Approaches To Improve The Execution Time Of A Quantum Network Simulation, Joseph B. Tippit
Approaches To Improve The Execution Time Of A Quantum Network Simulation, Joseph B. Tippit
Theses and Dissertations
Evaluating quantum networks is an expensive and time-consuming task that benefits from simulation. A potential improvement is to utilize GPUs, namely by leveraging NVIDIA's programming framework, CUDA. To avoid performance pitfalls of higher level languages and programming models such as the so called "two language problem," the Julia Programming Language provides the basis for the development effort. This research develops a two module prototype quantum network simulation framework using GPUs and Julia. Performance of the software is measured and compared against other languages such as MATLAB.

Charged Particle Environment Testing Of A Deep Space Radiation Shield With Associated Fabrication And Calibration Of Pulsed Power Systems, Mark Bedford Moffett
Theses and Dissertations
Space radiation is one of the primary dangers faced outside of the protective magnetosphere of Earth. Despite the persistent radiation threat to self-contained human habitation and the risk of increased exposure during long-duration missions, reliable long-term radiation protection is not well-developed. Active shielding is an avenue of preventative radiation protection that could be deployed to protect astronauts and biological life from the effects of radiation. This dissertation explores the design scalability of an active magnetic shield for protecting against isotropic radiation in deep space. Each shield is composed of two concentric, elliptical layers of circular conducting coils, each arranged like …
A Comparative Study On The Application Of Intelligent Algorithms As The Solution Of Inverse Heat Conduction Problems, Dominic Allard
A Comparative Study On The Application Of Intelligent Algorithms As The Solution Of Inverse Heat Conduction Problems, Dominic Allard
Theses and Dissertations
A critical component necessary for the safety and survival of space vehicles are the thermal protection systems (TPS). Especially when subject to atmospheric re-entry, the heating loads subject to the space vehicle requires the implementation of extensive protection. The TPS commonly used currently are passive ablative materials which burn away under extreme heat flux. Due to the nature of the material and the incident heat flux, it is not feasible to attain accurate, real-time measurements for the boundary conditions with sensors placed on the surface of the space vehicle. The ability to do such would allow opportunities to implement active …

Machine Learning Application For Mission Data Reprogramming, Paolo A. Bingham
Machine Learning Application For Mission Data Reprogramming, Paolo A. Bingham
Theses and Dissertations
Before entering a conflict or theater, USAF aircraft require updated mission data software reprogramming. Mission data controls all electronic warfare (EW) operations of the aircraft. EW operations include identifying and jamming radar operated systems, whether they are friendly or hostile. The process of reprogramming software is continuous and routinely updated for every EW system annually. On specific circumstances, the process can be expedited to months, but this puts a strain on the development team and shifts all attention to one specific mission data file. Unfortunately, a growing number of requests to upgrade mission data to a higher priority state, has …

The screening processes at airports, including passengers and baggage, have changed dramatically in the past twenty years. The goal of the X-ray scanning is to enhance airport screening by preventing passengers from carrying weapons and contraband. X-ray is more effective compared to traditional pat-down. The X-ray shoots beams through passengers and their baggage, which provides an inner view to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners. Issues and concerns of the use of X-ray have also been raised, as some passengers complained about possible health issues due to the body exposure of radioactive waves; other experts pointed out possible human factor …
Helicopter Flight Energy Modeling And Scaling For Urban Air Mobility Applications, Nolan Gene Hopkins
Helicopter Flight Energy Modeling And Scaling For Urban Air Mobility Applications, Nolan Gene Hopkins
Theses and Dissertations
The costs associated with conducting full-scale helicopter flight tests in terms of both time and money beg to question the validity of using small-scale model helicopters in order to predict full-scale performance. To do this, the energy change for a small time interval is determined throughout a full-scale helicopter’s flight of a given profile, and the overall energy use compared to model results. The profile is then scaled based on a variety of factors, and the accuracy of energy scaling compared for each. Scaling dimensions based off helicopter weight and energy reserve modeling show promising results, but comparison of relative …
Flight Test Evaluation Of Elevator Stick Force Gradients On General Aviation Aircraft, Isaac Lee Faust
Flight Test Evaluation Of Elevator Stick Force Gradients On General Aviation Aircraft, Isaac Lee Faust
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to establish a suitable method of changing elevator stick force gradients on a Piper Warrior II. After finding a range of stick force gradients, the gradients will later be evaluated to get handling qualities ratings. A stick force gradient is the change in stick force as the airspeed deviates from trim condition. An aircraft’s yoke force gives pilots haptic feedback which improves their situational awareness without the need to assess instrument readings. A high stick force gradient will give the pilots a lot of feedback but will require more physical exertion to fly the …

