Study Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Anisotropic Magnetoelastic Structure With A Point Source, Amares Chattopadhyay, Sanjeev A. Sahu
Study Of Seismic Wave Propagation In Anisotropic Magnetoelastic Structure With A Point Source, Amares Chattopadhyay, Sanjeev A. Sahu
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
We aim to study the effect of point source on the propagation of horizontally polarised shear wave in a magnetoelastic self-reinforced layer lying over a heterogeneous self-reinforced half-space. The heterogeneity in the half-space has been considered due to quadratic variation in rigidity. Using the Green’s function method based on algebraic transformations, we have obtained the relation showing the dependence of phase velocity of the shear wave. The solution part of the problem involves the perturbation approach. The dispersion curves have been obtained for different values of magnetoelastic and inhomogeneity parameters. It is observed that the dispersion equation is in assertion …
L'Aquila Seismic Event On 6th April 2009: Site Effects And Critical Points In Microzonation Activity Within The Aterno Valley Municipalities, Mario Luigi Rainone, Patrizio Signanini, Giovanna Vessia, Pasquale Greco, Sara Di Benedetto
L'Aquila Seismic Event On 6th April 2009: Site Effects And Critical Points In Microzonation Activity Within The Aterno Valley Municipalities, Mario Luigi Rainone, Patrizio Signanini, Giovanna Vessia, Pasquale Greco, Sara Di Benedetto
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
L’Aquila earthquake was a complex seismic event characterized by its main shock on 6th April 2009 with magnitude Mw=6.3 and many foreshocks and aftershocks that stroke the whole Aterno River Valley from November 2008 up to September 2009. The huge amount of strong-motion records collected by permanent and temporary stations placed in the valley show a heterogeneous seismic hazard scenario related to different damage levels. With respect to the seismological features of the records within the “crater” (that is the portion of the Aterno Valley which suffered the strongest struck), they show “near field” and “near source” characters although the …
Banda Aceh-Indonesia Ground Response Analysis During The 2004 Indian Ocean Mega Earthquake, Bambang Setiawan, Wahyu Budi Kusuma
Banda Aceh-Indonesia Ground Response Analysis During The 2004 Indian Ocean Mega Earthquake, Bambang Setiawan, Wahyu Budi Kusuma
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The site response effect i.e. soil amplification has caused major structure damages founded on thick soft soils. Banda Aceh, Indonesia is underlain by approximately 70m to 206m thick alluvium. Thus, site-specific ground response analysis of Banda Aceh is necessary to be warranted. Due to the absence of strong motion records during the 2004 Indian Ocean mega earthquake duplication of synthetic strong motions are used in this study. Subsequently, ground response analysis was carried out by using computer programs of NERA. The results of the site-specific ground response studies expose the real Banda Aceh’s soil response during the 2004 Sumatran mega …
Determination Of Mse Wall Pseudo Static Coefficient Based On Seismic Performance, Ali Komak Panah, Majid Yazdandoust, Reza Sadeghzadegan
Determination Of Mse Wall Pseudo Static Coefficient Based On Seismic Performance, Ali Komak Panah, Majid Yazdandoust, Reza Sadeghzadegan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This study, tries to suggest a design method based on displacement using finite difference numerical modeling in reinforcing soil retaining wall. In this case, loading characteristics, such as magnitude, frequency, peak ground acceleration and geometrical characteristics of reinforced soil structure are considered to correct the pseudo static method and finally introduce the pseudo static coefficient as a function of seismic performance level and peak ground acceleration. In addition, the authors has tried to simply suggest the equivalent harmonic loading of selected acceleration records. Considering the loading parameters, mechanically stabilized earth wall parameters and type of the site showed that the …

Geotechnical Problems In The 2011 Tohoku Pacific Earthquakes, Kohji Tokimatsu, Hiroko Suzuki, Kota Katsumata, Shuji Tamura
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
An overview of the geotechnical aspects of the building damage in the 2011 Tohoku Pacific earthquake is presented, based on field reconnaissance made after the quake. It is shown that: (1) Extensive soil liquefaction occurred along the coast of Tokyo Bay and around the Tonegawa River floodplain. Liquefaction primarily occurred within relatively new reclaimed area, with large ground settlement up to 60 cm, accompanied by settlement/tilting of wooden and reinforced concrete buildings supported on spread foundations; (2) Numerous houses in Sendai’s hilly residential areas constructed with cut-and-fill methods were badly damaged not only by simple collapse of retaining walls, but …
Design Of A-Walls For Stabilization Of Slopes And Embankments In Soft Soils, Jesús E. Gómez, Carlos Englert, Helen D. Robinson
Design Of A-Walls For Stabilization Of Slopes And Embankments In Soft Soils, Jesús E. Gómez, Carlos Englert, Helen D. Robinson
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A-Wall systems are a combination of deep foundations and, in some cases, tiebacks used to provide lateral support to an unstable ground mass. Determination of the lateral and vertical forces acting on an A-Wall system can be a complex endeavor. As the unstable soil mass tends to move past and through the A-Wall system, forces are generated between the A-Wall elements and the soil. These forces provide support to the ground mass. If the A-Wall is correctly designed, the forces will increase as the soil moves until a maximum is attained at which ground movement ceases and the system reaches …

