Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study presents the chloride ion transport behavior of mortar from accelerated chloride migration test (ACMT). The water/cement ratio of mortars is 0.45, and the five volume fractions of fine aggregates (0%, 15%, 30%, 50% and 60%) were evaluated. After stored under different environment temperatures (25°C, 40°C, 60°Cand 80°C), the chloride ion passing through specimens was carried out with ACMT. From the Nernest-Planck equation and modified Fick’s second law, test data could be calculate the chloride migration coefficient of non-steady-state and steady-state. For mortar structure, dilution and tortuosity effects are positive effect to resist the penetration of Chloride ion. On …

Performance-Based Plastic Design And Energy-Based Evaluation Of Seismic Resistant Rc Moment Frame, Wen-Cheng Liao, Subhash C. Goel
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents first time application of the Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD) approach to seismic resistant reinforced concrete special moment frames (RC SMF). Four baseline RC SMF (4, 8, 12 and 20-story) as used in the FEMA P695 were selected for this study. Those frames were redesigned by the PBPD approach. The baseline code designed frames and the PBPD frames were subjected to extensive inelastic pushover and time-history analyses. It turns out that the work-energy equation in PBPD to determine design base shear can also be used to estimate seismic demands, herein called the energy spectrum method. In summary, this …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Bridge is the hub of the roads and plays a crucial role in transportation. In recent years, the age of most bridges in Taiwan has gotten old gradually; as a result, the bridges deteriorate and need to be fixed and maintained. Nevertheless, it is not easy to predict the timing of bridge deterioration, and such situation has become one of the important issues in introducing the concept of preventive maintenance. In fact, in order to control the condition of bridge deterioration, many countries have set up bridge management system and regulated methods and mechanism of inspection. The record of bridge …

Design Optimal Control Of Ship Maneuver Patterns For Collision Avoidance: A Review, Chia-Hung Shih, Po-Hsuan Huang, Saburo Yamamura, Chen-Yuan Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Although there have been lots studies about vehicular maneuvers on land or sea, maneuvers within a small area that require direction changes have rarely been discussed. Many reports on the arrival or departure of ships from ports have revealed more about what are safe and effective turning maneuvers within a narrow area. Convenient navigation systems for ship maneuvering should allow quick avoidance of obstacle to find the shortest distance in the whole seaway is important. This study proposes a review model that will satisfy optimal turning maneuvering anywhere and be applicable to any type of ship. However, the water-based environment …

The Improvement Of Heat Insulation For Roof Steel Plates By Triz Application, Ruey-Sen Chiu, Shao-Tsai Cheng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
More and more colored plates have been used on roofs in the steel buildings in Taiwan, such as roofs of high-technology factories and offices of large-scale construction sites. Facing the impacts of global economic crisis as well as the exhaustion of natural resources, we should seriously look at the issue of energy saving and try every possible method to save energy in daily life. In architecture industry, architects have devoted themselves to green buildings. However, there should be an inventive way to upgrade heat insulation of external building structures. The studies on this topic in Taiwan mainly focus on the …
Corrosion Related Property Improvement For Cement Mortar Applied To Marine Environment, Pei-Ying Chung, Hsien Hua Lee, Meng-Syun Yu
Corrosion Related Property Improvement For Cement Mortar Applied To Marine Environment, Pei-Ying Chung, Hsien Hua Lee, Meng-Syun Yu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
It is a well known fact that infrastructures in marine environments are subjected to corrosion attacks all the time. The most severe corrosion happens to the steel materials that are directly exposed in the marine environment, particularly for the portion exposed in the splash zone, where the air (oxygen) is embroiled with water causing a wet and dry alternately exerting environment. The most widely used material of marine infrastructure, such as reinforced concrete, is also subjected to deterioration damage from the marine environment. In this way, it weakens the impermeability of the material so that the sea water is allowed …

