Design And Implementation Of A Biologically Realistic Olfactory Cortex In Analog Vlsi, Jose C. Principe, Vitor G. Tavares, John G. Harris, Walter J. Freeman
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper reviews the problem of translating signals into symbols preserving maximally the information contained in the signal time structure. In this context, we motivate the use of nonconvergent dynamics for the signal to symbol translator. We then describe a biologically realistic model of the olfactory system proposed by Walter Freeman that has locally stable dynamics but is globally chaotic. We show how we can discretize Freemans model using digital signal processing techniques, providing an alternative to the more conventional Runge-Kutta integration. This analysis leads to a direct mixed signal {analog amplitude/discrete time) implementation of the dynamical building block that …

Consensus Evidence Evaluation In Resuscitation Research: Analysis Of Type I And Type Ii Errors, Charles F. Babbs
Consensus Evidence Evaluation In Resuscitation Research: Analysis Of Type I And Type Ii Errors, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Objective: This paper addresses the following statistical question: ‘if genuine improvements in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) were discovered that doubled the probability of resuscitation success in a series of randomized clinical trials, would they be recognized and incorporated into consensus guidelines?’ Methods: Statistical powers for hypothetical individual clinical trials comparing experimental and control CPR were computed as a function of the study N when the true probabilities for immediate survival, 24 h survival, and discharge survival in the experimental group were twice those in the control group. Next, the binomial distributions describing the numbers of statistically significant studies in a series …

Simulating Quasi-Ballistic Transport In Si Nanotransistors, Kausar Banoo, Jung-Hoon Rhew, Mark S. Lundstrom, Chi-Wang Shu, Joseph W. Jerome
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Electron transport in model Si nanotransistors is examined by numerical simulation using a hierarchy of simulation methods, from full Boltzmann, to hydrodynamic, energy transport, and drift-diffusion. The on-current of a MOSFET is shown to be limited by transport across a low-field region about one mean-free-path long and located at the beginning of the channel. Commonly used transport models based on simplified solutions of the Boltzmann equation are shown to fail under such conditions. The cause for this failure is related to the neglect of the carriers' drift energy and to the collision-dominated assumptions typically used in the development of simplified …
Biomechanics Of Heading A Soccer Ball: Implications For Player Safety, Charles F. Babbs
Biomechanics Of Heading A Soccer Ball: Implications For Player Safety, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
To better understand the risk and safety of heading a soccer ball, the author created a set of simple mathematical models based upon Newton’s second law of motion to describe the physics of heading. These models describe the player, the ball, the flight of the ball before impact, the motion of the head and ball during impact, and the effects of all of these upon the intensity and the duration of acceleration of the head. The calculated head accelerations were compared to those during presumably safe daily activities of jumping, dancing, and head nodding and also were related to established …
An Analysis Of Speed Limit Policies For Indiana, Nisar M. Khan, Kumares C. Sinha
An Analysis Of Speed Limit Policies For Indiana, Nisar M. Khan, Kumares C. Sinha
JTRP Technical Reports
The repeal of the National maximum Speed Limit law in 1995 enabled individual states to set their own speed limits. Speed limits are necessary to ensure mobility while preserving highway safety. It is important that states continually monitor and evaluate existing operating speeds in the context of changing patterns of travel, and changing characteristics of highways, vehicles, drivers, and land-use. Any efforts to review existing speed limits should be accompanied by evaluation of policy impacts such as safety and economic productivity. The goal of this research is to develop a set of speed limit policy guidelines for the state. The …

On Modular Design Of Field Robotic Systems, Shane Farritor, Steven Dubowsky
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Robots are needed to perform important field tasks such as hazardous material clean-up, nuclear site inspection, and space exploration. Unfortunately their use is not widespread due to their long development times and high costs. To make them practical, a modular design approach is proposed. Prefabricated modules are rapidly assembled to give a low-cost system for a specific task. This paper described the modular design problem for field robots and the application of a hierarchical selection process to solve this problem. Theoretical analysis and an example case study are presented. The theoretical analysis of the modular design problem revealed the large …

Evidence Of Nanostructure In Multilayer Cdse Thin Films, Suganthi Devadason
Student Works (2000-2009)
Cadmium Selenide multilayer thin films have been prepared using physical vapour deposition method. Alternate layers of Cadmium and Selenium are deposited on unheated glass substrates. Morphological study of the samples has been done using SEM micrographs with a magnification of 5000. The EDX analysis gives the quantitative atomic percentage content of elements present in the samples. It is found that the high Cadmium content in the samples increased the crystallinity. From XRD measurements, it is evident that many films are polycrystalline in nature with a peak corresponding to < 111 > plane orientation of the zinc blende structure. The lattice constant of the …

Security In Mobile Agent Systems: An Approach To Protect Mobile Agents From Malicious Host Attacks, Dalia Fakhry
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Mobile agents are autonomous programs that roam the Internet from machine to machine under their own control on behalf of their users to perform specific pre-defined tasks. In addition to that, a mobile agent can suspend its execution at any point; transfer itself to another machine then resume execution at the new machine without any loss of state. Such a mobile model can perform many possible types of operations, and might carry critical data that has to be protected from possible attacks. The issue of agent security and specially agent protection from host attacks has been a hot topic and …

