Design And Realization Of A Hybrid Intelligent Controller For A Twin Rotor Mimo System, Jih-Gau Juang, Kai-Ti Tu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An intelligent control scheme using a fuzzy switching mechanism, grey prediction and genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to a coupled nonlinear system, called a twin rotor multi-input multi-output system (TRMS). In real-time control, a Xilinx Spartan II SP200 FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is employed to construct a hardware-in-the-loop system through writing VHDL on this FPGA. The objective is to stabilize the TRMS in significant cross-coupled conditions, and to experiment with setpoint control and trajectory tracking. The proposed scheme improves the performance of the PID controller. Control gains and parameters of the fuzzy switching mechanism are obtained by GA. Simulation …

A Comparison Of Great Circle, Great Ellipse, And Geodesic Sailing, Wei-Kuo Tseng, Jiunn-Liang Guo, Chung-Ping Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An analytical and numerical comparison of great circle (GC) sailing, great elliptic (GE) sailing, and geodesic (Geod) sailing is presented. The comparison between GC and GE sailing addresses some problems whether the navigator and navigational software developers promptly have to use GE sailing or use hybrid sailing mixed with features of the GC sailing and GE sailing. This fact found here presents that the formulae tackling relationship of latitude and longitude of GC sailing also can be suited to the GE sailing except some calculation of GE sailing involving distance and course. The validity of effectiveness of proposed GE sailing …

The Variation Of Flexural Rigidity For Post-Tensioned Prestressed Concrete Beams, Ta-Heng Wang, Ran Huang, Tz-Wei Wang Jun 2013

The Variation Of Flexural Rigidity For Post-Tensioned Prestressed Concrete Beams, Ta-Heng Wang, Ran Huang, Tz-Wei Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The natural frequency of axial-loaded concrete beam decreases with increasing applied compressive force, and the natural frequency of tensioned cable increases with increasing tensile force. However, the variation of natural frequency of prestressed concrete beam (PCB) consisting of concrete and cable has rarely been discussed based on both |the rigorous mathematic model and experimental results. In this study, a testing program was conducted and Rayleigh's method was used to derive an approximate equation for computing natural frequency. The results indicate that (1) the natural frequency decreases with increasing prestressing force for PCB with eccentric parabolic tendon, but it is no …

A Piston-Type Porous Wave Energy Converter Theory, Ching-Yun Yueh, Shih-Hsuan Chuang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study investigates the performance of a piston-type porous wave energy converter (PTPWEC), which consists of a solid wall, a vertical porous plate, a transmission bar, a rigid block constrained by rollers, a spring, and a damper. The PTPWEC is subjected to dynamic external loading by wave actions. To simulate this dynamic system, a mathematical model is used with a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system. Linear wave theory governs the entire fluid domain, which is divided into two regions by the vertical porous plate. Darcy's law is applied to flow through the porous plate. Finally, this investigation employs an eigenfunction expansion to …

Design Optimization Of A Submerged Vane With Streamlined Profile For Sediment Management In Rivers, Huei-Tau Ouyang, Jihn-Sung Lai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The design of the submerged vane, a flow training structure for sediment management in rivers, is optimized using a Genetic Algorithm. The vane considered in this study has a foil-like sectional profile and a tapered outline. The sectional profile of the vane is based on two types of shape formulations: (1) NACA’s four-digit wing profiles, and (2) profiles comprising two Bezier splines. By using Elitist and Crowding factor models, the optimization proceeds by creating successively improved generations of vanes. The final design for the vane with NACA profile has higher lift yet larger drag. Conversely, the final design for the …

The Executive Model And Efficiency Analysis Of Power Intrachange, Tai-Ken Lu, Wen-Chi Chang Apr 2013

The Executive Model And Efficiency Analysis Of Power Intrachange, Tai-Ken Lu, Wen-Chi Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In recent years, the deregulation of power companies has been a subject of discussion in many countries. However, irrespective of the degree of deregulation of a power industry, its power systems still have the same basic structure for power generation, transmission, distribution and the end user. In most countries, the power industry has institutions dedicated to achieving improvements in its power systems in order to maintain reliable power supply. Power companies often establish power interchange support mechanisms with nearby power systems to ensure a stable power supply. One such mechanism is “power intrachange,” wherein a power system can compensate for …

Numerical Simulations And Wind Tunnel Studies Of Pollutant Dispersion In The Urban Street Canyons With Different Height Arrangements, Cheng-Hsin Chang, Jin-Shian Lin, Chii-Ming Cheng, Yung-Shan Hong

