A Dynamically Configurable Log-Based Distributed Security Event Detection Methodology Using Simple Event Correlator, Justin M. Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Log event correlation is an effective means of detecting system faults and security breaches encountered in information technology environments. Centralized, database-driven log event correlation is common, but suffers from flaws such as high network bandwidth utilization, significant requirements for system resources, and difficulty in detecting certain suspicious behaviors. This research presents a distributed event correlation system which performs security event detection, and compares it with a centralized alternative. The comparison measures the value in distributed event correlation by considering network bandwidth utilization, detection capability and database query efficiency, as well as through the implementation of remote configuration scripts and correlation …

Mission Assurance: A Review Of Continuity Of Operations Guidance For Application To Cyber Incident Mission Impact Assessment (Cimia), Brian L. Hale Jun 2010

Mission Assurance: A Review Of Continuity Of Operations Guidance For Application To Cyber Incident Mission Impact Assessment (Cimia), Brian L. Hale

Theses and Dissertations

Military organizations have embedded information technology (IT) into their core mission processes as a means to increase operational efficiency, improve decision-making quality, and shorten the sensor-to-shooter cycle. This IT-to-mission dependence can place the organizational mission at risk when an information incident (e.g., the loss or manipulation of a critical information resource) occurs. Non-military organizations typically address this type of IT risk through an introspective, enterprise-wide focused risk management program that continuously identifies, prioritizes, and documents risks so an economical set of control measures (e.g., people, processes, technology) can be selected to mitigate the risks to an acceptable level. The explicit …

Architectural Considerations For Single Operator Management Of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Gabriel T. Bugajski Jun 2010

Architectural Considerations For Single Operator Management Of Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Gabriel T. Bugajski

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have become ubiquitous in military battlefield operations due to their intelligence collection capabilities. However, these unmanned systems consistently demonstrate limitations and shortfalls with respect to size, weight, range, line of sight and information management. The United States Air Force Unmanned Aircraft Systems Flight Plan 2009-2047 describes an action plan for improved UAS employment which calls out single operator, multi-vehicle mission configurations. This thesis analyzes the information architecture using future concepts of operations, such as biologically-inspired flocking mechanisms. The analysis and empirical results present insight into the engineering of single-operator multiple-vehicle architectures.

Use Of Negation In Search, Kristen M. Lancaster Jun 2010

Use Of Negation In Search, Kristen M. Lancaster

Theses and Dissertations

Boolean algebra was developed in the 1840s. Since that time, negation, one of the three basic concepts in Boolean algebra, has influenced the fields of information science and information retrieval, particularly in the modern computer era. In Web search engines, one of the present manifestations of information retrieval, little use is being made of this functionality and so little attention is given to it in the literature. This study aims to bolster the understanding of the use and usefulness of negation. Specifically, an Internet search task was developed for which negation was the most appropriate search strategy. This search task …

Recent years have seen a massive increase in illegal, suspicious, and malicious traffic traversing government and military computer networks. Some examples include illegal file distribution and disclosure of sensitive information using the BitTorrent file sharing protocol, criminals and terrorists using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies to communicate, and foreign entities exfiltrating sensitive data from government, military, and Department of Defense contractor networks. As a result of these growing threats, the TRacking and Analysis for Peer-to-Peer (TRAPP) system was developed in 2008 to detect BitTorrent and VoIP traffic of interest. The TRAPP system, designed on a Xilinx Virtex-II Pro Field …

Velocity Plume Profiles For Hall Thrusters Using Laser Diagnostic, Daniel B. Lee Jun 2010

Velocity Plume Profiles For Hall Thrusters Using Laser Diagnostic, Daniel B. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

This research built a non-intrusive laser diagnostic tool using Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and absorption techniques to measure the velocity and density plume profiles of low powered Hall thrusters. This tool was then applied to a Busek 200W Hall thruster to validate the performance against previous research on the same thruster. A laser frequency sweep through 834.72 nm produced LIF signals for ionized xenon –collected at 541.9 nm – in the thruster plume and absorption data outside the plume at a neutral transition at 834.68 nm. The absorption data provided a baseline reference to calculate the axial and radially velocity …

