitted with Wolf’s models for foundations on an infinite half-space with reasonably consistent parameters for masses, damping and shear moduli. The damping is nearly constant, yet significantly lower …

The Observed Building Damage Associated With Fault Movement In 1999 Chi-Chi (Taiwan) Earthquake, H. W. Yang, S. M. Lin, Daniel Chu
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The Chi-Chi earthquake caused severe damage of many buildings primarily due to surface faulting and ground shaking. It has been reported that about 10,000 buildings collapsed and 8000 buildings suffered varying degrees of damage. The observed damage to buildings resulted from many factors that include ground movement, acceleration, design code, and construction quality. The damage to buildings near the fault was attributed primarily to the ground movement. One observed phenomenon is that the damage in the up-lifted side (east side) of the rupture fault was much more severe than the opposing side (west side) of the fault mainly due to …

Relevant Aspects Of Applying Soil Improvement Method For Liquefaction Mitigation — Case Study, Valtko Sesov, Kosta Talaganov
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper presents some experience gathered during the implementation of soil improvement in founding of a residential-business complex located in seismically prone area. The previously performed field and laboratory geomechanical tests proved that the geotechnical medium of the location was characterized by a high heterogeneity of soil materials with predominant presence of layers of low strength-deformability characteristics. A high underground water level and layers of fine-grained uniform sands susceptible to dynamic instability under seismic effects were observed. Such an unfavorable geotechnical situation of the given location imposed the need of improving of the natural foundation soil. The most favorable and …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
In the years following the Irpinia earthquake (1980), the old town of Bisaccia, located on a conglomerate hill overlaying a thick clay formation, experienced a slow subsidence revealed by topographic measurements. The paper summarizes the results of the numerical simulations of the effects of the Irpinia earthquake on the Bisaccia hill. The input data for the analyses were the acceleration records of the seismic event at the site and the geotechnical characterization obtained by dynamic and cyclic torsional tests on undisturbed clay shales. The analyses confirmed the hypothesis that the town subsidence was caused by a post-cyclic soil re-compression as …

Geotechnical Characterization Of Success Dam For A Dam Safety Earthquake Engineering Evaluation, Matthew G. Allen, John S. Nickell, Steve G. Sherer
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Success Dam, primarily a flood control and water conservation structure owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, lies in Seismic Zone 3. During construction of the dam, the impervious core trench was excavated to either weathered bedrock or older alluvium. However, the pervious outer zones of the embankment were constructed on existing in-situ materials, including recent alluvium, that were only minimally prepared. In 1992, the Corps of Engineers concluded that the state-of-practice allowed for a better understanding of the seismic response of the alluvial soils than was previously available, and a study to update the seismic stability …

Analysis Of Some Downhole Acceleration Records From "Central De Abasto Oficinas" Site At Mexico City, Hernán Martínez-Carvajal, Víctor M. Taboada-Urtuzuástegui, Miguel P. Romo
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The surface and downhole accelerations records of “Central de Abasto Oficinas (CAO)” array at Mexico City, have been analyzed to determine the soil stiffness as a function of shear strain amplitude. The 09/10/95 seismic event (NS component) has been used for this purpose. The shear stress-strain histories have been evaluated directly from the field downhole acceleration records, employing a technique of system identification, and used to obtain the variation of shear modulus with shear strain amplitude. A shear-beam model, calibrated by the identified properties, is found to represent the site dynamic response characteristics. The results have been compared with values …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
On observing the recent big earthquakes that have occurred in Turkey (M.7.4, 1999.8.17) and Taiwan (M.7.3, 1999.9.21), it is understood that the differential ground displacement is also responsible for the failure of structures. Now, it is understood that there is a need to channelize the research interests to study the failure propagating mechanism through the soil deposit. Numerous researchers have attempted to study this phenomenon through, experiments for understanding the effects of seismic fault mechanism and soil deposit parameters on surface deformation characteristics. However, from the widespread damage caused by the recent events, it is now clear that the earthquakes …

An earthquake of September 7, 1999 (M5.9) has occurred in the Athens (Attika) area and was felt in almost all central Greece. The earthquake caused a lot of damage and extensive loss of life. The most damaged region is located within a distance of 10 km from the epicenter and numerous modem buildings and industrial facilities collapsed. The accelerograms, which have been recorded during the main event, are processed and compared with the empirical predictive relations proposed for Greece. For each record, the bracketed and significant duration as well as various energy-related measures are estimated. The correlation of these measures …

