Non-Linear Optimization Applied To Angle-Of-Arrival Satellite-Based Geolocation, Stephen D. Hartzell
Non-Linear Optimization Applied To Angle-Of-Arrival Satellite-Based Geolocation, Stephen D. Hartzell
Theses and Dissertations
Geolocation is a common application for satellite systems. This involves estimating an object's location (herein called the subject) based on noisy satellite data. Many geolocation methods exist; however, none are tailored specifically for the unique problems faced by satellite systems. Some satellites are so far from the subject being localized that by the time the satellite receives a signal from the subject it might have moved appreciably. Furthermore, some satellites or terrestrial sensors may be much closer to the subject than others. Therefore, sensors may need to be weighted based upon their distance to the subject being localized. In addition, …
Scalable System Design For Covert Mimo Communications, Jason R. Pennington
Scalable System Design For Covert Mimo Communications, Jason R. Pennington
Theses and Dissertations
In modern communication systems, bandwidth is a limited commodity. Bandwidth efficient systems are needed to meet the demands of the ever-increasing amount of data that users share. Of particular interest is the U.S. Military, where high-resolution pictures and video are used and shared. In these environments, covert communications are necessary while still providing high data rates. The promise of multi-antenna systems providing higher data rates has been shown on a small scale, but limitations in hardware prevent large systems from being implemented.
Proton Damage Effects On Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Evan R. Kemp
Proton Damage Effects On Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors, Evan R. Kemp
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the effects of proton damage on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) transistors. The transistors were irradiated by 1.8 MeV protons to determine the damage induced in the SWCNTs and the device substrate using Raman spectroscopy, and to observe the effect on transistor functionality by measuring current-voltage characteristics. Irradiation of the SWCNT transistors to a fluence of 1x1013 protons/cm2 resulted in 67% increase in the Raman D/G peak intensity ratio, while at a fluence of 2x1013 protons/cm2 the increase in the D/G ratio was only 18%, likely due to radiation annealing. Current-voltage measurements indicated an …
Air Force Inspection System: An Application For System-Of-Systems (Sos) Engineering, Joseph R. Lay
Air Force Inspection System: An Application For System-Of-Systems (Sos) Engineering, Joseph R. Lay
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Combat Command (ACC) Inspector General (IG) assesses the operational readiness and combat effectiveness of units by evaluating individual wings. Today's conflicts; however, are waged as a joint force. The Joint Forces Commander (JFC) leverages the resources of the entire military complex to achieve strategic objectives. The synergistic effects, created by the integration of individual weapon systems, produce greater results than the individual components. Evaluating wings outside the joint System of Systems (SoS) architecture does not provide a true assessment of combat readiness. Using a case study method, this research examines the idea of integrating a joint SoS architecture …
The Prospect Of Responsive Spacecraft Using Aeroassisted, Trans-Atmospheric Maneuvers, Robert A. Bettinger
The Prospect Of Responsive Spacecraft Using Aeroassisted, Trans-Atmospheric Maneuvers, Robert A. Bettinger
Theses and Dissertations
Comprised of exo- and trans-atmospheric trajectory segments, atmospheric re-entry represents a complex dynamical event which traditionally signals the mission end-of-life for low-Earth orbit spacecraft. Transcending this paradigm, atmospheric re-entry can be employed as a means of operational maneuver whereby aerodynamic forces can be exploited to create an aeroassisted maneuver. Utilizing a notional trans-atmospheric, lifting re-entry vehicle with L/D =6, the first phase of research demonstrates the terrestrial reachability potential for skip entry aeroassisted maneuvers. By overflying a geographically diverse set of ground targets, comparative analysis indicates a significant savings in delta V expenditure for skip entry compared with exo-atmospheric maneuvers. …
Minimization Of The Effects Of Secondary Reactions On Turbine Film Cooling In A Fuel Rich Environment, Andrew T. Shewhart
Minimization Of The Effects Of Secondary Reactions On Turbine Film Cooling In A Fuel Rich Environment, Andrew T. Shewhart
Theses and Dissertations
The demand for increased thrust, higher engine efficiency, and reduced fuel consumption has increased the turbine inlet temperature and pressure in modern gas turbine engines. The outcome of these higher temperatures and pressures is the potential for unconsumed radical species to enter the turbine. Because modern cooling schemes for turbine blades involve injecting cool, oxygen rich air adjacent to the surface, the potential for reaction with radicals in the mainstream flow and augmented heat transfer to the blade arises. This study evaluated various configurations of multiple cylindrical rows of cooling holes in terms of both heat release and effective downstream …
The Differential Vector Phase-Locked Loop For Global Navigation Satellite System Signal Tracking, James J. Brewer
The Differential Vector Phase-Locked Loop For Global Navigation Satellite System Signal Tracking, James J. Brewer
Theses and Dissertations
A novel differential vector phase-locked loop (DVPLL) is derived that takes GNSS code-phase and carrier-phase measurements from a base station and uses them to maintain an integer ambiguity resolved quality solution directly in the vector tracking loop of a rover receiver. The only state variables estimated and used to create the replica code and carrier signals from the base station measurements are three position and two clock states for a static test. Closing the individual loops solely through the navigation filter makes this a pure vector method. For short baselines, where differential atmospheric errors are small, the DVPLL can be …

