Grouping Environmental Factors Influencing Individual Decision-Making Behavior In Software Projects: A Cluster Analysis, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Grouping Environmental Factors Influencing Individual Decision-Making Behavior In Software Projects: A Cluster Analysis, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
An individual’s decision-making behavior is heavily influenced by and adapted to external environmental factors. Given that software development is a human-centered activity, individual decision-making behavior may affect the software project quality. Although environmental factors affecting decision-making behavior in software projects have been identified in prior literature, there is not yet an objective and a full taxonomy of these factors. Thus, it is not trivial to manage these complex and diverse factors. To address this deficiency, we first design a semantic similarity algorithm between words by utilizing the synonymy and hypernymy relationships in WordNet. Further, we propose a method to measure …

Evaluating The Liquefaction And Reliquefaction Behavior Of A Carbonate Sand, Abouzar Sadrekarimi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Presentations
Despite extensive amount of research on liquefaction analysis of sands, reliquefaction behavior and cyclic liquefaction resistance of cohesionless soils under a repeated cyclic load have not received the same amount of consideration. This is important as most soil deposits in high seismic areas have been subjected to repeated number of earthquakes. This paper presents series of laboratory cyclic simple shear tests on specimens of a local carbonate sand from London, Ontario. Sand specimens are reconstituted at relative densities of 25%, 45%, and 65% and subjected to effective vertical stresses of 50, 100, 200, 400, and 600 kPa. Reconstituted samples are …

This paper deals with the problem of purposefully failing or yielding an object by a robotic gripper. We propose a grasp quality measure fabricated for robotic harvesting in which picking a crop from its stem is desired. The proposed metric characterizes a suitable grasp configuration for systematically controlling the failure behavior of an object to break it at the desired location while avoiding damage on other areas. Our approach is based on failure task information and gripper wrench insertion capability. Failure task definition is accomplished using failure theories. Gripper wrench insertion capability is formulated by modeling the friction between the …

Characterization Of A Carbonate Sand Based On Shear Wave Velocity Measurement, Abouzar Sadrekarimi, Keyvan Mirbaha
Civil and Environmental Engineering Presentations
Numerous studies have been carried out on the dynamic behavior of sands. However, few studies have investigated the dynamic characteristics of carbonate sands. This paper presents series of laboratory simple shear tests on specimens of a local carbonate sand from London (ON). Besides monotonic and cyclic shearing, the dynamic behavior of the sand is also characterized by measuring the velocity of shear waves travelling through the specimens. Drained and undrained shearing behavior of specimens with a wide range of relative density and consolidation stresses are tested. Shear wave velocity is found to vary with effective overburden stresses by an average …

Directed Acyclic Graph Continuous Max-Flow Image Segmentation For Unconstrained Label Orderings, John Sh Baxter, Martin Rajchl, A. Jonathan Mcleod, Jing Yuan, Terry M. Peters
Robarts Imaging Publications
Label ordering, the specification of subset–superset relationships for segmentation labels, has been of increasing interest in image segmentation as they allow for complex regions to be represented as a collection of simple parts. Recent advances in continuous max-flow segmentation have widely expanded the possible label orderings from binary background/foreground problems to extendable frameworks in which the label ordering can be specified. This article presents Directed Acyclic Graph Max-Flow image segmentation which is flexible enough to incorporate any label ordering without constraints. This framework uses augmented Lagrangian multipliers and primal–dual optimization to develop a highly parallelized solver implemented using GPGPU. This …

During building operation, a significant amount of energy is wasted due to equipment and human-related faults. To reduce waste, today's smart buildings monitor energy usage with the aim of identifying abnormal consumption behaviour and notifying the building manager to implement appropriate energy-saving procedures. To this end, this research proposes a new pattern-based anomaly classifier, the collective contextual anomaly detection using sliding window (CCAD-SW) framework. The CCAD-SW framework identifies anomalous consumption patterns using overlapping sliding windows. To enhance the anomaly detection capacity of the CCAD-SW, this research also proposes the ensemble anomaly detection (EAD) framework. The EAD is a generic framework …

