Steady-State Operation Of Bench-Scale Activated Sludge Process Using Phenol And 2-Chlorophenol As Substrates, Jeffrey Richard Caputi
Steady-State Operation Of Bench-Scale Activated Sludge Process Using Phenol And 2-Chlorophenol As Substrates, Jeffrey Richard Caputi
Theses
Experiments were conducted to determine whether a continuous process similar to the common activated sludge process could be operated at a relative steady state with phenol and 2-chlorophenol as the sole carbon sources. After a number of unsuccessful trials, process conditions were developed which allowed for operation at a relative steady state with respect to the concentration of microorganisms in the reactor and the concentration of phenol and 2-chlorophenol in the effluent.
Phenol and 2-chlorophenol were removed at better than 99 percent efficiency on a continuous basis. The mixed liquor grown under the conditions of the experiment was highly filamentous …
The Effect Of Inorganic Salts On Adsorption Of Organics By Fly Ash, Pai-Yuan Horng
The Effect Of Inorganic Salts On Adsorption Of Organics By Fly Ash, Pai-Yuan Horng
Theses
Optimum amounts of inorganic salts ( monovalent, divalent, and trivalent chlorides ) added to various bituminous coal fly ashes in batch adsorption treatment experiments indicates the possibility of improving adsorption capacity.
Experiments were conducted on aqueous solutions of three priority pollutants : phenol, toluene, benzene. Both high fusion and low fusion fly ashes were used as sorbent materials. Removal of organic pollutants was measured using a total organic carbon analyzer.
Isotherm tests positively indicate that the addition of inorganic salts to fly ash significantly increases adsorption capacity. The study shows that removal of organic pollutants by fly ash depends on …
The Kinetics And Mechanism Studies Of Cathodic Electro-Initiated Crosslinking Polymerization Of Unsaturated Polyester Prepolymer, Joseph Yuan-Ji Sheng
The Kinetics And Mechanism Studies Of Cathodic Electro-Initiated Crosslinking Polymerization Of Unsaturated Polyester Prepolymer, Joseph Yuan-Ji Sheng
Theses
The cathodic electro-initiated polymerization reaction of the unsaturated polyester prepolymer has been found to have the characteristics of the first order ionic initiation polymerization mechanism. The rate of polymer formation is directly proportional to the current intensity and voltage supplied, but inversely proportional to the reaction temperature. The rate of initiation can be expressed as a function of the initial concentration of the prepolymer, residence time and reaction temperature. The rate expression of the initiation step has been derived based upon the experimental data collected as follows:
ln W = k0 exp[-Ea/RT] Ca0 ln t + ln b
where k0 …

Performance Of Second Order Delta Modulation System, Reza Aghazadeh Alavi
Performance Of Second Order Delta Modulation System, Reza Aghazadeh Alavi
Theses
The performance of an ordinary delta modulation (DM) system under three types of input signals was investigated. These signals were band limited Gaussian noise, 800 Hz sine wave, and speech signal. The affects of 2nd DM added to the ordinary DM in improving the performance of the system were researched. This is called a Second Order Delta Modulation System. The obtained data showed an increase of about 3dB in the overall Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the system, in the worse case.
Input to the 2nd DM is the band limited error of the first DM. A linear phase …

Theses
MRP II has been used universally as a tool for production planning in various manufacturing systems. Its foundation of success is based on an accurate inventory management. Due to the rational pricing of computer hardware and software, the selection of an appropriate off-the-shelf MRP II package has become an important topic. Moreover, implementation of a commercial MRP II package significantly affects its capability of handling an assigned task. The scope of this thesis is to discuss how to successfully implement MRP II through a design and development of a proper inventory data base in order to expand its application. The …
Mathematical Modelling Of The Simultaneous Diffusion Of Egta And Caegta And Ca2+ In A Two-Compartment System Representing Skinned Smooth Muscle, Roderick Jon Hausser
Mathematical Modelling Of The Simultaneous Diffusion Of Egta And Caegta And Ca2+ In A Two-Compartment System Representing Skinned Smooth Muscle, Roderick Jon Hausser
Theses
Smooth muscle strips "chemically skinned" with Triton X-100 represent a two-compartment system consisting of the extracellular space (ECS) and the cytosolic space (CS) bounded by the permeabilized plasma membrane. Free [Ca2+] in such systems must be controlled with sufficiently high concentrations of Ca-buffers (EGTA). The presence of Ca-buffers, however, will oppose and delay any changes in [Ca2+] in both compartments. We have developed a model describing the simultaneous diffusion of Ca 2+ , EGTA and CaEGTA between bath and ECS, and ECS and CS and the chemical reaction between ligand and metal species in each compartment. …

