Reifying Communication At The Application Level, Andrew P. Black, Jie Huang, Jonathan Walpole Oct 2001

Reifying Communication At The Application Level, Andrew P. Black, Jie Huang, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Middleware, from the earliest RPC systems to recent Object-Oriented Remote Message Sending (RMS) systems such as Java RMI and CORBA, claims transparency as one of its main attributes. Coulouris et al. define transparency as “the concealment from the … application programmer of the separation of components in a distributed system.” They go on to identify eight different kinds of transparency.

We considered titling this paper “Transparency Considered Harmful”, but that title is misleading because it implies that all kinds of transparency are bad. This is not our view. Rather, we believe that the choice of which transparencies should be offered …

Convergence Classes And Spaces Of Partial Functions, Anthony K. Seda, Roland Heinze, Pascal Hitzler Oct 2001

Convergence Classes And Spaces Of Partial Functions, Anthony K. Seda, Roland Heinze, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We study the relationship between convergence spaces and convergence classes given by means of both nets and filters, we consider the duality between them and we identify in convergence terms when a convergence space coincides with a convergence class. We examine the basic operators in the Vienna Development Method of formal systems development, namely, extension, glueing, restriction, removal and override, from the perspective of the Logic for Computable Functions. Thus, we examine in detail the Scott continuity, or otherwise, of these operators when viewed as operators on the domain (XY) of partial functions mapping X into …

Low Proof Load Prediction Of Ultimate Strengths Of Fiberglass/Epoxy I-Beams Using Acoustic Emission, Edward C. Fatzinger Jr. Oct 2001

Low Proof Load Prediction Of Ultimate Strengths Of Fiberglass/Epoxy I-Beams Using Acoustic Emission, Edward C. Fatzinger Jr.

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Acoustic emission (AE) nondestructive testing was used to monitor fiberglass/epoxy I-beams. The experiment consisted of loading the I-beams in cantilever fashion with a hydraulic ram. While testing, AE waveforms were collected from the onset of loading to failure. After acquisition, the AE data from each test were filtered to include only data collected up to 50% of the theoretical ultimate load for further analysis.

A Kohonen self-organizing map was utilized to separate each individual data point (hit) into failure mechanism clusters. Then a multiple linear regression analysis was performed using the percentage of hits associated with each failure mechanism along …

Design And Construction Of A 1/3-Scale, 1986 Cessna 172p Flight-Test Aircraft, Michael J. Hinton

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The incredible cost of prototype flight testing can be a very limiting factor in the optimization of new designs as they proceed from the drawing board to the flight line. The use of low-cost scaled models to predict full-scale prototype performance is the focus of this project. It will be shown that by strictly following geometric and dynamic scaling criteria, the scaled aircraft's flight performance can be predictably related to the full-scale aircraft's performance. Many companies have performed scaled flight-testing of Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPV's) and there is much speculation as to the results of these tests, but non-proprietary information …

Automated Myocardial Infarction Diagnosis From Ecg, Chen Zhou

Doctoral Dissertations

In the present dissertation, an automated neural network-based ECG diagnosing system was designed to detect the presence of myocardial infarction based on the hypothesis that an artificial neural network-based ECG interpretation system may improve the clinical myocardial infarction. 137 patients were included. Among them 122 had myocardial infarction, but the remaining 15 were normal. The sensitivity and the specificity of present system were 92.2% and 50.7% respectively. The sensitivity was consistent with relevant research. The relatively low specificity results from the rippling of the low pass filtering. We can conclude that neural network-based system is a promising aid for the …

Metrics-Guided Quality Management For Component-Based Software Systems, Sahra Sedigh, Arif Ghafoor, Raymond A. Paul Oct 2001

Metrics-Guided Quality Management For Component-Based Software Systems, Sahra Sedigh, Arif Ghafoor, Raymond A. Paul

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The growing reliance on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components for developing large-scale projects introduces a new paradigm in software Engineering; which requires the design of new software development and business processes. Large scale component reuse leads to savings in development resources, enabling these resources to be applied to areas such as quality improvement. These savings come at the price of integration difficulties, performance constraints, and incompatibility of components from multiple vendors. Relying on COTS components also increases the system''s vulnerability to risks arising from third-party development, which can negatively affect the quality of the system, as well as causing expenses not incurred …

Pilot Study: Lateral Braced C-Sections Under Bending, B. Beshara, Roger A. Laboube Oct 2001

Pilot Study: Lateral Braced C-Sections Under Bending, B. Beshara, Roger A. Laboube

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The overall behavior under uniform load of cold-formed steel C-sections assemblies was investigated. Each test assembly consisted of C-sections acting as beams having a track section to restrain its ends. A lateral brace to restrain the C-sections from rotation was provided at mid-span. To better understand the influence of the brace on the flexural behavior, an experimental investigation was carried out with particular emphasis placed on the study of the effect of the mid-span brace connection when wallboard was attached to the tension flange. The tested moment capacities are compared to predictions based on the 1996 edition American Iron and …

