Target Control Of Networked Systems, Isaac S. Klickstein
Target Control Of Networked Systems, Isaac S. Klickstein
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
The control of complex networks is an emerging field yet it has already garnered interest from across the scientific disciplines, from robotics to sociology. It has quickly been noticed that many of the classical techniques from controls engineering, while applicable, are not as illuminating as they were for single systems of relatively small dimension. Instead, properties borrowed from graph theory provide equivalent but more practical conditions to guarantee controllability, reachability, observability, and other typical properties of interest to the controls engineer when dealing with large networked systems. This manuscript covers three topics investigated in detail by the author: (i) the …
Optimal Relay Location In A Microgrid Using Optimization Techniques, Benjamin J. Reimer
Optimal Relay Location In A Microgrid Using Optimization Techniques, Benjamin J. Reimer
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This thesis paper proposes an optimal relay placement approach for microgrids. The algorithm separately calculates the System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) of a microgrid in both grid-connected and islanded microgrid modes. The objective is to find the optimal relay locations such that the microgrid overall SAIFI is minimized. The power electronics interfaces associated with distributed energy resources may be classified as grid following or grid forming. As opposed to grid-following distributed energy resources (DERs) such as typical solar inverters, grid-forming inverters can control the microgrid voltage and frequency at the point of their interconnection. Therefore, these DERs can facilitate …

Golng Off The Grid: Optimizing Solar Renewable Energy Systems At Remote Locations To Minimize Logistics Requirements, Increase Sustainability, And Strengthen Energy Assurance, Nathanael J. Thomsen
Golng Off The Grid: Optimizing Solar Renewable Energy Systems At Remote Locations To Minimize Logistics Requirements, Increase Sustainability, And Strengthen Energy Assurance, Nathanael J. Thomsen
Theses and Dissertations
Grid-based electrical infrastructure is unavailable at many remote locations including developing nation communities, isolated construction sites, and military contingency bases. Powering these locations with diesel generators requires regular fuel resupply, resulting in increased costs, environmental impacts, and burdensome logistics—making generators an obstacle for energy resiliency and sustainability. This research examines using solar renewable energy systems to replace generators at remote locations and presents a multi-objective optimization model that minimizes logistics variables. Replacing a single deployed generator would save over 500,000 gal of fuel annually, eliminating the need for 100 fuel tanker deliveries.
An Analytic Study Of Pursuit Strategies, Mark E. Vlassakis
An Analytic Study Of Pursuit Strategies, Mark E. Vlassakis
Theses and Dissertations
The Two-on-One pursuit-evasion differential game is revisited where the holonomic players have equal speed, and the two pursuers are endowed with a circular capture range ℓ > 0. Then, the case where the pursuers' capture ranges are unequal, ℓ1 > ℓ2 ≥ 0, is analyzed. In both cases, the state space region where capture is guaranteed is delineated and the optimal feedback strategies are synthesized. Next, pure pursuit is considered whereupon the terminal separation between a pursuer and an equal-speed evader less than the pursuer's capture range ℓ > 0. The case with two pursuers employing pure pursuit is considered, and …

Optimizing Cluster Sets For The Scan Statistic Using Local Search, James Shulgan
Optimizing Cluster Sets For The Scan Statistic Using Local Search, James Shulgan
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In recent years, scattering sensors to produce wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been proposed for detecting localized events in large areas. Because sensor measurements are noisy, the WSN needs to use statistical methods such as the scan statistic. The scan statistic groups measurements into various clusters, computes a cluster statistic for each cluster, and decides that an event has happened if any of the statistics exceeds a threshold. Previous researchers have investigated the performance of the scan statistic to detect events; however, little attention was given to the optimization of which clusters the scan statistic should use. Using the scan …

Multi-Objective Optimization Of A Ridesharing System Performance, Mohammad Nasr Azadani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Ridesharing is a shared vehicle service with the potential to meet the growing travel demand due to population increase, economic growth, and shortage in transportation infrastructure capacity. Compared to the current system of predominantly using personal vehicles, ridesharing services reduce the number of vehicles while providing mobility services to the same number of people with no additional investment in the transportation infrastructure. One of the big challenges in implementing ridesharing services is matching drivers and riders. Conflicts between matching-objectives to comply with the interests of diverse stakeholders influence the efficiency of ridesharing in a transportation system. This study investigates the …
Knee Articular Cartilage Material Properties Estimation Through Fea, Eduardo Enrique Valdez
Knee Articular Cartilage Material Properties Estimation Through Fea, Eduardo Enrique Valdez
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating disease that leads to disability and loss of quality of life. Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a version of OA that develops after acute injury to the knee. PTOA is of particular interest because the disease can manifest earlier in life compared to primary OA. Several studies have shown that changes in the mechanical properties of soft tissues in the knee (articulating cartilage and menisci) are associated with worsening OA grades. Changes to the tissue mechanical properties must be considered to generate realistic computational models of individuals who have suffered traumatic injuries to the knee. Therefore, …