The Feasibility And Economics Of Resource Recovery Using Municipal Solid Waste, Joachim Aloysius Pinto
The Feasibility And Economics Of Resource Recovery Using Municipal Solid Waste, Joachim Aloysius Pinto
Theses
This thesis gives an overview of the feasibility and economics of a resource recovery project. The feasibility study of a resource recovery project is done by analyzing its markets, economics, and environmental aspects. The use of market development, accurate capital and operating cost estimation procedures and environmental impact analysis help in predicting fairly accurately the feasibility of a resource recovery facility and also gives a good estimate of the economics of the project.
The thesis also discusses the different system design that are or were used in waste-to-energy conservation. It is quite evident from the discussion that the only two …
Evaluation Of Numerical Inversion Of Laplace Transformed Solutions, Yu-Chwin Lin
Evaluation Of Numerical Inversion Of Laplace Transformed Solutions, Yu-Chwin Lin
Theses
Here, some linear physical systems are analyzed by using the standard Numerical Laplace Transformation and Inversion method, including undamped and damped systems:
1. Undamped system: A bar clamped at one end and at one end free.
2. Damped system: Viscously damped linear discrete system.
The advantage of the Numerical Laplace Transformation method is that it reduces the inversion of the Laplace transformed solution to numerical integration; it makes the problem much easier to solve. In the present work, we also studied a new Numerical Laplace Transformation Inversion method by Wilcox (App.0 and Ref.l). The merit of this new method is …

Reflections On Solid Modeling In Cad/Cam System, Yuh-Hwa Chyr
Theses
In this thesis, we will first study the mathematical fundamental for geometric modeling. It includes modeling space, representation scheme, and various characteristics for solid modeling. Then we discuss how a solid modeling system is integrated into an overall CAD/CAm system. What functions it performs, and what fuctions must be performed with other parts of the CAD/CAM systems. And how data can be transfered between solid modeling system and other CAD/CAM system.
Solid modeling has created a new era in CAD/CAM. A solid model is an unambiguous, three-dimensional, geometric representation of a design. The more design information a model can represent, …

Thermal Decomposition Of Chlorobenzene In An Atmosphere Of Hydrogen, Edward Robert Ritter
Theses
The thermal decomposition of chlozobenzene was investigated in a tubular flow reactor at 1 atmosphere total pressure and average residence times of 0.02 - 2.5 seconds. The temperature range from 800 - 1010°C was studied in both a reductive atmosphere of hydrogen and an inert atmosphere of heIium. Complete destruction of chlorobenzene occurs at about 1000°C for an average residence time of 1 second in hydrogen gas. In the inert gas, the complete destruction of the reagent was not observed in the range of conditions which were studied. The major products observed for pyrolysis in hydrogen were benzene, HCl, and …
Multi-H Continuous Phase Modulation : Its Properties And Analysis, Jyung-Cheng Chen
Multi-H Continuous Phase Modulation : Its Properties And Analysis, Jyung-Cheng Chen
Theses
Multi-h CPM, a generalization of CPFSK and also one of the so-called Combined Modulation and Coding schemes, is useful in digital communication systems where both the bandwidth and power are constrained. The increased signal processing complexity, which can be viewed as the third communication resource, is used to trade for both power and bandwidth, and to approach the error-free communication promised by Shannon's theorem.
The transmitted multi-h CPM signal carries a coded sequence of continuous phase changes; the possible phase states form a cylindrical trellis in phase and time, in which the modulation indices are reused in a cyclical fashion. …