Techniques For Reduced Order Modeling Of Aeroelastic Structures With Deforming Grids, John S. R. Anttonen Oct 2001

Techniques For Reduced Order Modeling Of Aeroelastic Structures With Deforming Grids, John S. R. Anttonen

Theses and Dissertations

Reduced order modeling (ROM) seeks to make the modeling of aeroelastic behavior practical by reducing computation time for design codes. Deforming grids are often used in aeroelastic problems to account for the deformation of the structure. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD/ROM) is a ROM technique that operates in an index-space for computations, not accounting for changes in grid dynamics, and must be modified to reflect grid deformation properly. To investigate and account for the effects of grid deformation on POD/ROM, a new algorithm is developed that incorporates modifications to the usual formulation. Evaluation of the new algorithm is accomplished through application …

An Object-Oriented Resource Pool Model In Support Of Discrete Event Simulations, Srinivas Gullapalli Oct 2001

An Object-Oriented Resource Pool Model In Support Of Discrete Event Simulations, Srinivas Gullapalli

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The proper distribution of resources is a key factor in simulation. Resources provide the supporting facilities, equipment, and personnel for carrying out activities. The number of resources has a direct impact on the overall effectiveness of the simulation as it does in real life. If the number is insufficient, it generally takes more time for the process to complete. On the other hand, if the number is too high, the cost incurred on the resources will be unnecessarily large. Therefore, the count should be a compromise between the two extremes.

In this thesis, an attempt is made to generalize the …

Computational Fluid Dynamic Study Of A Nascar Winston Cup Series Race Car, Terry L. Meek Jr. Oct 2001

Computational Fluid Dynamic Study Of A Nascar Winston Cup Series Race Car, Terry L. Meek Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Since the goal of NASCAR racing is to win and since drag is a force the vehicle must overcome, a thorough understanding of the drag generating airflow around and through the automobile is greatly desired. The external airflow contributes to most of the drag that a car experiences and most of the downforce the vehicle produces. Therefore, an estimate of the vehicle's performance may be evaluated using a computational aerodynamics model. This thesis presents a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis of a NASCAR Winston Cup series race car to investigate the salient flow characteristics.

Before a computational analysis could be …

Investigation Of Dual-Mode Combustion With Large Upstream Interaction, Melanic Olynciw-Mills

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Dual-mode scramjet combustor configuration with significant upstream interaction is investigated numerically. The possibility of scaling the domain to accelerate the convergence an3 reduce the computational time is explored. The supersonic combustor configuration was selected to provide an understanding of key features of upstream interaction and to identify physical and numerical issues relating to modeling of dual-mode configurations. The numerical analysis was performed with vitiated air at freestream Mach number of 2.5 using hydrogen as the sonic injectant. Results are presented for two-dimensional models and a three-dimensional jet-to-jet symmetric geometry. Comparisons are made with experimental results. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional results show …

Transonic And Supersonic High Alpha Flow Prediction And Control For An Sc-X Space Vehicle, Ruobo You

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Universal Space Line (USL) is interested in developing an aerospace vehicle that flies at very high angles of attack (AOAs) through wide range of Mach numbers. The basic model configuration is called SC-X model, which consists of a blunt cone and a cylindrical afterbody. A structured O-type grid was generated for this model by numerically solving elliptic partial differential equations. The three-dimensional, unsteady, compressible, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations coupled with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model were used as computational tool to investigate the transonic and supersonic flows around the SC-X model pitched at AOA of 45°. For the code validation, this computational solver …

Freightliner Llc Manufacturing Optimization, Jerry Compton, Ryan Jefferis, Hasnah Mat-Amin, Felix Ngoussou Oct 2001

Freightliner Llc Manufacturing Optimization, Jerry Compton, Ryan Jefferis, Hasnah Mat-Amin, Felix Ngoussou

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

Freightliner LLC has been producing innovative products since 1942 for the trucking industry. Following a 1981 acquisition by Daimler-Benz AG, Freightliner has steadily gained market share through acquisition and fleet sales. Following record production in 1999 at maximum yield levels, year 2000 hit the heavy truck market especially hard. High diesel fuel prices, low used truck values, and a slowing economy were just a few reasons for reduced truck sales.

Through Ql of 2001, heavy vehicle production was down 54% compared to 2000 in attempts of lowering inventory amounts. In this new market, capacity is no longer the overall manufacturing …

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides: Experiment, Marius Ghita, Lee W. Casperson Oct 2001

Gaussian Beams In Hollow Metal Waveguides: Experiment, Marius Ghita, Lee W. Casperson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Gaussian beams have been widely used for propagating electromagnetic waves in free space and in certain other optical systems. It has been suggested that recurring forms of such beams might also be useful for propagation in planar or rectangular metal waveguides. Experimental verification of the recurrence of the Gaussian field distribution in metal waveguides is reported here.

