Design And Construction Of A Mobile Laboratory For Distance Learning In Engineering Technology, Alok K. Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

The design and construction of a mobile laboratory to be used in conjunction with the televised program in Mechanical Engineering Technology Program at Old Dominion University is discussed. The aim of this program is to offer educational opportunities to individuals currently employed with an associate degree. The merit of the concept lies in the fact that it offers a cost effective way to provide a laboratory for multiple sites. Currently, the concept is being tested for two instructional areas, such as fluid mechanics and automatic controls.

Thin layers of Cu/Al/Se/Al/Cu/Al/Se/…/Al/Se sequentially deposited have been annealed half an hour at 855 K. CuAlSe2 thin films crystallized in the chalcopyrite structure are obtained. The films being contaminated by oxygen, the experimental deposition conditions of the aluminum layer have been improved in order to decrease the atomic concentration of oxygen below 5 at%. Such results can be obtained in vacuum of 10-4 Pa, when the aluminum deposition rate is 1 nm/s and when the layer is immediately covered after deposition. Films obtained in such a way are nearly stoichiometric with lattice parameters in accordance with the expected …

Dynamic Modeling Of Pwm And Single-Switch Single-Stage Power Factor Correction Converters, Guangyong Zhu Jan 1999

Dynamic Modeling Of Pwm And Single-Switch Single-Stage Power Factor Correction Converters, Guangyong Zhu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The concept of averaging has been used extensively in the modeling of power electronic circuits to overcome their inherent time-variant nature. Among various methods, the PWM switch modeling approach is most widely accepted in the study of closed-loop stability and transient response because of its accuracy and simplicity. However, a non-ideal PWM switch model considering conduction losses is not available except for converters operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM) and under small ripple conditions. Modeling of conductor losses under large ripple conditions has not been reported in the open literature, especially when the converter operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). …

Double-Talk Robust Fast Converging Algorithms For Network Echo Cancellation, T. Gansler, Steven L. Grant, J. Benesty, M. M. Sondhi Jan 1999

Double-Talk Robust Fast Converging Algorithms For Network Echo Cancellation, T. Gansler, Steven L. Grant, J. Benesty, M. M. Sondhi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Echo cancelers which cover longer impulse responses (greater than or equal to 64 ms) are desirable. Long responses create a need for more rapidly converging algorithms in order to meet the specifications for network echo cancelers devised by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union). In general, faster convergence implies a higher sensitivity to near-end disturbances, especially "double-talk". Recently, a fast converging algorithm called proportionate NLMS (normalized least mean squares) algorithm (PNLMS) has been proposed. This algorithm exploits the sparseness of the echo path. In this paper we propose a method for making the PNLMS algorithm more robust against double-talk. The slower …

This paper investigates integrating power engineering material over the breadth of an electrical engineering curriculum. Electrical engineering curricula have a large number of required courses and many subareas for students to study. By introducing power concepts in a variety of courses, students may be motivated to take additional courses in the power area and are better prepared for the diverse background which will be required of them as practising power engineers. The important interrelationships between subareas of electrical engineering are better understood by students when cross discipline applications are discussed. This paper describes the introduction of power concepts and applications …

Physical And Technical Bases Of Using Ferromagnetic Resonance In Hexagonal Ferrites For Electromagnetic Compatibility Problems, Marina Koledintseva, Alexander A. Kitaytsev

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Frequency-selective measurement of microwave signal parameters based on application of gyromagnetic converters has proven advantageous for the research of microwave radiation over a wide spectrum (several octaves) in multisignal regime in microwave path and for the solution of a number of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) problems. The measurement frequency band can be enlarged to millimeter-waves with application of monocrystal hexagonal ferrite resonators (HFR) having high internal magnetic fields. Millimeter-wave field interactions with the HFR having alternating resonance frequency are analyzed. This is useful for millimeter-wave signal modulation and demodulation. The analysis is based on the solution of magnetization vector motion equation …

Speaker Identification Using A Combination Of Different Parameters As Feature Inputs To An Artificial Neural Network Classifier, Viresh Moonasar, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a technique using artificial neural networks (ANNs) for speaker identification that results in a better success rate compared to other techniques. The technique used in this paper uses both power spectral densities (PSDs) and linear prediction coefficients (LPCs) as feature inputs to a self organizing feature map to achieve a better identification performance. Results for speaker identification with different methods are presented and compared.