Numerical Study Of Thermophoresis On Aerosol Particle Deposition From Hiemenz Flow Through Porous Medium Onto A Stretching Surface, Jian-Sheng Huang, Ruey-Yih Tsai, Kuei-Hsun Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A theoretical study of aerosol particles responding to thermophoresis, involving the particle deposition rate onto a stretching permeable surface with internal heat source is proposed. The effects on particle transport mechanisms include Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, porosity, stretching surface, heat source, and suction/injection velocity. The governing equations of continuity, momentum, energy, and particle concentration are transformed using similarity analysis, and the solutions are obtained through appropriate numerical schemes. The predicted results show that if the thermophoretic and stretching parameters increase, the deposition velocity increases for a cold surface. However, the deposition velocity decreases rapidly for a hot surface as the thermophoretic …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Study of the slamming phenomenon is one of the most important branches of the floating structure dynamics. Experimental study of the floating structure dynamics can be very expensive because it requires a long wave flume and a moving model. Hence, numerical methods are considered to be very useful and efficient tools for modeling and dynamic analysis of floating structures. In the present paper, slamming induced impulsive loads are investigated firstly. Afterwards, dynamic response of a barge under the slamming excitation is studied, and the natural frequencies and mode shapes are determined, using the FE software package, ANSYS. Critical cross sections …
Effects Of Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion Fly Ash On The Properties Of Alkali-Activated Slag Cement Mortars, Hui-Mi Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper illustrates the result of a study on the influence of circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) fly ash, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sodium silicate (Na2SiO3), sodium phosphate (Na3PO4), and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) as activators on the workability, bleeding, setting time, compressive strength, shrinking, and absorption of the alkali-activated slag (AAS) cement mortars. The addition of CFBC fly ash, Na3PO4, and Na2CO3 shows decrease of workability. But with Na2SiO3, the workability increase was observed. The setting time of Na3PO4, NaOH, Na2SiO3, and Na2CO3 activated slag cement mortars was found to be much faster than the setting time of slag cement mortars. …

A Quasi-Orthogonal Correlator-Based Bpnn Pn Code Acquisition Scheme For Underwater Acoustic Dsss Communication, Jiang-Yao Chen, Shao-Wei Leu, Chin-Fen Lin, Shun-Hsyung Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper proposes a quasi-orthogonal correlator-based back propagation neural network (BPNN) pseudo-noise (PN) code acquisition scheme for underwater acoustic direct sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) communication. The main idea is to use short-length quasi-orthogonal correlators for coarse phase estimation and a BPNN based discriminator for fine phase calculation. When compared with other neuralnet based PN code acquisition schemes, the short quasiorthogonal correlators effectively locate possible phases of the received signal with high tolerance to interference and require no full-length correlation. These capabilities have been verified by extensive computer simulations and the results clearly show that the proposed scheme has the characteristics that …

The Relationship Between Accelerated Migration Time In Acmt And Ponding Time In Ponding Test For Cement-Based Materials, Yu-Sheng Chen, Ming-Chih Li, Yi-Wen Chan, Chung-Chia Yang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The salt ponding test has been widely used in recent year to evaluate the durability of cement-based materials. However, the duration of more than 90 days salt ponding is considered as time-consuming. In this study, the electrochemical technique (ACMT; Accelerated Chloride Migration Test) is applied to accelerate the movement of chloride ion in the cement-based materials to reduce the duration of testing time. The chloride profiles are obtained from ponding test with various ponding times and ACMT with different accelerated migration times. The total amount of chloride in specimens are calculated from the profiles and compared. Based on the total …

Multiple Scattering Of Sh Waves By An Embedded Truncated Circular Cavity, Deng-How Tsaur, Kao-Hao Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The region-matching technique is implemented to derive a series solution to the SH-wave scattering problem of an embedded truncated circular cavity. An introduced auxiliary boundary partitions the whole analyzed region into two subregions, whose displacement fields are expressed as a superposition of appropriate wavefunctions. Taking advantage of the method of images, the zero-stress boundary condition on the horizontal ground surface is satisfied automatically. Suitable Graf’s addition formulas facilitate the enforcement of boundary conditions on the artificial interface and curved cavity surface for determining the expansion coefficients. Effects of several parameters on steady-state surface motions are discussed. Transient changes in underground …

