Influence Of Pile Shape On Resistance To Lateral Loading, Guillermo Bustamante Dec 2014

Influence Of Pile Shape On Resistance To Lateral Loading, Guillermo Bustamante

Theses and Dissertations

The lateral resistance of pile foundations has typically been based on the resistance of circular pipe piles. In addition, most instrumented lateral load tests and cases history have involved circular piles. However, piles used in engineering practice may also be non-circular cross-section piles such as square and H piles. Some researchers have theorized that the lateral resistance of square piles will be higher than that of circular piles (Reese and Van Impe, 2001; Briaud et al, 1983; Smith, 1987) for various reasons, but there is not test data to support this claims. To provide basic comparative performance data, lateral load …

B1 Mapping For Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Daniel Joseph Park Dec 2014

B1 Mapping For Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Daniel Joseph Park

Theses and Dissertations

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-ionizing form of medical imaging which has practical uses in diagnosing, characterizing, and studying diseases in vivo. Current clinical practice utilizes a highly trained radiologist to view MR images and qualitatively diagnose, characterize, or study a disease. There is no easy way to compare qualitative data. That is why developing quantitative measures in MRI show promise. Quantitative measures of disease can be compared across a population, MRI sites, and over time. Osteoarthritis is one disease where those who have it may benefit from the development of quantitative MRI measures. Those benefits may include earlier …

Measurement Based Statistical Model For Path Loss Prediction For Relaying Systems Operating In 1900 Mhz Band, Masoud Dao Hamid Dec 2014

Measurement Based Statistical Model For Path Loss Prediction For Relaying Systems Operating In 1900 Mhz Band, Masoud Dao Hamid

Theses and Dissertations

Relays play important role in deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced systems. They are used to enhance coverage, throughput and system capacity. The impact of the relay deployment on the network planning has to be modeled so that the above mentioned goals can be achieved. For successful modeling one needs to predict the path loss on the link between an eNodeB and a relay station. The review of literature shows that there is a general shortage of measured data to help empirical understanding of the propagation conditions in relay environment. This dissertation aims at developing empirical path loss …

Holographic-Based Leaky Wave Antennas And Phonon-Enhanced Waveguides For Infrared Applications, Franklin Muriuki Manene Dec 2014

Holographic-Based Leaky Wave Antennas And Phonon-Enhanced Waveguides For Infrared Applications, Franklin Muriuki Manene

Theses and Dissertations

This work contributes to critical requirements for antenna-coupled detection applications: 1) large capture cross section with design control of angular response and 2) long propagation lengths of complex signals. Antenna-coupled detectors for infrared applications provide appreciable capture cross sections while delivering signals to sub-wavelength-sized detectors. In this work, leaky-wave antennas are considered for the first time in the infrared spectrum. Design characterization of angular radiation patterns as well as polarization is presented. While leaky-wave antennas hold great promise for enhancing capture cross section, thus narrowing the field of view of the detector, there is a parallel need to preserve coherent …

Design And Analysis Of Robotically-Controlled Minimally Invasive Surgical Instruments, Jordan D. Tanner Nov 2014

Design And Analysis Of Robotically-Controlled Minimally Invasive Surgical Instruments, Jordan D. Tanner

Theses and Dissertations

Robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery is used to perform intricate surgical tasks through small incisions using long, slender instruments. The miniaturization of these instruments is advantageous to both surgeon and patient because smaller instruments reduce trauma to surrounding tissue, decrease patient recovery times, and can be used in confined spaces otherwise inaccessible using larger instruments. However, miniaturization of existing designs is limited by friction between moving parts, the volume occupied by the end effector, and manufacturing and assembly constraints. The objective of this work is to develop and analyze concepts that can be used in robot-assisted needlescopic surgery. The concepts are …

Gasification Of Biomass, Coal, And Petroleum Coke At High Heating Rates And Elevated Pressure, Aaron D. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Gasification is a process used to convert any carbonaceous species through heterogeneous reaction to obtain the desired gaseous products of H2 and CO which are used to make chemicals, liquid transportation fuels, and power. Both pyrolysis and heterogeneous gasification occur in commercial entrained-flow gasifiers at pressures from 4 to 65 atm with local gas temperatures as high as 2000 °C. Many gasification studies have been performed at moderate temperatures, heating rates, and pressures. In this work, both pyrolysis and char gasification experiments were performed on coal, petroleum coke, and biomass at conditions pertinent to commercial entrained-flow gasifiers. Rapid biomass pyrolysis …

