The overall objective of this research was to investigate the antiproliferative and apoptogenic properties of Ni NWs …
The Influence Of Nozzle Spacing And Diameter On The Acoustic Emissions Of Closely Spaced Supersonic Jet Arrays, Ian S. Coltrin
The Influence Of Nozzle Spacing And Diameter On The Acoustic Emissions Of Closely Spaced Supersonic Jet Arrays, Ian S. Coltrin
Theses and Dissertations
The acoustic emissions from supersonic jets represent an area of significant research needs; not only in the field of aero-acoustics, but in industry as well where high pressure let down processes have been known to cause acoustically induced vibrations. A common method to reduce the acoustic emissions of such processes involves dividing the single larger supersonic flow into several smaller ones. Though this is common practice, there is not yet a current model which describes the reduction of acoustic emissions from an array of smaller supersonic jets. Current research which studies supersonic jet arrays are mainly focused on the effects …

A Design Basis For Composite Cascode Stages Operating In The Subthreshold/Weak Inversion Regions, Taylor Matt Waddel
A Design Basis For Composite Cascode Stages Operating In The Subthreshold/Weak Inversion Regions, Taylor Matt Waddel
Theses and Dissertations
Composite cascode stages have been used in operational amplifier designs to achieve ultra-high gain at very low power. The flexibility and simplicity of the stage makes it an appealing choice for low power op-amp designs. Op-amp design using the composite cascode stage is often made more difficult through the lack of a design process. A design process to aid in the selection of the MOSFET dimensions is provided in this thesis. This process includes a table-based method for selection of the widths and lengths of the MOSFETs used in the composite cascode stage. Equations are also derived for the gain, …

Hydrogen Silsesquioxane (Hsq) For Use In Nano Imprint Lithography, Nathaniel Clark
Theses and Dissertations
Innovations are being researched, using materials science, in the areas of sub- 100nm feature production. Current methods such as electron beam lithography (EBL), Extreme Ultra-Violet Lithography (EUV), and Nano-imprint lithography (NIL) are currently being studied to deliver a high throughput, low-cost process, and high field size for nano-lithography. EBL is a technique which can generate very small features (sub-10nm) but is a serial process which has undesirable time constraints. EUV is the latest generation of photo-lithography which can produce 35nm features, but has a limited area of exposure. NIL is a high resolution high throughput process, but still has time …
Using Hard Macros To Accelerate Fpga Compilation For Xilinx Fpgas, Christopher Michael Lavin
Using Hard Macros To Accelerate Fpga Compilation For Xilinx Fpgas, Christopher Michael Lavin
Theses and Dissertations
Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) offer an attractive compute platform because of their highly parallel and customizable nature in addition to the potential of being reconfigurable to any almost any desired circuit. However, compilation time (the time it takes to convert user design input into a functional implementation on the FPGA) has been a growing problem and is stifling designer productivity. This dissertation presents a new approach to FPGA compilation that more closely follows the software compilation model than that of the application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Instead of re-compiling every module in the design for each invocation of the …

