Tilting Of A Historic Façade During Construction Works – Geotechnical Cause And Effect On The Stiffening System, Rolf Katzenbach, Alexandra Weidle, Helmut Hoffmann
Tilting Of A Historic Façade During Construction Works – Geotechnical Cause And Effect On The Stiffening System, Rolf Katzenbach, Alexandra Weidle, Helmut Hoffmann
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This article reports on a 5-storey historic building which was completely cored to build a new one inside its historic façades. A bending resistant steel framework was installed inside the construction ground and tied positively with the façades to stiffen them during construction works. Vertical loads were taken by a jet grouting gravity retaining wall, which also acted as supporting system for the building pit. To carry lateral loads the framework was tied back into the ground by vertical and inclined pre-stressed anchors. Several months after installing the gravity walls, just after the end of the demolition works and after …

Improvement Of Fine Sand Properties With Water Soluble Epoxy Resin Grouts, Costas Anagnostopoulos, Evangelos Stavridakis, Ioannis Grammatikopoulos
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
It is generally accepted, that only chemical grouts or solutions are available to penetrate and fill narrow joints or soils with very small pore size. During the last 30 years, a few hundreds of different compounds have been used for this purpose. Such materials show a wide spectrum of properties. Epoxy resins are some of the common compounds which are used in chemical grouting due to their high strength and durability against mechanical or physical erosion. In this paper, the improvement of physical and mechanical properties of fine sand injected with a water soluble, two component epoxy resin is investigated. …
Soil Improvement Using Deep Dynamic Compaction, Omar M. Alsamman, George P. Kelley
Soil Improvement Using Deep Dynamic Compaction, Omar M. Alsamman, George P. Kelley
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The use of a conventional shallow foundation system in the construction of a baseball stadium on the Delaware River waterfront was only possible by improvement of existing soils using deep dynamic compaction (DDC). Subsurface conditions at the site consisted of 5 ft to 15 ft of miscellaneous fill materials overlying up to 10 ft of soft river sediments over dense sand. Numerous obstructions and old foundations were found in the fill making pile driving difficult and extremely expensive. Several foundation designs and ground improvement alternatives were evaluated for building support. A deep dynamic compaction soil improvement plan was designed to …
Design Of Lightweight Fills For Road Embankments On Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, Hany L. Riad, Anthony L. Ricci, Peter W. Osborn, David A. D'Angelo, John S. Horvath
Design Of Lightweight Fills For Road Embankments On Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, Hany L. Riad, Anthony L. Ricci, Peter W. Osborn, David A. D'Angelo, John S. Horvath
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The use of lightweight-fill materials for highway construction increased significantly worldwide during the 1990s. Predominant with this trend was the increased use of cellular geosynthetics (geofoams and geocombs), especially block-molded expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam, on highway and bridge embankments. EPS geofoam is increasingly recognized as an important tool for reducing overall cost of highways through "accelerated construction". Thus, it was appropriate that lightweight-fill materials, mostly EPS, were the materials of choice on Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project, commonly known as the "Big Dig". EPS highway embankments have been constructed, as part of a cost-and schedule-initiative, replacing the original design concepts …
A Novel Approach To Remediation Of A Waterfront Chromium Facility, Christian Lavallee, Raj Rajaram
A Novel Approach To Remediation Of A Waterfront Chromium Facility, Christian Lavallee, Raj Rajaram
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A chromium ore processing facility in Maryland was mandated by the State to undertake remedial steps to prevent further migration of contaminants to the soil, groundwater and surface water. The owner of the facility entered into a Consent Decree (CD) with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to submit and execute a remedial design based on findings of site investigations. These investigations found that the soils were contaminated with hexavalent chromium. Additionally, both the shallow and deep aquifers, and surface water were found to be contaminated with chromium. The remedial action completed at …

The Use Of Eps Geofoam Lightweight Fill In Hollywood, Fl, M. E. Meyer, L. Zhou, C. M. Gonzalez
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Geofoam lightweight fill permitted elevation of a loading dock and access roadway to facilitate offloading of banquet/convention center and hotel supplies, products, etc. directly into the second floor of a development underlain with highly compressible soils, in Hollywood, Florida. Similar roadways had been previously constructed using conventional filling techniques and have resulted in continual maintenance problems and grade separation between pile supported structures and roadways supported on filled ground. The South Florida barrier island geology and interior mangrove swamp areas, which are reclaimed land formed through the use of dredging and hydraulic filling operations in the early …
Erskine Street Interchange, Gregory Biesiadecki, Diane Porciello
Erskine Street Interchange, Gregory Biesiadecki, Diane Porciello
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Erskine Street Interchange is a new roadway interchange constructed in Brooklyn, New York in 2002. Challenges addressed in construction of the interchange included poor foundation conditions, such as the presence of hydraulic sand fill, a weak cohesive deposit, an approximately 30-year old municipal waste landfill beneath portions of the abutment ramps, and the presence of one of the most important commuter roadways in Brooklyn and Queens, the Belt Parkway, immediately adjacent to the construction site. How these challenges are addressed in the final design and construction of the Erskine Street Interchange will be discussed. The design consists of on grade …

