Investigation Of Quantum Resistor Networks For Electron Wave Computing, Diwakar Ramamurthy Jan 2001

Investigation Of Quantum Resistor Networks For Electron Wave Computing, Diwakar Ramamurthy

Masters Theses

A new computing methodology using electron waves has been developed with three and four terminal Quantum Resistor Networks as the basic computational structure. Transmission probability matrices for these networks were derived from first principles from which the behavior of single and simultaneously incident electron waves have been accurately evaluated. Classification and scaling laws have also been provided according to their transmission behavior. Techniques for constructing devices from these networks analogous to the logic gates used in digital computing today have been explained. Numerous examples of such devices performing functions like Inversion, OR, and AND have been provided. The operating principles …

A Dynamic Programming-Based Approach To Microarray Image Comparison And Registration, Sunil Bosco Rodrigues

Masters Theses

"Microarray technology is increasingly used as a means of high throughput analysis of human, non-human and plant genomes. Manual methods of array production have inherent imperfections and variations of the quality of output data derived from these arrays. A dynamic programming-based approach is presented to validate the quality of such data prior to insertion into evolving databases in order to assign reliably, genetic aberrations to bio-medical functions. Dynamic programming is used for comparing normal and tumor microarray image pairs and a cost function is developed which gives a value representing the difference between the images. Quality of the image pairs …

Real-Time Determination Of Soil Type, Water Content, And Density Using Electromagnetics, Vincent P. Drnevich, Chih-Ping Lin, Quanghee Yi, Janet Elaine Lovell

JTRP Technical Reports

The primary objective of this study was to explore the potential use of electromagnetic characteristics of soils using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique to identify physical properties of soils. Three fundamental studies in this exploration are the frequencydependent electromagnetic properties of soils, the wave propagation in a TDR system, and the inverse analyses of TDR waveforms. The three-phase model for soils was extended to a four-phase model so as to account for the interface effect and hence the soil fineness. The physical parameters of the four-phase model are related to the frequency-dependent dielectric permitivity of the soil through a …

Strategic Drivers Of Software Quality: Beyond External And Internal Software Quality, Ronan Fitzpatrick Jan 2001

Strategic Drivers Of Software Quality: Beyond External And Internal Software Quality, Ronan Fitzpatrick

Conference papers

Software quality is often considered in terms of the contractual requirements between the supplier and acquirer as described in ISO/IEC 12207 and focuses on software life cycle processes. However, beyond these processes acquirer organisations need to address other issues like complying with new legislation, securing return on investment, and achieving competitive support from their new software investments. Supplier organisations also have issues that they must manage. This paper addresses all of these issues and presents eleven issues, which it calls strategic drivers. Then, using the SOFTWARE QUALITY STAR, builds a new conceptual model where each strategic quality driver is defined …

Increasing traffic volumes and declining resources have led to a need for innovative winter maintenance strategies, techniques, equipment and materials while not sacrificing the safety of the traveling public. Any reduction of salt usage will ease fund for other maintenance operations while minimizing salt runoff on surface and ground waters and effect of road salt on roadside vegetation. In the past, conventional spreaders have been designed for sand and are generally incapable of metering the lower, more precise amount of salt desired. The use of materials in solid form demands critical timing of the application to minimize loss of the …

Seismic Design Of Deep Foundations, Antonio Bobet, Rodrigo Salgado, Dimitrios Loukidis Jan 2001

Seismic Design Of Deep Foundations, Antonio Bobet, Rodrigo Salgado, Dimitrios Loukidis

JTRP Technical Reports

Detailed investigations of pile foundations affected by earthquakes around the world since the 1960’s indicate that pile foundations are susceptible to damage to such a degree that the serviceability and integrity of the superstructure may be affected. Although numerous cases of seismically damaged piles are reported, the detailed mechanisms causing the damage are not yet fully understood. As a consequence, an effective seismic design of pile foundations has not been yet established in practice. Many road bridge structures supported on piles exist in southern Indiana. This is a region where the risk of occurrence of a dangerous earthquake is high …

Non–Water–Stressed Baseline As A Tool For Dynamic Control Of A Misting System For Propagation Of Poinsettias, Sérgio Zolnier, Richard S. Gates, Robert G. Anderson, Sue E. Nokes, George A. Duncan

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A technique is presented for dynamically adjusting misting intervals during propagation of vegetative cuttings. A crop setpoint temperature for activation of misting was defined by a "non-water-stressed baseline" concept, using infrared thermometry to acquire canopy temperature for plant feedback. The critical crop setpoint temperature was calculated from instantaneous values of air temperature, incident radiation, and air vapor pressure deficit (VPDair). Misting was activated when the actual crop temperature exceeded the critical crop setpoint temperature. The dynamic control was shown to have the potential to reduce the amount of applied water from 9 to 12 times during low levels …

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea Jan 2001

Uniform Random Number Generation Using Pseudorandom Binary Sequences, Susan Rea

Theses

Random numbers have conventionally been used in a range of applications such as numerical analysis, lotteries and computer simulation and as cryptographic keys. The algorithms used for the production of random numbers are termed pseudorandom, as the numbers produced are not truly random as they emanate from a deterministic periodic source that is they are predictable if a subset of the sequence is known. However, for most applications these pseudorandom number sources are entirely suitable.

For cryptographic key sources, however, the random number sequences must be statistically good and difficult to predict. Linear feedback shift registers are presented in this …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Homoepitaxial growth of boron-doped CVD diamond films was carried out on (100) and (111) oriented substrates. Atomic resolution images were obtained for both (100) and (111) surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy. STM images reveal the presence of a 2x1-monohydride reconstruction for the untreated (100) surface and a lxl reconstruction for the untreated (111) surface. No other atomically resolved reconstructions were observed under a wide range of growth conditions. Non-aqueous electrochemical investigations were carried out on the films exhibiting atomically resolved reconstructions. Evidence for potential-induced surface-reconstruction and surface chemical modification of the (100) 2xl-monohydride surface has been observed.