Natural Fibers And Fiberglass: A Technical And Economic Comparison, Justin Andrew Zsiros Jun 2010

Natural Fibers And Fiberglass: A Technical And Economic Comparison, Justin Andrew Zsiros

Theses and Dissertations

Natural fibers have received attention in recent years because of their minimal environmental impact, reasonably good properties, and low cost. There is a wide variety of natural fibers suitable for composite applications, the most common of which is flax. Flax has advantages in tensile strength, light weight, and low cost over other natural fibers. As with other natural and synthetic fibers, flax is used to reinforce both thermoset and thermoplastic matrices. When flax is used in thermoplastic matrices, polypropylene and polyethylene are the main resins used. Although at first glance flax may seem to be a cheaper alternative to fiberglass, …

Numerical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Limited Width Gravel Backfills In Increasing Lateral Passive Resistance, Mo'oud Nasr Jun 2010

Numerical Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Limited Width Gravel Backfills In Increasing Lateral Passive Resistance, Mo'oud Nasr

Theses and Dissertations

Two series of static full-scale lateral pile cap tests were conducted on pile caps with different aspect ratios, with full width (homogeneous) and limited width backfill conditions involving loose sand and dense gravel. The limited width backfills were constructed by placing a relatively narrow zone (3 to 6 ft (0.91 to 1.83 m)) of higher density gravel material adjacent to the cap with loose sand beyond the gravel zone. Test results indicated that large increases in lateral passive resistance could be expected for limited width backfills. The main focus of this study is to assess the contribution of plane strain …

A Comparative Analysis Of Methods For Baseline Drift Removal In Preterm Infant Respiration Signals, Pallavi Ramnarain Jun 2010

A Comparative Analysis Of Methods For Baseline Drift Removal In Preterm Infant Respiration Signals, Pallavi Ramnarain

Theses and Dissertations

Breathing is a vital function intrinsic to the survival of any human being. In preterm infants it is an important indicator of maturation and feeding competency, which is a hallmark for hospital release. The recommended method of measurement of infant respiration is the use of thermistors. Accurate event detection within thermistor generated signals relies heavily upon effective noise reduction, specifically baseline drift removal. Baseline drift originates from several sensor-based factors, including thermistor placement within the sensor and in relation to the infant nares. This work compares four methods for baseline drift removal using the same event detection algorithm. The methods …

Testing Guidelines For New Product Development, Derek W. Egbert Jun 2010

Testing Guidelines For New Product Development, Derek W. Egbert

Theses and Dissertations

While many literary sources outline the product development process, few make mention of the prototyping and testing stage. This thesis suggests that because of its importance in the product development process, "Testing" should be documented as a major step and not just listed as a side note. As part of the testing step, it is suggested that standardized, in-use, and market tests be used to properly evaluate a product. While many rely solely on standardized tests to validate their products, effective in-use tests can be another vital tool that can prove the performance of the product in more specific and …

Optimization And Correlation Of The Penn State Model Of Friction Stir Welding To Experimental Welds In 304l Stainless Steel, Devin Donaldson Furse

Theses and Dissertations

A numerical model of friction stir welding developed by T. DebRoy, R. Nandan, and others has been optimized to fit experimental data of eleven welds of 304L stainless steel at various weld feed rates and spindle speeds. Optimization was used to determine the values of five difficult-to-measure model parameters. The optimal parameter values were then correlated to the weld machine inputs. The mechanical efficiency and the coefficient of friction were not correlated with feed rate, spindle speed, or axial pressure. Tool slip was positively correlated with feed rate, negatively correlated with spindle speed, and not correlated with axial pressure. The …

An Ensemble-Based Computational Approach For Incremental Learning In Non-Stationary Environments Related To Schema- And Scaffolding-Based Human Learning, Ryan Elwell May 2010

An Ensemble-Based Computational Approach For Incremental Learning In Non-Stationary Environments Related To Schema- And Scaffolding-Based Human Learning, Ryan Elwell

