A Tangible Modeling Language For Systems Engineering, Maissane Aik Mar 2026

A Tangible Modeling Language For Systems Engineering, Maissane Aik

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

With the continuous growth of technology and system complexity, systems engineering plays a crucial role in ensuring performance, adaptability, and clarity across interconnected processes. Yet, as modeling tools become increasingly abstract and dependent on digital infrastructures, they have drifted away from the tangible, intuitive ways humans naturally think, communicate, and design. Current modeling approaches often require engineers to navigate numerous diagrams and layers of abstraction. To address the gap, this research will focus on creating a novel systems engineering language that reintroduces tangibility into system modeling. The proposed language will represent system elements as modular blocks that capture structure, behavior, …

Computational Study Of Slosh Dynamics And Active Slosh Damping In Spacecraft Propellant Tanks Equipped With A Magneto Active Propellant Management Device, Priyanshu Savaliya

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The management of liquid propellant in microgravity remains one of the longest-standing issues in spacecraft design. Traditional passive damping techniques using baffles or diaphragms tend to add structural mass and complexity. The current study proposes a novel active slosh damping device which dynamically adjusts the rheology of the damper fluid using electromagnets, simulated in ANSYS Fluent, to actively manage and dampen slosh in an oscillatory excited cylindrical propellant tank. The electromagnetic fields are modulated through a User-Defined Function (UDF) that responds to force feedback simulated in real time via virtual load cells. In Fluent, the interface dynamics of xenon, fuel, …

A Causal Inference Methodology For Root-Cause Diagnosis In Nonstationary Industrial Time Series, Cansu Yalim Mar 2026

A Causal Inference Methodology For Root-Cause Diagnosis In Nonstationary Industrial Time Series, Cansu Yalim

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

Industrial fault diagnosis lacks a procedure that learns time-varying causal structure from observational time series, makes identifiability limits explicit, and uses intervention-based reasoning to support root-cause assessment under industrial constraints. Although predictive maintenance can reduce downtime, diagnosis is often expert-rule-based or association-driven; pipelines may elevate downstream symptoms alongside true drivers and provide limited guidance on which feasible action would change a fault trajectory under current operating conditions. Because operating phases and fault progression create regime shifts, industrial systems rarely follow a single stable mechanism. This study develops and evaluates a three-stage, regime-aware causal diagnostic protocol based on a time-varying Dynamic …

Today is an age of exiting emerging technology where cutting-edge research in autonomous vehicles (AVs) reduces the active human participation in driving and extends awareness beyond human limitations of perception and reaction, improving driving safety and quality of the user experience as a result. The ever-increasing complexity of these autonomous systems poses many challenges towards the validation and verification (V\&V) of these complex systems under time and resource constraints, as the use of artificial intelligence and also the intricacy of the operating environment means that these systems are also black-box and non-deterministic. Scenario-based V\&V testing of such systems, which involves …

A Data-Driven Framework For Modeling Car-Following Behavior Using Conditional Transfer Entropy And Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Poorendra Ramlall Mar 2026

A Data-Driven Framework For Modeling Car-Following Behavior Using Conditional Transfer Entropy And Dynamic Mode Decomposition, Poorendra Ramlall

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Accurate modeling of car-following behavior is essential for understanding traffic dynamics and enabling predictive control in intelligent transportation systems. This study presents a novel data-driven framework that combines information-theoretic input selection via conditional transfer entropy (CTE) with dynamic mode decomposition with control (DMDc) for identifying and forecasting car-following dynamics. In the first step, CTE is employed to identify the specific vehicles that exert directional influence on a given subject vehicle, thereby systematically determining the relevant control inputs for modeling its behavior. In the second step, DMDc is applied to estimate and predict the dynamics by reconstructing the closed-form expression of …

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into aviation systems, understanding its implications for safety and regulation is critical. This research examines the current state of AI implementation in aviation, exploring both transformative benefits and significant concerns in this high-stakes environment. AI's strengths, including rapid large-scale data processing, predictive capabilities, and pattern recognition, offer substantial operational advantages. However, these benefits must be balanced against key concerns including liability issues, potential loss of pilot competency through over-reliance, the "black box" problem of AI explainability, emergent system behaviors, and training requirements.  This project analyzes current regulatory frameworks from major aviation authorities including …

Enhancing Aviation Safety: A Framework For Predictive Maintenance Using Generative Data Augmentation And Uncertainty Quantification, Muhammad Najjar Mar 2026

Enhancing Aviation Safety: A Framework For Predictive Maintenance Using Generative Data Augmentation And Uncertainty Quantification, Muhammad Najjar

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Predictive maintenance is a critical component of aviation safety, yet the development of accurate data-driven models is often hindered by the severe class imbalance inherent in real-world flight data; healthy flights are abundant, while flights preceding a failure are rare. This imbalance biases machine learning models, leading to poor detection of critical maintenance needs. This project addresses this challenge by leveraging the NGAFID aviation maintenance dataset to develop and validate an integrated predictive framework. We propose training a Time-series Generative Adversarial Network (TimeGAN) to synthesize high-fidelity, realistic "pre-maintenance" flight data. This synthetic data is used to create a balanced training …

Developing Low-Cost Gnss Remote Sensing Hardware To Measure Precipitable Water Vapor For Flash Flood Nowcasting In Southern Appalachia, Austin Gleydura Mar 2026

Developing Low-Cost Gnss Remote Sensing Hardware To Measure Precipitable Water Vapor For Flash Flood Nowcasting In Southern Appalachia, Austin Gleydura

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Flash flood prediction in Southern Appalachia is particularly challenging due to steep terrain, narrow valleys, highly localized rainfall patterns, and limited measurement coverage. Traditional remote sensing methods, such as Doppler radar and microwave radiometry, suffer from reduced resolution at extended range and signal blockage by mountains, while satellite instruments like MODIS lack sufficient spatio-temporal resolution for sub-kilometer measurements critical to flash flood nowcasting. GNSS-Meteorology offers an established alternative for measuring precipitable water vapor (PWV) and is currently integrated into several numerical weather models. Recent research demonstrates that GNSS-derived PWV products can be used to accurately predict rainfall intensity and timing …
