Continuous bending under tension (CBT) has been shown to increase room temperature elongation-to-failure (ETF) in various sheet metals past that of simple tension (ST). In commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) Grade 4, up to 3x extended elongation over ST has been achieved. A greater understanding of deformation mechanisms in CBT would allow for its elongation-enhancing effects to be more fully exploited in HCP and other metals, creating potential for new forming strategies. Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a nonspecific and persistent ailment that entails many physiological, psychological, social, and economic consequences for individuals and societies. Although there is a plethora of treatments available to treat CLBP, each treatment has varying efficacy for different patients, and it is currently unknown how to best link patients to their ideal treatment. Flexible high-deflection strain gauges have been demonstrated as cost-effective and accessible sensors for capturing human biomechanical deformations. However, the interpretation of these sensors is notably more complex compared to conventional strain gauges, partially owing to the viscoelastic nature of the strain gauges. On top of the non-linear viscoelastic behavior, dynamic resistance response is even more difficult to capture due to spikes in resistance during strain changes. In this study we present a high-performance computing architecture and hardware acceleration strategy for a heterogeneous multi-gigabit computing system. The system architecture integrates a BeeGFS distributed file system, capable of achieving 80 Gbps of sustained write throughput across five nodes, essential for managing the high data volumes generated by a 25 high performance computer (HPC) compute cluster. To ensure operational efficiency and scalability, the tasks performed on the Linux compute cluster consisting of 30 nodes are automated using Ansible, facilitating seamless deployment, management, and updates. WiFi is a strong substitute that supports positioning based on indoor floor plans. In this thesis, the Principal Featured - Kohonen Deep Structure (PF-KDS) model is developed to position WiFi devices more accurately and efficiently for indoor floor planning. The laminar, thermally developing flow of gases in a two-dimensional parallel plate channel is studied here. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the combined effects of convection and real gas radiation are explored. Gas mixtures composed of H2O, CO2, and N2 are considered. To account for radiation in the participating medium, the Spectral Line Weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model is used. The model formulation, verification, and validation are provided through published articles written by the primary author. For Utah Lake in Utah, USA, we analyzed a uniquely comprehensive and longitudinal water quality dataset that extended over two summer sampling seasons. We measured 61 parameters using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), YSI ProDSS water sondes, and laboratory procedures to quantify and characterize dissolved and suspended behavior of trace elements in Utah Lake. We analyzed the data using principal component analysis (PCA) and multidimensional scaling (MDS) to understand the lake geochemistry and inform Utah Lake management decisions regarding nutrients and algal blooms. Tremor affects millions of people and many patients desire alternative treatment options to medication or neural surgery. Peripheral suppression techniques are gaining greater use, but are currently applied in a trial-and-error method. To optimize these techniques, the muscles most responsible for an individual patient's tremor need to be identified. In this dissertation, I explored two parallel paths that both could aid in identifying muscles responsible for tremor. Irrigation of residential properties in urban settings is typified by small and irregular areas, many untrained water users, limited end-use metering, and differing groundcover in contrast to agricultural settings. This makes analyzing irrigation patterns to promote efficient water use challenging. Analysis of Irrigation by Remote Sensing (AIRS) combines multispectral aerial imagery, evapotranspiration data, and ground-truthed measurements to overcome these challenges. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an emerging tool for creating patient-specific tissue constructs analogous to the native tissue microarchitecture. In this study, anatomically equivalent 3D nerve conduits were developed using thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) by combining reverse engineering and material extrusion (i.e., fused deposition modelling) technique.

Printing parameters were optimized to fabricate nerve-equivalent TPU constructs. The TPU constructs printed with different infill densities supported the adhesion, proliferation, and gene expression of neuronal cells. Following wildfires, water quality in forested watersheds is prone to degradation, impacting drinking water treatment and causing increased emissions due to additional energy consumption. We explore the potential for climate-based financing to support wildfire mitigation and watershed restoration and thereby reduce potential water treatment energy demand within the Provo River watershed of Utah, USA. Pre- and post-wildfire erosion and water quality in the Provo River is modeled using GeoWEPP. Energy data from the Don A. In 2014 the Thermo Scientific N2 electronic personal dosimeter became the aircrews’ sole means to record ionizing radiation dose. The production of this dosimeter was discontinued in July of 2021, motivating the Air Force to seek a flight-certifiable replacement. The Thermo Scientific Trudose NG, Mirion DMC 3000, and Fuji NRF-51 electronic personal dosimeters, as well as the Landauer InLight optically stimulated luminescent dosimeter, were subjected to mixed gamma and fast neutron fields simulating a high-altitude flight environment. Dosimeters are evaluated on their consistency and accuracy in reporting dose and compared to the current N2 dosimeter’s reported dose.

This study evaluates the yield behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6-4 specimens in combined loading. Specimens were probed for yield across multiple load combinations along a given yield surface, holding pin one mode while applying load increments in the other mode until yield was detected. In combined loading, the yield surfaces across varied print parameters showed statistically significant, but negligible differences. This research sought to characterize the yield behavior across print parameters with the goal of increasing manufacturability. In this work, a Newtonian aerodynamic model was developed for an elliptic cone glide geometry at a variety of angles of attack, and a functional relationship between an input angle of attack and the vehicle lift and drag coefficients was developed. This model was used in a direct orthogonal collocation framework to simulate a series of boost-glide trajectories, with objectives of minimum distance to target, minimum time to target, and maximum velocity to target. This research explores the effectiveness of predicting composite failure subject to quasi-static loading conditions using computational methods. FEA models were created using Abaqus and were employed to predict composite yield and initial failure behavior. Boundary conditions are generated to replicate the loading scenario seen in the experimental tests. Computationally predicted structural response of the composite range in accuracy from a 2% difference compared to experimental values to a maximum of 63%.

With this manipulation, one hypothesis is that the magnetic field increases the current produced by the solar cell which helps to increase the power and efficiency of the solar cell.
