Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study uses an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore how respondents without engineering backgrounds view the road service quality in Taiwan. First, a first-stage questionnaire is conducted in Taiwan's Taoyuan County to develop an “Assessment Framework of Road Service Quality from the Point of View of Road Users”. The framework is used to assess the views of road users on road service quality. A second-stage questionnaire measures the priority placed by road users on the different aspects and assessment items of road service quality. The AHP results show that road users are most concerned …
Toughness Enhancement Of Airfield Concrete Pavement By Using Short Fiber, Muhammad Mubaraki
Toughness Enhancement Of Airfield Concrete Pavement By Using Short Fiber, Muhammad Mubaraki
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Few efforts have been made to understand the progressive failure of concrete pavements, especially the crack propagation in the concrete materials. More detailed information about concrete material, such as its fracture properties, is required along with the strength to better quantify crack propagation rates of varying concrete mixture proportions and constituents. The susceptibility of concrete pavements to crack growth may be eliminated by adding short steel or glass fibers. Therefore, an experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of adding short fiber, steel or glass, in controlling the fracture energy of concrete. The analysis was conducted for a …

Critical Assessment Of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement Performance Using 40-Years Of Condition Evaluation Data, Yichang (James) Tsai, Yiching Wu, James Lai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Georgia is considered to have one of the best concrete pavement design and materials in the U.S. Designs for joint plain concrete pavement (JPCP) have evolved over time. Analysis of long-term pavement condition data is still very necessary for evaluating the actual performance of different pavement designs and rehabilitation strategies to better understand the actual performance. Since the 1960s, various designs of jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP), including non-doweled pavement on a soil or soil cement base (ND), non-doweled pavement on an improved base (ND-IB), and doweled pavement on an improved base (D-IB), have been constructed at different periods of …
Diffusion In A Solid Cylinder Part I: Advancing Model, Cho-Liang Tsai, Ching-Chang Lin
Diffusion In A Solid Cylinder Part I: Advancing Model, Cho-Liang Tsai, Ching-Chang Lin
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An advanced diffusion model is used to calculate the concentration of a substance diffused in a solid cylindrical medium. The mathematical process in this study adopts Neumann’s algorithm for applying the advancing model to revise the solution derived by Carslaw and Jaeger. The modified solution clearly indicates a diffusion front which does not exist in the original model. Calculating the diffusion depth becomes possible and is novel for a solid cylindrical medium. The major contribution of this study is the application of the advancing model to solve the diffusion problem of a cylindrical medium in cylindrical coordinate system.

A Linearly Constrained Signal Subspace Projection Approach Developed To Detect Targets In Hyperspectral Images, Zay-Shing Tang, Lena Chang, Hsien-Sen Hung
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Hyperspectral images have been widely used for target detection. In general, target signatures should be known a priori for filter-based detection methods. However, the uncertainty of target signatures caused by the influence of atmospheric interference or other random noise degrades the detection performance. Therefore, developing a robust detection method is crucial in hyperspectral image analysis. In this study, a linearly constrained signal subspace projection approach for target detection is proposed. Instead of using a single constraint on target detection, an optimal filter with multiple constraints is designed using signal subspace projection (SSP). The SSP approach fully exploits the orthogonal property …

Voltage Sag Planning Of A Power System With Specially Connected Transformers Using Hybrid Differential Evolution Considering Iti Curve, Yao-Hung Chan, Chi-Jui Wu, Ying-Pin Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper outlines the voltage sag planning of a power system with a three-phase to two-phase transformer. We compared systems with V-V and Scott connection schemes using the hybrid differential evolution (HDE) method to determine the design parameters by taking into account the ITI curves and coordination of over-current relays. The proposed model comprises a node admittance matrix for the calculation of voltage sag in order to determine the severity of system sag after single or two-phase faults. These analytical equations are useful in the mathematical determination of optimal design parameters. We also used the proposed method to obtain suitable …

Experimental Study Of Seismic Performances Of Rc Bridge Columns With Cfst Column Embedded Lnside, Wen-Liang Qiu, Chin-Sheng Kao, Chang-Huan Kou, Jeng-Lin Tsai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
To improve the seismic performances of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns and to prevent columns from shear failure and core concrete crushing, high strength concrete filled steel tube (CFST) is put into RC columns to form a new kind of composite column. Through cyclical loading tests, the seismic performances of four columns are studied. The first column tested is a conventional RC column, the second one is a bonded composite column, the third one is an unbonded composite column, and the fourth one is an unbonded composite column whose axial force is composed of only bone by its CFST column. …
An O(T2) Boundary Layer In Sliding Mode For Time-Delay Systems, Ming-Chang Pai
An O(T2) Boundary Layer In Sliding Mode For Time-Delay Systems, Ming-Chang Pai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A new discrete-time integral sliding mode control scheme is proposed for a class of linear multi-input systems with state delays. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory and one-step delayed disturbance approximation, a sliding mode controller not only drives the sliding mode into the O(T2 ) boundary, but also achieves the O(T2 ) boundary for state regulation. A novel integral sliding surface is introduced so that reaching phase is eliminated. Chattering phenomenon is eliminated and the knowledge of upper bound of external disturbances is not required. The validity of the proposed control methodology is demonstrated by simulation results.

