Pulmonary Arterial Remodeling Revealed By Microfocal X-Ray Tomography, Kelly L. Karau, Robert C. Molthen, Anita H. Dhyani, Steven Thomas Haworth, Christopher A. Dawson

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Animal models and micro-CT imaging are useful for understanding the functional consequences of, and identifying the genes involved in, the remodeling of vascular structures that accompanies pulmonary vascular disease. Using a micro-CT scanner to image contrast-enhanced arteries in excised lungs from fawn hooded rats (a strain genetically susceptible to hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension), we found that portions of the pulmonary arterial tree downstream from a given diameter were morphometrically indistinguishable. This 'self-consistency' property provided a means for summarizing the pulmonary arterial tree architecture and mechanical properties using a parameter vector obtained from measurements of the contiguous set of vessel segments …

Smart Material Control System And Related Method, John A. Main, George C. Nelson Feb 2001

Smart Material Control System And Related Method, John A. Main, George C. Nelson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Patents

A smart material control system and related method is disclosed for adaptively controlling the movement of an adaptive structure. The adaptive structure includes a smart material layer bonded to a conductive substrate in a bimorph configuration. A charge projector, such as an electron gun, is utilized to project charges onto the smart material layer of the adaptive structure. A voltage/charge source adaptively controls the potential of the conductive substrate. Depending on the placement of the projected charges and the adaptively controlled potential of the conductive substrate the displacement/curvature is precisely controlled. In an alternate embodiment, two smart material layers are …

Infrared Response Of Multiple-Component Free-Carrier Plasma In Heavily Doped P-Type Gaas, S. Zangooie, Mathias Schubert, Daniel W. Thompson, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Spectroscopic ellipsometry is used to measure the dielectric function of heavily doped p-type GaAs for wave numbers from 100 to 2000 cm-1. Due to partial filling of the heavy- and light-hole valence bands, heavy holes as well as light holes form a multiple-component plasma coupled with longitudinal optical phonons. Line-shape analysis of the infrared response allows differentiating between light- and heavy-hole contributions to the carrier plasma, and the results observed suggest nonparabolicity effects of the heavy- and light-hole valence bands in GaAs.

Rate Effects On Mode-I Delamination Toughness Of A Graphite/Epoxy Laminated Composite, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis Feb 2001

Rate Effects On Mode-I Delamination Toughness Of A Graphite/Epoxy Laminated Composite, Xiangfa Wu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications

Mechanical properties of composite materials made of high modulus fibers and relatively low modulus polymeric matrix, such as graphite/epoxy laminated composites, are sensitive to loading rate and temperature. Generally, at fixed loading rate, when temperature increases, the fracture toughness of polymers also increases; however, it will decrease with the increase of loading rate at constant testing temperature. Rate effects on fracture toughness are of critical to understand the fracture transition from ductile to brittle of some polymers. However, there have been fewer studies of rate effects on delamination toughness of laminates compared to that of pure polymers. In the present …

Operation of InGaNmultiple-quantum-well(MQW)light-emitting diodes(LEDs) with quaternary AlInGaN barriers at room and elevated temperatures is reported. The devices outperform conventional GaN/InGaN MQWLEDs, especially at high pump currents. From the measurements of quantum efficiency and total emitted power under dc and pulsed pumping, we show the emission mechanism for quaternary barrier MQWs to be predominantly linked to band-to-band transitions. This is in contrast to localized state emission observed for conventional InGaN/InGaN and GaN/InGaN LEDs. The band-to-band recombination with an increased quantum-well depth improves the high-current performance of the quaternary barrier MQWLEDs, making them attractive for high-power solid-state lighting applications.

