Background. Understanding the total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) hemodynamics may lead to improved surgical procedures which result in a more efficient modified circulation. Reduced energy loss will translate to less work for the single ventricle and although univentricular physiology is complex, this improvement could contribute to improved postoperative outcomes. Therefore to conserve energy, one surgical goal is optimization of the TCPC geometry. In line with this goal, this study investigated whether addition of caval curvature or flaring at the connection conserves energy.
Methods. TCPC models were made varying the curvature of the caval inlet or by flaring the anastomosis. …

Mechanical testing and surface fractography were used to characterize the fracture of E-glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites as a function of the silane coupling agent used. gamma-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) and delta-aminobutyltriethoxysilane (ABS) were used because these have been shown to have different interfacial mobilities at multilayer coverage. The values of the properties studied generally increased from untreated c, as determined from a Mode I translaminar fracture toughness tests, for the untreated composites (10.5 ± 0.4 kJ/m2) was lower than that for the ABS-treated composites (14.3 ± 2.1 kJ/m2) which was lower than that for the APS-treated composites (17.1 ± 2.4 kJ/m2). …
Suppression Of Post-Buckling Deflection And Panel-Flutter Using Shape Memory Alloy, Mohammad Tawfik Abo El So-Oud
Suppression Of Post-Buckling Deflection And Panel-Flutter Using Shape Memory Alloy, Mohammad Tawfik Abo El So-Oud
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A novel concept proposed is the use of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) to reduce the panel thermal deflection and flutter responses. SMA has unique ability to recover large prestrains completely when the alloy is heated (by aerodynamic heating in the present case) above the austenite start temperature As. During the recovery process, a large tensile recovery stress occurs if the SMA is restrained.
In this thesis, a panel subject to the combined aerodynamic and thermal loading is investigated. A nonlinear finite element model based on von Karman strain displacement relation is utilized to study the effectiveness of SMA …
An Improved Thermal Mass Flow Controller For Hazardous And Precision Applications, William J. Alvesteffer
An Improved Thermal Mass Flow Controller For Hazardous And Precision Applications, William J. Alvesteffer
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A new mass flow controller has been designed which responds very rapidly to changes in control settings. The design was evolved after carefully studying the internal flow and the sources for thermal lag and other non-linear behavior. After discussing an overview of the basic mass flow controller operating principles, data will be presented which characterize the basic building blocks of an advanced flow sensor design. Subsequently, a flow model and control strategy have been developed and tested which reduce response lag significantly. Results of the new design, obtained experimentally under various transient conditions, will be discussed.

A poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) diblock copolymer having a number-average molecular weight ((M) over bar(n)) of 11000 g/mol in the PEO blocks and an (M) over bar(n) of 5200 g/mol in the PS blocks has been synthesized (with a volume fraction of the PEO blocks of 0.66 in the molten state). Differential scanning calorimetry results show that this copolymer possesses a single endotherm, which is attributed to the melting of the PEG-block crystals. Based on real-time resolved synchrotron small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) observations, the diblock copolymer is in a disordered state above the glass transition temperature of the PS-rich phase (T-g(PS)) …

Rhythmic Growth Of Target And Spiral Spherulites Of Crystalline Polymer Blends, Thein Kyu, Hw Chiu, Aj Guenthner, Y Okabe, H Saito, T Inoue
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
Numerical calculations reveal that the target and spiral growth patterns in spherulites can be generated from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations (model C) by coupling a conserved compositional order parameter and a nonconserved crystal ordering parameter. Of particular interest is that the periodic concentric rings (target) or the spirals at the spherulitic core remain stationary in both the crystal (orientational) ordering field and the concentration field. Another intriguing observation is that the growth of target and spiral spherulites occurs in a stepwise fashion in synchronism with the rhythmic energy dissipation during crystallization.

The Internet Name Game And The Nonprofit Solution, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper is a case study of the campaign to create a new internet names authority to handle the assignment of internet domain names. Almost everyone knows by now that the Internet was originally a defense research project, which morphed into a research network for scientists and then into a tool of higher education and eventually into the commercial and general household utility we know today. In terms familiar to nonprofit research community what began in the state sector, expanded into the third sector and then into the market and household sectors and the consumer economy. There is a second …

