The Biomechanics Of The Tendu In Closing To The Traditional Position, Pli#233; And Relev#233;, Nyssa Catherine Masters
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dancers spend many years practicing repetitive movements in order for their bodies to gain flexibility, strength and muscle memory. This thesis investigated the biomechanics of a dance student's knee motion during a tendu to the front in first, third, and fifth positions. A dancer will often perform 75 or more tendu closing actions during one technique class - particularly in ballet technique. During a tendu the moving foot moves along the floor but the toes never leave the floor. The tendu is used to strengthen the leg muscles, particularly the quadriceps and gluteal muscles. Flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, and rotation angles of …

Understanding Pedestrian And Bicyclist Compliance And Safety Impacts Of Different Walk Modes At Signalized Intersections For A Livable Community, Jacob Allen Mirabella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With increasing energy costs as well as rampant congestion in major U.S. cities, the popularity of walk and bike mode choices have increased in recent years. Thus, the obtainment of a comprehensive knowledge of pedestrian and bicyclist behaviors is of great importance.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 11.1%#37; of pedestrian fatalities and 18.5%#37; of bicyclist fatalities in the U.S. occurred in Florida in 2011, which accounts for just 6.1%#37; of the nation's population. Additionally, intersections are hotspots for vehicle-pedestrian conflicts, which is confirmed by the Federal Highway Administration's estimate that nearly one in five pedestrian fatalities occur …

Assessing Appropriate Technology Handwashing Stations In Mali, West Africa, Colleen Claire Naughton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Proper hand hygiene is the most effective and efficient method to prevent over 1.3 million deaths annually from diarrheal disease and Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs). Hand hygiene is also indispensable in achieving the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to reduce the childhood mortality rate by 2/3rds between 1990 and 2015. Handwashing has been found in a systematic review of studies to reduce diarrhea by 47%#37; and is, thus, capable of preventing a million deaths (Curtis et. al., 2003). Despite this evidence, hand washing rates remain seriously low in the developing world (Scott et al., 2008).