A Solid-State Ion Detector For Use In Portable Mass Spectrometry, Sadek Salman Sabbah Nov 2014

A Solid-State Ion Detector For Use In Portable Mass Spectrometry, Sadek Salman Sabbah

Theses and Dissertations

Mass spectrometry has long been used as a scientific tool in a wide variety of applications. A portable mass spectrometer would make many of these applications faster and more efficient. One of the key components of a mass spectrometer is its ion detection system; to make a mass spectrometer portable, this system must be small and involve as few components as possible. Single ion detection has been achieved through several methods, nearly all of which are well-known and understood. These methods, however, often require bulky vacuum and/or cooling systems in order to achieve high sensitivity. An ion detection system that …

Preparation Of Active, Stable Supported Iron Catalysts And Deactivation By Carbon Of Cobalt Catalysts For Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, Kamyar Keyvanloo

Theses and Dissertations

The first half of this dissertation reports the development of supported Fe FT catalysts including the effects of various, carefully chosen preparation methods on the performance of alumina-supported iron/copper/potassium (FeCuK/Al2O3); it was determined that non-aqueous slurry impregnation and co-impregnation yielded catalysts with activities as high as any reported in the literature. Furthermore, the effects of support properties including pore size, hydroxyl group concentration, and support stabilizer were investigated for FeCuK/Al2O3 catalysts containing 20 or 40% Fe. For the first time, we report the performance of a supported Fe FT catalyst that is not only more active and stable than any …

Design Considerations In The Development And Actuation Of Origami-Based Mechanisms, Eric W. Wilcox Nov 2014

Design Considerations In The Development And Actuation Of Origami-Based Mechanisms, Eric W. Wilcox

Theses and Dissertations

Origami-based mechanisms have unique characteristics that make them attractive for engineering applications. However, origami-based design is still a developing area of design. Continued work to increase general understanding of key design parameters specific to origami-based mechanisms will increase the ability of designers to capture the potential benefits of origami-based mechanisms. This thesis presents a fundamental study of origami to assist designers in gaining a stronger understanding of the key parameters and capabilities of origami-based mechanisms. As a starting point a study of fundamental motions in action origami models (those that exhibit motions in their folded state) is presented to explore …

Fault Detection For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles With Non-Redundant Sensors, Brandon Jeffrey Cannon Nov 2014

Fault Detection For Unmanned Aerial Vehicles With Non-Redundant Sensors, Brandon Jeffrey Cannon

Theses and Dissertations

To operate, autonomous systems of necessity employ a variety of sensors to perceive their environment. Many small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are unable to carry redundant sensors due to size, weight, and power (SWaP) constraints. Faults in these sensors can cause undesired behavior, including system instability. Thus, detection of faults in these non-redundant sensors is of paramount importance. The problem of detecting sensor faults in non-redundant sensors on board autonomous aircraft is non-trivial. Factors that make development of a solution difficult include both an inability to perfectly characterize systems and sensors as well as the SWaP constraints inherent with small UAV. …

The method is then used to obtain solutions to three specific extended surface heat transfer problems: 1. a radiating annular fin, 2. convective and radiative exchange between the surface of a continuously moving strip and its surroundings, and 3. convection from a fin with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and variable cross-sectional area. The results for each of these …

Co-Firing Biomass With Biogas In Cookstoves With A Fan, Manil Poudyal Oct 2014

Co-Firing Biomass With Biogas In Cookstoves With A Fan, Manil Poudyal

Theses and Dissertations

Co-firing is a combustion process in which more than one type of fuel is used. In many cases, co-firing reduces fuel costs and/or reduces the environmental impact. The objective of this research was to test the hypothesis that adding biogas to be co-fired with biomass in a traditional cookstove reduces indoor air pollution and increases the combustion efficiency. The impact of co-firing on indoor air pollution is assessed by comparing the concentrations of carbon monoxide and particulate matter in the exhaust stream of a co-fired cookstove to a cookstove fueled with biomass alone. The concentrations of each of these pollutants …

Characterization Of Postural Tremor In Essential Tremor Using A Seven-Degree-Of-Freedom Model, Daniel William Geiger Oct 2014

Characterization Of Postural Tremor In Essential Tremor Using A Seven-Degree-Of-Freedom Model, Daniel William Geiger