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Air pollution in big city areas resulting from exhaust emissions is a major urban problem. Often traffic pollution excess controls air pollution management decisions. There are a number of elaborate predictive models of pollutant dispersion and diffusion that address the effects of variable shapes of city buildings on pollutant concentrations, but few are fully validated. This study presents ventilation behavior in different street canyon configurations. To evaluate dispersion in a model urban street canyon, a series of tests with various street canyons with different height in upwind and downwind of street canyon are presented. These buildings were arranged in 2-D …

Further Results On Robust Exponential Stabilization For Time-Varying Delay Saturating Actuator Systems With Delay-Dependence, Pin-Lin Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The problem of delay-dependent exponential robust stabilization for a class of uncertain saturating actuator systems with time-varying delay is investigated. Novel exponential stability and stabilization criteria for the system are derived using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional combined with Leibniz-Newton formula. The issue of exponential stabilization for time-varying delay systems with saturating actuator using generalized eigenvalue problem (GEVP) approach remains open, which motivates this paper. The designed controller is dependent on the time-delay and its rate of change. All the conditions are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can solved efficiently by using the convex optimization algorithms. A state …

An Analytical Solution For Linear Long Wave Reflection By Two Submerged Rectangular Breakwaters, Huan-Wen Liu, Jiong-Xing Luo Apr 2013

An Analytical Solution For Linear Long Wave Reflection By Two Submerged Rectangular Breakwaters, Huan-Wen Liu, Jiong-Xing Luo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, an analytical solution for linear long wave reflection by two rectangular breakwaters is explored. A closed-form expression of wave reflection coefficient is obtained which finds two well-known analytical solutions to be its special cases, including wave reflection by a rectangular breakwater given by Mei in 1989 and wave reflection by an infinite step given by Lamb in 1932. It is found that the periodicity of the reflection coefficient as a function of kh existed for a single rectangular breakwater disappears for a pair of breakwaters, and zero reflection phenomenon mostly occurs for symmetrical breakwater structure. It is …

Vibration Suppression Of Train-Induced Multiple Resonant Responses Of Two-Span Continuous Bridges Using Ve Dampers, Ying-Jie Wang, Jong-Dar Yau, Qing-Chao Wei

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a study of reducing multiple resonant peaks of high-speed trains traveling over a two-span continuous railway bridge using visco-elastic (VE) dampers. The moving train is modeled as a series of two-degree-of-freedom (2 DOF) moving oscillators with identical intervals and the two-span continuous bridge as a Bernoulli-Euler beam with uniform span. Because of closely spaced frequencies of a continuous beam, the first several frequencies of the bridge would be excited to resonance during the passage of moving trains, which may result in multiple resonant peaks appearing on the response of train-bridge system. In order to reduce the multiple …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper proposes a passive fuzzy controller design for the discrete ship steering system that is represented by the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model with multiplicative noises. Applying the Lyapunov theory for guaranteeing mean square stability, the sufficient conditions are developed to design the fuzzy controller for the T-S fuzzy model with multiplicative noises. The sufficient conditions derived in this paper belong to the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) forms which can be solved by the convex optimal programming algorithm. Besides, the fuzzy controller is carried out by the concept of Parallel Distribution Compensator (PDC). Finally, the simulation results are proposed to …

Shape Evolution Of A Long Bubble Penetrating Liquids With Various Viscosities, Cheng-Hsing Hsu, Ching-Chuan Chang, Chia-Chuan Kuo, Kuang-Yuan Kung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper aims at the effect of gas flow and viscosity of the fluid on the profile of a long bubble. The gas flow controlled by a mass flow controller is injected into a tube filled with liquid silicon oil. The images of bubble profile are captured by a high-speed camera. The fractional converge of the liquid and the hollow ratio of the bubble is estimated by measuring the width of these images. The result shows that the values of Capillary number and Reynolds number increase as the gas flow rate increase under a constant viscosity. However, the hollow ratio …

The accuracy of the proposed method is verified in this study by comparing the estimated results with collected data from actual engineering projects, and the applicability of the new method to the engineering practice of track …

An Improvement Of Wave Refraction-Diffraction Effect In Swan, Aw-Guei Lin Apr 2013

An Improvement Of Wave Refraction-Diffraction Effect In Swan, Aw-Guei Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

SWAN, a wind wave model, has been modified to take into account wave refraction-diffraction effects from the extended mild-slope equation when wind waves pass through a extremely uneven sea bottom in the presence of current. In our modified model, the diffraction correction parameter introduced by Holthuijsen et al. [10] has been adjusted to better predict the combined effect of the higher-order bottom effect, wave-bottom interaction and wave-current interaction. After a preliminary analysis, the influence of the correction parameter is discussed, and a comparison is made between the original and the new phase-decoupled versions of SWAN through some typical examples of …