Effect Of Video Camera-Based Remote Roadway Condition Monitoring On Snow Removal-Related Maintenance Operations, Seishi Yamagata
Theses and Dissertations
Remote monitoring through the use of cameras is widely utilized for traffic operation, but has not been utilized widely for roadway maintenance operations. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has implemented a new remote monitoring system, referred to as a Cloud-enabled Remote Video Streaming (CRVS) camera system for snow removal-related maintenance operations in the winter. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the CRVS camera system in snow removal-related maintenance operations. This study was conducted in two parts: opinion surveys of maintenance station supervisors and an analysis on snow removal-related maintenance costs. The …
Target Motion Estimation Techniques For Single-Channel Sar, Mark T. Crockett
Target Motion Estimation Techniques For Single-Channel Sar, Mark T. Crockett
Theses and Dissertations
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are versatile, high-resolution radar imagers useful for providing detailed intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, especially when atmospheric conditions are non-ideal for optical imagers. However, moving targets in SAR images are smeared. Along-track interferometry is a commonly-used method for extracting the motion parameters of moving targets but requires a dual-aperture SAR system, which may be power- size- or cost-prohibitive. This thesis presents a method of estimating target motion parameters in single-channel SAR data given geometric target motion constraints. I test this method on both simulated and actual SAR data. This estimation method includes an initial estimate, computation …
Evaluation Of Passive Force Behavior For Bridge Abutments Using Large-Scale Tests With Various Backfill Geometries, Jaycee Cornwall Smith
Evaluation Of Passive Force Behavior For Bridge Abutments Using Large-Scale Tests With Various Backfill Geometries, Jaycee Cornwall Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Bridge abutments are designed to withstand lateral pressures from thermal expansion and seismic forces. Current design curves have been seen to dangerously over- and under-estimate the peak passive resistance and corresponding deflection of abutment backfills. Similar studies on passive pressure have shown that passive resistance changes with different types of constructed backfills. The effects of changing the length to width ratio, or including MSE wingwalls determine passive force-deflection relationships. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of the wall heights and of the MSE support on passive pressure and backfill failure, and to compare the field results …
Characterization And Optimization Of Thermal Protective Fabrics Designed To Protect Against Splash Hazards, Jeremy Osguthorpe
Characterization And Optimization Of Thermal Protective Fabrics Designed To Protect Against Splash Hazards, Jeremy Osguthorpe
Theses and Dissertations
Thermal textiles used in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are used to protect individuals from the hazards of thermal energy. An analytical model of the diffusion of thermal energy within the fabric was developed to simulate the transfer of thermal energy due to a hot liquid splash. Based on the model results, it was determined that that the use of an orthotropic material in which the thermal conductivities in the radial and axial directions are different can be used to decrease the amount of heat transferred through the fabric and thereby increase amount of protection in PPE. An orthotropic material particularly …

Friction Bit Joining Of Dissimilar Combinations Of Advanced High-Strength Steel And Aluminum Alloys, Lile P. Squires
Theses and Dissertations
Friction bit joining (FBJ) is a new method that enables lightweight metal to be joined to advanced high-strength steels. Weight reduction through the use of advanced high-strength materials is necessary in the automotive industry, as well as other markets, where weight savings are increasingly emphasized in pursuit of fuel efficiency. The purpose of this research is twofold: (1) to understand the influence that process parameters such as bit design, material type and machine commands have on the consistency and strength of friction bit joints in dissimilar metal alloys; and (2) to pioneer machine and bit configurations that would aid commercial, …
Correlation Between Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (Mscr) Results And Polymer Modification Of Binder, Eric Dubois
Correlation Between Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (Mscr) Results And Polymer Modification Of Binder, Eric Dubois
Theses and Dissertations
Nationwide traffic loads are increasing, pushing conventional asphalt to its limit, while in New Jersey matters are made worse by the heavy use of the Northeast Corridor. Polymer modification of asphalt, which can improve both low and high temperature performance, is already available; however, but in many cases traditional Superpave testing is not sensitive enough to quantify the impact of modification, dimensioning its use. Superpave Performance Grade Plus tests, are sensitive to polymer modification but are time intensive and costly, leading the New Jersey Department of Transportation to require styrene-butadiene or styrene-butadiene-styrene to be incorporated in all modified binder to …