Long-Term Aircraft Structural Integrity Prediction Under The Influence Of Feedback Control, Si-Bok Yu
Long-Term Aircraft Structural Integrity Prediction Under The Influence Of Feedback Control, Si-Bok Yu
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates the influence of feedback control, and other factors associated with loading characteristics, on fatigue damage reduction and long-term integrity of aircraft structural components. An actively controlled flexible aircraft model and a new state space modeling procedure for crack growth are utilized to uncover important factors which influence airframe crack growth. A matrix of simulation test cases is constructed to cover such variables as open-loop operation, nominal closed-loop operation, perturbed closed-loop operation (i.e., feedback gain variation), nominal maneuver profile, perturbed maneuver profile (including overload strength and frequency), atmospheric gust, and mean stress level. Simulation output data including crack …
Evaluation Of The Transport Properties Of Gasb For Bipolar Applications Through Monte Carlo Simulations, Damayanthi Palaniappan
Evaluation Of The Transport Properties Of Gasb For Bipolar Applications Through Monte Carlo Simulations, Damayanthi Palaniappan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
GaAs is currently the semiconductor material of choice for high speed, low power applications. Its electronic transport properties are superior to almost all other semiconductors. It is also used in a variety of bipolar applications such as photodetectors and photo-mixers. However, as is well known, the hole mobility and related transport parameters of GaAs are not very good. This is a serious drawback, and poses a potential problem for all applications involving bipolar conductivity. In order to increase the high :frequency limits and high-speed capability of bipolar devices, the choice of an alternative material, therefore, becomes necessary. An important first …
Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz
Application Of A Fiber-Reinforced Continuum Theory To Multiple Deformations Of The Annulus Fibrosus, Stephen M. Klisch, Jeffrey C. Lotz
Mechanical Engineering
Accurate tissue stress predictions for the annulus fibrosus are essential for understanding the factors that cause or contribute to disc degeneration and mechanical failure. Current computational models used to predict in vivo disc stresses utilize material laws for annular tissue that are not rigorously validated against experimental data. Consequently, predictions of disc stress resulting from physical activities may be inaccurate and therefore unreliable as a basis for defining mechanical–biologic injury criteria. To address this need we present a model for the annulus as an isotropic ground substance reinforced with two families of collagen fibers, and an approach for determining the …
A Pressure Transducer Using Field Emitter Arrays, Mark David Richmond
A Pressure Transducer Using Field Emitter Arrays, Mark David Richmond
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A new pressure sensing device using field emission from diamond coated silicon tips has been developed. A high electric field applied between a nano-tip array and a diaphragm configured as electrodes produces electron emission governed by the Fowler - Nordheim equation. The electron emission is very sensitive to the separation between the diaphragm and the tips, which is fixed at an initial spacing and bonded such that a cavity is created between them. Pressure applied to the diaphragm decreases the spacing between the electrodes, thereby increasing the number of electrons emitted.
Silicon has been used as a substrate on which …

Theory Of Photon Coincidence Statistics In Photon-Correlated Beams, Majeed M. Hayat, Sergio N. Torres, Leno M. Pedrotti
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The statistics of photon coincidence counting in photon-correlated beams is thoroughly investigated considering the effect of the finite coincidence resolving time. The correlated beams are assumed to be generated using parametric downconversion, and the photon streams in the correlated beams are modeled by two partially correlated Poisson point processes. An exact expression for the mean rate of coincidence registration is developed using techniques from renewal theory. It is shown that the use of the traditional approximate rate, in certain situations, leads to the overestimation of the actual rate. The error between the exact and approximate coincidence rates increases as the …

A Generic Object-Oriented Random Variate Model For Discrete Event Simulations Separating The Data Model From The Process Model, Palathingal Frank
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Data is the lifeline of any simulation model. The validity of the data is a primary determining factor on the accuracy of a simulation. Hence the data model is an important part of any simulation model. But this is, in most occasions, the most neglected part of any model. Most people view the model correctness in te1ms of the process model functionality rather than the data that is being used in the simulation. As simulation gets more accepted as a reliable problem-solving tool, it is increasingly important to pay careful attention to the accuracy of the simulation and that can …

Optical Gain Measurements Based On Fundamental Properties And Comparison With Many-Body Theory, T. Keating, S. H. Park, J. Minch, Xiaomin Jin, Shun-Lien Chuang, T. Tanbun-Ek
Electrical Engineering
We present high accuracy measurements of gain, loss, and transparency energy in long-wavelength semiconductors based on a hybrid approach using the fundamental relationship between the gain and the spontaneous emission spectra. Independent measurements of optical gain, transparency energy, and loss show the accuracy and validity of this technique. These results are compared with those obtained by the non-Markovian gain model with many-body effects under the spontaneous emission transformation method. It is found that the hybrid approach for the gain spectrum alleviates many of the problems related to the poor signal to noise ratio in the amplified-spontaneous emission near and below …

In this paper we present an AI-based approach for the discovery of design methodologies for multi-disciplinary design situations. The approach is based on simulating the design process using a multi-agent system that mimics the behavior of the design team. The system activates the pieces of design knowledge when they become applicable. The use of knowledge by agents is recorded by tracing the steps that the agents have taken during a design project. Many traces are generated by solving a large number of design projects that differ in their requirements. A set of design methodologies is constructed by using clustering techniques …

