A comprehensive laboratory testing plan was conducted as part of this project to select two frost-susceptible soils for use in constructing three full-scale test strips. A total of 16 soils were obtained from various suppliers in NJ and were evaluated to determine their frost-susceptibility. The evaluation included conducting sieve analysis, hydrometer analysis, and specific gravity. Using these measures, two soils were selected (namely, Soil #2 and Soil #13) for constructing the test strips. The properties (Atterberg Limits, moisture-density relationships, California bearing ratio (CBR), Resilient Modulus among others) were determined through a laboratory testing plan. Satellite radiometers are used to remotely measure properties of the Earth's surface. Radiometers enable wide spatial coverage and daily temporal coverage. Radiometer measurements are used in a wide array of applications, including freeze/thaw states inference, vegetation index calculations, rainfall estimation, and soil moisture estimation. Resolution enhancement of these radiometer measurements enable finer details to be resolved and improve our understanding of Earth. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radiometer was launched in April 2014 with a goal to produce high resolution soil moisture estimates. Precision Maritime Landing Of Autonomous Multirotor Aircraft With Real-Time Kinematic Gnss, Matthew Kent Rydalch

In this thesis two methods were developed for precise maritime landing of an autonomous multirotor aircraft based on real-time kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The first method called RTK-localized method (RLM) uses RTK GNSS measurements to localize a sea vessel and execute the landing. RLM was demonstrated outdoors in hardware and landed on a physically simulated boat called a mock-boat with an average landing error of 9.7 cm. The mock-boat was actuated to have boat-like motion and a forward velocity of ~2 m/s. This method showed that accurate landing is possible with RTK GNSS as the primary means …

Density gradation has been analytically and experimentally proven to enhance the load-bearing and energy absorption efficiency of cellular solids. This research focuses on the analytical optimization (by virtual experiments) of polymeric honeycomb structures made from flexible thermoplastics to achieve density-graded structures with desired mechanical properties. The global stress-strain curves of single-density honeycomb structures are used as input to an analytical model that enables the characterization of the constitutive response of density-graded hexagonal honeycombs with discrete and continuous gradations and for various gradients. Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a devastating gastrointestinal disease characterized by the production of mucinous ascites within the peritoneal cavity. Historically, this condition is discovered in the advanced state due to the lack of adequate screening tests and typically presents as an enlarged abdomen and with symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. Treatment for this disease is a combination of cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal perfusion chemotherapy, but a successful operation does not guarantee full remission of this malignancy. In this study, multi-step outflow experiments and numerical modeling were performed for homogeneous and layered column conditions with fine to coarse sands to investigate water flow mechanisms and better predict water flow and solute transport with the van Genuchten-Mualem (VGM) hydraulic model. Inversed modeling under HYDRUS-1D was performed to estimate six VGM soil hydraulic parameters. The basal forebrain (BF) is comprised of several nuclei including the substantia innominata, medial septum, nucleus basalis and diagonal band of broca which are involved in cognitive functions including attention, motivation, and arousal. BF neurons are particularly vulnerable to dysfunction and degeneration in aged humans and, more dramatically, in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Age-related BF dysfunction may reflect diminished afferent regulation as well as an altered local glial environment. Our lab has previously shown reduced orexin/hypocretin innervation of BF in aging, a phenomenon that may link afferent dysfunction with altered microglial homeostasis. Strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) is a well-tested procedure for the synthesis of supported monometallic and bimetallic nanoparticles with ultrasmall size (< 2 nm). Where, previous studies have laid the foundation for SEA using a variety of powdered supports, catalysts in this form are not suited for large volume chemical applications where pressure drop is critical to the process economics. Although there is no fundamental difference between the surface functional groups on powdered and extruded supports, the present study examined electrostatic adsorption as it relates to proton diffusion, precursor diffusion, and capillary imbibition.

Three formed alumina spheres and one carbon extrudate were selected for study. The alumina spheres, provided by BASF, were developmental materials with varying pore size distributions between 12 and 24800 angstroms. The carbon, provided by ADM and manufactured by CABOT, was strictly microporous in structure and was included to investigate the differences in mass transport as a function of support material.
