Investigation Of Innovative Heat Pipes / Fins System For Diesel Engine Cooling, Mohammad Shafiq Anees Mar 2025

Investigation Of Innovative Heat Pipes / Fins System For Diesel Engine Cooling, Mohammad Shafiq Anees

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Engine cooling is considered one of the most important factors that affect their efficiency and therefore their performance, so a new cooling method is proposed using both heat pipes and fins to improve the cooling quality of internal combustion engines and shall be examined theoretically and experimentally. A test rig has been designed and built using a specimen material with similar properties to the real engine materials with similar dimensions as the engine cylinder head / liner thickness. In order to make the effectiveness of this research, a comparison between the cooling by fins alone and cooling the engine by …

Research Symposium

Background: Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial-type mucosa outside the uterine cavity. It affects about 6.5 million women of reproductive age in the United States. It is a leading cause of infertility, impacting up to 50% of women with difficulty conceiving, and is prevalent in as many as 90% of individuals experiencing severe, chronic pelvic pain. Women with endometriosis had 4.2-fold higher ovarian cancer risk than those without endometriosis. Within this work, a range of liposomal formulations was investigated for endometriosis. Recent studies confirmed the role of miR-205-5p as a potential suppressor of ectopic endometriotic progression. Clinical translation …

Electrochemical Detection Of Dopamine Using Screen-Printed Graphene Electrode For Cancer Diagnosis And Therapy, Pritu P. Sarkar, Nazmul Islam Mar 2025

Electrochemical Detection Of Dopamine Using Screen-Printed Graphene Electrode For Cancer Diagnosis And Therapy, Pritu P. Sarkar, Nazmul Islam

Research Symposium

Background: Dopamine plays a critical role in various essential functions, including motor control, hormone regulation, cognition, learning, and the reward system. In healthy individuals, dopamine levels are extremely low, with concentrations ranging from 0 to 0.25 nM in blood and 0.3 to 3.13 µM in urine. Abnormal levels are linked to disorders like Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, hypertension, and arrhythmia. Abnormal dopamine levels can indicate the presence of certain cancers. Dopamine receptors may be therapeutic targets for treating cancer, especially breast and colon cancer. Thus dopamine can increase the efficacy of anticancer drugs in breast and colon cancer. Detecting dopamine …

Effect Of Walking Speed And Asymmetric Loading On Human Gait, Dumitru I. Caruntu, Alfirio Trejo, Eric Rodriguez, Camila T. Alvarez Barriga Mar 2025

Effect Of Walking Speed And Asymmetric Loading On Human Gait, Dumitru I. Caruntu, Alfirio Trejo, Eric Rodriguez, Camila T. Alvarez Barriga

Research Symposium

Background: Human gait is influenced by factors such as walking speed and carrying heavy objects asymmetrically. Understanding these effects enhances rehabilitation research for individuals recovering from leg injuries. Clinical angles of the knee, derived from experimental data, provide insights into movement patterns, revealing abnormalities or compensations. Calculating these angles requires a joint coordinate system (JCS) for the knee joint.

Methods: This study employed the VICON motion analysis system with ten infrared cameras arranged circularly for comprehensive gait analysis. Reflective markers placed on anatomical landmarks facilitated motion capture, recorded at 100 Hz. Data processing included filtering, establishing a JCS, …

Muscle Force Analysis In Patients With Forefoot Amputees And Healthy Subjects During Walking, Anthony Melgar, Dumitru Caruntu, Javier La Fontaine, Luis Venegas, Hafizur Rahman Mar 2025

Muscle Force Analysis In Patients With Forefoot Amputees And Healthy Subjects During Walking, Anthony Melgar, Dumitru Caruntu, Javier La Fontaine, Luis Venegas, Hafizur Rahman

Research Symposium

Forefoot amputation, a type of partial foot amputation, involves the surgical disarticulation of either the interphalangeal or metatarsophalangeal joints. This procedure not only removes critical joint structures but also alters the positioning of associated muscles. Forefoot amputations significantly affect gait patterns and redistribute plantar pressure maps across the plantar surface of the foot. The phalanges are crucial in absorbing and redistributing plantar pressure during the gait cycle. The absence of phalanges and the loss of metatarsophalangeal joints alter the normal pressure distribution maps, possibly shifting peak pressure from one local foot region to another region of the foot. This research …

Increasing Guard Band Size To Decrease Interference In V2x Communication, Nakira Oglesby, Mackenzie Prescott, Billy Kihei, Ph.D. Feb 2025

Increasing Guard Band Size To Decrease Interference In V2x Communication, Nakira Oglesby, Mackenzie Prescott, Billy Kihei, Ph.D.

Symposium of Student Scholars

As technologies evolve and new devices are introduced, the demand for fast and reliable vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication increases. As this demand increases, the interference level in the 5.9GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) band will inevitably increase. And thus, the task of somehow minimizing this interference becomes increasingly important as time passes. This report investigates the effects of increasing the guard band size of the lower 5.9 GHz DSRC band on the adjacent channel interference from Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure 4 band (U-NII-4) devices and to try and see if there is a significant decrease in the interference level. The …

was developed by combining the KLA T150 nanoscale tensile tester

and a custom-fabricated thermal measurement sensor. The

development of an experimental method for measuring the thermal

conductivity of nanomaterials under mechanical testing

simultaneously will contribute to the development of novel

materials for flexible electronics by helping us to better

understand the strain effect on their thermal performance.

Interestingly, the …

Machine Learning And Shap Interpretability For Chronic Disease Understanding, Nnaemeka Charles Igwe, Khandaker Mamun Ahmed

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, are major global health concerns influenced by various health parameters and lifestyle choices. Traditional methods struggle to efficiently predict and manage these conditions due to the complexity and diversity of medical data. There is a need to leverage machine learning algorithms and modern computational tools to accurately predict diabetes, improve diagnosis, and provide actionable insights for better healthcare outcomes. In this project we study the application of machine learning methods for predicting NCDs such as diabetes. Moreover, we leverage hyperparameter tuning techniques for model development and SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) for results interpretations and …

Generative Ai For Synthetic Data Creation: Building Mastery-Focused Educational Datasets, Tapiwa Amion Chinodakufa, Khandaker Mamun Ahmed

SDSU Data Science Symposium

Synthetic data is artificially generated data that mimics the statistical properties of real world data without exposing sensitive information. It is used in analysis, research, and deployments. Educational technology (EdTech) is an area where synthetic data can solve the problems of data scarcity, privacy concerns, regulatory compliance, bias reduction, data quality, data integrity, and cost efficiency. Our research aims to generate synthetic educational dataset by leveraging generative AI techniques such as Autoencoder, variational autoencoder and Copula-GAN. Our experimental results shows the significant progress in generating educational dataset and represents the data distribution of synthetic and real data.