Water distribution systems have changed the landscape of communities through two services: 1) providing water supply for domestic and industrial use, and 2) providing water required to fight fires. However, a substantial portion of the water infrastructure in the country, as many of other public assets built over 50 years ago, are now reaching the end of their useful life; which combined with rapid growth and changes in demographics have placed water distribution pipe networks at a state that requires revitalization. The aging infrastructure along with the growing threat of natural and man-made disruptions have led water utilities to place …
Route Planning For Long-Term Robotics Missions, Christopher Alexander Arend Tatsch
Route Planning For Long-Term Robotics Missions, Christopher Alexander Arend Tatsch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Many future robotic applications such as the operation in large uncertain environment depend on a more autonomous robot. The robotics long term autonomy presents challenges on how to plan and schedule goal locations across multiple days of mission duration. This is an NP-hard problem that is infeasible to solve for an optimal solution due to the large number of vertices to visit. In some cases the robot hardware constraints also adds the requirement to return to a charging station multiple times in a long term mission. The uncertainties in the robot model and environment require the robot planner to account …
Investigation Of Asphaltene Adsorption At Liquid-Liquid And Liquid-Solid Interfaces, Fang Liu
Investigation Of Asphaltene Adsorption At Liquid-Liquid And Liquid-Solid Interfaces, Fang Liu
Dissertations and Theses
Asphaltenes, as indigenous components in crude oils, are believed to play an important role in the petroleum production and processing industry. For example, asphaltene molecules can adsorb onto the water / oil interface like the amphiphiles and hinder water droplet coalescence, resulting in the stabilization of water-in-oil emulsions. Also, in the upstream production, depending on the temperature and pressure, asphaltenes can precipitate and deposit onto the reservoir rocks, the wellbores and the pipelines, leading to the change in reservoir rocks’ surface wettability and the blockage of the production facilities. Hence, it is crucial to understand the mechanism of asphaltenes adsorption …

Computational Model For Neural Architecture Search, Ram Deepak Gottapu
Doctoral Dissertations
"A long-standing goal in Deep Learning (DL) research is to design efficient architectures for a given dataset that are both accurate and computationally inexpensive. At present, designing deep learning architectures for a real-world application requires both human expertise and considerable effort as they are either handcrafted by careful experimentation or modified from a handful of existing models. This method is inefficient as the process of architecture design is highly time-consuming and computationally expensive.
The research presents an approach to automate the process of deep learning architecture design through a modeling procedure. In particular, it first introduces a framework that treats …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This thesis work introduces a novel multi-fidelity modeling framework, which is designed to address the practical challenges encountered in Aerospace vehicle design when 1) multiple low-fidelity models exist, 2) each low-fidelity model may only be correlated with the high-fidelity model in part of the design domain, and 3) models may contain noise or uncertainty. The proposed approach approximates a high-fidelity model by consolidating multiple low-fidelity models using the localized Galerkin formulation. Also, two adaptive sampling methods are developed to efficiently construct an accurate model. The first acquisition formulation, expected effectiveness, searches for the global optimum and is useful for modeling …
Modeling And Optimization Of Trigeneration System In Daycare Facility, Andres Morales
Modeling And Optimization Of Trigeneration System In Daycare Facility, Andres Morales
All ETDs from UAB
Trigeneration systems, also known as Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP), simultaneously provide electric, mechanical, and thermal energy. Compared to traditional systems, they deliver higher fuel efficiencies as waste heat from engine coolant and/or exhaust is recovered and utilized. In heating, ventilation, and air condi-tioning (HVAC) systems, the recycled heat may be used to provide space heating, water heating, and cooling (through absorption chillers). As there are more practical applica-tions for the recovered heat during the heating season than the cooling season, trigenera-tion systems tend to be more attractive in colder weather. This research focuses on the PowerAire 65 by …