Gas-Phase Reaction Of 1,2-Dichloroethane With Hydrogen In A Tubular Flow Reactor, Wei-Lian Lee
Theses
We have studied the reaction of 1,2-dichloroethane with H2 in three tubular flow reactors of different diameters at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range of 550° C to 1000°C. The kinetic parameters and product distribution were experimentally determined for each size reactor. The wall and bulk reaction rate constants were decoupled via analysis of three different surface to volume reaction data.
The experimental reactor was an isothermal tubular flow reactor that operated within the domain of plug flow region. The reaction was found to follow first-order kinetics with respect to 1,2-dichloroethane when in the presence of excess hydrogen. The …
A New Density-Dependent Mixing Rule For Equations Of State, Theodore John Shatynski
A New Density-Dependent Mixing Rule For Equations Of State, Theodore John Shatynski
Theses
A general procedure for the development of density-dependent mixing rules is demonstrated. This method is used to obtain a density-dependent local-composition mixing rule based on an extention of the work of Knox et al (1984). The resulting expression is tested with the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state. Results for normal and cryogenic vapor-liquid systems for both one-parameter and three-parameter versions of the mixing rule are compared with results using the classical mixing rules.
Effect Of Center Of Gravity Location On Optimum Performance Of Random Vibratory Vehicle Suspension, Daniel Mahar
Effect Of Center Of Gravity Location On Optimum Performance Of Random Vibratory Vehicle Suspension, Daniel Mahar
Theses
This study provides the analysis for the optimal design of a conventional vehicle suspension system, consisting of a sprung mass (vehicle body) and two unsprung masses (wheel frame), accentuated by the implementation of a damped absorber to the unsprung masses. Further, the effect of the c.g. (center of gravity) location of the vehicle body is investigated. A two dimensional, four degrees of freedom linear model is chosen. Randomly profiled terrain is assumed to impart hyperbolically distributed stationary vertical random displacements to the front and rear wheels. For generalization, nondimensional design parameters are selected. Criteria for optimization include the tire-terrain normal …

Analyze3d, A Structural Analysis Program Employing Membrane And Solid Finite Elements, James Mendham Gathercole
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to describe the addition of an 8 and 20-node isoparametric brick element to the finite element program ANALYZE, permitting three-dimensional analysis. The reason for the addition is that even though Analyze is a relatively simple program, its simplicity makes it a good educational tool for finite element courses. The added brick element expands the use of the program for educational purposes.
In its original form, Analyze is a finite element package for static structural analysis developed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The program consists of four finite elements: (1) bar, (2) membrane triangle, …

The Effect Of Systemic Arterial Pressure On Microvascular Flow And Transcapillary Exchange Of Macromolecules In The Hamster Cheek Pouc, Govind Mohanlal Gawdi
Theses
Microvascular flow velocities and transport of macromolecules were studied in the hamster cheek pouch under control and acute high arterial pressure conditions, with or without topical (local) application of the vasodilating agent, bradykinin. Mean arterial pressures of 130-160% control were attained by intravenous renin infusion. The microcirculation of the cheek pouch was studied using intravital microscopy. Areas with arterioles and venules were recorded on a videotape for later analysis of red cell velocity, using an RBC tracking correlator, and vessel diameter using a video shearing monitor.
In addition, vascular permeability to macromolecules was studied in the hamster cheek pouch vascular …
Zeta Potential Measurements Of Biological Flocs Using A Streaming Potential Cell, Wayne James Gallagher
Zeta Potential Measurements Of Biological Flocs Using A Streaming Potential Cell, Wayne James Gallagher
Theses
A streaming potential apparatus was assembled and tested. Its purpose was to characterize the surface of biological flocs in a wastewater environment. Samples of mixed liquor were obtained from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners wastewater treatment plant in Newark, New Jersey. Filtered mixed liquor was passed through a bed of the floc particles in the streaming potential cell, and the electric potential across the cell was measured as a function of the differential pressure drop. From these data, the zeta potential was calculated using the Helmholtz equation. Values of -0.88 and -0.44 millivolts were obtained for two mixed liquor samples.
Gallium Film Formation By Ion Cluster Beam Deposition, Te-Chuan Hsu
Gallium Film Formation By Ion Cluster Beam Deposition, Te-Chuan Hsu
Theses
Gallium thin films were deposited by Ion Cluster Beam (ICB) from pure gallium. This research had two objectives: to develop a practical method of crucible heating to generate gallium clusters; and to investigate the influence of ICB system parameters on the formation of clusters and film properties. An electron-bombardment crucible heater with a novel construction was designed. The top section of the carbon crucible was kept at a higher temperature than the middle section to prevent clogging of the nozzle and " spitting " phenomena which were found to occur with the conventional design. Crucible temperatures up to about 1360°C …
