The use of video in pedagogy is well established in the modern classroom with researched understanding of its benefits. Prior literature reviews provide a foundation for the impacts within a wide scope of environments and subjects. Managing terminal lake elevation and salinity are emerging problems worldwide. We contribute to terminal lake management research by quantitatively assessing water and salt flow for Utah’s Great Salt Lake. In 1959, Union Pacific Railroad constructed a rock-filled causeway across the Great Salt Lake, separating the lake into a north and south arm. Flow between the two arms was limited to two 4.6 meter wide rectangular culverts installed during construction, an 88 meter opening (referred to locally as a breach) installed in 1984, and the semi porous material of the causeway. Ellipsometry has long been a valuable technique for the optical characterization of layered systems and thin films. While simple systems like epitaxial silicon dioxide are easily characterized, complex systems of silicon and carbon junctions have proven difficult to analyze. Traditional model dielectric functions for layered silicon homojunctions, a system with a similar structure to modern transistors, often have correlated parameters during ellipsometric data analysis. Similarly, epitaxial graphene as grown from thermal sublimation of silicon from silicon carbide or through chemical vapor deposition, tend to have model dielectric function parameters that correlate with the optical thickness of the graphene due to …

Microfluidics imposes different requirements on 3D printing compared to many applications because the critical features for microfluidics consist of internal microvoids. Resins for general 3D printing applications, however, are not necessarily formulated to meet the requirements of microfluidics and minimize the size of fabricated voids. In this paper we use an optical approach to guide custom formulation of resins to minimize the cross sectional size of fabricated flow channels as exemplars of such voids. Granted that most distresses in asphalt (flexible) concrete (AC) pavements are directly related to fracture, it becomes clear that identifying and characterizing fracture properties of AC mixtures is a critical step towards a better pavement design. Large configuration spaces present difficulties for developers validating large soft- ware systems and for users selecting the proper configuration to achieve the desired runtime behavior. Robot systems face the same challenges as they may have hundreds of configurable parameters. Our work focuses on co-robotic systems, those in which robots and humans work closely together to augment each other’s capabilities. We aim to leverage the user’s knowledge about a system to help determine configuration errors. To accomplish this, users mark runtime failures while observing the system in operation. Priming, in the context of nonviral gene delivery, is the treatment of cells with a compound prior to gene transfer that enhances transfection efficiency and/or transgene expression. Essentially, it is the application of an adjuvant approach to gene delivery. Effective transfection strategies may require priming to compete with the efficiency of viral transduction in order to achieve clinically relevant efficiency and expression in vivo. To search for priming compounds, a high throughput screen of the NIH Clinical Collection was performed using 25kDa b-PEI, an EGFP/luciferase plasmid, and HEK293T cells. This work presents a novel transient field-circuit simulation method based on the time-domain integral equation (TDIE) and circuit macromodels. The traditional field-circuit simulation method constructs the Kirchoff's equations for lumped circuits with SPICE models, but they cannot handle problems with unknown circuit structures. The proposed method creates parametric macromodels to represent the port constitutive relations of the unknown circuits. Then the obtained macromodel is coupled with TDIE to enable the transient field-circuit cosimulation. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. Sensory stimulation of wrist musculature can enhance stability in the proximal arm and may be a useful therapy aimed at improving arm control post-stroke. Specifically, our prior research indicates tendon vibration can enhance stability during point-to-point arm movements and in tracking tasks. The goal of the present study was to investigate the influence of forearm tendon vibration on endpoint stability, measured at the hand, immediately following forward arm movements in an unstable environment. Microbial cell wall-deconstructing enzymes are widely used in the food, wine, pulp and paper, textile, and detergent industries and will be heavily utilized by cellulosic biorefineries in the production of fuels and chemicals. Avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are essential components in quantum key distribution systems and active imaging systems requiring both ultrafast response time to measure photon time of flight and high gain to detect low photon flux. The internal gain of an APD can improve system signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Excess noise is typically kept low through the selection of material with intrinsically low excess noise, using separate-absorption-multiplication (SAM) heterostructures, or taking advantage of the dead-space effect using thin multiplication regions. Plasma Membrane Temperature Gradients And Multiple Cell Permeabilization Induced By Low Peak Power Density Femtosecond Lasers, Allen L. Garner, Bogdan Neculaes, Maxim Deminsky, Dmitry V. Dylov, Chulmin Joo, Evelina R. Loghin, Siavash Yazdanfar, Kenneth R. Conway

Calculations indicate that selectively heating the extracellular media induces membrane temperature gradients that combine with electric fields and a temperature-induced reduction in the electro- permeabilization threshold to potentially facilitate exogenous molecular delivery. Experiments by a wide-field, pulsed femtosecond laser with peak power density far below typical single cell optical de- livery systems confirmed this hypothesis. Operating this laser in continuous wave mode at the same average power permeabilized many fewer cells, suggesting that bulk heating alone is insufficient and temperature gradients are crucial for permeabilization. A mixed ionic–electronic conductor based on nanofibrillated cellulose composited with poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythio­phene):­poly(styrene-sulfonate) along with high boiling point solvents is demonstrated in bulky electrochemical devices. The high electronic and ionic conductivities of the resulting nanopaper are exploited in devices which exhibit record values for the charge storage capacitance (1F) in supercapacitors and transconductance (1S) in electrochemical transistors.

The slot antenna backed by the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity usually demonstrates very narrow bandwidth. In this paper, we extend the interpretation to our original dual mode SIW ring slot antenna so that a broadband radiation property based on the TE102 mode is unveiled for the first time. Through the experimental verification, over 12% bandwidth is conveniently achieved. The realized gain reaches over 7 dB. Its broadband working principle is studied in details. Simulated and measured data are both presented to verify the proposed ideas.

Supervised machine learning can be used to predict which drugs human cardiomyocytes have been exposed to. Using electrophysiological data collected from human cardiomyocytes with known exposure to different drugs, a supervised machine learning algorithm can be trained to recognize and classify cells that have been exposed to an unknown drug. Furthermore, the learning algorithm provides information on the relative contribution of each data parameter to the overall classification. Probabilities and confidence in the accuracy of each classification may also be determined by the algorithm. The Harlan, Kellioka, and Darby coals in Harlan County, Kentucky, have been among the highest quality coals mined in the Central Appalachians. The Middle Pennsylvanian coals are correlative with the Upper Elkhorn No. 1 to Upper Elkhorn No. 3½ coals to the northwest of the Pine Mountain thrust fault. Much of the mining traditionally was controlled by captive, steel-company-owned mines and the coal was part of the high volatile A bituminous portion of the coking coal blend. Background

Accurate measurement of forces through the proximal radius can assess the effects of some surgical procedures on radioulnar load sharing, but is difficult to achieve given the redundant loading nature of the musculoskeletal system. Previously reported devices have relied on indirect measurements that may alter articular joint location and function. An axial load transducer interposed in the diaphysis of the radius may accurately quantify unknown axial loads of the proximal radius, and maintain articular location.

Determining an accurate value for the supply and installation of mechanical and electrical services is a difficult task due to the level of specialisation and variance within this sector of the industry. The level of specialised knowledge and the ever changing technology has prevented the Quantity Surveyor from taking a firm hold on the cost estimation of these services. Cost estimates have previously been prepared by consultant services engineers or based on costs provided by these consultants.
