Scaling Study Of Wave Rotor Turbo-Normalization Of A Small Internal Combustion Engine, Brandon D. Smith Sep 2012

Scaling Study Of Wave Rotor Turbo-Normalization Of A Small Internal Combustion Engine, Brandon D. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

One issue facing small Remotely Piloted Aircraft engines is their ability to maintain performance at altitude. Since many of these aircraft use commercial off the shelf engines originally designed for radio controlled aircraft and lawn care implements, the reduced pressure environment significantly degrades the operability of the engine as the altitude increases. An option to overcome this difficulty is to supercharge the system; however most superchargers are designed for larger, typically automotive, engines. As a supercharger's size is decreased, there are large efficiency losses. Therefore, there is a need to accomplish this function on a smaller scale without. One option …

Resolution Study Of A Hyperspectral Sensor Using Computed Tomography In The Process Of Noise, Samuel V. Mantravadi Sep 2012

Resolution Study Of A Hyperspectral Sensor Using Computed Tomography In The Process Of Noise, Samuel V. Mantravadi

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, a new type of hyperspectral imaging sensor has been proposed which simultaneously records both spectral data and multiple spatial dimensions. Unlike dispersive imaging spectrometers, chromo-tomographic hyperspectral imaging sensors (CTHIS) record two spatial dimensions as well as a spectral dimension using computed tomography (CT) techniques with only a finite number of spatially-spectrally diverse images. To date, the factors affecting resolution of these sensors have not been examined. This research examines factors affecting resolution, specifically the number of the focus planes needed to resolve a particular object calculated from a theoretical lower bound, determine a method of reconstructing a hyperspectral object …

Effective Measurement Of Reliability Of Repairable Usaf Systems, Louis J. Hogge Sep 2012

Effective Measurement Of Reliability Of Repairable Usaf Systems, Louis J. Hogge

Theses and Dissertations

The USAF generally does not know the reliability of its fielded repairable systems. The reported metric, Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), is too lagging to be actionable in the best case, and is not representative of actual system reliability in the worst case. This thesis investigates the statistical techniques for measurement and analysis of the reliability of fielded repairable systems, which are very different than nonrepairables. To frame the investigation, a comparison is made between the generally accepted definitions and metrics and those used across the US Air Force (USAF). Reliability can be analyzed in four context areas: reliability prediction …

Operationally Responsive Spacecraft Using Electric Propulsion, Thomas C. Co Sep 2012

Operationally Responsive Spacecraft Using Electric Propulsion, Thomas C. Co

Theses and Dissertations

A desirable space asset is responsive and flexible to mission requirements, low-cost, and easy to acquire. Highly-efficient electric thrusters have been considered a viable technology to provide these characteristics; however, it has been plagued by limitations and challenges such that operational implementation has been severely limited. The technology is constantly improving, but even with current electric propulsion, a spacecraft is capable of maneuvering consistently and repeatedly in low-Earth orbit to provide a responsive and flexible system. This research develops the necessary algorithm and tools to demonstrate that EP systems can maneuver significantly in a timely fashion to overfly any target …

Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti Sep 2012

Novel Discretization Schemes For The Numerical Simulation Of Membrane Dynamics, Kyle F. Kolsti

Theses and Dissertations

Motivated by the demands of simulating flapping wings of Micro Air Vehicles, novel numerical methods were developed and evaluated for the dynamic simulation of membranes. For linear membranes, a mixed-form time-continuous Galerkin method was employed using trilinear space-time elements, and the entire space-time domain was discretized and solved simultaneously. For geometrically nonlinear membranes, the model incorporated two new schemes that were independently developed and evaluated. Time marching was performed using quintic Hermite polynomials uniquely determined by end-point jerk constraints. The single-step, implicit scheme was significantly more accurate than the most common Newmark schemes. For a simple harmonic oscillator, the scheme …

Theses and Dissertations

The Manduca Sexta species of moth serves as a source of biological inspiration for the future of micro air vehicle flapping flight. The ability of this species to hover in flapping flight has warranted investigation into the critical material, structural, and geometric properties of the forewing of this biological specimen. A rigorous morphological study of the Manduca Sexta forewing was conducted to characterize the physical and material properties of the biological forewing for the purpose of developing an advanced parametric three dimensional model finite element analysis (FEA) model. This FEA model was tuned to match the experimentally determined structural dynamics …

