This thesis paper proposes an optimal relay placement approach for microgrids. The algorithm separately calculates the System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) of a microgrid in both grid-connected and islanded microgrid modes. The objective is to find the optimal relay locations such that the microgrid overall SAIFI is minimized. The power electronics interfaces associated with distributed energy resources may be classified as grid following or grid forming. As opposed to grid-following distributed energy resources (DERs) such as typical solar inverters, grid-forming inverters can control the microgrid voltage and frequency at the point of their interconnection. Grid-based electrical infrastructure is unavailable at many remote locations including developing nation communities, isolated construction sites, and military contingency bases. Powering these locations with diesel generators requires regular fuel resupply, resulting in increased costs, environmental impacts, and burdensome logistics—making generators an obstacle for energy resiliency and sustainability. This research examines using solar renewable energy systems to replace generators at remote locations and presents a multi-objective optimization model that minimizes logistics variables. Replacing a single deployed generator would save over 500,000 gal of fuel annually, eliminating the need for 100 fuel tanker deliveries.

The Two-on-One pursuit-evasion differential game is revisited where the holonomic players have equal speed, and the two pursuers are endowed with a circular capture range ℓ > 0. Then, the case where the pursuers' capture ranges are unequal, ℓ1 > ℓ2 ≥ 0, is analyzed. In both cases, the state space region where capture is guaranteed is delineated and the optimal feedback strategies are synthesized. In this dissertation, we address the optimal control and shape optimization of Wave Energy Converters. The wave energy converters considered in this study are the single-body heaving wave energy converters, and the two-body heaving wave energy converters. Different types of wave energy converters are modeled mathematically, and different optimal controls are developed for them. In recent years, scattering sensors to produce wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been proposed for detecting localized events in large areas. Because sensor measurements are noisy, the WSN needs to use statistical methods such as the scan statistic. Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a version of OA that develops after acute injury to the knee. PTOA is of particular interest because the disease can manifest earlier in life compared to primary OA. This thesis work introduces a novel multi-fidelity modeling framework, which is designed to address the practical challenges encountered in Aerospace vehicle design when 1) multiple low-fidelity models exist, 2) each low-fidelity model may only be correlated with the high-fidelity model in part of the design domain, and 3) models may contain noise or uncertainty. The proposed approach approximates a high-fidelity model by consolidating multiple low-fidelity models using the localized Galerkin formulation. Also, two adaptive sampling methods are developed to efficiently construct an accurate model. Compared to traditional systems, they deliver higher fuel efficiencies as waste heat from engine coolant and/or exhaust is recovered and utilized. In heating, ventilation, and air condi-tioning (HVAC) systems, the recycled heat may be used to provide space heating, water heating, and cooling (through absorption chillers). Production of dimethyl ether (DME) and direct non-oxidative methane dehydroaromatization (DHA) to aromatics via conventional and microwave (MW)-assisted processes are investigated in this research. Plant-wide models of the shale gas to DME process with integrated CO2 capture via direct and indirect synthesis routes have been developed.