Theses and Dissertations

The principal dilemma in a learning process, whether human or computer, is adapting to new information, especially in cases where this new information conflicts with what was previously learned. The design of computer models for incremental learning is an emerging topic for classification and prediction of large-scale data streams undergoing change in underlying class distributions (definitions) over time; yet currently, they often ignore significant foundational learning theory that has been developed in the domain of human learning. This shortfall leads to many deficiencies in the ability to organize existing knowledge and to retain relevant knowledge for long periods of time. …

Multiobjective Optimization Method For Identifying Modular Product Platforms And Modules That Account For Changing Needs Over Time, Patrick K. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Natural and predictable changes in consumer needs often require the development of new products. Providing solutions that anticipate, account for, and allow for these changes over time is a significant challenge to manufacturers and design engineers. Products that adapt to these changes through the addition of modules reduce production costs through product commonality and provide a set of products that cater to customization and adaptation. In this thesis, a multiobjective optimization design method using s-Pareto frontiers – sets of non-dominated designs from disparate design models - is developed and used to identify a set of optimal adaptive product designs that …

An Efficient Implementation Of An Exponential Random Number Generator In A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), Smitha Gautham Apr 2010

An Efficient Implementation Of An Exponential Random Number Generator In A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), Smitha Gautham

Theses and Dissertations

Many physical, biological, ecological and behavioral events occur at times and rates that are exponentially distributed. Modeling these systems requires simulators that can accurately generate a large quantity of exponentially distributed random numbers, which is a computationally intensive task. To improve the performance of these simulators, one approach is to move portions of the computationally inefficient simulation tasks from software to custom hardware implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In this work, we study efficient FPGA implementations of exponentially distributed random number generators to improve simulator performance. Our approach is to generate uniformly distributed random numbers using standard techniques …

Design And Feasibility Testing For A Ground-Based, Three-Dimensional, Ultra-High-Resolution, Synthetic Aperture Radar To Image Snowpacks, Stephen Joseph Preston

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis works through the design of a radar-based system for imaging snowpacks remotely and over large areas to assist in avalanche prediction. The key to such a system is the ability to image volumes of snow at shallow, spatially-varying angles of incidence. To achieve this prerequisite, the design calls for a ground-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capable of generating three-dimensional, ultra-high-resolution images of a snowpack. To arrive at design parameters for this SAR, the thesis works through relevant principles in avalanche mechanics, alpine-snowpack geophysics, and electromagnetic scattering theory. The thesis also works through principles of radar, SAR, antenna, and …

Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements Of The Total Cavopulmonary Connection With Circulatory Flow Augmentation, Steven Chopski Apr 2010

Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements Of The Total Cavopulmonary Connection With Circulatory Flow Augmentation, Steven Chopski

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project examined the interactive fluid dynamics between a blood pump and the univentricular Fontan circulation. 2-D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were conducted on an idealized total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) with an axial pump prototype in the inferior vena cava (IVC). Fluid velocity profiles were examined under various physiologic conditions for Fontan patients. The velocity profiles for all cases demonstrated the shunting of flow from the IVC toward the right pulmonary artery. A rotational component in the pump outflow was observed forcing flow to the periphery as compared to the flow profile without a pump present in the …

Using Buckling-Restrained Braces In Eccentric Configurations, Gary S. Prinz Apr 2010

Using Buckling-Restrained Braces In Eccentric Configurations, Gary S. Prinz

Theses and Dissertations

Ductile braced frames are often used to resist lateral earthquake loads in steel buildings; however the presence of a brace element can sometimes interfere with architectural features. One common type of ductile braced frame system sometimes used to accommodate architectural features is the eccentrically braced frame (EBF). In order to dissipate seismic forces, EBF beam regions (called links) must sustain large inelastic deformations. EBF links with column connections must transmit large moments and shear forces to facilitate link rotation. Experiments have shown that welded link-to-column connections tend to fracture in the link flange prior to large link rotations. This study …

Development Of Mechanical Cardiovascular Assist Devices For Fontan Patients: Two Novel Approaches, Sonya Bhavsar Apr 2010

Development Of Mechanical Cardiovascular Assist Devices For Fontan Patients: Two Novel Approaches, Sonya Bhavsar