Performance Appraisal Of Ballasted Rail Track Stabilised By Geosynthetic Reinforcement And Shock Mats, Buddhima Indraratna, Sanjay Nimbalkar, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Rail tracks serve the principal mode of transportation for bulk freight and passengers in Australia. Ballast is an essential constituent governing the overall stability and performance of rail tracks. However, large repetitive loads from heavy haul and passenger trains often lead to excessive deformation and degradation of the ballast layer, which necessitate frequent and expensive track maintenance works. In Australia, the high cost of track maintenance is often associated with ballast degradation, fouling (e.g. coal and subgrade soil) and associated poor drainage, differential settlement of track, pumping of subgrade soils, and track misalignment due to excessive lateral movements. With increased …
Long-Term Effects Of Earthquake-Induced Slope Failures, Ikuo Towhata
Long-Term Effects Of Earthquake-Induced Slope Failures, Ikuo Towhata
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The earthquake-induced slope failures are now attracting significant concerns among experts of landslides. The reason for this is the complicated causative mechanisms as well as its impact on communities. The present paper states moreover that the onset of seismic slope failure is not only the consequence of a natural disaster but also the beginning of a long-term disaster in which the compound effects of the preceding earthquakes and the following heavy rain falls play significant roles. After addressing cases of this kind of natural disaster together with their classifications, study is made of the material properties of rocks subjected to …
A Laboratory Study Of Strong And Weak Sandstones, Arup Bandyopadhyay, Hasan Abdullah
A Laboratory Study Of Strong And Weak Sandstones, Arup Bandyopadhyay, Hasan Abdullah
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The laboratory evaluation of four sandstones from three projects, Shwezaye H.E. Project, Myanmar, Ujh H.E. Project, J&K, India (two variants) and Ken- Betwa Link Project, M.P., India, is presented here. The study leads to three broad inferences: one, there could be very large variation between two sandstones; e.g., here, sandstone from Ken-Betwa, vis-à-vis other three (comparatively poor) sandstones, is superior in all respects (except grain density). Two, the three poor sandstones differ in respect of some – not all – properties and parameters. Three, none of the three poor sandstones is better than the other two in respect of all …
Correlation Between VS And Rqd For Different Rock Types, Emre Biringen, John Davie
Correlation Between VS And Rqd For Different Rock Types, Emre Biringen, John Davie
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Although there is no direct relationship between the shear wave velocity (VS) of in-situ rock and Rock Quality Designation (RQD), it is apparent that some relationship exists since both VS and RQD decrease in fractured and weathered rock. However, unweathered or unfractured soft rock will have comparatively low VS compared with unweathered or unfractured hard rock since VS is a function of rock hardness and density. Thus, any relationship between VS and RQD will be specific to a particular rock type, and, in many cases, to a particular area/region where the hardness and density …
Ground Improvement For Redevelopment Of Former Landfill, Larry P. Jedele, Brandon Buschmeier
Ground Improvement For Redevelopment Of Former Landfill, Larry P. Jedele, Brandon Buschmeier
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A former industrial landfill site was selected for the design and construction of a large industrial building. Due to the soil and groundwater conditions along with potential environmental impacts discussed in this paper, support of the building using shallow spread foundations or conventional deep foundations, such as driven or cast-in-place piles or drilled piers were not considered to be reasonable foundation support alternatives. Therefore, ground improvement was deemed the best alternative to support the building, floor slabs and machine foundations for the project, although timber piles with a structural slab were also considered. Controlled modulus columns and rammed aggregate piers …

Application Of Case Studies To Practice In Foundation Engineering In India, Mahesh D. Desai, Jignesh B. Patel, Nehal H. Desai
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
India has massive developments, urbanization, housing, communication in last decade. The optimization of cost and saving construction time to complete, are now new aspects which geotechnical engineers are facing. Till today the typical design of shallow foundations of structure-buildings, fly over and dams on non-plastic silty fine sand subsoils found in alluvial deposits of state like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Bengal and long coastal belt, were designed by age old practice based on soil mechanics of 1948. Such proven practice became BIS codes for design and construction of structural foundations in 1976-81. The common sense and observational approach of Terzaghi …