The Mechtech Program: An Education And Training Model For The Next Century, Robert Forrant
New England Journal of Public Policy
The small-firm metalworking industry is routinely characterized by cutthroat competition and fierce privacy. Yet, since the late 1980s, the members of the western Massachusetts chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association have participated in an education, training, and technology diffusion network characterized by a high degree of interfirm cooperation. Hundreds of workers and managers have take part in group training sessions and seminars. The reconstruction of the skill base is central to the MechTech apprenticeship program through which apprentices spend four years in participating firms, exiting the program as licensed machinists, tool and die makers, or moldmakers. In an …

Quantification Of Pulmonary Arterial Wall Distensibility Using Parameters Extracted From Volumetric Micro-Ct Images, Roger H. Johnson, Kelly Lynn Karau, Robert C. Molthen, Christopher A. Dawson
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Stiffening, or loss of distensibility, of arterial vessel walls is among the manifestations of a number of vascular diseases including pulmonary arterial hypertension. We are attempting to quantify the mechanical properties of vessel walls of the pulmonary arterial tree using parameters derived from high-resolution volumetric x-ray CT images of rat lungs. The pulmonary arterial trees of the excised lungs are filled with a contrast agent. The lungs are imaged with arterial pressures spanning the physiological range. Vessel segment diameters are measured from the inlet to the periphery, and distensibilities calculated from diameters as a function of pressure. The method shows …

Optical Spray Painting Practice And Training System, Richard J. Klein Ii
Optical Spray Painting Practice And Training System, Richard J. Klein Ii
Patents (University of Northern Iowa)
An optical spray painting practice gun emits a shaped optical beam onto a practice surface to simulate an actual paint spray on the surface. The gun preferably uses a class 2 diode laser to generate a laser beam which is reshaped by a collimating lens into a diverging beam that illuminates the practice surface. The collimating lens creates an elongated image on the practice surface having a length corresponding linearly to the distance of the practice gun nozzle to the practice surface as with a conventional spray gun. The illuminated image distorts when the practice gun is not perpendicular to …

Issues regarding the use of optical fiber thermometers to control heater settings in a microgravity vacuum furnace are addressed. It is desirable to use these probes in environments such as the International Space Station, because they can be operated without re-calibration for extended periods. However, the analysis presented in this paper shows that temperature readings obtained using optical fiber thermometers can be corrupted by emissions from the fiber when extended portions of the probe are exposed to elevated temperatures.

Charge Fluctuations In Yba2cu3o7-X High-Temperature Superconductors, Herbert A. Mook, Fatih Dogan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Understanding the behavior of the electrons in the high-temperature copper oxide superconductors remains a challenging problem. An important class of models1,2,3,4,5 argues that the distribution of electronic charge and spin is not homogeneous: rather, spin and charge adopt a dynamic arrangement in which the spins on the copper form antiferromagnetic stripes, separated by domain walls containing the charge1,2,3,4,5. The dynamic behavior of the spins has been extensively studied by neutron scattering, and recent results have shown that the low-frequency fluctuations for different classes of materials display a universal spatial behavior that is consistent with the stripe picture. But arguments for …

Theoretical And Experimental Investigation On The Low Temperature Properties Of The Nbcr2 Laves Phase, Dan J. Thoma, Chu Fuming, Katherine C. Chen, Paul G. Kotula, Terence E. Mitchell, John M. Wills, Alim Ormeci, Shao Ping Chen, Robert C. Albers
Materials Engineering
This is the final report of a three-year, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The goal of the project was to develop methodologies in which to define and improve the properties of NbCr2 so that the high temperature structural applications of alloys based upon this would not be limited by the low-temperature brittle behavior of the intermetallic. We accomplished this task by (1) understanding the defect structure and deformation mechanisms in Laves phases, (2) electronic and geometric contributions to phase stability and alloying behavior, and (3) novel processing of dual phase (Laves/bcc) …
Implementation And Performance Of Error Correction Codes For High-Speed Computer Networks, Jochen Spengler
Implementation And Performance Of Error Correction Codes For High-Speed Computer Networks, Jochen Spengler
Dissertations and Theses
During the transmission of data there is always a possibility that errors occur and some pieces are modified. If the receiver detects an error it either sends a request for retransmission or, like in networks using Ethernet, it does not send an acknowledgment for the erroneous frame. In this case the sender waits a certain time and retransmits the frame. With the development of faster computer networking hardware and the need for more real-time applications, these errors have become a major concern. Long retransmission latencies and the need for large memories for buffering drive the development of more reliable network …