Intelligent Behavioral Action Aiding For Improved Autonomous Image Navigation, Kwee Guan Eng Sep 2012

Intelligent Behavioral Action Aiding For Improved Autonomous Image Navigation, Kwee Guan Eng

Theses and Dissertations

In egomotion image navigation, errors are common especially when traversing areas with few landmarks. Since image navigation is often used as a passive navigation technique in Global Positioning System (GPS) denied environments; egomotion accuracy is important for precise navigation in these challenging environments. One of the causes of egomotion errors is inaccurate landmark distance measurements, e.g., sensor noise. This research determines a landmark location egomotion error model that quantifies the effects of landmark locations on egomotion value uncertainty and errors. The error model accounts for increases in landmark uncertainty due to landmark distance and image centrality. A robot then uses …

Effects Of Architecture On Information Leakage Of A Hardware Advanced Encryption Standard Implementation, Eric A. Koziel Sep 2012

Effects Of Architecture On Information Leakage Of A Hardware Advanced Encryption Standard Implementation, Eric A. Koziel

Theses and Dissertations

Side-channel analysis (SCA) is a threat to many modern cryptosystems. Many countermeasures exist, but are costly to implement and still do not provide complete protection against SCA. A plausible alternative is to design the cryptosystem using architectures that are known to leak little information about the cryptosystem's operations. This research uses several common primitive architectures for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and assesses the susceptibility of the full AES system to side-channel attack for various primitive configurations. A combined encryption/decryption core is also evaluated to determine if variation of high-level architectures affects leakage characteristics. These different configurations are evaluated under …

Ground Vehicle Navigation Using Magnetic Field Variation, Jeremiah A. Shockley Sep 2012

Ground Vehicle Navigation Using Magnetic Field Variation, Jeremiah A. Shockley

Theses and Dissertations

The Earth's magnetic field has been the bedrock of navigation for centuries. The latest research highlights the uniqueness of magnetic field measurements based on position due to large scale variations as well as localized perturbations. These observable changes in the Earth's magnetic field as a function of position provide distinct information which can be used for navigation. This dissertation describes ground vehicle navigation exploiting variation in Earth's magnetic field using a self-contained navigation system consisting of only a magnetometer and magnetic field maps. In order to achieve navigation, effective calibration enables repeatable magnetic field measurements from different vehicles and facilitates …

The Multiobjective Average Network Flow Problem: Formulations, Algorithms, Heuristics, And Complexity, Jeremy D. Jordan Sep 2012

The Multiobjective Average Network Flow Problem: Formulations, Algorithms, Heuristics, And Complexity, Jeremy D. Jordan

Theses and Dissertations

Integrating value focused thinking with the shortest path problem results in a unique formulation called the multiobjective average shortest path problem. We prove this is NP-complete for general graphs. For directed acyclic graphs, an efficient algorithm and even faster heuristic are proposed. While the worst case error of the heuristic is proven unbounded, its average performance on random graphs is within 3% of the optimal solution. Additionally, a special case of the more general biobjective average shortest path problem is given, allowing tradeoffs between decreases in arc set cardinality and increases in multiobjective value; the algorithm to solve the average …

Diagrams and visuals often cannot adequately capture a complex system’s architecture for analysis. The Department of Defense Architectural Framework (DoDAF), written to follow the Unified Modeling Language (UML), is a collection of mandated common architectural products for interoperability among the DoD components. In this study, DoDAF products from as-is Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) Satellite Communication (SATCOM) systems have been utilized for the creation of executable architectures as part of an Executable Model Based Systems Engineering (EMBSE) process. EMBSE was achieved using Simulink, a software tool for modeling, simulating and analyzing dynamic systems.