Characterization And Biomechanical Analysis Of The Human Lumbar Spine With In Vitro Testing Conditions, Dean K. Stolworthy
Theses and Dissertations
Biomechanical testing of cadaveric spinal segments forms the basis for our current understanding of healthy, pathological, and surgically treated spinal function. Over the past 40 years there has been a substantial amount of data published based on a spinal biomechanical testing regimen known as the flexibility method. This data has provided valuable clinical insights that have shaped our understanding of low back pain and its treatments. Virtually all previous lumbar spinal flexibility testing has been performed at room temperature, under very low motion rates, without the presence of a compressive follower-load to simulate upper body weight and the action of …
The Effect Of Elevated Temperature On The Inelastic Deformation Behavior Of Pmr-15 Solid Polymer, Chad E. C. Ryther
The Effect Of Elevated Temperature On The Inelastic Deformation Behavior Of Pmr-15 Solid Polymer, Chad E. C. Ryther
Theses and Dissertations
The inelastic deformation behavior of PMR-15 neat resin, a high-temperature thermoset polymer, was investigated at temperatures in the 274-316°C range. The experimental program was developed to explore the influence of temperature on tensile loading, relaxation and creep behaviors of PMR-15. The results demonstrate that the mechanical behavior of PMR-15 exhibits a strong dependence on temperature. During strain-controlled tensile loading, the slope of the stress-strain curve in the quasi-elastic region decreases and the flow stress level decreases with increasing temperature. During relaxation, the amount of the stress drop decreases with increasing temperature. Based on experimental results the Viscoplasticity Based on Overstress …
Biomechanical Implications Of Lumbar Spinal Ligament Transectiona Finite Element Study, Gregory Allen Von Forell
Biomechanical Implications Of Lumbar Spinal Ligament Transectiona Finite Element Study, Gregory Allen Von Forell
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this work was to determine the possible effects of isolated spinal ligament transection on the biomechanics of the lumbar spine. A finite element model of a lumbar spine was developed and validated against experimental data. The model was tested in the primary modes of spinal motion in the intact condition, followed by comparative analysis of isolated removal of each spinal ligament. Results showed that stress increased in the remaining ligaments once a ligament was removed, potentially leading to ligament damage. Results also showed changes in bone remodeling "stimulus" which could lead to changes in bone density. Isolated …
Investigation Of Doped Zno By Molecular Beam Epitaxy For N- And P-Type Conductivity, Huiyong Liu
Investigation Of Doped Zno By Molecular Beam Epitaxy For N- And P-Type Conductivity, Huiyong Liu
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents an investigation of the properties, especially the electrical properties, of doped ZnO films grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) under different conditions. The interest in investigating ZnO films is motivated by the potential of ZnO to replace the currently dominant ITO in industries as n-type transparent electrodes and the difficulty in achieving reliable and reproducible p-type ZnO. On the one hand, n-type ZnO heavily doped with Al or Ga (AZO or GZO) is the most promising to replace ITO due to the low cost, abundant material resources, non-toxicity , high conductivity, and high transparency. On the …
A Multiagent Energy Management Control System For Commercial & Industrial Applications, Tyler Wayne Price
A Multiagent Energy Management Control System For Commercial & Industrial Applications, Tyler Wayne Price
Theses and Dissertations
Commercial and industrial customers have increasingly adopted fully-automated demand response (auto-DR) as part of their energy management control strategy to mitigate the effects of rising electricity costs. Some of these customers have also contracted with their power provider to permit voluntary curtailment of power consumption to be negotiated by a human operator. Even still, at the customer-side there are needs to maximize cost savings and automate decision making, and at the provider-side there are needs to reduce peaking demand and demand volatility. This thesis describes a centralized multiagent approach that automatically negotiates demand curtailment with a power provider while making …
Regeneration Of Electrospun Bioresorbable Vascular Grafts: A Phenomenon Associated With Vascular Graft Properties And Macrophage Phenotypes (M1/M2), Koyal Garg
Theses and Dissertations
Macrophages (MФ) and mast cells are important cell types in the context of tissue remodeling and regeneration. Mast cells participate in the early stages of wound healing and modulate the acute inflammatory responses to biomaterials. Mast cells can secrete a myriad of different cytokines by the process of degranulation; the process of regulated secretion in which preformed contents stored in their granules are rapidly released by exocytosis. Some of these cytokines such as IL-4, IL-13 and TNF-α can modulate the MФ phenotype. Macrophages (MΦ) are innate immune cells, crucial for tissue homeostasis, presentation of foreign and self-antigens following infection/injury, pathogen …
Novel Fluorous Hybrid Surface Modification Characterized By Wetting Dynamics, Morphology And Nanomechanics, Sithara Nair
Novel Fluorous Hybrid Surface Modification Characterized By Wetting Dynamics, Morphology And Nanomechanics, Sithara Nair
Theses and Dissertations
The surface response of a polymer substrate to external stimuli such as initial wetting is controlled by the outermost molecular layer. Thus, changes on the nanoscale may be engaged to control macroscale wetting behavior. Our work has predominantly focused on surface modification of conventional polyurethane coatings (HMDI-BD-PTMO). Studies on network constrained phase separation and facile polydimethylsiloxane surface functionalization led to the discovery of a simpler one-step and more general approach to functional polymer surfaces that we have designated as “Bottle-Brush Nanoglass” (BB-NG) after the two principle components: (a) a polyoxetane soft block “spine” with side chain “A” bristles and triethoxysilyl …
Effects Of Strain On Dielectric Properties Of Ferroelectric Ba0.5sr0.5tio3 Films, Hongrui Liu
Effects Of Strain On Dielectric Properties Of Ferroelectric Ba0.5sr0.5tio3 Films, Hongrui Liu
Theses and Dissertations
Owing to the large electric-field-dependent permittivity, ferroelectric thin films have attracted a great deal of attention on applications in miniature tunable microwave components with high performance and cost reduction, such as phase shifters, tunable oscillators, delay lines, and antennas. These tunable devices require large change in the dielectric constant with applied field and a low loss at microwave frequencies. As one of the promising ferroelectric materials, barium strontium titanate thin film, especially Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) films, have raises great research interests due to its high dielectric constant, which is tunable in an external electric field, combined with relative low loss at …