A Robust Artificial Neural Network Controller For A Turbogenerator When Line Configuration Changes, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the design of a robust controller for a turbogenerator. The robust controller is an artificial neural network (ANN) that is trained offline on a family of ANN models of the turbogenerator. This ANN controller augments/replaces the traditional automatic voltage controller (AVR) and the turbine governor of the generator. Simulation results are presented to show that the ANN controller is robust when the transmission line configuration changes.

Short-Term Generation Asset Valuation, Chung-Li Tseng, G. Barz Jan 1999

Short-Term Generation Asset Valuation, Chung-Li Tseng, G. Barz

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a method for valuing a power plant over a short term period using Monte Carlo simulation. The power plant valuation problem is formulated as a multi stage stochastic problem. We assume there are hourly markets for both electricity and the fuel used by the generator, and their prices follow some Ito processes. At each hour, the power plant operator must decide to run or not to run the unit so as to maximize expected profit. A certain lead time for commitment decision is necessary to start up a unit. The commitment decision, once made, is subject to physical …

Analysis Of A Novel Four-Level Dc/Dc Boost Converter, Keith Corzine, Sonal K. Majeethia Jan 1999

Analysis Of A Novel Four-Level Dc/Dc Boost Converter, Keith Corzine, Sonal K. Majeethia

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, novel two-quadrant buck/boost and one-quadrant boost four-level DC/DC converters are introduced. The primary application for these converters is that of interfacing a low voltage DC source, such as a fuel cell or battery, to a high-voltage four-level inverter. One important feature of the four-level DC/DC converters proposed herein is the ability to perform the power conversion and balance the inverter capacitor voltages simultaneously. With the capacitor voltage balancing, it is possible to obtain the full voltage from the inverter. For the boost converter, the steady-state and nonlinear average-value (NLAM) models are developed. The NLAM is verified against …

Integrated Manufacturing System For Precision Press Tooling, S. Chaturvedi, Venkat Allada Jan 1999

Integrated Manufacturing System For Precision Press Tooling, S. Chaturvedi, Venkat Allada

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The press tooling industry, characterized by many small-scale job-shops, is facing an increasingly competitive global market. This comes at a time when there is a shortage of experienced process planners and unavailability of affordable CAD/CAM systems that could provide an integrated solution for manufacturing sheet metal tooling. Many commercially available CAD/CAM systems are either too expensive or too narrow in scope, in the sense that they provide only point solutions. The design of press tools and its manufacturing functions are highly specialized and knowledge-intensive in nature. This paper presents a framework and the implementation details of an integrated system that …

Mössbauer Effect Determination Of Relative Recoilless Fractions For Iron Oxides, Sei J. Oh, Desmond C. Cook Jan 1999

Mössbauer Effect Determination Of Relative Recoilless Fractions For Iron Oxides, Sei J. Oh, Desmond C. Cook

Physics Faculty Publications

The relative recoilless fraction (F-value) of each of six iron oxides, defined as the ratio of the recoil-free fractions of two different materials, was experimentally determined relative to hematite at 300 K and 77 K by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Using the relative recoil-free fractions compared to that of hematite, the relative recoilless fractions between all pairs of the seven iron oxides were determined. The F-values can allow conversion of Mössbauer subspectral areas to the relative atomic, molecular, or weight fractions of each iron oxide present in a mixed oxide phase sample.

Structural Disorder And The Origin Of High-Tc Suppression In La₁.₈₇₅Ba₀.₁₂₅ Cuo4−Δ, Daniel Haskel, Edward A. Stern, Fatih Dogan, Arnie R. Moodenbaugh

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polarized x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at all La, Ba and Cu sites were used to study local structural features that accompany the strong Tc suppression at: r,,, 1/8 in La2BaCuO4. Two critical parameters regulating the strength of hole-lattice coupling in this material were determined, ie, the direction and magnitude of CuO6 octahedra local tilts. Our findings include the existence of large disorder in the magnitude of the tilt angle about its average value (0), with an rms~~ 2 (0). We suggest that this large disorder strongly scatters a large fraction of states at …

Influence Of Chemical Reactions In Magnesia-Graphite Refractories: I, Effects On Texture And High-Temperature Mechanical Properties, Carmen Baudín, Carlos Alvarez, Robert E. Moore