Microstructural Factors Of Strain Delocalization In Model Metallic Glass Matrix Composites, Thomas James Hardin
Microstructural Factors Of Strain Delocalization In Model Metallic Glass Matrix Composites, Thomas James Hardin
Theses and Dissertations
Metallic glass matrix composites have enormous potential stemming from the interplay between crystalline and amorphous phases. This work models such a composite using shear transformation zone dynamics (a modified kinetic Monte Carlo method) for the amorphous phase, and a local Taylor dislocation model for the crystalline phase. An N-factorial experiment using the model is presented examining the effects of crystalline volume fraction, microstructure length scale, and yield stress of the crystalline phase. Each replicate is analyzed for maximum stress, maximum strain, strain energy dissipation, strain localization, and strain partitioning between phases. Regression analysis is used to identify statistically-significant trends in …
Toward Automating Web Protocol Configuration For A Programmable Logic Controller Emulator, Deanna R. Fink
Toward Automating Web Protocol Configuration For A Programmable Logic Controller Emulator, Deanna R. Fink
Theses and Dissertations
Industrial Control Systems (ICS) remain vulnerable through attack vectors that exist within programmable logic controllers (PLC). PLC emulators used as honeypots can provide insight into these vulnerabilities. Honeypots can sometimes deter attackers from real devices and log activity. A variety of PLC emulators exist, but require manual figuration to change their PLC pro le. This limits their flexibility for deployment. An automated process for configuring PLC emulators can open the door for emulation of many types of PLCs. This study investigates the feasibility of creating such a process. The research creates an automated process for figuring the web protocols of …
Analysis Of Long-Term Utah Temperature Trends Using Hilbert-Haung Transforms, Brent H. Hargis
Analysis Of Long-Term Utah Temperature Trends Using Hilbert-Haung Transforms, Brent H. Hargis
Theses and Dissertations
We analyzed long-term temperature trends in Utah using a relatively new signal processing method called Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). We evaluated the available weather records in Utah and selected 52 stations, which had records longer than 60 years, for analysis. We analyzed daily temperature data, both minimum and maximums, using the EMD method that decomposes non-stationary data (data with a trend) into periodic components and the underlying trend. Most decomposition algorithms require stationary data (no trend) with constant periods and temperature data do not meet these constraints. In addition to identifying the long-term trend, we also identified other periodic processes …

Aerodynamic Improvements For Auto-Carrying Railcars, Robert Arthur Condie
Aerodynamic Improvements For Auto-Carrying Railcars, Robert Arthur Condie
Theses and Dissertations
The railroad industry is responsible for the mass transport of a vast numbers of goods throughout the United States. As needs and capabilities of the railroad industry have changed, the interest in reducing the resistance of locomotives and railcars has increased. This has become paramount as fuel prices have increased in recent years. Resistant forces can result from friction in mechanical components and aerodynamic drag of the moving train. As the average traveling speeds of trains have increased, aerodynamics are contributing a larger fraction of the overall resistance. For this reason, the aerodynamic profiles of trains have become a topic …
Microstructure Design And Experimental Characterization Of Functional Elastic Metamaterials, Rui Zhu
Microstructure Design And Experimental Characterization Of Functional Elastic Metamaterials, Rui Zhu
Theses and Dissertations
Elastic metamaterials are of growing interest due to their dramatically increased manipulation ability as well as their novel engineering applications. The purpose of this research is to develop and model elastic metamaterials with unusual effective properties and their applications in low frequency elastic wave attenuation and vibration suppression. The working principle of the elastic metamaterials is to use man-made microstructures, local resonators, on a scale much less than its working wavelength. Therefore it is possible to describe their response by using dispersive homogenized effective media. First, we developed a retrieval method to obtain effective material properties of the metamaterial and …

Design Of A Light-Weight Low-Volume High Oxygen Storage Density Material, Nicholas Robert Schwartz
Design Of A Light-Weight Low-Volume High Oxygen Storage Density Material, Nicholas Robert Schwartz
Theses and Dissertations
A compact, lightweight, dense and safe method for storing and supplying oxygen remains a large hurdle for closed-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and respiratory protective equipment. No filter that can protect against airborne chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) contaminants exists, which presents the need for an isolated oxygen source. Heavy and high maintenance oxygen cylinders are typically used. The most important criteria for a smart and effective CBRN protection device are safety, weight, size, and cost, level of maintenance, ease-of-use and reliability. This study focused on nanomaterials for high capacity gas storage. Nanocapillary arrays composed of anodic aluminum oxide …