Faculty Publications

We report on the influence of the channel doping on dc, high frequency, and noise performance of GaN metal–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MESFETs) grown on sapphire substrates. The devices with the channel thicknesses from 50 to 70 nm and doping levels up to 1.5×1018 cm−3 were investigated. An increase in the channel doping results in the improved dc characteristics, higher cutoff, and maximum oscillation frequencies, and reduced low frequency and microwave noise. The obtained results demonstrate that the dc and microwave performance characteristics of short-channel GaN MESFETs may be comparable to those for conventional AlGaN/GaN heterostructure FETs.

Transportation Research Center: Public Perception of Midwest Pavements

This report summarizes Minnesota results of a five year, Pooled Fund study involving the Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota DOTs designed to 1) assess the public's perceptions of the departments’ pavement improvement strategies and 2) to develop customer-based thresholds of satisfaction with pavements on rural two lane highways in each state as related to the Departments’ physical indices, such as pavement ride and condition. The primary objective was to seek systematic customer input to improve the Departments’ pavement improvement policies by 1) determining how drivers perceive the departments’ pavements in terms of comfort and convenience but also in terms of other …

What Is The Best Way To Draw A Cube? A Hypercube?, Brian D'Auriol, Vladik Kreinovich, Bindu George, Florence Muganda, Pramod Kumar Chikkpaiah Feb 2001

What Is The Best Way To Draw A Cube? A Hypercube?, Brian D'Auriol, Vladik Kreinovich, Bindu George, Florence Muganda, Pramod Kumar Chikkpaiah

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the possible connections between processors is a hypercube. The simplest case of a hypercube - a 4-vertex square - can be naturally represented on a 2-D page. To represent a 3-dimensional (or higher-dimensional) hypercube, we must project additional dimensions onto a 2-D page. In general, when we project a multi-D space into a 2-D plane, different points project into the same one. To get the best visualization, we must select a projection in such a way that the projections of different points are as distant from each other as possible. In this paper, we formalize and solve the …

On Fusion Of Soft And Hard Computing: Traditional ("Hard Computing") Optimal Rescaling Techniques Simplify Fuzzy Control, Hugh F. Vanlandingham, Vladik Kreinovich Feb 2001

On Fusion Of Soft And Hard Computing: Traditional ("Hard Computing") Optimal Rescaling Techniques Simplify Fuzzy Control, Hugh F. Vanlandingham, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main objectives of fuzzy control is to translate expert rules - formulated in imprecise ("fuzzy") words from natural language - into a precise control strategy. This translation is usually done is two steps. First, we apply a fuzzy control methodology to get a rough approximation to the expert's control strategy, and then we tune the resulting fuzzy control system. The first step (getting a rough approximation) is well-analyzed, and the fact that we have expert's intuitive understanding enables us to use soft computing techniques to perform this step. The second (tuning) step is much more difficult: we …

Direct Displacement‐Based Design: Use Of Inelastic Vs. Elastic Design Spectra, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel Feb 2001

Direct Displacement‐Based Design: Use Of Inelastic Vs. Elastic Design Spectra, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Direct displacement‐based design requires a simplified procedure to estimate the seismic deformation of an inelastic SDF system, representing the first (elastic) mode of vibration of the structure. This step is usually accomplished by analysis of an “equivalent” linear system using elastic design spectra. In this paper, an equally simple procedure is developed that is based on the well‐known concepts of inelastic design spectra. We demonstrate that the procedure provides the following: (1) accurate values of displacement and ductility demands, and (2) a structural design that satisfies the design criteria for allowable plastic rotation. In contrast, the existing procedure using elastic …

Another Look At Hartford Civic Center Coliseum Collapse, Rachel Martin, Norbert J. Delatte Feb 2001

Another Look At Hartford Civic Center Coliseum Collapse, Rachel Martin, Norbert J. Delatte

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Only a few hours after five thousand basketball fans had left, the roof of the Hartford Civic Center Coliseum collapsed under a heavy snowfall. Fortunately, the arena was empty. The design of the space frame roof had been based on an innovative and extensive computer analysis. However, when deflections twice as great as those predicted by the computer analysis were observed during construction, the warning was ignored. Overconfidence in computer analysis results played a large part in this failure. A useful lesson from this case is that the computer is only an analytical tool and computed results must be checked …