The increase in electrical metering has created tremendous quantities of data and, as a result, possibilities for deep insights into energy usage, better energy management, and new ways of energy conservation. As buildings are responsible for a significant portion of overall energy consumption, conservation efforts targeting buildings can provide tremendous effect on energy savings. Building energy monitoring enables identification of anomalous or unexpected behaviors which, when corrected, can lead to energy savings. Although the available data is large, the limited availability of labels makes anomaly detection difficult. This research proposes a deep semi-supervised convolutional neural network with confidence sampling for …

The Internet of Things (IoT) enables connected objects to capture, communicate, and collect information over the network through a multitude of sensors, setting the foundation for applications such as smart grids, smart cars, and smart cities. In this context, large scale analytics is needed to extract knowledge and value from the data produced by these sensors. The ability to perform analytics on these data, however, is highly limited by the difficulties of collecting labels. Indeed, the machine learning techniques used to perform analytics rely upon data labels to learn and to validate results. Historically, crowdsourcing platforms have been used to …

We studied the graph topological properties of brain networks derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in a kainic acid induced model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in rats. Functional connectivity was determined by temporal correlation of the resting-state Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signals between two brain regions during 1.5% and 2% isoflurane, and analyzed as networks in epileptic and control rats. Graph theoretical analysis revealed a significant increase in functional connectivity between brain areas in epileptic than control rats, and the connected brain areas could be categorized as a limbic network and a default mode network (DMN). The …
Shape Memory Alloy Reinforced Concrete Frames Vulnerable To Strong Vertical Excitations, M A. Elfeki, Maged A. Youssef
Shape Memory Alloy Reinforced Concrete Frames Vulnerable To Strong Vertical Excitations, M A. Elfeki, Maged A. Youssef
Civil and Environmental Engineering Publications
Reinforced concrete (RC) framed buildings dissipate the seismic energy through yielding of the reinforcing bars. This yielding jeopardizes the serviceability of these buildings as it results in residual lateral deformations. Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) can recover inelastic strains by stress removal. This paper extends previous research by the authors that optimized the use of SMA bars in RC frames considering the horizontal seismic excitation by addressing the effect of the vertical seismic excitation. A steel RC six-storey building designed according to current seismic standards is considered as case study. Five different earthquake records with strong vertical components are …

Analysis Of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened Using Concrete Jackets, M. Monir A. Alhadid, Maged Youssef
Civil and Environmental Engineering Publications
Analysis of jacketed Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams considering the interfacial slip effect is a complicated problem. In the current practice, slip is neglected in the analysis and monolithic behavior is assumed in the jacketed section resulting in higher estimates of stiffness and/or capacity. Engineers need simplified yet robust tools to predict the actual behavior of jacketed RC beams. This paper provides a simplified method to analyze jacketed RC beams taking into account the interfacial slip distribution and the actual nonlinear behavior of both concrete and steel. An iterative calculation algorithm is developed to determine the moment-curvature and load-deflection curves of …

Fire Performance Of Reinforced Concrete Frames Using Sectional Analysis, Salah El-Din F. El-Fitiany, Maged Youssef
Civil and Environmental Engineering Publications
Global behavior of RC structures during fire events can be predicted using complex nonlinear thermal-structural numerical simulations. However, such simulations are computationally expensive, which limit their use by design engineers. A practical approach to track the performance of RC frames during fire exposure is proposed and validated in this paper. A previously developed simple heat transfer technique is used to calculate an average 1D temperature distribution for heated RC sections. Consequently, the flexural and axial stiffnesses as well as the unrestrained thermal deformations are evaluated using sectional analysis. Based on rational assumptions, simplified expressions are also driven to evaluate those …

Ductile Corrosion-Free Gfrp-Stainless Steel Reinforced Concrete Elements, Maged A. Youssef, Mohamed E. Meshaly, Ahmed Elansary
Civil and Environmental Engineering Publications
Corrosion of steel rebars is known to cause deterioration of concrete structures that can lead to catastrophic failures. To mitigate this problem, steel rebars can be replaced with Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rebars. However, the lack of ductility of GFRP-reinforced elements has prevented their use in many structural applications, especially in seismic areas. Stainless Steel (SS) rebars are corrosion resistant and have adequate energy absorption and ductility. However, they are much more expensive than steel rebars. This paper proposes the combined use of SS and GFRP rebars to achieve ductile and corrosion-free elements. The first challenge for such a proposal …