Evaluating Cfrp-Masonry Bond Using Thermal Imaging, Joseph Christopher Ross
Evaluating Cfrp-Masonry Bond Using Thermal Imaging, Joseph Christopher Ross
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study presents results from non-destructive testing to evaluate the degradation of the CFRP-masonry bond using thermal imaging. The goal of the research was to identify locations where there was evidence of bond deterioration that could subsequently be verified through destructive pull-off testing.
Four full-scale masonry walls were built outdoors at the University of South Florida in 1995 to evaluate the effectiveness of CFRP for repairing settlement damage. Two of the settlement-damaged walls were repaired using single layer, commercially available unidirectional CFRP systems that used Tonen (wall 3) and Henkel (wall 2) epoxies. These two walls were the subject of …
Kelvin Probe Electrode For Contactless Potential Measurement On Concrete-Properties And Applications, Michael Thomas Walsh
Kelvin Probe Electrode For Contactless Potential Measurement On Concrete-Properties And Applications, Michael Thomas Walsh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The practical feasibility of using a Kelvin Probe as a novel reference electrode in the measurement of both potential and polarization pulse response of reinforcing steel in concrete is demonstrated. Potential values measured using a KP reflect greater stability and repeatability than can typically be attained with conventional reference electrodes. Duplicate reinforced concrete beam test specimens with well-differentiated centrally corroding rebar segments were analyzed using both the Kelvin Probe (KP) and a conventional Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE). Potential profile maps were developed using potential values recorded under static conditions with both the SCE and the KP. Nominal polarization resistance was …
Development Of Nanostructured Graphene/Conducting Polymer Composite Materials For Supercapacitor Applications, Punya A. Basnayaka
Development Of Nanostructured Graphene/Conducting Polymer Composite Materials For Supercapacitor Applications, Punya A. Basnayaka
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The developments in mobile/portable electronics and alternative energy vehicles prompted engineers and researchers to develop electrochemical energy storage devices called supercapacitors, as the third generation type capacitors. Most of the research and development on supercapacitors focus on electrode materials, electrolytes and hybridization. Some attempts have been directed towards increasing the energy density by employing electroactive materials, such as metal oxides and conducting polymers (CPs). However, the high cost and toxicity of applicable metal oxides and poor long term stability of CPs paved the way to alternative electrode materials. The electroactive materials with carbon particles in composites have been used substantially …
Effect Of Localized Corrosion Of Steel On Chloride-Induced Concrete Cover Cracking In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Ezeddin Rafaa Busba
Effect Of Localized Corrosion Of Steel On Chloride-Induced Concrete Cover Cracking In Reinforced Concrete Structures, Ezeddin Rafaa Busba
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract: Concrete cover cracking due to reinforcement corrosion is widely accepted as a limit-state indicator in defining the end of functional service life for existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures undergoing corrosion. Many of the currently available durability prediction models are incapable of providing realistic estimates of remaining service lives of RC structures beyond the corrosion initiation point. Therefore, the need to incorporate the length of the corrosion propagation stage in a comprehensive durability prediction approach has recently received much research attention. Previous research focus however was mostly limited to the case of uniformly corroding reinforcement with only few studies addressing …
Application And Characterization Of Self-Assembled Monolayers In Hybrid Electronic Systems, Michael Enoch Celesin
Application And Characterization Of Self-Assembled Monolayers In Hybrid Electronic Systems, Michael Enoch Celesin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we explore ultra-thin insulators of organic and inorganic composition and their potential role as high-speed rectifiers. Typical applications for these structures include IR sensing, chemical detection, high speed logic circuits, and MEMS enhancements. While there are many elements in the functional group required to create a rectifying antenna (rectenna), the primary thrust of this work is on the rectifier element itself.
To achieve these research goals, a very good understanding of quantum tunneling was required to model the underlying phenomenon of charge conduction. The development of a multi-variable optimization routine for tunneling prediction was required. MATLAB was …
Magnetization Dynamics And Related Phenomena In Nanostructures, Sayan Chandra
Magnetization Dynamics And Related Phenomena In Nanostructures, Sayan Chandra
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Collective magnetic behavior in nanostructures is a phenomenon commonly observed in various magnetic systems. It arises due to competing inter/intra–particle interactions and size distribution and can manifest in phenomena like magnetic freezing, magnetic aging, and exchange bias (EB) effect. In order to probe these rather complex phenomena, conventional DC and AC magnetic measurements have been performed along with radio–frequency transverse susceptibility (TS) measurements. We also demonstrate the magnetic entropy change as a parameter sensitive to subtle changes in the magnetization dynamics of nanostructures. The focus of this dissertation is to study the collective magnetic behavior in core-shell nanostructures of Fe/γ–Fe …
Static And Dynamic Components Of Droplet Friction, Peter Robert Griffiths
Static And Dynamic Components Of Droplet Friction, Peter Robert Griffiths
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As digital microfluidics has continued to mature since its advent in the early 1980's, an increase in new and novel applications of this technology have been developed. However, even as this technology has become more common place, a consensus on the physics and force models of the motion of the contact line between the fluid, substrate, and ambient has not been reached. This uncertainty along with the dependence of the droplet geometry on the force to cause its motion has directed much of the research at specific geometries and droplet actuation methods.
The goal of this thesis is to help …
Corrosion Of Post-Tensioning Strands In Ungrouted Ducts - Unstressed Condition, Michael John Hutchison
Corrosion Of Post-Tensioning Strands In Ungrouted Ducts - Unstressed Condition, Michael John Hutchison
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent failures and severe corrosion distress of post-tensioned (PT) bridges in Florida have revealed corrosion of the 7-wire strands in tendons. Post-tensioned duct assemblies are fitted with multiple 7-wire steel strands and ducts are subsequently filled with grout. During construction, the length of time from the moment in which the strands have been inserted into the ducts, until the ducts are grouted, is referred to as the `ungrouted' period. During this phase, the steel strands are vulnerable to corrosion and consequently the length of this period is restricted (typically to 7 days) by construction guidelines. This investigation focuses on determining …