This study has demonstrated that DoDAF products can …

Towards The Mitigation Of Correlation Effects In The Analysis Of Hyperspectral Imagery With Extension To Robust Parameter Design, Jason P. Williams Sep 2012

Towards The Mitigation Of Correlation Effects In The Analysis Of Hyperspectral Imagery With Extension To Robust Parameter Design, Jason P. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Standard anomaly detectors and classifiers assume data to be uncorrelated and homogeneous, which is not inherent in Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI). To address the detection difficulty, a new method termed Iterative Linear RX (ILRX) uses a line of pixels which shows an advantage over RX, in that it mitigates some of the effects of correlation due to spatial proximity; while the iterative adaptation from Iterative Linear RX (IRX) simultaneously eliminates outliers. In this research, the application of classification algorithms using anomaly detectors to remove potential anomalies from mean vector and covariance matrix estimates and addressing non-homogeneity through cluster analysis, both of …

Platinum Nanocatalytic Combustion Of Methanol-Air Mixture, James Applegate Sep 2012

Platinum Nanocatalytic Combustion Of Methanol-Air Mixture, James Applegate

Theses and Dissertations

Catalytic combustion's ability to release the potential energy of high energy density fuels could transform the portable electronic device market by removing the reliance on batteries. Catalytic combustion is a generally well understood combustion technique, but the effects of specific experimental conditions (catalyst loading, flow rates and substrates) on catalyst performance are not as well known. Systhesized catalytic Pt nonoparticles (dp ~ 11.6 nm) were dispersed on a cordierite substrate and were characterized using TEM, XRD and SEM. Experimental results were obtained in a miniature-scale continuous flow reactor. Subsequent studies report the effect catalyst loading and reactor flow parameters have …

Cfd Transient Simulation Of An Isolator Shock Train In A Scramjet Engine, Troy C. Hoeger Sep 2012

Cfd Transient Simulation Of An Isolator Shock Train In A Scramjet Engine, Troy C. Hoeger

Theses and Dissertations

For hypersonic flight, the scramjet engine uses an isolator to contain the pre-combustion shock train formed by the pressure difference between the inlet and the combustion chamber. If this shock train were to reach the inlet, it would cause an engine unstart, disrupting the flow through the engine and leading to a loss of thrust and potential loss of the vehicle. Prior to this work, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of the isolator was needed for simulating and characterizing the isolator flow and for finding the relationship between back pressure and changes in the location of the leading edge …

Hemorrhage Detection And Analysis In Traumatic Pelvic Injuries, Pavani Davuluri Aug 2012

Hemorrhage Detection And Analysis In Traumatic Pelvic Injuries, Pavani Davuluri

Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic pelvic injuries associated with high-energy pelvic fractures are life-threatening injuries. Extensive bleeding is relatively common with pelvic fractures. However, bleeding is especially prevalent with high-energy fractures. Hemorrhage remains the major cause of death that occur within the first 24 hours after a traumatic pelvic injury. Emergent-life saving treatment is required for high-energy pelvic fractures associated with hemorrhage. A thorough understanding of potential sources of bleeding within a short period is essential for diagnosis and treatment planning. Computed Tomography (CT) images have been widely in use in identifying the potential sources of bleeding. A pelvic CT scan contains a large …

The In-Transit Vigilant Covering Tour Problem Of Routing Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Huang Teng Tan Aug 2012

The In-Transit Vigilant Covering Tour Problem Of Routing Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Huang Teng Tan

Theses and Dissertations

The routing of unmanned ground vehicles for the surveillance and protection of key installations is modeled as a new variant of the Covering Tour Problem (CTP). The CTP structure provides both the routing and target sensing components of the installation protection problem. Our variant is called the in-transit Vigilant Covering Tour Problem (VCTP) and considers not only the vertex cover but also the additional edge coverage capability of the unmanned ground vehicle while sensing in-transit between vertices. The VCTP is formulated as a Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) with a dual set covering structure involving vertices and edges. An empirical study …

Rough-Cut Capacity Planning In Multimodal Freight Transportation Networks, Robert B. Hartlage Aug 2012

Rough-Cut Capacity Planning In Multimodal Freight Transportation Networks, Robert B. Hartlage

Theses and Dissertations

A main challenge in transporting cargo for United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) is in mode selection or integration. Demand for cargo is time sensitive and must be fulfilled by an established due date. Since these due dates are often inflexible, commercial carriers are used at an enormous expense, in order to fill the gap in organic transportation asset capacity. This dissertation develops a new methodology for transportation capacity assignment to routes based on the Resource Constrained Shortest Path Problem (RCSP). Routes can be single or multimodal depending on the characteristics of the network, delivery timeline, modal capacities, and costs. The …

The process was efficient due to the Leo CFD code's ability to estimate cooling mass flux at surface grid cells using a transpiration boundary condition, …