Nitrogen Transformations During Secondary Coal Pyrolysis, Haifeng Zhang, Thomas H. Fletcher
Faculty Publications
A CO/H2/O2/N2 flame was operated under fuel-rich conditions in a flat flame reactor to provide a high-temperature, oxygen-free environment to study secondary reactions of coal volatiles. The distributions of fuel nitrogen in the devolatilization products of four coals, ranging from high volatile bituminous to lignite, were obtained at gas temperatures ranging from 1159 to 1858 K. It was found that the initial nitrogen released was contained almost exclusively in the tar for all coals. Release of nitrogen from the char as light gases started at a later stage than tar nitrogen release. During secondary reactions, …

Use And Effectiveness Of Decision Support Systems (Dss): Study Of The Saudi Private Sector, Ibrahim A. Alhunaishel
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In the industrialized world today, management is characterized by extensive use of computers to manage rapid change, information overload, and complex decision-making. Literature suggests that Decision Support Systems, computer packages offering information retrieval, problem-structuring models, decision alternatives, and other types of decision support, are effective extensions of human decision-making and offer substantial benefits to organizations utilizing them.
In spite of overwhelmingly positive reviews for DSS, empirical literature has produced inconsistent results regarding DSS effectiveness, and definitions of “effectiveness” and of DSS itself are varied and sometimes contradictory. Distinguishing DSS from MIS (management information systems) and other types of managerial computer …

The Effects Of Multitasking On Quality Inspection In Advanced Manufacturing Systems, Jose A. Pesante, Robert C. Williges, Jeffrey C. Woldstad
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Although the industrial quality inspection task has been extensively studied, the effect of multitasking on the performance of the operator in a hybrid inspection system is still unknown. The experiment described in this article compared the quality inspection performance for participants performing a single task, 3 multiple tasks, and 5 multiple tasks. The results of this research indicate that the performance of the operator in the quality inspection task while multitasking in an advanced manufacturing system will be determined by the interaction between the number of different types of defects that can be presented at the same time in the …

Combining Activity-Based Costing With The Simulation Of A Cellular Manufacturing System, Paul Savory, Robert Williams, Rodney Rassmuseun
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper presents an integrated simulation and activity-based management approach for determining the best sequencing scheme for processing a part family through a manufacturing cell. The integration is illustrated on a loop or U-shaped manufacturing cell and a part family consisting of four part types (A, B, C, and D). Production requirements for the cell demand that part batches be processed one type at a time. For example, all part A’s are processed until weekly demand is met, then part B’s, etc. The objective of this example is to determine the best part sequence (e.g., ABCD, DCBA or CABD). In …

Combining Activity-Based Costing With The Simulation Of A Cellular Manufacturing System, Paul Savory, Robert Williams, Rodney Rassmuseun
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Discrete-event simulation is one of the most effective techniques for analyzing a manufacturing system. Unfortunately, little attention is given to using simulation models to estimate the economic impact of a proposed system configuration. This paper defines how activity-based costing (ABC) concepts can be incorporated into a discrete-event simulation model. Special emphasis is on demonstrating how decision making can be aided by having the simulation create a detailed “Bill of Activity” describing costs associated with manufacturing a part. The integration of ABC and simulation is illustrated by evaluating the impact of a proposed manufacturing cell configuration. The additional costing information aids …

Polarimetric Processing Of Coherent Random Noise Radar Data For Buried Object Detection, Yi Xu, Ram M. Narayanan, Xiojian Xu, John O. Curtis
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Random noise polarimetry is a new radar technique for high-resolution probing of subsurface objects and interfaces. The University of Nebraska has developed a polarimetric random noise radar system based on the heterodyne correlation technique. Simulation studies and performance tests on the system confirm its ability to respond to phase differences in the received signals. In addition to polarimetric processing capability and the simplified system design, random noise radar also possesses other desirable features, such as immunity from radio frequency interference (RFI). The paper discusses the theoretical foundations of random noise polarimetry, and presents examples out of the entire data set …
Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki
Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient method for optimizing correlation properties of polyphase spreading sequences for asynchronous DS CDMA applications. The proposed method can be used to minimize the mean square value of aperiodic crosscorrelation or the mean square value of aperiodic autocorrelation, the maximum value of aperiodic crosscorrelation functions, merit factor or other properties of the sequence set. The important feature of the method is that when applied to orthogonal sequences, it modifies correlation properties of the sequence set, while preserves their orthogonality for perfect synchronization.

Application Of Fuzzy Logic In Automated Cow Status Monitoring, R. M. De Mol, Wayne Woldt
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Sensors that measure yield, temperature, electrical conductivity of milk, and animal activity can be used for automated cow status monitoring. The occurrence of false-positive alerts, generated by a detection model, creates problems in practice. We used fuzzy logic to classify mastitis and estrus alerts; our objective was to reduce the number of false-positive alerts and not to change the level of detected cases of mastitis and estrus. Inputs for the fuzzy logic model were alerts from the detection model and additional information, such as the reproductive status. The output was a classification, true or false, of each alert. Only alerts …