Synthesis Of Titanium Dioxide Photocatalyst With The Aid Of Supercritical Fluids, Haitao Li
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) emerged as one of the most popular photocatalysts since 1970's. However, its photocatalytic activity requires UV irradiation due to its large band gap unless further functionalization or modifications are performed. Furthermore, recovery issue has always been a major drawback, if the more effective form nano particles are utilized.
The key objectives of this research were synthesizing new TiO2 based photocatalyst systems that are effective with both the UV and the visible light while utilizing novel superior environmentally friendly techniques enabling development of nano-structured photocatalysts that can be easily recovered. In this dissertation research, highly porous nano-structured TiO2/WO3/Fe3+ …

Towards Rans Parameterization Of Vertical Mixing By Langmuir Turbulence In Shallow Coastal Shelves, Nityanand Sinha
Towards Rans Parameterization Of Vertical Mixing By Langmuir Turbulence In Shallow Coastal Shelves, Nityanand Sinha
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Langmuir turbulence in the upper ocean is generated by the interaction between the wind-driven shear current and the Stokes drift velocity induced by surface gravity waves. In homogenous (neutrally stratified) shallow water, the largest scales of Langmuir turbulence are characterized by full-depth Langmuir circulation (LC). LC consists of parallel counter-rotating vortices aligned roughly in the direction of the wind. In shallow coastal shelves, LC has been observed engulfing the entire water column, interacting with the boundary layer and serving as an important mechanism for sediment re-suspension.
In this research, large-eddy simulations (LES) of Langmuir turbulence with full-depth LC in a …

Flexible Urban Drainage Systems In New Land-Use Areas, Jochen Eckart
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urban drainage systems are influenced by several future drivers that affect the performance as well as the costs of the systems. The uncertainties associated with future drivers and their impact creates difficulties in designing urban drainage systems sustainably. A review of the different future drivers for urban drainage systems illustrates that no sufficient future predictions for the long operational life spans of the systems are possible. This dissertation contends that to deal with future uncertainties, flexibility in urban drainage systems is necessary.
At present, profound insights about defining, measuring, and generating flexible urban drainage systems do not exist. This research …

Surface Mass Transfer In Large Eddy Simulation (Les) Of Langmuir Turbulence, Cigdem Akan
Surface Mass Transfer In Large Eddy Simulation (Les) Of Langmuir Turbulence, Cigdem Akan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the past century the study of gas exchange rates between the atmosphere and the ocean has received increased attention because of concern about the fate of greenhouse gases such as CO2 released into the atmosphere. Of interest is the oceanic uptake of CO2 in shallow water coastal regions as biological productivity in these regions is on average about three times larger than in the open ocean. It is well-known that in the absence of breaking surface waves, the water side turbulence controls gas transfer of sparingly soluble gases such as CO2 from the air to the …

Abstract
Travel time reliability is defined as the consistency or dependability in travel times during a specified period of time under stated conditions, and it can be used for evaluating the performance of traffic networks based on LOS (Level of Service) of the HCM (Highway Capacity Manual). Travel time reliability is also one of the most understood measures for road users to perceive the current traffic conditions, and help them make smart decisions on route choices, and hence avoid unnecessary delays (Liu & Ma, 2009). Therefore, travel time reliability on urban arterials has become a major concern for daily commuters, …
Innovative Desalination Systems Using Low-Grade Heat, Chennan Li
Innovative Desalination Systems Using Low-Grade Heat, Chennan Li
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Water and energy crises have forced researchers to seek alternative water and energy sources. Seawater desalination can contribute towards meeting the increasing demand for fresh water using alternative energy sources like low-grade heat. Industrial waste heat, geothermal, solar thermal, could help to ease the energy crisis.
Unfortunately, the efficiency of the conventional power cycle becomes
uneconomically low with low-grade heat sources, while, at the same time, seawater desalination requires more energy than a conventional water treatment process. However, heat discarded from low-grade heat power cycles could be used as part of desalination energy sources with seawater being used as coolant …