On The Influence Of The Mode-Shapes Of A Marine Propulsion Shafting System On The Prediction Of Torsional Stresses, Bin Tang, Michael J Brennan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Torsional vibration predictions and measurements of a marine propulsion system, which has both damping and a highly flexible coupling, are presented in this paper. Using the conventional approach to stress prediction in the shafting system, the numerical predictions and the experimental torsional vibration stress curves in some parts of the shafting system are found to be quite different. The free torsional vibration characteristics and forced torsional vibration response of the system are analyzed in detail to investigate this phenomenon. It is found that the second to fourth natural modes of the shafting system have significant local deformation. This results in …

An Experimental Study Of Regular Long Crested Waves Over A Crescent Type Shoal, Wen-Kai Weng, Jaw-Guei Lin, Chun-Sien Hsiao Apr 2013

An Experimental Study Of Regular Long Crested Waves Over A Crescent Type Shoal, Wen-Kai Weng, Jaw-Guei Lin, Chun-Sien Hsiao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Converting the ocean wave energy into electric power is one possibility of the development of alternative and nonpolluting sources of energy. Many researches concerning converters and their converting efficiency of wave power were developed and discussed in the last years. However, converting wave energy into electric power does not only depend upon converting system but condition of sea state essentially. A calm sea state with lower wave energy is difficult to drive converting device working and is unable to satisfy the minimum economical requirement. Unfortunately, wave heights in the sea state around Taiwan are mostly too smaller to extract the …

Criteria For The Initiation Of Modes Of Response Of A Caisson Subjected To A Breaking Wave Force, Jaw Guei Lin, Chi Chao David Tung Feb 2013

Criteria For The Initiation Of Modes Of Response Of A Caisson Subjected To A Breaking Wave Force, Jaw Guei Lin, Chi Chao David Tung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper concerns problems of a caisson subjected to a breaking wave force: (1) what are the possible modes of response and (2) the conditions initiate into these modes. These two questions have not been studied. The objective of this paper is to answer these two questions. However, the actual response of a caisson that takes place in each mode is not addressed in this study. A caisson placed on a horizontal frictional base, subjected to a concentrated horizontal force of short duration, applied to the seaward side face of the caisson and accompanied by a corresponding uplift force on …

Experimental Study Of The Reverse Conversion Of Wave Spectra, Beng Chun Lee, Yang-Ming Fan, Xiangbo Feng, Chia Chuen Kao Feb 2013

Experimental Study Of The Reverse Conversion Of Wave Spectra, Beng Chun Lee, Yang-Ming Fan, Xiangbo Feng, Chia Chuen Kao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The observed deep-sea wave data are most appropriate to use in the data assimilation technique. For wave stations (e.g., the Longdong data buoy station in the northeastern Taiwan Sea near the coast), wave data must be reverse-calculate deep-sea wave data for data assimilation applications because seafloor slopes in the northeastern Taiwan Sea are acute and the distances between wave interactions during propagation are shorter. Consequently, nonlinear effects arising from the topography become insignificant as waves approach the coast from the open sea. The proposed technique to reversecalculate the deep-sea wave spectrum from the near-shore wave spectrum, based on first-order wave …

Carbonation Service Life Prediction Of Existing Concrete Viaduct/Bridge Using Time-Dependent Reliability Analysis, Ming-Te Liang, Ran Huang, Shen-Ann Fang Feb 2013

Carbonation Service Life Prediction Of Existing Concrete Viaduct/Bridge Using Time-Dependent Reliability Analysis, Ming-Te Liang, Ran Huang, Shen-Ann Fang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper examines the predicted carbonation life of an existing concrete viaduct/bridge in the atmospheric environment based on probability and reliability indices. The probability is dependent upon the carbonation rate, carbonation remainder, concrete quality, and concrete cover. The carbonation life is defined as the service life of reinforced concrete (RC) or prestressed concrete (PC) structure at the beginning of time of steel corrosion when concrete cover surfers from carbonation and loses the protection function to steel. The carbonation life is equivalent to the initiation time of corrosion of reinforcement. Both the Chorng-ching viaduct and Wannfwu bridge were offered as illustrative …

Experimental Study Of Wave Breaking Criteria And Energy Loss Caused By A Submerged Porous Breakwater On Horizontal Bottom, Yi-Chun Liao, Jyun-Han Jiang, Yi-Ping Wu, Chung-Pan Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Study on the criteria of wave breaking and energy loss caused by a submerged porous breakwater on a horizontal bottom has been performed experimentally in a 2-D wave tank. Wave conditions as well as the freeboard of the submerged breakwater, with the front slope of 1/2 and 1/5, are varying in the experiments. Results show that almost all tested waves can be triggered to break when the ratio of the estimated equivalent deepwater wave height to the freeboard of the submerged breakwater is greater than one. Results also reveal that a milder front slope of submerged breakwater may not trigger …