Case Study: Application Of The Observational Method Using High Strain Dynamic Tests, Adolfo C. Caicedo-Aspiazu, Nelson Caicedo
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In-situ High Strain Dynamic Testing (HSDT) was developed more than 40 years ago. When a hammer or drop weight strikes the top of a pile, a compressive stress wave travels down its shaft at a speed that is a function of the elastic modulus and mass density. The impact induces a force and particle velocity at the top of the pile that can be measured using accelerometers and strain gauges. This paper discusses the theory behind using HSDT instruments and the procedures to calculate the capacity of the pile. The role of selecting the proper instrument to record them is …

Experiences In Large Slope Stability Problems Under Complex Geology, Camilo Marulanda, Alberto Marulanda, Camilo Phillips
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
This article presents a brief summary of the origin of metamorphic rocks, specially schist and the presence of shear or gouge zones in metamorphic rocks, as defects that induce weakness characteristics to the rock mass and that depart substantially from the traditionally evaluation of joints and discontinuities, turning eventually into failure surfaces that govern the stability conditions of surface works. The effect these weak zones inflict into the metamorphic rock mass, especially to schist, causing significant slope stability problems, is illustrated through three case histories. The presence of such defects in the rock mass, detected and analyzed by means of …
"Extreme Foundations" For Peat Deposits: Conceptual Model, Creative Thinking And Learning Process, Chee-Ming Chan
"Extreme Foundations" For Peat Deposits: Conceptual Model, Creative Thinking And Learning Process, Chee-Ming Chan
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
As engineering is essentially an application of science and mathematics to resolve real-life, practical problems, incorporation of actual field encounters or case histories in the teaching process can facilitate better understanding among students by providing a link between the theories and the applied solutions. It is the same for geo-engineering courses, like Advanced Foundation Engineering. By introducing the study of a relevant existing case in the course, the gap between theories and field applications can be effectively bridged. It is therefore no wonder that recent years have seen increased emphasis on problem-based learning in the delivery of engineering courses. In …
Analysis Of Piled-Raft Foundation For Cai Mep Container Port, Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Hai, Bengt H. Fellenius
Analysis Of Piled-Raft Foundation For Cai Mep Container Port, Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Hai, Bengt H. Fellenius
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
During the last decade, a series of ports are being built along the Thi Vai River in the Mekong delta approximately 80 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The ports are built on reclaimed ground over an about 30 to 40 m thick deposit of soft, normally consolidated, compressible clay deposited on dense to compact sand The deep foundation system typically used for buildings in this region consists of pretensioned spun high strength concrete piles driven to significant toe bearing in dense soils. Because of the anticipated significant costs of this solution, a more economical alternative foundation system …
Full-Scale Load Testing Of 57-Year Old Raymond Piles For Foundation Re-Use, Vishnu Diyaljee
Full-Scale Load Testing Of 57-Year Old Raymond Piles For Foundation Re-Use, Vishnu Diyaljee
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The proposed reconstruction of a demolished coke battery superstructure of a steel mill to a level higher than originally constructed in 1952 required the evaluation of the geotechnical resistance and settlement characteristics of its existing foundation piles. Except for design drawings showing the layout of the substructure elements and the borehole logs, there were neither as-built drawings nor any records available about the design and construction of the piles. A total of nine (9) axial compressive load tests were initially undertaken. Two (2) 19 ft long piles were initially tested under the pusher tracks, and a further seven (7) piles …
Historical Application Of Screw-Piles And Screw-Cylinder Foundations For 19th Century Ocean Piers, Alan J. Lutenegger
Historical Application Of Screw-Piles And Screw-Cylinder Foundations For 19th Century Ocean Piers, Alan J. Lutenegger
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Iron Screw-Pile foundations were first introduced by Alexander Mitchell in the middle of the 19th Century for support of offshore lighthouses in shallow water ocean environments. Large diameter Screw-Piles with helical blades ranging from 2.5 ft. to 4 ft. in diameter were routinely used during this period and were constructed with either a solid iron central shaft (Screw-Pile) or a large diameter hollow cylindrical pipe shaft (Screw-Cylinder). Soon after their introduction, Screw-Piles and Screw-Cylinders were being used in pier construction, to allow ocean front piers to be constructed quickly and economically in many parts of the world, while at the …
Response Of Piled Raft Foundation On Soft Clay Under Seismic Load, Alireza Saeedi Azizkandi, Tara Maali, Mohammad Hassan Baziar
Response Of Piled Raft Foundation On Soft Clay Under Seismic Load, Alireza Saeedi Azizkandi, Tara Maali, Mohammad Hassan Baziar
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
A number of researchers has extensively investigated the vertical load bearing mechanism of piled raft foundation, by applying elasticity theory and finite element method. The study on the load bearing mechanism under horizontal loading or during earthquakes, however, is very limited. This is partially because piled raft foundations are considered as raft foundations in the current design practice. Since the behavior of a piled raft foundation during earthquakes is considered fairly complex due to dynamic interaction among a raft, piles and a soil, the design procedure should include the effect of this mechanism in an appropriate manner. In other hands, …
A Case History Of Deep Excavation In Doha, L. Tony Chen
A Case History Of Deep Excavation In Doha, L. Tony Chen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
The Doha high-rise tower consists of a 4 level basement which required an excavation depth of 16m along the site perimeter. Minimization of impact of excavation-induced ground movements on the adjacent structures and underground utilities was one of the major considerations in the design and construction of the excavation and its temporary retaining system. The temporary retaining system initially consisted of anchored secant pile walls with toe grouting along the entire site perimeter. After excessive movement was detected on one section of the southern wall, inclined steel bracing was installed inside the excavation as a remedial measure to provide additional …
Calculation Of Natural Frequency Of Earth Dams By Means Of Analytical Solution, Maryam Mahdizadeh, Ali Ghanbari
Calculation Of Natural Frequency Of Earth Dams By Means Of Analytical Solution, Maryam Mahdizadeh, Ali Ghanbari
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Earth dams are 3-Dimensional, huge and inhomogeneous structures that interact with water and soil. They are the most common type of dams used in the world and developing countries like Iran. Seismic analysis of earth dam is very important in regions which have been subjected with earthquake impaction several times. Calculating the natural frequency of dams is the essential part for its seismic behavior analysis. So it is very important to present an appropriate solution for calculation of natural frequency. Natural frequency of earth dams is usually calculated by means of experimental correlations, shear beam analysis (base on the height …