Multiple Tunnels In Soil With Shotcrete Linings On Tren Urbano, San Juan, Puerto Rico, William H. Hansmire, Victor S. Romero, Michael T. Mcrae
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Tunnelling was part of the new Tren Urbano transit system in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Four tunnels in soil were designed and constructed with shotcrete linings using the sequential excavation method (SEM), which uses some aspects of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Four 6-m-diameter tunnels of about 100 m in length were required to preserve two historic structures located above the subway alignment. Two of the four tunnels were constructed as part of a turnout to a future line. Cover over the SEM tunnels ranges from 20 to 5 m. Some of the tunnels are located less than 1 …

A Methodology To Predict The Remaining Service Life Of Cscps, Jay N. Meegoda, Thomas M. Juliano, Mutiu G. Ayoola, Sunil Dhar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Despite the fact that corrugated steel culvert pipe (CSCP) is widely used for stream crossings and drainage in many transportation systems in the US, historically, very little has been done regarding its condition assessment and planned maintenance. This research provides a methodology for developing a comprehensive plan for inspection, cleaning, condition assessment and prediction of remaining service of CSCP. Inspection frequency guidelines were developed based upon culvert size, age, importance and environmental factors, e.g., corrosion and erosion, bed load and pH. The CSCPs are classified into three levels according to increasing need for inspection, e.g., annual inspections are recommended for …
Errors In Design Leading To Pile Failures During Seismic Liquefaction, Subhamoy Bhattacharya, Malcolm Bolton
Errors In Design Leading To Pile Failures During Seismic Liquefaction, Subhamoy Bhattacharya, Malcolm Bolton
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Collapse of piled foundations in liquefiable soils has been observed in the majority of the recent strong earthquakes despite the fact that a large margin of safety is employed in their design. This paper critically reviews the current design methods and the underlying mechanism behind them. The current method of pile design under earthquake loading is based on a bending mechanism where the inertia and slope movement (lateral spreading) induce bending in the pile. This paper shows that this hypothesis of pile failure cannot explain some observations of pile failure. It has been identified that the current design codes of …
One-Dimensional Shear Wave Profiling For V30 And Nehrp Soil Classification Using The Refraction Microtremor (Remi) Method, Satish Pullammanappallil, William Honjas, John N. Louie
One-Dimensional Shear Wave Profiling For V30 And Nehrp Soil Classification Using The Refraction Microtremor (Remi) Method, Satish Pullammanappallil, William Honjas, John N. Louie
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The refraction microtremor (ReMi) method uses standard P-wave, refraction recording equipment to record ambient noise and then uses a wavefield transformation to produce Rayleigh wave dispersion curves from which average one-dimensional shear-wave profile of the subsurface can be derived. The combination of commonly available equipment, simple recording with no source, a wavefield transformation data processing technique, and an interactive Rayleigh-wave dispersion modeling tool exploits the most effective aspects of the microtremor, spectral analysis of surface wave (SASW), and multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) techniques. It overcomes several of the problems afflicting other techniques for estimating shallow shear velocities that …

Success And Failure In Predicting Pile Performance, Harry G. Poulos
Success And Failure In Predicting Pile Performance, Harry G. Poulos
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper reviews the anatomy of predictions for pile and pile group performance, and discusses the various facets of the prediction process. A series of case histories is presented in which successful predictions were made of the pile performance. Most of these cases involve a single pile or a small group of piles. A further series of case histories is then discussed in which the predictions were far less successful. Most of these cases involve larger pile groups. The reasons for the success or otherwise of the predictions are discussed, and it is concluded that successful predictions require a combination …

The World Trade Center “Bathtub”, A Case History, George J. Tamaro
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In 1967 the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) undertook the construction of the World Trade Center (WTC) diaphragm (slurry) walls, installation of the lateral support system and the excavation of the site, commonly referred to as the “Bathtub”. The work took two years to complete. In 2001 the City of New York undertook the re-excavation of the site after the terrorist attacks. The recovery work took eight months to complete. When the World Trade Center Recovery Effort officially concluded on May 30, 2002, reconstruction was already underway. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey …

