The Elimination Of Waste In Higher Education: Prescriptions For Doing The Right Things The Right Way, Michael Hayden, Randy Peters

International Conference on Lean Six Sigma

The authors defined waste in higher education and describe proven strategies to reduce waste, from and engineering and technical background, informed by HE administrative perspectives. It is important to categorize waste and then prioritize it because effort should be spent on eliminating the waste that has the greatest potential to improve the efficiency of the entire system. Waste can only be dealt with by someone with the span of control over that waste.

Integrated Literature Review Of Information Technology Leadership In Higher Education: Implications For Total Quality Management, Louis Hickman, Mesut Akdere

International Conference on Lean Six Sigma

The current shortage of highly skilled employees across the country continues to be a concern for our higher education (HE) institutions. Information technology (IT) is used in a variety of ways to expand the reach of education, from distance education, simulation technology, Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and more. Additionally, public HE institutions face flat and decreasing funding. IT departments are responsible for identifying transformational change opportunities, implementing technologies that expand the reach of our universities, and operating efficiently with flat funding. Therefore, identifying effective IT leadership practices to enable change and reduce costs is vital to success for modern …

Workshop 1c: Student Presentation: Decision-Making Swarms, Xinyu Guan, Andriy Sheptunov, Nicholas Nusgart, George Jeno Apr 2017

Workshop 1c: Student Presentation: Decision-Making Swarms, Xinyu Guan, Andriy Sheptunov, Nicholas Nusgart, George Jeno

IMSAloquium Student Investigation Showcase

While swarms that execute decisions are well known in the swarm community, swarms that exhibit this capability a priori have never before been achieved. We demonstrate a methodology, based on the Hamiltonian method of swarm design, that enables the design and implementation of swarms that exhibit decision-making capability. We develop the theoretical structure of the method and apply it to the development of an ant algorithm and a swarm capable of deciding whether its density exceeds a specific predetermined value. The swarm designs are validated in simulation.

Testing The Feasibility Of A Bladeless Wind Turbine Design, Chukwuemeka C. Ibebuike, Hauke Busch

Georgia College Student Research Events

In this era of increased global warming, the immediate reduction of CO2 emission is of great importance to the survival of humanity. Wind power can go a long way to offer a better alternative to generate sustainable power without producing any CO2 gas. The reductions of CO2 emissions are of significant importance to humanity. Wind power can offer a better alternative to generate sustainable power without producing CO2. Traditional turbines consist of rotating blades while a Bladeless turbine would significantly simplify the design. This would offer possible improvements such as cost savings, reduction of the operating noise level, simplification of …

Testing Effectiveness Of Aqueous Phases From Struvite And Hydroxyapatite Mineral Precipitation As Algal Nutrient Sources, Aaron Lyons Apr 2017

Testing Effectiveness Of Aqueous Phases From Struvite And Hydroxyapatite Mineral Precipitation As Algal Nutrient Sources, Aaron Lyons

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

As interest in algal biofuel grows, the need to explore diverse nutrient sources for growing algae becomes apparent. Struvite and Hydroxyapatite (HAP) were precipitated after flash hydrolysis. The leftover aqueous phase (AP) could serve as nutrients source for algae cultivation and the potential reuse of this waste stream is promising. To test this, 12 bottles of Scenedemus sp., four of Struvite, four of HAP, and four control AM-14 synthetic media were cultivated. 10% of the Phosphorus in the synthetic media was replaced with phosphorous from the struvite AP, and 10% of the nitrogen in the synthetic media was replaced …

Students in an air traffic control program are required to learn and apply advance knowledge and skills in a limited time frame. All students learn at different rates as well as through different learning styles. Swivl is a video capture tool designed to enhance student learning by allowing students to refer back to their individual classroom lab training session videos via an online portal. Swivl is being utilized in two ATC lab courses. During this research, two technological shortcomings were discovered: (1) Swivl lacks the ability to capture audio from the COA’s existing communication software and (2) Swivl cannot focus …

Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Operations Into The National Airspace System, Benjamin Cook, Holly Hughes, Kyle Wilkerson, Allison Little

Discovery Day - Prescott

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are expected to dominate the National Airspace System (NAS) in the near future. One particular barrier preventing the integration of unmanned aircraft into the NAS is the lack of standardized procedures for distinguishing and communicating with remote UAS operators. In preparation for adopting unmanned flight operations into a complex control system, it is important to identify solutions to effectively control UAS in the NAS. To achieve simultaneous safe manned and unmanned aircraft operations in the NAS, the Joint UAS and ATC Team (JUAT) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) are developing a system that could be used …

Undergraduate Research On General Aviation Hypoxia: A Student’S Perspective, Claire Schindler Mar 2017

Undergraduate Research On General Aviation Hypoxia: A Student’S Perspective, Claire Schindler

Discovery Day - Prescott

During the fall academic term of 2016, an opportunity arose through the College of Aviation to serve as an undergraduate research assistant. Through discussion with faculty mentors, it was decided that a severely overlooked aspect of the aviation industry was survivors of hypoxia, especially in the less regulated general aviation community. The problem this study addresses is the uncertainty of the common circumstances that general aviation pilots find themselves in that create a hypoxic state, as well as whether or not that pilot reported the occurrence to the proper establishments. The results of this study showed not only those that …

Airline Quality Research: A Student’S Perspective, Madeline S. Kuhn Mar 2017

Airline Quality Research: A Student’S Perspective, Madeline S. Kuhn

Discovery Day - Prescott

This study examines the relationship between the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) and the Airline Passenger Survey (APS) from an undergraduate student’s perspective, as well as how conducting undergraduate research has influenced the student researcher. Operational performance of the U.S. airline industry has been monitored for the past 27 years by a quantitative model of metrics known as the Airline Quality Rating. These metrics include on-time flights, denied boarding, mishandled baggage, and customer complaints. As the nation’s most comprehensive study of airline performance and quality, the National Airline Quality Rating (http://airlinequalityrating.com) sets the industry standard, providing consumers and aviation industry professionals …
