Nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are advanced materials known for their shape-changing capability in response to external stimuli such as heat, light and electromagnetic fields. This makes them excellent candidates for applications like soft robotics and energy harvesting. While studies on their physical behavior have shed light on the complex nonlinear mechanics of LCEs, investigations through all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations remain an underutilized avenue compared to experimental and theoretical analyses. This limited use is primarily due to the lack of well-established frameworks for conducting high-fidelity atomistic simulations of LCEs. To bridge this gap, we introduce an all-atom MD simulation …

Data for the journal article "Modeling of the chest wall response to prolonged bracing in pectus carinatum" submitted to PLOS One in 2023 by Sargent et al. The data is a recording of prescribed brace pressures, patient reported hours of wear, and clinician recorded pressure to correct through the treatment process. The data file was compiled via Microsoft Excel as part of the Microsoft 365 Office Suite. The top row of each sheet within the file is the header line with the data in all subsequent rows. The journal article contains an in-depth definition of the variables used in the …

A numerical lifting-line method (implemented in an open-source software package) is presented which can accurately estimate the aerodynamics of wings with arbitrary sweep, dihedral, and twist. Previous numerical lifting-line methods have suffered from grid convergence challenges and limitations in accurately modeling the effects of sweep, or have relied on empirical relations for swept-wing parameters and have been limited in their application to typical wing geometries. This work presents novel improvements in accuracy, flexibility, and speed for complex geometries over previous methods. In the current work, thin-airfoil theory is used to correct section lift coefficients for sweep, providing a more general …

This data includes the template worksheets, as well as filled worksheets that include ideas written by the participants in a research experiment. This experiment tested the effectiveness of a novel tactics ideation method (i.e., Random Prompts method) to a modified Brainwriting method. Transcribed copies of this data are also included.
Accompanying the data are experiment briefing presentations, Python code for rapid evaluation of the data (the evaluation methods themselves were also developed by the authors), a spreadsheet file with evaluation data (this is a necessary input to the code), and organizational trees (for team idea sets) associated with the evaluation …

Development Of A Temperature Measurement Camera Using Cost Effective Hardware, Benjamin F. Thieme, Jesse Wilson
Haslam Scholars Projects
The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused lock downs around the globe, forcing many schools and businesses to temporarily close. For them to reopen safely, it is imperative to identify cases quickly so that individuals can be quarantined before the virus spreads to more people. An alternative to testing is to screen individuals for high temperatures that would indicate fevers. With the risk of contagion that occurs during close contact between humans, traditional thermometers may be unsuitable. Thus, the purpose of this design project is to design, construct, and test a temperature measurement system using a thermal camera …

This research is focused on the thermal mixing region of parallel jets entering an upper plenum. The highly-coupled thermal-fluid physics are relevant to plenum-to-plenum flow in High Temperature Gas Reactors such as thermal striping phenomena. Experimentally measured boundary conditions and system response quantities for use in Computational Fluid Dynamics were tabulated and published for public use.

Demonstration Of A Quasi-Cw Diode-Pumped Metastable Xenon Laser, Carl R. Sanderson, Charles W. Ballmann, Jiande Han, Amanda B. Clark, Brett H. Hokr, Kunning G. Xu, Michael C. Heaven
PRC-Affiliated Research
In this work, we present the first demonstration of a quasi-continuous-wave diode-pumped metastable xenon laser at atmospheric pressures. Lasing in metastable noble gas species has received increased attention in the last few years as a possible high-power laser source. This demonstration shows that metastable xenon has a sufficiently broad absorption spectrum to be pumped with a broad-bandwidth diode laser. This implies that a high-power metastable xenon gas laser should be achievable using high-power pump diodes.

Reducing Soil Compaction In Agriculture, Chris Gum, Justin Manzella, Brett Kayman
Washington University / UMSL Mechanical Engineering Design Project JME 4110
Our project was to prototype a device to reduce compaction in soil during industrial agricultural processes. We chose to highlight tilling as the process to focus on, but our final design could be adapted to work for many different applications.

The work associated with this project is described in a manuscript entitled "How vision governs the collective behavior of cycling pelotons" by Belden et al., along with an electronic supplementary material document. We investigate properties of densely packed groups of bicycle racers, which are known as cycling pelotons. These pelotons exhibit features of collective animal behavior, including emergent behavior from inter-individual interactions. In this data set, we classify global shapes of the peloton, and identify and track individual cyclists to determine the details of network structure. We also investigate motion waves that propagate through the pelotons.

This study presents an investigation to the mechanical properties of FML components under static axial and bending loads. Two types of Fiber Metal Laminates (FMLs), namely, FML 1 and 2 were considered in the present research. FML1 contains 4 layers of laminated glass/epoxy laminate while FML 2 contains two aramid fiber laminates that replaced the glass/epoxy laminates and adjacent to the inner metal layer. Experimental stiffness and strength are discussed and compared with the theoretical values. Under bending loads, two different end conditions are considered, free and fixed and the results both ends were compared. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was …

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)
The Chinese petrochemical industry is facing pressure to meet strict targets of energy consumption and carbon emission reductions. Water pumps are the primary equipment used in most chemical and agrochemical industries sectors since water is commonly used for cooling and heating purposes, but these pumps also consume a large amount of energy. Other uses of water pumps in these industries include producing steam for heating, preparing reaction media or absorptive reagents, rinsing products, and distilling. As for the electrical components of the water pump systems, current technologies of variable frequency drives and superconducting transmission lines are unable to increase the …