Case Histories Of Failure Of Deep Excavation. Examination Of Where Things Went Wrong: Nicoll Highway Collapse, Singapore, John Endicott
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
During the construction of Contract C824 of the Circle Line in Singapore, on 20th April 2004 an 80 m long section of excavation, 30 m deep, totally collapsed. The resulting crater was as deep as 15 metres and was more than 100 m in diameter. Six lanes of the adjacent Nicoll Highway subsided by as much as 13 m. Four construction workers were killed. Fortunately no vehicle was involved. A Committee of Inquiry was established and held hearings from August 2004 until March 2005. The findings of the Committee were published in May 2005. These identified the causes of the …

Design Details To Accommodate Fault Movement In A Dam Foundation, Peter A. Dickson, Joseph R. Kovacich, Georgios Raptis
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
During planning for dam projects, good practice usually calls for appropriate investigations to help assure the development is not located on or immediately adjacent to active faults. There are examples of projects, however, where an active fault has been discovered in or close to a dam foundation and engineering solutions have been incorporated into design to enable satisfactory performance of the dam should fault displacement occur during project operation. In some cases, the existence of such hazards only becomes evident late in the design cycle when the dam site is considered fixed and hazard avoidance is not an easy option. …
Investigating The Performance Of Ground Anchor Through The Failure Slope Disaster In Taiwan, Ching-Jiang Jeng, Yen-Cheng Chen
Investigating The Performance Of Ground Anchor Through The Failure Slope Disaster In Taiwan, Ching-Jiang Jeng, Yen-Cheng Chen
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
At milestone 3.1 km of the Formosa Freeway in northern Taiwan, a landslide occurred on April 25, 2000, causing nearly 200,000 m3 of earth and rock to slump down onto the freeway below. Four people trapped in cars beneath the collapsed slope died. How such a tremendous slope failure could happen in dry weather without advanced warning is attributed to two key factors: (1) Long-term groundwater infiltration resulting in the softening of thin interlayer between sandstone and shale; (2) Ground anchor corrosion resulting in a decrease in slope stability. Together these two factors caused the slope to reach a …
Lessons Learned From The Disaster At Lippe Canal Bridge, Markus Herten, Eva Dornecker
Lessons Learned From The Disaster At Lippe Canal Bridge, Markus Herten, Eva Dornecker
International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
In October 2005, during construction works at the new Lippe canal bridge, massive water leakage from the Dortmund-Ems-Canal occurred below a wing wall at the northern abutment of the old, still operated canal bridge. Water passed through a leak of the claylined canal, flowing underneath a pile-supported wing wall into a minor excavation pit. This excavation pit was supposed to be protected by a surcharge filter. Since failure of the lining should be considered for all construction phases, it cannot be regarded as the cause of the disaster. Consequently, the paper focuses on the verification against hydraulic heave and erosion …
