The phenomenon of meteor burst communications is described and its mathematical model is presented. Protocols for meteors burst systems are outlined and examples are given of current use. Recent research in the area of coding performance in meteor burst systems is pointed out. The performance of several error control coding schemes for a meteor burst channel, including two new adaptive algorithms, are evaluated via analysis and simulation. These coding strategies are compared using the probability of successful transmission of a fixed size packet through a single burst as a performance measure. The goal of producing high quality computer programs brings with it the need for a set of quantitative measures that software engineers can use to measure various aspects of software quality. These quantitative measures, known as software metrics, can measure different aspects of program quality. For example, McCabe's Complexity Metric measures the decision structure of a computer program; Halstead's Software Science measures program "impurities II such as unfactored expressions and unnecessary replacements; and Vitro•s Module Coupling Metric measures data transfer characteristics between modules. Using only one of these metrics would not provide a well rounded measure of overall software quality. …

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) resonators are frequently used in UHF oscillator designs. SAW resonators are available in the 100 MHz - 1 GHz frequency range which eliminates the need for frequency multiplication necessary with Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) devices. As operating frequencies increase, circuit parasitics play a larger role in device performance. One important source of parasitics is the device package and associated interconnects. The dependence of the defect structure of Ca-doped YCrO₃ on oxygen activity and temperature was investigated by high temperature thermogravimetric measurements. Defect models developed from electrical conductivity data obtained in a previous study were used to interpret the thermogravimetric data. A correlation was found between the electrical conductivity and the thermogravimetric data which suggested that these data were concomitantly dependent on the acceptor dopant and oxygen vacancy dependance of the thermodynamic parameters. Kröger-Vink type diagrams showing the regions of stability with respect to oxygen activity and temperature were constructed. The TGA data show that Ca-doped YCrO₃ is even …

Two artificial neural network systems are considered in a hierarchical fashion to plan the trajectory and control of a robotic arm. At the higher level of the hierarchy the neural system consists of four networks: a restricted Coulomb energy network to delineate the robot arm workspace; two standard backpropagation (BP) networks for coordinates transformation; and a fourth network which also uses BP and participates in the trajectory planning by cooperating with other knowledge sources. A prototypical radiometer using standard one inch interference filters and a lead selenide detector was constructed for use in flame and rocket plume studies. This radiometer was designed to employ a 600 Hz chopper and chopper frequency/phase reference circuit for signal processing. Bandpass filters centered for either 2.7 mum or 4.45 mum were placed in the optical path. The passed carbon dioxide or water vapor band energy irradiated the lead selenide detector, resulting in an output voltage. This signal was then fed into a dedicated synchronous detector. In this paper, a mathematical programming and simulation method is used to estimate the number of weevils (Neochetina bruchi Hustache, and N. eichhorniae Warner) necessary to initialize the INSECT model which simulates the biological control of waterhyacinth by the weevils. The objective is to estimate the initial input values for the adult population so that the sum of the absolute differences between the observed and the simulated numbers of weevils is minimized. In general, the simulated values using the initial values obtained from the mathematical programming problem were within the 95% confidence intervals of the actual field observations. Also, in …

"An analytical model was developed in order to accurately estimate the dose rates in air of the highly-enriched uranium (HEU) fuel at the University of Missouri - Rolla Reactor. Based upon these results, a method is proposed to remove the fuel from the reactor.

First thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were exposed under water to each of the fuel elements in the reactor pool, except for the four control rodded elements. "The method of Stochastic Dynamic Programming is applied to the problem of Long-term hydrothermal coordination for a five-reservoir system in the Midwest. The model that has been developed will optimize the monthly reservoir elevations to produce the lowest expected energy production cost. The production cost calculations are decoupled from the Dynamic Programming loop, resulting in shorter execution times. Constraints are included for maximum and minimum reservoir elevations, maximum monthly reservoir rise and drop, and maximum and minimum monthly energy production. A new dataflow concept, Multiple Input Node is introduced to overcome the performance and efficiency degradation problems that exist in the current dataflow computation models where the computation unit, node, accepts 2 tokens at a time. Multiple Input Node is a new computation node which has 4 inputs, hence it can accept up to 4 token packets at a time. It can perform any simple arithmetic operation or combination of operations on these 4 input tokens. Salt-water ice was imaged in a 2Tesla, horizontal 310 mm bore NMR imaging system at 85 MHz. 50 mm diameter ice cylinders were placed in a temperature-controlled chamber in the NMR system and imaged at temperatures from −20° to 0°C. Paramagnetic Cu2SO4 at a low concentration was added to the solution, from which one ice sample was crystallized in order to decrease the NMR relaxation time of the entrapped brine in the ice cylinder and thereby speed up image acquisition.