Theses and Dissertations

Essential Tremor (ET), a condition characterized by postural and kinetic tremor in the upper limbs, is one of the most prevalent movement disorders. While pharmaceutical and surgical treatment options exist, they are not ideal. Assistive devices have the potential to provide relief to patients but are largely unexplored for ET. Furthermore, prior characterizations of essential tremor have focused on endpoint tremor and provide insufficient detail for designing such a device. We propose and demonstrate a novel method for characterizing essential tremor in the 7 proximal degrees of freedom (DOF) of the upper limb in various postures. In addition, we provide …

Towards A Dynamic View Of Genetic Networks: A Kalman Filtering Framework For Recovering Temporally-Rewiring Stable Networks From Undersampled Data, Jehandad Khan Sep 2014

Towards A Dynamic View Of Genetic Networks: A Kalman Filtering Framework For Recovering Temporally-Rewiring Stable Networks From Undersampled Data, Jehandad Khan

Theses and Dissertations

It is widely accepted that cellular requirements and environmental conditions dictate the architecture of genetic regulatory networks. Nonetheless, the status quo in regulatory network modeling and analysis assumes an invariant network topology over time. We refocus on a dynamic perspective of genetic networks, one that can uncover substantial topological changes in network structure during biological processes such as developmental growth and cancer progression. We propose a novel outlook on the inference of time-varying genetic networks, from a limited number of noisy observations, by formulating the networks estimation as a target tracking problem. Assuming linear dynamics, we formulate a constrained Kalman …

Zinc oxide is an electro-optic material with the potential to produce high performance electronics …

Convective Heat Transfer With And Without Film Cooling In High Temperature, Fuel Rich And Lean Environments, Nathan K. Greiner Sep 2014

Convective Heat Transfer With And Without Film Cooling In High Temperature, Fuel Rich And Lean Environments, Nathan K. Greiner

Theses and Dissertations

Modern turbine engines require high turbine inlet temperatures and pressures to maximize thermal efficiency. Increasing the turbine inlet temperature drives higher heat loads on the turbine surfaces. In addition, increasing pressure ratio increases the turbine coolant temperature such that the ability to remove heat decreases. As a result, highly effective external film cooling is required to reduce the heat transfer to turbine surfaces. Testing of film cooling on engine hardware at engine temperatures and pressures can be exceedingly difficult and expensive. Thus, modern studies of film cooling are often performed at near ambient conditions. However, these studies are missing an …

This research addresses several limitations of current graph-based Air Traffic Management optimization methods by incorporating techniques to account for stochastic effects, physical inertia and variable arrival sequencing. In addition, this research provides insight into the performance of multiple methods for approximating non-differentiable air traffic constraints, and incorporates these methods into a generalized weighted-sum representation …

Experimental Uncertainty Associated With Traveling Wave Excitation, Geofrey S. Cox Sep 2014

Experimental Uncertainty Associated With Traveling Wave Excitation, Geofrey S. Cox

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation research produces the experimental techniques required to evaluate mistuning in any rotor. Within operation, a rotor is subjected to a unique pattern of frequencies acting to excite the rotor. Utilizing traveling wave excitation, a rotor's critical frequencies and the respective excitation pattern are reproduced. Individual rotor blade frequency response functions are evaluated and statistically analyzed. The experimental results serve to not only verify the degree to which a rotor is mistuned, but also to provide an indication of the forced response amplification the mistuning induces. Within the experiment, definitive specifications were developed to ensure peak rotor responses. Numerical …

Optimization Algorithms For Inference And Classification Of Genetic Profiles From Undersampled Measurements, Belhassen Bayar Sep 2014

Optimization Algorithms For Inference And Classification Of Genetic Profiles From Undersampled Measurements, Belhassen Bayar

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we tackle three different problems, all related to optimization techniques for inference and classification of genetic profiles. First, we extend the deterministic Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) framework to the probabilistic case (PNMF). We apply the PNMF algorithm to cluster and classify DNA microarrays data. The proposed PNMF is shown to outperform the deterministic NMF and the sparse NMF algorithms in clustering stability and classification accuracy. Second, we propose SMURC: Small-sample MUltivariate Regression with Covariance estimation. Specifically, we consider a high dimension low sample-size multivariate regression problem that accounts for correlation of the response variables. We show that, …