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Four formulations of magnesia-graphite-aluminum metal (antioxidant) bricks were prepared from the same raw materials, using the standard commercial practices. Chemical analysis and determination of room-temperature modulus of rupture and Young's modulus, as well as a complete microstructural characterization of the as-received materials, were performed. For high-temperature modulus-of-rupture and Young's modulus data, test samples of the four brick compositions were heated to 1000°, 1200°, and 1450 °C in flowing argon (< 1000 ppm oxygen at 1000 °C) and then loaded mechanically in flexure. Modulus-of-elasticity values ranged from 3.7 to 16.2 GPa and reflected strong effects of aluminum-metal concentration and treatment temperature. Young's modulus evolution with temperature was determined by the evolution of the micro-structure in the bulk of the specimens. Modulus-of-rupture values ranged from 6 to 21 MPa, and their evolution with temperature was determined by the evolution of the micro-structure in the bulk of the specimens at the lower testing temperatures (T≤1200 °C) and by phase assemblages in the surface regions of the specimens - essentially by the presence of the dense MgO zone - at 1450 °C.

Influence Of Chemical Reactions In Magnesia-Graphite Refractories: Ii, Effects Of Aluminum And Graphite Contents In Generic Products, Carmen Baudín, Carlos Alvarez, Robert E. Moore

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A group of magnesia-graphite and magnesia-graphite-aluminum materials, the compositions of which represent a wide range of graphite contents (approximately 10-16.4 wt.%), aluminum contents (0-5.2 wt.%), and MgO and graphite qualities, were fabricated, using standard commercial practices. Chemical analysis and determination of room-temperature modulus of rupture (MOR) and Young's modulus, as well as a complete microstructural characterization of the as-received materials, were performed. Mechanical characterization at high temperature (1000°, 1200°, and 1450 °C) was done in terms of Young's modulus and MOR in an argon atmosphere (°C). Modulus-of-elasticity values ranged from 4 to 16 GPa, and their evolution with temperature was …

Copper Nucleation On Titanium For Thin Film Applications, A. J.B. Dutra, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Copper nucleation and growth on titanium substrates from concentrated acidic copper sulfate solutions was studied at 45 and 65 °C and high cathodic potentials. Electrochemical experiments allied to SEM examination were performed to characterize the mechanism of nucleation and its evolution with time. Particular emphasis was given to the influence of potential and agitation on the initial stages of nucleation and growth. Results indicated that most of copper nucleation on titanium from a 83 g dm-3 Cu2+ solution, at 65 °C, is achieved in a matter of milliseconds. As expected, the initial stages of the copper nucleation and growth is …

A Biologically Inspired Connectionist Model For Image Feature Extraction In 2d Pattern Recognition, Cihan H. Dagli, Raymond K. Chafin

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new edge detection method is presented which borrows from recent research into primate vision biology, and offers improved noise performance over classical methods. Beginning with spatio-temporal shunting models for retinal cones, horizontal cells, bipolar cells, and retinal ganglions, a set of simplified steady-state solutions are developed which lend themselves to efficient computation on standard computer equipment. The retinal model output is found to be nominally equivalent to the classical edge detector, but is produced differently. A simplified model of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) has been produced. Taking the output of the retinal model, the LGN simple cell and …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Titanium dioxide ceramics (TiO2) are candidate materials for high energy density pulsed power devices. Experiments to quantify the dielectric strength of TiO2 have been performed on a limited number of unoptimized samples. A high voltage test set was constructed to test the titanium dioxide. All samples had a relative dielectric constant of 100, all samples were of 3 mm nominal thickness, and all tests were performed in water dielectric to reduce the effect of the triple point field enhancement at the electrode edge. Both single layer and laminated samples were tested and the breakdown field strengths were recorded. Voltage risetimes …

Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flexible Wings Using The Euler Equations On Unstructured Grids, Arunkumar Satyanarayana Jan 1999

Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flexible Wings Using The Euler Equations On Unstructured Grids, Arunkumar Satyanarayana

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Aeroelasticity is a classical discipline. However, even with recent advancement in computational technology, it still remains a challenging discipline. This is particularly true when aeroelasticity problems are solved in a loosely coupled manner. The advantage of a loosely coupled scheme is that the legacy codes of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural mechanics (CSM) can be preserved and used as independent modules in solving the desired aeroelasticity problems. In such a scheme, maintaining proper data transfer (load transfer and deformation tracking between CFD and CSM codes) is crucial in ensuring successful coupled solutions. This can be a challenging task …

Use Of Transforms For Indexing In Audio Databases, S. R. Subramanya, Abdou Youssef, Bhagirath Narahari, Rahul Simha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The phenomenal increases in the amounts of audio data being generated, processed and used in several computer applications have necessitated the development of audio database systems with newer features, such as content-based queries and similarity searches, to manage and use such data. Fast and accurate retrieval for content-based queries is crucial in order for such systems to be useful. Efficient content-based indexing and similarity searching schemes are keys to providing fast and relevant data retrieval. This paper studies and evaluates the different parameters involved in an indexing scheme which uses transforms (as used in signal processing) for generating the audio …