Ultimate Load-Bearing Capacity Of Self-Anchored Suspension Bridges, Chin-Sheng Kao, Chang-Huan Kou, Wen-Liang Qiu, Jeng-Lin Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a method of reduced stiffness coupled with step increments to simulate the nonlinear problem that occurs when a material is in the elasto-plastic stage. A set of equations was developed and used to analyze the ultimate loadbearing capacity and the failure process of a self-anchored suspension bridge. Also investigated here were the effects on the load-bearing capacity due to variations in the strength and stiffness of the four substructures and due to broken hangers. The results showed that variations in the material strength and the structural stiffness of the substructures can lead to different degrees of influence …

Numerical Study On Significance Of Wind Action On 2-D Freak Waves With Different Parameters, Shiqiang Yan, Qingwei Ma
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents a numerical study on how the significance of wind action differs when varying the wave parameters. The quasi arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element method (QALE-FEM) is used for this purpose. An improved model for wind-excited pressure and wind-driven current, which is recently developed by the authors of this paper [27], is coupled with the QALE-FEM. Many cases involving freak waves with different focusing time/point and frequency ranges under the action of winds are investigated. The results show that the significance of wind actions on freak waves strongly depends on the focusing time, the focusing point and the frequency …

A Color Image Authentication And Recovery Method Using Block Truncation Code Embedding, Shu-Chien Huang, Ching-Fen Jiang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A new method for color image authentication and recovery is proposed in this paper. To achieve this goal, the least significant bit (LSB) and the second LSB of the spatial domain were selected to embed the watermark. The watermark consists of two parts: authentication data and recovery data made by block truncation code and bitmap. According to the experimental results, the image embedded within the authentication data and recovery data can still preserve high image quality. The results also reveal that the tampered images can be successfully recovered with acceptable visual quality.

Semi-Analytical Solution For Radiation Of A Hollow Sphere With An Opening Hole In Finite Depth, Man-Sheng Dong, Guo-Ping Miao, Ju Fan, Ren-Chuan Zhu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An investigation is conducted on radiation of a submerged hollow sphere with an opening hole in finite water depth in this article. Based on the linear theory, the method of multipole expansions is used to obtain the fluid velocity potential in the form of double series of the associated Legendre functions with the unknown coefficients of an infinite set. In terms of the body surface boundary condition and the matching condition between the inner and outer flows at the hole, the complex matrix equations for the coefficients of the series are established. The infinite sets of matrix equations are solved …
Application Of Underwater Laser Scanning For Seafloor Shell Fragments Characterization, Chau-Chang Wang, Dajun Tang
Application Of Underwater Laser Scanning For Seafloor Shell Fragments Characterization, Chau-Chang Wang, Dajun Tang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Two features required for modeling high-frequency acoustic scattering from seafloor are roughness and discrete objects distributed on the seafloor. A laser scanner was deployed to acquire fine-scale bottom roughness off the coast of New Jersey in 2006. On the bathymetry map, it was found that the sites were covered by shell fragments. Cross-comparison between the laser reflection intensity and the bathymetry suggests that the shell fragments have a stronger reflection intensity than the seafloor. This phenomenon was confirmed by an indoor experiment on a simulated seafloor. An intensity-based algorithm was developed to detect shell fragments on the seafloor. The field …
Interactions Of Waves With An Array Of Tandem Placed Bottom-Mounted Cylinders, Baris Barlas
Interactions Of Waves With An Array Of Tandem Placed Bottom-Mounted Cylinders, Baris Barlas
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Diffraction of water waves with an array of bottommounted cylinders of circular cross section is studied. A vertically-integrated nonlinear dispersive wave model with inclusion of the wave breaking effect in a semi-empirical manner, in nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinate system is used for simulating linear and nonlinear wave forces on bottom mounted tandem placed circular cylinders. The wave model is in terms of the contravariant velocities. The mesh required is generated based on staggered grids on the freesurface. The matrix equation of the finite difference method is solved through an iterative approach at each time step. For outgoing waves Sommerfeld’s first order …