Theses and Dissertations

Few therapeutic alternatives exist for patients with a failing single ventricle physiology. To address this need, this thesis project investigated two new therapeutic alternatives, which sought to positively augment the Fontan hemodynamics. The first modality introduced a non-invasive method of external pressure application to the lower extremities. A clinical study (n=2) was conducted, and results indicated an increase in flow as a consequence to an increase in transmural pressure in the lower extremities. The second modality investigated a minimally invasive blood pump. Numerical analyses of the pump were performed to examine hydraulic performance under physiologic conditions. The pump produced pressure …

A Design Framework That Employs A Classification Scheme And Library For Compliant Mechanism Design, Brian Mark Olsen Apr 2010

A Design Framework That Employs A Classification Scheme And Library For Compliant Mechanism Design, Brian Mark Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

Limited resources are currently available to assist engineers in implementing compliant members into mechanical designs. As a result, engineers often have little to no direction incorporating compliant mechanisms. This thesis develops a conceptual design framework and process that utilizes a proposed classification scheme and a library of mechanisms to help engineers incorporate compliant mechanisms into their applications. As the knowledge related to the synthesis and analysis of compliant mechanisms continues to grow and mature, and through the classification scheme established in this thesis, compliant mechanisms may become more extensively used in commercial mechanical designs. This thesis also demonstrates a design …

Development Of Criteria For Lamina Emergent Mechanism Flexures With Specific Application To Metals, Devin Bradley Ferrell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces new revolute and torsional lamina emergent mechanism (LEM) flexure designs that are suited for use in metals. Previous LEM flexures have been designed for use in highly elastic materials, such as polymers. In extending LEM flexure designs to metals, a LEM flexure design criteria is also introduced. The LEM flexure criteria is based on relative performance between the LEM flexure and a performance datum which the LEM flexure must improve upon. This performance datum, or benchmark, is a section of lamina that is of the same overall length, width, and thickness as the LEM flexure. An analysis …

Secret Key Establishment Using Wireless Channels As Common Randomness In Time-Variant Mimo Systems, Chan Chen Apr 2010

Secret Key Establishment Using Wireless Channels As Common Randomness In Time-Variant Mimo Systems, Chan Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Encryption of confidential data with a secret key has become a widespread technique for securing wireless transmissions. However, existing key distribution methods that either deliver the secret key with a key distribution center or exchange the secret key using public-key cryptosystems are unable to establish perfect secret keys necessary for symmetric encryption techniques. This research considers secret key establishment, under the broad research area of information theoretic security, using the reciprocal wireless channel as common randomness for the extraction of perfect secret keys in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)communication systems. The presentation discusses the fundamental characteristics of the time-variant MIMO wireless channel …

Signal Processing Methods For Ultra-High Resolution Scatterometry, Brent A. Williams Apr 2010

Signal Processing Methods For Ultra-High Resolution Scatterometry, Brent A. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation approaches high resolution scatterometry from a new perspective. Three related general topics are addressed: high resolution σ^0 imaging, wind estimation from high resolution σ^0 images over the ocean, and high resolution wind estimation directly from the scatterometer measurements. Theories of each topic are developed, and previous approaches are generalized and formalized. Improved processing algorithms for these theories are developed, implemented for particular scatterometers, and analyzed. Specific results and contributions are noted below. The σ^0 imaging problem is approached as the inversion of a noisy aperture-filtered sampling operation-extending the current theory to deal explicitly with noise. A maximum aposteriori …

Composite Kernel Feature Analysis For Cancer Classification, Sindhu Myla Apr 2010

Composite Kernel Feature Analysis For Cancer Classification, Sindhu Myla

Theses and Dissertations

Computed tomographic (CT) colonography, or virtual colonoscopy, is a promising technique for screening colorectal cancers by use of CT scans of the colon. Current CT technology allows a single image set of the colon to be acquired in 10-20 seconds, which translates into an easier, more comfortable examination than is available with other screening tests. Currently, however, interpretation of an entire CT colonography examination is time-consuming, and the reader performance for polyp detection varies substantially. To overcome these difficulties while providing a high detection performance of polyps, researchers are developing computer-aided detection (CAD) schemes that automatically detect suspicious lesions in …