An Evaluation Of The Load-Displacement Behavior And Load Test Interpretation Of Micropiles In Rock, Andrew G. Cushing, Scott A. Stonecheck, Bradley D. Campbell, Scott D. Dodds
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This paper summarizes a series of never-before reported axial compression load tests conducted on single micropiles that are embedded in or constructed on rock. These data are augmented by load tests on similar micropiles that have been reported by others. The observed displacements at the maximum test load (QMAX) and reported unfactored design load (QDL) are summarized. In addition, the small-strain load-displacement behavior of these foundations is evaluated by comparing the initial tangent slope (IS) to the theoretical elastic slope (ES), which is calculated by modeling the micropile as a free-standing column exhibiting fully -composite behavior. The data demonstrate that …
Stabilization Of A Historic Structure Founded On An Unstable Mesa, James W. Niehoff
Stabilization Of A Historic Structure Founded On An Unstable Mesa, James W. Niehoff
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In the mid-1920s, a 26-room mansion fashioned after a 16th Century Scottish castle, was built south of Denver, Colorado atop a large mesa. Although significant portions of the mesa were capped with a hard, relatively intact conglomerate rock formation, the outer edges were either missing or fractured into blocks and underlain by weaker claystone. Since its construction, portions of the conglomerate capstone have shifted, causing settlement and lateral movement of the outer parts of the residence. As part of recent renovation work, a comprehensive evaluation of foundation conditions was conducted to evaluate the cause of past structural movements and to …
Design Lessons From Load Tests On Open- And Closed-Ended Pipe Piles, Kyuho Paik, Rodrigo Salgado, Junhwan Lee
Design Lessons From Load Tests On Open- And Closed-Ended Pipe Piles, Kyuho Paik, Rodrigo Salgado, Junhwan Lee
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Both the driving response and static bearing capacity of open-ended piles are affected by the soil plug that forms inside the pile during pile driving. In order to investigate the effect of the soil plug on the load capacity of pipe piles in general, field pile load tests were performed on instrumented open- and closed-ended piles driven into sand. For the open-ended pile, the soil plug length was continuously measured during pile driving, allowing calculation of an incremental filling ratio, IFR for the pile. The cumulative hammer blow count for the openended pile with final IFR of 77.5% was 16% …
Instrumentation And Performance Of Tied-Back Shotcrete Shoring In Sand Adjacent To A Hospital Structure, Carol Domitric, Matthew Janes
Instrumentation And Performance Of Tied-Back Shotcrete Shoring In Sand Adjacent To A Hospital Structure, Carol Domitric, Matthew Janes
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Recent additions to the Brantford General Hospital expansion included construction of a new hospital wing, involving excavations of up to 11 metres (36 feet) depth, in loose to compact sand adjacent to an existing eight-storey hospital structure. The tendered contract called for interlocking caisson walls. An alternative method of temporary excavation support, tied-back shotcrete shoring, was proposed by HC Matcon Ltd. Due to a lack of familiarity with this method in Ontario, the uncertainty of attaining near-zero movements, and the proximity of adjacent ‘lifeline’ structures, the design-build team of HC Matcon and Isherwood Associates implemented a comprehensive program of quality …
Grouting And Dewatering In Balancing Settlement Of A Building, Jinyuan Liu
Grouting And Dewatering In Balancing Settlement Of A Building, Jinyuan Liu
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A case study using grouting and dewatering system to protect a residential building during an adjacent deep excavation is presented in this paper. The building was a 73-year old masonry structure with two additional stories added to its original designed four stories height. The building was located 5 m away from a 15 m deep excavation. The project was located in downtown Shanghai, China. Grouting was injected between excavation and the building to compensate for ground loss and stress relief to reduce the building’s settlement. Dewatering was applied at the far end to increase the settlements and limit the differential …
Skin Friction And Pile Design, Akira Wada
Skin Friction And Pile Design, Akira Wada
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The skin friction of pile is found as a parameter of pile shaft displacement. It will not be a simple/constant values for each type of soil/weathered rock. Pile load test data shows skin friction grows to maximum strength at certain displacement and then reduces to residual strength. Due to this property, the main active skin friction zone is shifted downwards with the increase of load. From the shared ratio of total skin friction in pile bearing capacity, the share ratio of skin friction is found related with pile length. This means that for 30m long pile, the skin friction share …
