Advanced Manufacturing Applications Of Cost Estimating Techniques For Metal Cutting Industries, Zubair Hamid
Advanced Manufacturing Applications Of Cost Estimating Techniques For Metal Cutting Industries, Zubair Hamid
Theses
In this work, different cost estimating techniques in metal cutting industry were studied. A basic understanding of estimation concepts were given. The typical breakdown of total cost was also given and discussed in details. Practical applications of cost estimating is studied. The effect of different parameters which relate to the lot sizes or quantity were discussed. All these results show that total cost is minimum at a point which is called least cost point, after that cost increases because of the addition of extra resources, in terms of man, machine and increase in administrative expenses.

Biodegradation Of Tnt (2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene), Jin Lou
Theses
This study summaries the results of various methods treating 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). Review of available literatures revealed that the most commonly used techniques in full-scale plant for TNT removal are chemical oxidation and carbon adsorption.
From economic point of view, the biological treatment system will be much more cost-effective. Various methods for improving the efficiency of biological system treating TNT wastewater were developed in the laboratory. Current laboratory results show that by isolating appropriate microorganisms under adequate conditions, TNT wastes can be degraded successfully.
At the some time, some pretreatment technologies are recommended in this study for improving the performance of …
Design For Manufacturability (Computer Aided Optimum Gear Design), Narayan R. Mareddy
Design For Manufacturability (Computer Aided Optimum Gear Design), Narayan R. Mareddy
Theses
Design for manufacturing has design as the first manufacturing step. It is important to recognize the importance of design clubing with manufacturing to reduce the production, set up time. In this thesis concepts of design, manufacturing and four different ways of bringing design and manufacturing together are discussed in detail.
As there are large number of variables in the gear rating equations, it is very difficult to achieve optimum design by manual methods unless an extensive trial and error process is carried out. An algorithm has been developed which allows rapid convergence to the optimum gear design. The algorithm has …
A Color Petri Net Simulation Tool, Sanjaykumar V. Desai
A Color Petri Net Simulation Tool, Sanjaykumar V. Desai
Theses
A user friendly, modular and highly interactive graphical tool for drawing, editing and simulating color Petri nets is developed. The tool is designed to model concurrent and interlocked systems, such as flexible manufacturing systems, communication protocols and computer systems. A Color Petri Net(CPN) has a more concise graphical system representation than a standard Petri net, because net entities in CPN carry information. The CPNS(Color Petri Net Simulation) tool simulates a net having conflicts, reveals deadlocks, and creates a log file with the state history of the system yielding performance measures.

