Synthetic, self-oscillating vocal fold (VF) models are physical models whose life-like vibration is induced and perpetuated by fluid flow. Self-oscillating VF models, which are often fabricated life-size from soft silicone elastomers, are used to study various aspects of voice biomechanics. Despite their many advantages, the development and use of self-oscillating VF models is limited by the casting process used to fabricate the models. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of two interface designs—traditional and heads-up displays (HUDs)—on situation awareness (SA), performance, and workload for sUAS operations. The study utilized an experimental repeated measures design to determine the relationship between interface design on the various dependent variables through a simulated search and rescue mission. Participants flew two simulated search and rescue missions to find missing persons utilizing traditional and HUD displays. Mineral oil is the most common lubricant, however, it also has poor biodegradable properties. Vegetable oils exhibit good viscosity index, flash point, pour point, tribological properties, and are biodegradable. In this thesis, An environmentally friendly and rapid synthesis of highly porous carbon nanomaterial is presented. The direct pyrolysis of the cane sugar was achieved in a hand-fabricated Teflon microchamber. Homogeneous heating and quick pyrolysis were carried out in 3 minutes using a household microwave oven. The porosity and surface area enhancement is obtained by in-step decompositions of household baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), a common household chemical. Sodium bicarbonate was specifically used to impregnate porous carbon foam with sodium oxide nanocomplexes, which were later washed to improve surface area and reduce oxygen content, making it suitable for applications such as …

This research focuses on developing polymer-derived ceramic fibers. The spun micro/nanofibers were sintered into silicon carbide/silicon nitride and tungsten carbide respectively. The relationship between processing, fiber microstructure, morphology, and purity is investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis was used to test the reinforcement capabilities of tungsten carbide fibers. EDS identified a near-perfect 1:1 Si-C ratio in silicon carbide fibers sintered between 1200 °C -1400 °C, Silicon carbide was confirmed by FTIR between 1000 °C – 1400 °C. In this thesis, effect of intermediate network systems on power usage data collection from Smart Electric Meter in Smart Grid was evaluated. Security integrity of remote data collection from GE’s Power Quality Smart Electric Meter EPM 6100 and EPM 7000 under cyber-attacks were evaluated. Experimental security evaluations of Smart Electric Meters were conducted to understand their operation under cyber-attacks. Integrity of data communication between the GE’s smart meters and remote monitoring computer was evaluated under different types of cyber security attacks. Performance comparison was done for security integrity of EPM 6100 and EPM 7000 power quality meter under various cyber-attacks.

There are a few different bearing health monitoring technologies currently used in the railroad industry, both reactive and preventative detection systems. Reactive models have proven to be ineffective in monitoring bearing health, which has resulted in either unnecessary train stoppages and delays or in-service failures and bearing burn-off leading to catastrophic train derailments. Wayside preventative detection systems, while more effective than reactive technologies, are scarce and neglect railcars’ that do not travel over a specific route. The aerodynamics and flow field characteristics of a NACA 0010 airfoil with leading-edge modifications were investigated in flow with freestream turbulence intensity of 4%. A set of 4 airfoils, each of them with different wavelength (4, 8, 10, 12 tubercles along the spanwise direction) was experimentally studied. An unmodified NACA 0010 airfoil was used as baseline. The Reynolds number was varied from 201,200 to 351,600. The angle of attack was varied within the range of -6 to 20 degrees. The purpose of this thesis is to study the reaction to the Lorentz force induced during the hypersonic regime of flight by an active magnetic field. The effect that a magnetic array has on the flight characteristics of a blunt body during Earth atmospheric entry is characterized and isolated for independent analysis. Flight testing is an important part of in the airplane design process. This testing is performed to ensure that the airplane complies with the established requirements and regulations for flight safety, as well as to ensure it meets its mission objectives. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently governs these requirements and regulations for civilian aircraft and provides airworthiness certifications. The FAA regulations were introduced in 1965. Prior to that, civilian aircraft were certified through the Civil Aeronautics Administration using Civil Air Regulations (CARs).

This thesis research aims to implement a simple yet effective simplified vehicle operations (SVO) scheme that uses a Garmin autopilot system to create a pilot-on-the-loop controller to help prevent loss of control incidents from occurring. In this paper, a preliminary design of a voltage-tunable microstrip attenuator using Laser Scribed graphene (LSG) is proposed. The paper will demonstrate that the fabrication of LSG from graphene oxide on standard doubled-sided FR-4 Copper-clad Substrate can be used as a voltage-controlled resistor that results in a tunable microstrip attenuator across the microwave frequencies from 50MHz to 5.5GHz. The measured attenuation ranges from 2.6 dB to 11.5dB at 4 GHz with a DC bias voltage ranging from 0V (minimum attenuation) to 6.0V (maximum attenuation). Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) has positioned itself as one of the most promising candidates for various applications since its introduction by Miller and Kolbitz in 1985 [53, 44]. The core operation for ECC is the scalar multiplication [k]P where many efforts have addressed its computation speed. Here we introduce an efficient approach for calculating elliptic curve operations by a novel regrouping of terms and creating new projective representation operators and increasing parallelism. Delamination between composite layers is one of primary weaknesses in composite material structure. Various researchers have developed techniques to control delamination in laminated structures. One of these techniques is “interleaving,” adding high toughness material to key interfaces in a laminate. This research studies using polyester veil as a low-cost interleaf alternative to other materials and focuses on a non-woven, polyester spunbond material. Hurricanes can lead to the loss of millions of dollars and the death of hundreds of people. The increasing concentration of people in coastal cities, exacerbates this problem and results in greater hurricane damage to residential buildings. In particular, recent hurricanes in Florida have shown the vulnerability of mid/high-rise buildings (MHRB) to hurricane-induced water ingress. However, few damage models are able to produce realistic estimates of interior damage. A satellite attitude control system was developed in MathWork’s Simulink for a 6U CubeSat with a flexible appendage payload. The flexible appendage is a boom that is able to store into a compact size and deploy out to 1 meter. The boom deploys a sensor attached to the end of the boom. The boom/sensor payload was modeled as a spring-mass-damper system. The equivalent spring constant of the payload was determined by the the natural frequency of the system.