Effects Of Front-Loading And Stagger Angle On Endwall Losses Of High Lift Low Pressure Turbine Vanes, M. Eric Lyall Aug 2012

Effects Of Front-Loading And Stagger Angle On Endwall Losses Of High Lift Low Pressure Turbine Vanes, M. Eric Lyall

Theses and Dissertations

Past efforts to reduce the airfoil count in low pressure turbines have produced high lift profiles with unacceptably high endwall loss. The purpose of the current work is to suggest alternative approaches for reducing endwall losses. The effects of the fluid mechanics and high lift profile geometry are considered. Mixing effects of the mean flow and turbulence fields are decoupled to show that mean flow shear in the endwall wake is negligible compared to turbulent shear, indicating that turbulence dissipation is the primary cause of total pressure loss. The mean endwall flow field does influence total pressure loss by causing …

Magneto-Elastic Behavior In Hard- And Soft-Mre's Including Demagnetizing Effects, Juan Roche Aug 2012

Magneto-Elastic Behavior In Hard- And Soft-Mre's Including Demagnetizing Effects, Juan Roche

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies the magnetic and mechanical behavior of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) based on four possible permutations defined along particle alignment (Aligned and Unaligned) and magnetization (Hard- or Soft-magnetic) pairs. These pairs designations yield classes A-H, U-H, A-S and U-S. The last two classes comprise traditional MREs. Samples were fabricated by mixing DOW HS II silicone elastomer compound and 30% by volume of either nominally 40-micron M-type barium hexaferrite (BaM) or 325-mesh iron (Fe) particles cured with or without the presence of a magnetic field. Magnetization and density measurements were employed to help confirm fabrication of the four distinct classes. …

Theses and Dissertations

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is quickly becoming a method of interest for welding of high strength steel (HSS) and ultra high strength steel (UHSS). FSSW has been shown to produce high quality welds in these materials, without the drawbacks associated with fusion welding. Tool grade for polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tools has a significant impact on wear resistance, weld quality, and tool failure in FSSW of DP 980 steel sheet. More specifically, for a nominal composition of 90% CBN, the grain size has a significant impact on the wear resistance of the tool. A-type tools performed the best, …

Laboratory Experiments On Colliding Nonresonant Internal Wave Beams, Sean Paul Smith Aug 2012

Laboratory Experiments On Colliding Nonresonant Internal Wave Beams, Sean Paul Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Internal waves are prominent fluid phenomena in both the atmosphere and ocean. Because internal waves have the ability to transfer a large amount of energy, they contribute to the global distribution of energy. This causes internal waves to influence global climate patterns and critical ocean mixing. Therefore, studying internal waves provides additional insight in how to model geophysical phenomena that directly impact our lives. There is a myriad of fluid phenomena with which internal waves can interact, including other internal waves. Equipment and processes are developed to perform laboratory experiments analyzing the interaction of two colliding nonresonant internal waves. Nonresonant …

Theses and Dissertations

A unique and novel method to study thromboembolism by direct observation was developed. High-definition videos of thrombus formation and embolization were successfully obtained in miniature flow cells using in-vitro, non-invasive, real-time techniques. Critical parameters of thromboembolism such as thrombus growth rate, thrombus growth direction, shear force on the thrombus at embolization, and adhesion strength of the thrombus to the foreign surface were determined. Thrombus growth was found predominantly in two locations: 1) in the flow recirculation zone just after the trailing edge of the small tubes (53%) and 2) at the leading edge of the small tubes (47%). In the …

Novel Iron Catalyst And Fixed-Bed Reactor Model For The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, Kyle Martin Brunner Aug 2012

Novel Iron Catalyst And Fixed-Bed Reactor Model For The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, Kyle Martin Brunner

Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates a novel iron Fischer-Tropsch (FT) catalyst preparation and describes the development of a trickle fixed-bed recycle reactor model (TFBRRM) for the FT synthesis applicable to both iron and cobalt catalysts. The iron catalyst preparation was developed using a novel solvent deficient precipitation reaction. Fifteen Fe/Cu/K/SiO2 catalysts were prepared to investigate key preparation variables including timing of promoter addition, washing or not washing after precipitation, and drying temperature. Adding promoters to starting materials before precipitation (1S) gives more uniform promoter distributions which gives higher water-gas shift activity and lower methane selectivity. Unwashed catalysts have smaller average pore and …