Comparison Of Timing Jitter In External And Monolithic Cavity Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers, Dennis J. Derickson, P. A. Morton, J. E. Bowers, R. L. Thornton
Electrical Engineering
A comprehensive timing jitter comparison is made for mode-locked semiconductor lasers using active, passive, and hybrid mode-locking techniques in both external and monolithic cavity configurations. Active mode locking gives the lowest residual rms timing jitter of 65 fs (150 Hz-50 MHz), followed by the hybrid and passive mode-locking techniques. It is found that monolithic cavity devices with all active waveguides have higher timing jitter levels than the comparable external cavity case.
Limits Of Limit Equilibrium And Finite Element Techniques Applied To Cracked Debris Dams On Collapsing Foundations, Stanley Soliday Jr.
Limits Of Limit Equilibrium And Finite Element Techniques Applied To Cracked Debris Dams On Collapsing Foundations, Stanley Soliday Jr.
Dissertations and Theses
Limits of slope stability, limit equilibrium methods, and of the finite element code FEADAM are reached in the application of these methods to the problem of cracked dams constructed on collapsing soils.
Utilizing a generic dam, various classic slope stability approaches are tested as possible dam slope failure mechanisms. Slope stability methods are rejected as a way to accurately define and quantify the collapse problem. As a result of this work a block rotation mode of collapse is postulated. Then the finite element method (FEM) is used to try to define and quantify the collapse problem. The FEM is applied …
Ignoring Interprocessor Communication During Scheduling, Chintamani M. Patwardhan
Ignoring Interprocessor Communication During Scheduling, Chintamani M. Patwardhan
Dissertations and Theses
The goal of parallel processing is to achieve high speed computing by partitioning a program into concurrent parts, assigning them in an efficient way to the available processors, scheduling the program and then executing the concurrent parts simultaneously. In the past researchers have combined the allocation of tasks in a program and scheduling of those tasks into one operation. We define scheduling as a process of efficiently assigning priorities to the already allocated tasks in a program. Assignment of priorities is important in cases when more than one task at a processor is ready for execution. Most heuristics for scheduling …
A Multiple Coupled Microstrip Transmission Line Model For High-Speed Vlsi Interconnect Simulation, Lawrence Stevan Uzelac
A Multiple Coupled Microstrip Transmission Line Model For High-Speed Vlsi Interconnect Simulation, Lawrence Stevan Uzelac
Dissertations and Theses
A model is presented which incorporates the advantages of a mixed mode simulation to characterize transmission line behavior in multiple coupled Transmission line systems. The model is intended for use by digital circuit designers who wish to be able to obtain accurate transmission line behavior for complex digital systems for which continuous time simulation tools such as SPICE would be time prohibitive.
The model uses a transverse electromagnetic wave approximation to obtain solutions to the basic transmission line equations. A modal analysis technique is used to solve for the attenuation and propagation constants for the transmission lines. Modal analysis done …

A sensor having an interdigitated gate electrode field effect transistor (IGEFET) coupled to an electron beam evaporated copper phthalocyanine thin film is used to selectively detect parts-per-billion concentration levels of atmosphere contaminants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and diisopropyl methylphosphonate (DIMP). The sensor is excited with a voltage pulse, and its time- and frequency-domain response are examined. The envelopes of the magnitude of the normalized difference frequency spectrums reveal features which unambiguously distinguish the NO2 and DIMP exposures.
An Investigation Of Digital Microprocessor Algorithms In Active Suspension Systems, Toby L. Mcclellan
An Investigation Of Digital Microprocessor Algorithms In Active Suspension Systems, Toby L. Mcclellan
Graduate Research Papers
The need for knowledge and understanding of these systems at the technician level will increase dramatically as other manufacturers develop production systems in the 90's. Current technical literature on the subject of active and semi-active suspension systems does not well explain a major aspect of these systems, the origin and nature of the control algorithms used. A review of 30 articles and technical papers, and a title search of over 300 others discovered only 2 vague presentations of the actual control logic used in such systems. Furthermore, the control information that was printed was presented in terms of Laplace transforms …

his paper examines the potential of object-oriented databases to support complex design applications. To do this we migrated the Magic very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuit design tool written in the C language to a new environment in which Magic's existing file management code is replaced with a C++ language interface to the commercial object-oriented database management system (OODBMS) product Object Store. In our initial implementation we found the performance of this tool as implemented on the OODBMS to be marginally faster than the tool as currently implemented with a flat file system in several critical areas. Increased functionality, including …

Unsteady Flow In Vertical, Converging Tubes, Hamid Johari, William W. Durgin
Unsteady Flow In Vertical, Converging Tubes, Hamid Johari, William W. Durgin
Office of the Provost Scholarship
The discharge of liquids from vertical tubes with various contraction geometries was studied via the unsteady Bernoulli equation. The temporal variations of the exit velocity and fluid level in the tube were found from the numerical integration of nonlinear differential equations. Sudden, quadratic, and exponential contraction geometries were considered. For inlet to exit area ratios greater than two, the flow initially accelerates to a maximum speed and then it decelerates for the geometries studied. The exponential contraction has the shortest discharge time. The solutions also reveal that the largest possible velocity and the shortest discharge time are achieved in a …