Exploitation Of Unintentional Information Leakage From Integrated Circuits, William E. Cobb
Theses and Dissertations
Unintentional electromagnetic emissions are used to recognize or verify the identity of a unique integrated circuit (IC) based on fabrication process-induced variations in a manner analogous to biometric human identification. The effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated through an extensive empirical study, with results presented indicating correct device identification success rates of greater than 99:5%, and average verification equal error rates (EERs) of less than 0:05% for 40 near-identical devices. The proposed approach is suitable for security applications involving commodity commercial ICs, with substantial cost and scalability advantages over existing approaches. A systematic leakage mapping methodology is also proposed to …

Investigation Of Gallium Nitride Transistor Reliability Through Accelerated Life Testing And Modeling, Bradley D. Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
Gallium nitride high electron mobility transistors are attractive to the DoD for their ability to operate at high frequencies, voltages, temperatures, and power. Yet, there are concerns about the reliability of these devices. Various degradation mechanisms and their causes are proposed in the literature. A variety of reliability tests were conducted to understand these mechanisms and causes. A multi-stressor experiment revealed different failure mechanisms than are in the literature. In particular, the devices tested at high voltage in the OFF state did not degrade significantly as suggested by others' reports. The validity of temperature-accelerated life testing when applied to GaN …
A Method For Measuring Programmatic Dependency And Interdependency Between Dod Acquisition Programs, Matthew B. Christensen
A Method For Measuring Programmatic Dependency And Interdependency Between Dod Acquisition Programs, Matthew B. Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
There is currently no accepted method for quantitative measurement of acquisition program interdependency. While some methods exist for measuring dependency or interdependency at the component or system level, these methods do not translate well to program interdependency measurement. The objective of this thesis is to provide a model for measuring acquisition program interdependency accurately and quantitatively. The model presented in this thesis uses four Interdependency Factors to identify dependency relationships between programs. Specific Interdependency Levels are then used to measure the strengths of those dependencies. The model also accounts for measurement of dependencies upon programs that are not directly connected, …

Linear-Quadratic Control Of A Mems Micromirror Using Kalman Filtering, Jamie P. Schnapp
Linear-Quadratic Control Of A Mems Micromirror Using Kalman Filtering, Jamie P. Schnapp
Theses and Dissertations
The deflection limitations of electrostatic flexure-beam actuators are well known. Specifically, as the beam is actuated and the gap traversed, the restoring force necessary for equilibrium increases proportionally with the displacement to first order, while the electrostatic actuating force increases with the inverse square of the gap. Equilibrium, and thus stable open-loop voltage control, ceases at one-third the total gap distance, leading to actuator snap-in. A Kalman Filter is designed with an appropriately complex state dynamics model to accurately estimate actuator deflection given voltage input and capacitance measurements, which are then used by a Linear Quadratic controller to generate a …

The purpose of this research was to determine how effectively a global team- and project-based computer aided engineering course provided learning opportunities that enabled students to develop elements of global competence in comparison to …
The Use Of Various Failure Criteria As Applied To High Speed Wear, David A. Huber
The Use Of Various Failure Criteria As Applied To High Speed Wear, David A. Huber
Theses and Dissertations
This research has been aimed at developing methods to predict mechanical wear of sliding bodies at high velocities. Specifically, wear of test sled slippers at the Holloman High Speed Test Track at Holloman AFB, NM, is being considered. Developing a numerical model to represent the velocity range achieved at the test track is infeasible, so numerical modeling techniques must be adopted. Previous research has made use of finite element codes to simulate the high velocity sliding event. However, the extreme velocities at the test track can create numerical errors in the finite element codes. To avoid the numerical errors, an …

Scramjet Isolator Modeling And Control, John R. Hutzel
Theses and Dissertations
The scramjet isolator is a duct in which pressure increases from the inlet to the combustor via a shock train. The shock train leading edge (LE) location must be controlled in an operational scramjet. A LE location measurement algorithm, dynamic model, and control algorithm were developed and validated with 500 frame per second (FPS) shadowgraph images in this research. The test apparatus consisted of a direct connect cold-flow high-speed wind tunnel with an adjustable ramp mounted in the tunnel floor. Ramp adjustments changed the tunnel cross-sectional area which changed the tunnel back pressure and LE location. Wall-mounted pressure transducers and …

Chemical Templating By Afm Tip-Directed Nano-Electrochemical Patterning, Kyle A. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
This work has examines the creation and use of chemical templates for nanocircuit and other nanodevice fabrication. Chemical templating can be useful in attachment, orientation and wiring of molecularly templated circuits. DNA origami provides a suitable method for creating molecularly templated circuits as DNA can be folded into complex shapes and functionalized with active circuit elements, such as semiconducting nanomaterials. Surface attachment of DNA origami structures can be accomplished by hybridization of dangling single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) on the origami structures with complementary surface-bound strands. Chemical templating provides a pathway for placing the patterned surface-bound attachment points needed for surface alignment …