Analysis Of Contact Problem Using Improved Fast Multipole Bem With Variable Elements Length Theory, Hai-Lian Gui, Qiang Li, Qing-Xue Huang, Guang-Xian Shen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper introduces a variable elements length theory to solve the change of contact area in contact problems. It avoids recalculating the whole coefficient matrix. In this theory, element length is changed instead of element number in contact boundary problem. This measure keeps the contact area unchanged and saves computing time. The iterative process is discussed and the error estimate is given. Fast multipole boundary element method (FM-BEM) is improved by the variable elements length theory. The improved FM-BEM is used to solve the contact problems of cubes and strip cold rolling process. The results of improved FM-BEM are compared …

Rainfall Prediction Using Innovative Grey Model With The Dynamic Index, Yong-Huang Lin, Chih-Chiang Chiu, Yong-Jun Lin Lin, Pin-Chan Lee

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Taiwan's special climate and landforms are affected by summer typhoons, with 78% of its rainfall occurring during the summer and autumn months. The range and the severity of disasters has increased in recent years, thanks in part to climate change, which has caused an unstable rainfall. Accurate rainfall predictions help to forecast rivers' water levels. This study proposes a new rainfall prediction model based on features of the rainfall system. In order to overcome the drawbacks found in the original grey model, a few corrections have been made to the new model. First, the dynamic index transformation is used to …

Flexural Strength Of Prestressed Concrete Beams With Tendon Wrapped By Plastic Sheets, Ta-Heng Wang, Ran Huang, Jiang-Jhy Chang Feb 2013

Flexural Strength Of Prestressed Concrete Beams With Tendon Wrapped By Plastic Sheets, Ta-Heng Wang, Ran Huang, Jiang-Jhy Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For post-tension prestressed concrete beams, both of tendons laid in metal duct and wrapped by plastic sheets are recognized as unbonded tendon by researchers, and the same equation is used to estimate the flexural strength. But the contacting conditions between tendon and its surrounding concrete are quite different for these two kinds of unbonded tendons. This study compares the flexural strength, crack distribution and crack width of beams with these two kinds of unbonded tendons and bonded tendon. The results reveal that the structural behavior of tendon wrapped by plastic sheets is between bonded tendon and tendon laid in metal …

The Correlation Between Air-Borne Salt And Chlorides Cumulated On Concrete Surface In The Marine Atmosphere Zone In North Taiwan, Yu-Sheng Chen, Hui-Jen Chiu, Yi-Wen Chan, Yung-Chang Chang, Chung-Chia Yang Feb 2013

The Correlation Between Air-Borne Salt And Chlorides Cumulated On Concrete Surface In The Marine Atmosphere Zone In North Taiwan, Yu-Sheng Chen, Hui-Jen Chiu, Yi-Wen Chan, Yung-Chang Chang, Chung-Chia Yang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study, the improved Japanese salt sampler was adopted for the air-borne salt sampling tests in coastal areas of northern Taiwan. Thirty-five collection stations were set up in the northern coastal areas to collect air-borne salt data monthly from 2006 to 2009. As the exposure of structures in the natural environment, the chloride on the concrete surface of RC structures would be washed away by the precipitation. Therefore, a two-phase collection method was used to get the total air-borne salt “Cair” and the adhesive air-borne salt “Cadh”. The statistic results showed that the percentage of Cadh/Cair has a high …

Solving Inhomogeneous Problems By Singular Boundary Method, Xing Wei, Wen Chen, Zhuo-Jia Fu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study makes the first attempt to extend the singular boundary method (SBM) to inhomogeneous problems in conjunction with the dual reciprocity method (DRM). The SBM is a new boundary-type meshless method and utilizes the fundamental solution to calculate the homogeneous solution of the governing equation of interest, where the inverse interpolation technique is designed to evaluate the origin intensity factor while overcoming the singularity of the fundamental solution at the origin. In this study, the DRM is employed to evaluate the particular solution of Poisson equation with multiquadratic functions. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SBM-DRM scheme are …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The mechanical/electrical/plumbing (MEP) systems employed in architectural engineering are complex and diverse. Improper integration at the equipment/pipeline interface results in interference and inappropriate sequence of jobs during installation can negatively influence the entire project. This study proposes useful guidelines and processes to avoid making mistakes in the integration of the interface, which would necessitate redoing work, increase costs, and delay completion. Eight criteria and three-level integration sequencing logic were adopted as the foundation for guidelines in the integration process. An eight-story laboratory with a total floor area of 20,000 m2 was selected to verify the proposed guidelines and processes. The …