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)
PREFACE During the past four years, two methods were developed for the design of stainless steel structural members at the University of Missouri-Rolla with consultation of Professor T. V. Galambos at the University of Minnesota. One of the methods is based on the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and the other is based on the allowable stress design (ASD). Both design methods are now included in the new ASCE Standard 8-90, Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members. At the September 21, 1990 meeting of the Control Group of the ASCE Stainless Steel Cold-Formed Section Standards …
Evaluation Of Torsional Provisions In Seismic Codes, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel
Evaluation Of Torsional Provisions In Seismic Codes, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The effects of plan asymmetry on the earthquake response of code-designed, one-story systems are identified with the objective of evaluating how well these effects are represented by torsional provisions in building codes. The earthquake-induced deformations and ductility demands on resisting elements of asymmetric-plan systems, designed according to several different codes, are compared with their values if the system plan were symmetric. The presented results demonstrate that the design eccentricity in building codes should be modified in order to achieve the desirable goal of similar ductility demands on asymmetric-plan and symmetric-plan systems. The design eccentricity should be defined differently for elastic …

Composite Damage Assessment Employing An Optical Neural Network Processor And An Embedded Fiberoptic Sensor Array, Barry G. Grossman, Xing Gao, Michael H. Thursby
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper discusses a novel approach for composite damage assessment with potential for DoD, NASA, and commercial applications. We have analyzed and modeled a two dimensional composite damage assessment system for real-time monitoring and determination of damage location in a composite structure. The system combines two techniques: a fiberoptic strain sensor array and an optical neural network processor. A two dimensional fiberoptic sensor array embedded in the composite structure during the manufacturing process can be used to detect changes in the mechanical strain distribution caused by subsequent damage to the structure. The optical processor, a pre-trained Kohonen neural network, has …

An Investigation Of The Floor Attachment Assembly Of A Large Transport Aircraft Seat Subjected To Crash Dynamic Loadings, Mark William Creager
An Investigation Of The Floor Attachment Assembly Of A Large Transport Aircraft Seat Subjected To Crash Dynamic Loadings, Mark William Creager
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
Accident investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the passenger seat and restraint systems found in today's aircraft used by the airlines are inadequate to protect the occupant in airplane crashes. Computer models were developed of the seat-track assembly and finite element analyses were performed subjected to crash dynamic loadings. The seat-track interface was modeled with gap elements to accurately model the geometric interaction between the track and seat-track fittings. Results showed large deformations and stresses above yielding in both the seat and track when subjected to accelerations prescribed for certification under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
High-Resolution Tvd Schemes For The Analysis Of 1. Inviscid Supersonic And Transonic Flows. 2. Viscous Flows With Shock-Induced Separation And Heat Transfer, Mark A. Driver
Theses and Dissertations
Application of TVD schemes to both inviscid and viscous flows is considered. The mathematical and physical bases of TVD schemes are discussed. First and second-order accurate TVD schemes and a second-order accurate Lax- Wendroff scheme are used to compute solutions to the Riemann problem in order to investigate the capability of each to resolve shocks, rarefactions, and contact surfaces. Second-order finite-volume and finite-difference TVD schemes are used to obtain solutions to inviscid supersonic and transonic cascade flow problems. TVD schemes are shown to be superior to the Lax-Wendroff family of schemes for both transient and steady-state computations. TVD methodology is …
Crack Growth Rate Modeling Of A Titanium-Aluminide Alloy Under Thermal-Mechanical Cycling, John J. Pernot
Crack Growth Rate Modeling Of A Titanium-Aluminide Alloy Under Thermal-Mechanical Cycling, John J. Pernot
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, a model is developed to predict crack growth rates in a titanium-aluminide alloy under thermal-mechanical fatigue (TMF). This TMF crack growth rate prediction model, which requires only isothermal data to define its parameters, is distinguished from earlier models in two ways. First, it accounts for mechanical-fatigue and environmental crack growth rate contributions while it also considers a retardation mechanism thought to be caused by creep blunting of the crack tip. This is the first study to account for such a retardation mechanism during TMF. The second uniqueness of the model is that its general form can account …