In-Clip Search Algorithm For Content-Based Audio Retrieval, Punpiti Piamsa-Nga, Nikitas A. Alexandridis, Sanan Srakaew, George C. Blankenship, S. R. Subramanya

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Researchers are currently more interested in searching for fragments that are similar to a query, than a total data item that is similar to a query; the search interest is for "contains", not "is". The paper presents an O(logn) algorithm, called the "generalized virtual node (GVN)" algorithm; the GVN algorithm is a search algorithm for data fragments that have similar contents to that of a query. An example of the use of the GVN algorithm is in the search of a database of audio recordings for a few measures of a melody. Each audio clip is transformed into characteristic features …

Adaptive Critic Based Neural Networks For Control-Constrained Agile Missile Control, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 1999

Adaptive Critic Based Neural Networks For Control-Constrained Agile Missile Control, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the use of an `adaptive critic' based controller to steer an agile missile with a constraint on the angle of attack from various initial Mach numbers to a given final Mach number in minimum time while completely reversing its flightpath angle. We use neural networks with a two-network structure called `adaptive critic' to carry out the optimization process. This structure obtains an optimal controller through solving Hamiltonian equations. This approach needs no external training; each network along with the optimality equations generates the output for the other network. When the outputs are mutually consistent, the controller output is …

Mechanics Of Cpr Performed With The Patient On A Soft Bed Versus A Hard Surface, John M. Boe, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To study the effects of underlying bed softness versus stiffness on the effectiveness of chest compressions in CPR. Methods: For a wide range of bed stiffness constants, mathematical models describing compression of the human chest supported by a hospital bed were created for an adult thorax experiencing either a sinusoidal compressive force or a sinusoidal sternal displacement. Results: With 5 cm peak displacement, sternum-to-spine compression fell from 4.3 to 1.0 cm, and peak power fell from 59 to 23 Watts, as bed stiffness decreased from 50,000 to 5,000 N/m. Less than 35% of maximal chest compression occurred at a …

Flexible Pavement Drainage Monitoring, Performance, And Stability, Aiwen Feng, Jianfeng Hua, Thomas D. White Jan 1999

Flexible Pavement Drainage Monitoring, Performance, And Stability, Aiwen Feng, Jianfeng Hua, Thomas D. White

JTRP Technical Reports

The current study is a continuation of the study FHWA/IN/JTRP project HPR-2078, “Locating the Drainage Layer for Flexible Pavements”. In this previous study, three test sections were constructed in a new pavement on a by-pass around Fort Wayne, Indiana. These test sections were instrumental to record temperatures, moisture, frost penetration, rainfall and subdrainage system overflow. Collected data and Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis indicate the subdrainage systems are performing satisfactorily. However, concern developed over the stability and rutting characteristics of the open-graded drainage layers. As a continuation study, longer term environmental and subdrainage performance data was collected. Additional data was …

Landslide Remediation Using Unconventional Methods, Richard J. Deschamps, Cary B. Lange Jan 1999

Landslide Remediation Using Unconventional Methods, Richard J. Deschamps, Cary B. Lange

JTRP Technical Reports

Landslides are very common within the residual soils and sedimentary rock of Southern Indiana. A substantial amount of the Indiana State budget is spent on road repair and maintenance from damage caused by landslide. The landslide remedial technique frequently applied by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is the excavation and backfill method, which in most instances is successful. However, in many cases more liberal landslide treatments may be applied that would arrest movement, provide a sufficient safety factor, and at a lower cost. The objective of this study is to propose economically feasible landslide remedial methods that may be …

Pile Design Based On Cone Penetration Test Results, Rodrigo Salgado, Junhwan Lee Jan 1999

Pile Design Based On Cone Penetration Test Results, Rodrigo Salgado, Junhwan Lee

JTRP Technical Reports

The bearing capacity of piles consists of both base resistance and side resistance. The side resistance of piles is in most cases fully mobilized well before the maximum base resistance is reached. As the side resistance is mobilized early in the loading process, the determination of pile base resistance is a key element of pile design. Static cone penetration is well related to the pile loading process, since it is performed quasi-statically and resembles a scaled-down pile load test. In order to take advantage of the CPT for pile design, load-settlement curves of axially loaded piles bearing in sand were …