The Effects Of Via Transitions On Differential Signals, Chen Wang, Jun Fan, James L. Knighten, Norman W. Smith, Ray Alexander, James L. Drewniak Oct 2001

The Effects Of Via Transitions On Differential Signals, Chen Wang, Jun Fan, James L. Knighten, Norman W. Smith, Ray Alexander, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vias in differential transmission lines have been modeled using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The velocity that the differential signal propagated through the vias was estimated. Differential S-parameters were calculated up to 50 GHz. Below 10 GHz, the differential signal can propagate through vias without much reflection and distortion. However, as frequency increases, the reflection from the vias and the loss of differential power become significant.

A Simple, Robust, And On-Site Microwave Technique For Determining Water-To-Cement Ratio (W/C) Of Fresh Portland Cement-Based Materials, K. Mubarak, Karl Joseph Bois, R. Zoughi Oct 2001

A Simple, Robust, And On-Site Microwave Technique For Determining Water-To-Cement Ratio (W/C) Of Fresh Portland Cement-Based Materials, K. Mubarak, Karl Joseph Bois, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inspection and evaluation of cement-based materials such as concrete is of great interest to the construction industry. In particular, real-time and on-site evaluation of water-to-cement ratio (w/c) is an important practical issue, since the compressive strength of a concrete structure is significantly influenced by its w/c. Currently, there is no single real-time, on-site, relatively in-expensive, easy-to-implement, and operator friendly technique for evaluating this parameter. Microwave nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques have shown great promise when used for inspection and evaluation of the properties of cement-based materials. In this paper, the optimal design of a monopole antenna probe used to evaluate …

Determination Of Life Cycle Cost Under Uncertainty, Hamoud R. Al-Otaibi Oct 2001

Determination Of Life Cycle Cost Under Uncertainty, Hamoud R. Al-Otaibi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The subject of this thesis is a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) model that takes into consideration the uncertainty of equipment failure rate and input data. The outcome of LCC depends on numerous estimates, forecasts, assumptions, and approximations of real-life data. Each of these factors has the potential to introduce error into the results. The study focuses upon the database generated for equipment failure rates data developed from historical database based on Weibull distribution parameters. The model provides a method to simulate real-world project life cycle.

On Clustering And Retrieval Of Video Shots, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang Oct 2001

On Clustering And Retrieval Of Video Shots, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Clustering of video data is an important issue in video abstraction, browsing and retrieval. In this paper, we propose a two-level hierarchical clustering approach by aggregating shots with similar motion and color features. Motion features are computed directly from 20 tensor histograms, while color features are represented by 30 color histograms. Cluster validity analysis is further applied to automatically determine the number of clusters at each level. Video retrieval can then be done directly based on the result of clustering. The proposed approach is found to be useful particularly for sports games, where motion and color are important visual cues …

Evaluation Of The Land Surface Water Budget In Ncep/Ncar And Ncep/Doe Reanalyses Using An Off-Line Hydrologic Model, Edwin P. Maurer, Greg M. O'Donnell, Dennis P. Lettenmaier Sep 2001

Evaluation Of The Land Surface Water Budget In Ncep/Ncar And Ncep/Doe Reanalyses Using An Off-Line Hydrologic Model, Edwin P. Maurer, Greg M. O'Donnell, Dennis P. Lettenmaier

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

The ability of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) reanalysis (NRA1) and the follow-up NCEP/Department of Energy (DOE) reanalysis (NRA2), to reproduce the hydrologic budgets over the Mississippi River basin is evaluated using a macroscale hydrology model. This diagnosis is aided by a relatively unconstrained global climate simulation using the NCEP global spectral model, and a more highly constrained regional climate simulation using the NCEP regional spectral model, both employing the same land surface parameterization (LSP) as the reanalyses. The hydrology model is the variable infiltration capacity (VIC) model, which is forced by gridded …

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

Experimental evaluation of high temperature, Fatigue Crack Growth Rate (FCGR) data for Ti-6A1-4V, a titanium alloy, is presented. The FCGR data were measured at room temperature, 175, 230, 290 and 345°C using the Direct Current Potential Difference (DCPD) technique. Compact Tension (CT) specimens were used in the program and crack growth rates (da/dN) vs. Mode I stress intensity factor ranges (ΔΚ) were plotted as a function of temperature. A temperature rise from 175 to 345°C did not cause a substantial increase in crack growth rates within the Stage II region where a linear relationship describes the behavior. Fonnation of secondary …