Deep Foundations In Liquefiable Soils: Case Histories, Centrifuge Tests And Methods Of Analysis, W. D. Liam Finn, T. Thavaraj
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
This paper describes the performance of pile foundations in liquefied soils. Two different aspects of pile response are considered, seismic response to earthquake shaking and response to lateral spreading when the liquefied ground is sloping. The case histories show that piles can be designed economically to resist large lateral displacements and that most of the reported examples of damage from lateral spreading involve weak piles with little reinforcement which were installed to control vertical settlements and were not designed to be moment resistant. A quasi-3-D continuum method is presented for dynamic effective stress response analysis of pile groups in liquefiable …

On September 21, 1999, Taiwan was struck by an earthquake, called Chi-Chi earthquake, one of the largest in 100 years. The epicenter was located 12.5 km west of the Sun Moon Lake (Northern Latitude 23.85°) Eastern Longitude 120.78°), with focal depth of 8 km, and magnitude of Mw=7.6 (USGS). This earthquake caused heavy casualties and severe property damages around central Taiwan. It was found that this earthquake resulted in sand boiling, differential settlement on the ground and lateral spreading around part of the Maolou River bank in Nantou City. Field investigation, geological exploration and in situ tests, which …

Seismic Design Of Mixed And Hazardous Waste Landfills, Edward Kavazanjian Jr., Neven Matasovic
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Due to the absence of federal criteria, seismic design and performance criteria for mixed and hazardous waste landfills are generally developed on a project-specific basis, supplemented by state and project-specific standards. In developing project-specific criteria, the federal Subtitle D standards for seismic design of municipal solid waste landfills are often used as a minimum standard for mixed and hazardous waste facilities. Seismic performance standards are also usually developed on a project-specific basis, employing either a “withstand without harmful discharge” or a “withstand without damage” performance standard, depending on the certainty of continuing aftercare. Quantitative criteria established to demonstrate compliance with …

Risk Analysis In Geotechnical And Earthquake Engineering, State-Of-The-Art Practice Of Embankment Dams, D. N. D. Hartford
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Despite a proliferation of papers on quantitative risk analysis for dams during the past twenty years, risk analysis has not found widespread application in dam safety practice. Recent experience suggests that, despite a great deal of enthusiasm in the 1990’s, the professional opinion concerning the usefulness of risk analysis in dam safety practice is almost as divided now as it was in the early 1980’s. This paper presents an account of the history and development of risk analysis ln dam safety practice in the field of geotechnical earthquake engineering since its inception in the early 1960’s to September 2000. Against …

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
Recent experimental and analytical research on seismic behavior of shallow foundations is illustrated. The most significant results on the seismic bearing capacity of footings with pseudo-static approaches are reviewed first, including an analytical formula recently proposed for the new version of the “seismic” Eurocode 8. Afterwards, we present the salient experimental results of large-scale cyclic tests of a shallow foundation model (1m x 1m in plan) resting on a large volume of sand, with relative densities 45% and 85%, discussing them in detail. Under earthquake-like cyclic loading, with peak values close to the pseudo-static failure limit, significant permanent settlement and …

Review Of Soil And Topography Effects In The September 7, 1999 Athens (Greece) Earthquake, George D. Bouckovalas, George Kouretzis
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The earthquake that hit Athens, Greece on September 7, 1999 was an unexpected disaster. It originated from a previously unknown seismotectonic structure, at about 18 km to the west of the historical center, and left behind 143 casualties, about 100,000 homeless and 100 totally collapsed buildings. On the other hand, it provided a number of reliable strong motion recordings and well-defined patterns of damage at sites with known geological and geotechnical conditions. Evaluation of this information shows that the very stiff soils of the Athens basin amplified seismic ground motion by an average of 40% compared to nearby outcropping soft …

Recent Studies On Seismic Centrifuge Modeling Of Liquefaction And Its Effects On Deep Foundations, Ricardo Dobry, Tarek Abdoun
International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics
The effects of liquefaction on deep foundations are very damaging and costly, and they keep recurring in many earthquakes. The first part of the paper reviews the field experience of deep foundations affected by liquefaction during earthquakes in the last few decades, as well as the main lessons learned. The second part of the paper presents results of physical modeling of deep foundations in the presence of liquefaction conducted mostly in the U.S. and Japan in the 1990’s, with emphasis on the work done by the authors and others at the 100 g-ton RPI centrifuge. Centrifuge models of instrumented single …