A Joint Soft Warping And Clustering Approach To Detecting Time Series Anomalies, Christopher John Schuchmann
A Joint Soft Warping And Clustering Approach To Detecting Time Series Anomalies, Christopher John Schuchmann
Theses and Dissertations
Unsupervised anomalous time series detection methods focus on identifying outliers without prior knowledge of the dataset. However, these methods often require multiple parameters to be optimized, with adequate performance tied to their careful tuning and prior domain knowledge. In this work, two methods are proposed for detecting outlier time series that adopt a joint clustering and alignment optimization to filter out the desired signals. The time series are globally clustered while simultaneously being aligned to other signals in their same cluster group. This alternating optimization employs time-warping similarity measures to help identify closely matching time series as well as the …

Recent incidents such as the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Min- neapolis, Minnesota, and the I-85/Piedmont Road fire and subsequent bridge collapse in Atlanta, Georgia, have brought identification of transportation network vulnerabilities to the forefront of UDOT’s planning efforts. Traditional estimates of transportation network impacts have focused on increases to user travel time or the volume of affected traffic, but studies of these disasters have revealed that when facing a degraded transportation network, people adjust their trip making in terms of destination, mode, and …
Numerical Validation Of A Cryogenic Thermo-Fluid Mixing Model, Sean William Bowman
Numerical Validation Of A Cryogenic Thermo-Fluid Mixing Model, Sean William Bowman
Theses and Dissertations
Thermal management of a hot convective gaseous flow can be achieved by the injection of a cold liquid stream. This cooling effect is constrained by the amount of liquid injected, the rate of evaporation of the liquid, and the length of the domain. In this study, such a domain is referred to as a “mixer”. The mixer used to facilitate this process is designed with a venturi geometry, such that the throat of the pipe creates a drop in the static pressure of the gaseous crossflow. Liquid coolant can thereby be passively entrained from a central pipe (plenum) by the …

Coupling A Parametric Wave Model Into Hydrodynamic Ocean Circulation Forecasts To Improve Efficiency Of Nested Estuarine Storm Surge Predictions, Caleb Tye Lodge
Coupling A Parametric Wave Model Into Hydrodynamic Ocean Circulation Forecasts To Improve Efficiency Of Nested Estuarine Storm Surge Predictions, Caleb Tye Lodge
Theses and Dissertations
Efficiency in storm surge modeling is crucial for forecasting coastal hazards in real-time. While computation cost is trivial to organizations with ample resources, the robustness of forecasts generated by most parties are restricted by wall-clock time. The Parametric Wave Model (PARAM) was developed by Boyd and Weaver (2021) as an alternative to computationally expensive wind-wave models when modeling estuarine environments. For this study, PARAM has been tightly coupled with the ADCIRC hydrodynamic model to become ADCparam, then integrated into the Multistage ensemble forecast system, a one-way nesting framework for modeling waves and circulation in coastal estuaries developed by Taeb and …

Surgical intervention using autografts and allografts is the current gold standard used in the clinic for the repair and regeneration of musculoskeletal injuries, but these treatment options are associated with major limitations such as donor-site morbidity, need for multiple surgeries, immune-related complications, and risk for disease transmission. Over the past three decades, the development and application of tissue engineering strategies for restoration and reconstruction of damaged or diseased musculoskeletal tissues have gained considerable momentum …
Forecasting Sep Events Based On Merged Cme Catalogs Using Machine Learning, Peter William Tarsoly
Forecasting Sep Events Based On Merged Cme Catalogs Using Machine Learning, Peter William Tarsoly
Theses and Dissertations
The lack of preparation for a Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event may be catastrophic for astronauts and aircraft passengers alike, along with their electronic equipment. It is widely theorized that SEP events are caused by Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), some occurring up to a full day beforehand, accompanied by additional space weather conditions. The only significant models for SEP forecasting are statistically or machine learning-based, often developed on imprecise data. We present an enhanced catalog of CMEs, along with other space weather phenomena, and their relationship with the occurrence of SEP events. Using the enhanced CME catalog, we combine machine …