Effect Of Transverse Surface Roughness On The Performance Of Hydromagnetic Squeeze Film Between Conducting Truncated Conical Plates, Pragna Amratlal Vadher, Gunamani Deheri, Rakesh Manilal Patel
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An attempt has been made to study and analyze the behavior of a hydromagnetic squeeze film between conducting porous transversely rough truncated conical plates. The associated Reynolds' equation is solved with appropriate boundary conditions to investigate the behavior of performance characteristics. The results indicate that the performance of the bearing system gets enhanced vis-à-vis a bearing system working with a conventional lubricant. This article reveals that the negative effect induced by porosity and standard deviation can be overcome completely by the positive effect of the magnetization parameter and conductivities by choosing suitable aspect ratio and the semi-vertical angle in the …
Streamwise Dynamics Controlled Jet Spreading, Mixing And Physical Source Of The Vortices, Amalendu Sau, Robert R. Hwang
Streamwise Dynamics Controlled Jet Spreading, Mixing And Physical Source Of The Vortices, Amalendu Sau, Robert R. Hwang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Within the framework of the present investigation we perform Direct Numerical Simulations to study the role of streamwise dynamics in the jet spreading and mixing, and provide a clear understanding about the source of these important vortices in two-step rectangular sudden expansion flows. The present setup is designed to generate higher mass entrainment, and the system generated passive forcing provided the necessary impetus for the sustained growth/evolution of the streamwise vertices, which played the key role in the mixing enhancement. On the other hand, by suitably placing two tiny rectangular ‘tabs’ on the inlet channel walls, the nature of growth …
A 2d Chaos-Based Visual Encryption Scheme For Clinical Eeg Signals, Chin-Feng Lin, Boa-Shun Wang
A 2d Chaos-Based Visual Encryption Scheme For Clinical Eeg Signals, Chin-Feng Lin, Boa-Shun Wang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, we have developed a two-dimensional (2D) chaos-based encryption scheme that can be applied to signals with transmission bit errors in clinical electroencephalography (EEG) and mobile telemedicine. As opposed to one-dimensional (1D) chaos-based encryption, the proposed 2D schemes uses the concept of parallel processing to increase the encryption speed. An essential feature of the proposed scheme is that signals mapping of a 2D chaotic scrambler and a permutation scheme are used to obtain clinical EEG information that requires high-level encryption. Simulation results show that when the correct deciphering parameters are inputted, EEG signals with a transmission bit error …

Numerical Modeling Of A Dual Pontoon Floating Structure With A Liquid Container, Chai-Cheng Huang, Chih-Ting Feng, Hung-Jie Tang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A numerical model is developed to investigate the waveinduced dynamic properties of a dual pontoon floating structure (DPFS) with a liquid container on the top. This model has to deal with two kinds of fluid domain: one is the incident wave domain, while the other is the excited fluid domain in a sloshing container. The boundary integral equation method (BIEM) with linear element scheme is applied to forming a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The secondorder Stokes wave theory is adopted to give the velocity on the input boundary. The velocity potential and acceleration potential are solved simultaneously …

Improved Technique For Controlling Oscillation Of Coastal Morphological Modeling System, Yun-Chih Chiang, Sung-Shan Hsiao, Ming-Chung Lin
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Numerical modeling of coastal morphological evolution is a powerful tool for the planning and design of coastal engineering. The coastal morphological modeling system is based on the sediment conservation law, which couples modules for waves, wave-driven currents, and sediment transport rates. The numerical scheme for the sediment conservation law and nonlinear coupling between these modules can lead to dispersions, diffusions, spurious oscillations and instability problems that are still not well established. Filtering or artificial diffusion are often added to achieve stability. In this paper, several controlling oscillations schemes without filters are described. A stable morphological model is introduced with a …
