Signal Subspace Transformation For Direction-Of-Arrival Estimation Of Wideband Sources In Near Field, Lena Chang
Signal Subspace Transformation For Direction-Of-Arrival Estimation Of Wideband Sources In Near Field, Lena Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A novel adaptive signal subspace transformation for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of wideband sources in the near-field is proposed in this paper. The method is composed of two transformations: signal subspace focusing (SSF) and far-field transformation (FFT). SSF aligns the signal subspaces for different frequencies in the bandwidth of the sources based on focusing matrices. FFT transforms the near-field steering vector to be the far-field steering vector with same direction-of-arrival (DOA) allocation. By the way, we simplify the location estimation of wideband sources in the near-field to be narrowband sources in the far field. The proposed method can track the DOAs …
Determining The Cyclic Strength Of Geomaterials Under Low Frequency Cyclic Loading With Acoustic Emission, Helsin Wang, Ta-Peng Chang, Ju-Jiang Hung
Determining The Cyclic Strength Of Geomaterials Under Low Frequency Cyclic Loading With Acoustic Emission, Helsin Wang, Ta-Peng Chang, Ju-Jiang Hung
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Acoustic emission is traditionally regarded as an explicit measurable index for microcracking in geomaterials. An accelerative cracking point is first introduced based on the different characteristics of acoustic emission at stable fracture propagation stage. Accelerative cracking point is located between the fracture initiation strength and critical energy release point, a point causing a fatal uncontrolled fracture in materials. Microcracking dominates the real mechanical characteristics in the materials, not reflected on the conventional mechanical experimental results as the stress level beyond the accelerative cracking point at the stable fracture propagation stage. At this stage, non-stress-controlled fracture in materials could arise as …
Response Analysis Of Concrete Piles Subjected To Lateral Impact, Helsin Wang, Ta-Peng Chang, Jin-Jun Wang
Response Analysis Of Concrete Piles Subjected To Lateral Impact, Helsin Wang, Ta-Peng Chang, Jin-Jun Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
One-dimensional wave theory is assumed to interpret longitudinal waves impulse response or impact echo testing results in concrete piles. Transient flexural waves tests are alternatively introduced to evaluate piles where the tops are inaccessible for conventional longitudinal wave testing. The resulting interpretation for flexural waves based on one-dimensional wave theory is improper due to various velocities at low frequencies. In this research, treating a pile as a waveguide, three-dimensional wave theory provides the dispersion relation between phase flexural velocity and frequency. Using the resonance solutions and first-mode flexural wave curve is a simple and efficient method to find the resonant …

An Algorithm For Predicting Attitudes Of Floating Bodies With Arbitrary Configurations In Liquids, Jiann-Lin Chen, Chun-I Chen, Li-Ming Chu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A robust and efficient algorithm is proposed to quasiunsteadily predict attitudes of floating bodies with arbitrary configurations. Numerical techniques for accuracy and computing time saving are addressed. A floating cylinder was modeled as a benchmark, by theoretical and experimental approaches, to validate the developed program. Attitudes of two kinds of floating bodies, which are a body composed of multiple objects and a submarine-like submersible, were simulated to show the feasibility of the present algorithm. Interestingly, the simulated results of a slender body, such as a cylinder or a submersible, show that the attitude variation is very sensitive to the longitudinal …

Fast Block Motion Estimation With Edge Alignment On H.264 Video Coding, Chi-Han Chuang, Chien-Hua Su, Shyi-Chyi Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a novel block matching scheme with edge alignment strategy on H.264 video coding, which uses multiple references and multiple block sizes for motion estimation in order to improve the rate-distortion performance. In H.264, the computational complexity is linearly dependent on the number of allowed reference frames and block sizes using the full exhaustive search. Many fast block-matching algorithms reduce the computational complexity of motion estimation by carefully designing the search patterns with different shapes or sizes which have significant impact on the search speed and distortion performance. However, the search speed and the distortion performance conflict often …