Fdtd And Experimental Investigation Of Emi From Stacked-Card Pcb Configurations, David M. Hockanson, Xiaoning Ye, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Richard E. Dubroff Feb 2001

Fdtd And Experimental Investigation Of Emi From Stacked-Card Pcb Configurations, David M. Hockanson, Xiaoning Ye, James L. Drewniak, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Richard E. Dubroff

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stacked-card and modules-on-backplane printed circuit-board geometries are advantageous for conserving real-estate in many designs. Unfortunately, at high frequencies, electromagnetic magnetic interference (EMI) resulting from the nonnegligible impedance of the signal return at the connector may occur. This effective EMI coupling path results in the daughtercard being driven against the motherboard and attached cables, resulting in common-mode radiation. The connector geometry can be modified to minimize the EMI coupling path when high frequencies are routed between the motherboard and daughtercard. Current speeds and printed circuit board (PCB) sizes result in geometries that are of significant dimensions in terms of a wavelength …

Modeling And Analysis Of The Electrokinetic Mass Transport And Adsorption Mechanisms Of A Charged Adsorbate In Capillary Electrochromatography Systems Employing Charged Nonporous Adsorbent Particles, B. A. Grimes, Athanasios I. Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mass-transfer systems based on electrokinetic phenomena (i.e., capillary electrochromatography (CEC)) have shown practical potential for becoming powerful separation methods for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. A dynamic mathematical model, consisting of the momentum balance and the Poisson equations, as well as the unsteady-state continuity expressions for the cation and anion of the background electrolyte and of a positively charged analyte (adsorbate), is constructed and solved to determine quantitatively the electroosmotic velocity, the electrostatic potential, the concentration profiles of the charged species in the double layer and in the electroneutral core region of the fluid in the interstitial channels for bulk …

This paper discusses the integration of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) with an energy storage system in damping power oscillations. The performance of the STATCOM, a self-commutated solid-state voltage inverter, can be improved with the addition of energy storage. In this study, a 100 MJ SMES coil is connected to the voltage source inverter front-end of a STATCOM via a DC-DC chopper. The dynamics of real and reactive power responses of the integrated system to system oscillations are studied using an electromagnetic transient program PSCAD TM /EMTDC TM and the findings are presented. The results show that, depending on the …

Incorporating Two-Port Networks With S-Parameters Into Fdtd, Xiaoning Ye, James L. Drewniak

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A modeling approach for incorporating a two-port network with S-parameters in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is reported in this paper. The proposed method utilizes the time-domain Y-parameters to describe the network characteristics, and incorporates the Y-parameters into the FDTD algorithm. The generalized pencil-of-function (GPOF) technique is applied to improve the memory efficiency of this algorithm by generating a complex exponential series for the Y-parameters and using recursive convolution in the FDTD updating equations. A modeling example is given, which shows that this approach is effective and accurate. This modeling technique can be extended for incorporating any number of N-port …

Tilted Bilayer Membranes As Simple Transmission Quarter-Wave Retardation Plates, R. M.A. Azzam, Fadi A. Mahmoud Feb 2001

Tilted Bilayer Membranes As Simple Transmission Quarter-Wave Retardation Plates, R. M.A. Azzam, Fadi A. Mahmoud

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

A tilted bilayer membrane, which consists of two thin films of transparent optically isotropic materials of different refractive indices, can function as a transmission quarter-wave retarder (QWR) at a high angle of incidence. A specific design using a cryolite-Si membrane in the infrared is presented, and its tolerances to small shifts of wavelength, incidence angle, and film thickness errors are discussed. Some designs provide a dual QWR in transmission and reflection. Such devices provide simple linear-to-circular (and circular-to-linear) polarization transformers. Bilayer eighth-wave retarders without diattenuation are also introduced.