Optimal Estimation For Key Parameters Of The Marine Quality Model Using Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Marine water quality models are complicated because of their multi-parameter and multi-response characteristics. One major difficulty with water quality models is the accurate estimation of model parameters. In this paper, a new method based on a data-driven model (DDM) is developed to retrieve the value of model parameters. All training data are calculated by numerical water quality models from results of multiparameter matching design cases so the physical properties are not disturbed. The concept is to find the relationship between model parameters and the pollution concentration values of interior stations. Field data are imported into the relationship for inversing optimal …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Sidewalk is one kind of infrastructure systems in each city, because every sidewalk facility is used by pedestrians, so the maintenance algorithm should be evaluated and worked with users’ role. To echo this reasonable concept, this research investigates several using influence factors, which were collected and evaluated from pedestrians. For statistical analysis, scientific tools including Delphi method, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and fuzzy theory were used to analyze and establish a preliminary evaluation model of sidewalk maintenance system. In order to use this model pragmatically, this research also establishes a portable prototype system at PDA hardware. With this portable system, …

Hamilton Decomposition Of Complete Bipartite 3-Uniform Hypergraphs, Jirimutu Jirimutu, Jul Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The problem of finding a Hamilton decomposition of the complete 3-uniform hypergraph 3 Kn has been solved for n ≡ 2(mod 3), n ≡ 4(mod 6) [2], n ≡ 1(mod 6), n ≡ 0(mod 3) (for 3 , K I n − the complete 3-uniform hypergraph minus a 1- factor) [5]. In this paper, we give the concept of the bipartite hypergraphs and find a Hamilton decomposition of the complete bipartite hypergraph 3 Km,m for m be prime.

A Wide Speed Range Sensorless Control Technique Of Brushless Dc Motors For Electric Propulsors, Min-Fu Hsieh, Hung-Ju Liao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a sensorless drive technique for permanent-magnet brushless DC motors applied to electric propulsors of small ships or underwater vehicles. Propulsors enveloping electric motors (e.g., POD or subsea thrusters) have been increasingly applied due to their advantages of excellent maneuverability, high efficiency and low maintenance costs. To secure reliable operation under water, sensorless control is considered as an appropriate technique. However, conventional sensorless techniques often suffer problems of narrow speed range and low efficiency, particularly when the propulsors sustain heavy load at high speed operation. Hence, a sensorless technique with a wide speed range is developed in this …

Steady-State Characteristics Analysis Of Deep-Sea Running Mechanism With Planetary Gear Wheel Based On Articulated Steering Radius, Ya-Li Feng, Yi-Ting Kang, Wen-Ming Zhang, Jie Zhang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Steady-state characteristics analysis for the deep-sea running mechanism with planetary gear train which is designed to adapt to complex terrain in the deep-sea hydrothermal sulfide and rich-cobalt incrustation survey area is based on articulated steering radius. The articulated steering radius formula of the deep-sea running mechanism is derived from the geometric relationship, considering the wheel side slip angle. Based on the formula, three types of steering steady-state characteristic analysis, understeer, neutral steer and oversteer, are made for the mechanism. Steering simulation analysis of the running mechanism with planetary gear is conducted in ADAMS software with different speed. In the process …

The Study Of Ship Collision Avoidance Route Planning By Ant Colony Algorithm, Ming-Cheng Tsou, Chao-Kuang Hsueh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Maritime traffic is becoming more complex every day. At present, due to technological advances and to new maritime regulations, there is increasing demand for new nautical marine instruments to be installed into the bridge, and the breadth of navigational information complicates on-duty officers’ decisions. Therefore, if decision support tools can be used to help deal with navigational decision-making, human errors arising from subjective judgments can be reduced, and sea transport safety improved. This research uses the concept of e-navigation as a framework, positioning collision avoidance path planning as the main theme, and applies an Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) in the …

On State-Feedback Controller Synthesis For A Class Of Second-Order Nonlinear Systems With Uncertainties, Jenq-Lang Wu, Chee-Fei Yung
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a constructive method to design stabilizing controllers for a class of second-order uncertain nonlinear systems whose input parts may vanish at the origin. A sufficient condition for the existence of stabilizing state feedback controllers is provided. Under the small control property, a formula is proposed for constructing continuous stabilizing feedback laws. In the case that the small control property does not hold, another formula for constructing continuous state feedback controllers, with small control magnitude near the origin, to achieve robust practical stability is presented.

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A time-independent finite difference scheme is developed and applied to analyze the viscous flow past a translating circular cylinder. In this scheme, the instantaneous moving cylinder face is mapped to a fixed boundary and the computational domain is, therefore, time independent. Large Reynolds number and high oscillating frequency of moving cylinder are used in the analysis. The finite difference approximation and algorithm were validated by the reported numerical simulation and flow visualization. The vorticity and streamline patterns developments were described and discussed. The surface vorticity distribution and position of separation point versus phases of oscillating stages were discussed. The flow …

Design And Application Of An Image-Processing-Based Fuzzy Autopilot For Small-Boat Approaching Maneuvers, Sin-Der Lee, Ching-Yaw Tzeng, Young-Zehr Kehr, Chih-Kai Kang, Chi-Chun Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents an image-processing-based fuzzy autopilot scheme for accomplishing small-boat approaching maneuvers in a harbor environment. In the proposed approach, two canvas targets are arranged in cascade on the quayside to form a leading line. The targets are detected by a charge coupled device (CCD) camera mounted on the bow of the boat, and their geometric centers are computed by a Hue- and Saturation-based image-processing scheme. The autopilot system calculates the current heading deviation and tracking deviation angles of the boat by analyzing the displacements of the target centers relative to the CCD center line. These angles are then …

An Analytical Solution To The Modified Mild-Slope Equation For Waves Propagating Around A Circular Conical Island, Sung-Shan Hsiao, Chun-Ming Chang, Chih-Chung Wen
An Analytical Solution To The Modified Mild-Slope Equation For Waves Propagating Around A Circular Conical Island, Sung-Shan Hsiao, Chun-Ming Chang, Chih-Chung Wen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
There are many analytical solutions to the mild-slope equation that employ Hunt’s direct solution of linear dispersion [7] to solve wave-scattering problems involving varying quiescent depths. The advantage of Hunt’s direct solution of linear dispersion is that it can extend the range of applicability of the mild-slope equation from long-wave to deep-wave conditions. However, because the bottom curvature and slope-squared terms are neglected, the mild-slope equation cannot preserve mass conservation. In this investigation, we derived an analytic solution of the modified mild-slope equation for a conical island by adopting Hunt’s direct solution of linear dispersion to be applicable to intermediate …

Shape Optimization Of One-Chamber Mufflers With Perforated Intruding Tubes Using A Simulated Annealing Method, Ying-Chun Chang, Min-Chie Chiu, Wang-Chuan Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
It has been noted that the application of high performance, compact mufflers is the future for modern factories where place is at a premium. However, as research on mufflers equipped with extended tubes has been exhausted, and frankly at the juncture, shown to be inadequate (unsuitable), attention has turned to mufflers conjugated with perforated intruding tubes which can dramatically increase acoustical performance. Therefore, the focus of this paper is not only to analyze the sound transmission loss (STL) of a one-chamber open-ended perforated muffler but also to optimize the best design shape within a limited space. In this paper, the …

Numerical Optimization Of A Three-Chamber Muffler Hybridized With A Side Inlet And A Perforated Tube By Sa Methodm, Min-Chie Chiu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Research on new techniques of multi-chamber mufflers equipped with a side inlet and an internal non-perforated tube has been well addressed and developed; however, the research work of multi-chamber mufflers in conjunction with side inlet and internal perforated tubes which may efficiently increase the acoustical performance is rare. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to not only analyze the sound transmission loss (STL) of three-chamber side mufflers with a perforated tube but also to optimize their best design shape under a limited space. In this paper, both the generalized decoupling technique and plane wave theory in solving the …