Numerical Simulation Of Water Entry Of Wedges Based On The Cip Method, Zhao-Yu Wei, He-Ye Xiao, Zhi-Dong Wang, Xiu-Hua Shi
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The hydrodynamic problems for water entry of wedges are studied by a constrained interpolation profile (CIP) based on Cartesian grid method. The CIP scheme was applied to the Cartesian grid based on flow solver, which was first described. The tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) scheme was applied to capture the free surface. The CIP method was extended to capture the dynamics in the water entry approach. The simulations were performed in three aspects. First, pressure distributions for the wedges entering into water with constant speed were predicted, and the results were compared with the similarity solutions by the …
Robust Bearing Estimation In Shallow Water Using Vector Optimization, Hai-Yan Song, Jie Shi, Chang-Yi Yang, Bo-Sheng Liu, Ming Diao
Robust Bearing Estimation In Shallow Water Using Vector Optimization, Hai-Yan Song, Jie Shi, Chang-Yi Yang, Bo-Sheng Liu, Ming Diao
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Correlated multi-paths may cause a biased bearing estimation in shallow water, so most existing methods make fully use of the multi-path nature and the underwater channel property to provide an unbiased bearing estimation. However, an imprecise knowledge of the underwater channel parameters or the array model mismatches will cause performance degradation, especially for the high-resolution methods. Therefore development of robust bearing estimation methods in shallow water is critically important. In this paper, a new approach to robust bearing estimation is proposed in the presence of underwater channel parameter uncertainties or array model mismatches. The proposed method is based on the …

Solving The Inverse Cauchy Problem Of The Laplace Equation Using The Method Of Fundamental Solutions And The Exponentially Convergent Scalar Homotopy Algorithm (Ecsha), Weichung Yeih, I-Yao Chan, Cheng-Yu Ku, Chia-Ming Fan
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, the inverse Cauchy problem of the Laplace equation is considered. Using the method of fundamental solutions, a system of linear algebraic equations can be obtained by satisfying the Cauchy boundary conditions on the overprescribe boundary points. The resulting linear algebraic equation is ill-posed and is treated by the exponentially convergent scalar homotopy algorithm (ECSHA). Four examples are adopted to show the validity of the proposed numerical scheme and it is concluded that the current approach can successfully resolve the ill-posedness of the inverse Cauchy problem even when the noise exists.
Nonlinear Breaker Characteristics And Impulse On A Sloping Bottom, Wen-Jer Tseng
Nonlinear Breaker Characteristics And Impulse On A Sloping Bottom, Wen-Jer Tseng
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents an experimental and theoretical investigation of nonlinear surface-wave propagation over a sloping bed. First, a second-order analytical solution for nonlinear surface-wave propagation over a sloping bed is derived using a perturbation method for the bottom slope and the wave steepness in an Eulerian system. Then, by transforming the flow field solution from an Eulerian system into a Lagrangian system, more accurate wave profiles are determined. New theoretical breaker characteristics and breaker impulses are derived using the kinematic stability parameter. Subsequently, a series of experiments to measure breaker characteristics and the breaker impulse are conducted in …

Effects Of The Cathodic Current On Alkali-Silica Aggregate Reaction, Jiang-Jhy Chang, Weichung Yeih, Cheng-Chin Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this study, we investigated whether the cathodic current accelerates the alkali-silica aggregate reaction. Variables considered were the water/cement (w/c) ratio, initial alkali content, and cathodic current. The crack initiation time, crack mouth opening history, and microhardness values were monitored to examine the effect of the cathodic current on crack initiation and propagation due to the alkali-silica aggregate reaction. In addition, chemical titration was performed to determine the amount of accumulated sodium and potassium ions to support our viewpoints. The results showed that the crack initiation time shortened with an increase in the initial alkali content, w/c ratio, and/or cathodic …

A prototype C-band pyramidal horn antenna was fabricated after using High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software to simulate, analyze, and optimize the design parameters. The pyramidal horn antenna was designed to operate as a key detection component for disaster prevention and warning instruments in the domestic development of water-level radar sensor (WLRS). Experimental measurements showed the horn operating with a bandwidth of ~ 800 MHz from 5.4 GHz to 6.2 GHz with the central frequency at 5.8 GHz. The voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) in the operating frequency range and the radiation pattern gains were measured to be smaller than …
Fuzzy Assessment On Reservoir Water Quality, Ruey-Tyng Lin, Wen-Cheng Huang
Fuzzy Assessment On Reservoir Water Quality, Ruey-Tyng Lin, Wen-Cheng Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Carlson's Trophic State Index (CTSI) has long been used in the Taiwan region to assess reservoir eutrophication, however this approach can often lead to confusion because the assessment criteria for CTSI (such as Secchi disk Depth) can be degraded by factors such as turbidity, which does not actually reflect the increased eutrophication. Mountainous subtropical islands suffer from serious stormdriven erosion problems, leaving reservoir water quality subject to seasonal weather conditions, torrential rains, typhoons and turbidity. Thus the CTSI alone may be insufficient or inappropriate at certain times to evaluate water quality. In pratice, we found that this indicator could produce …

Study On Optimized Hull Form Of Basic Ships Using Optimization Algorithm, Hee-Jong Choi, Dong-Woo Park, Myung-Soo Choi
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In order to achieve minimum resistance for a ship hull, we used an optimization algorithm and computational fluid dynamics to develop a hull-form design. An ITTC 1957 modelship correlation line formula was used to estimate the frictional resistance coefficient, and the wave-making resistance coefficient was evaluated by the Rankine source panel method with nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions. The geometry of the hull surface was represented and modified by a B-spline surface-modeling technique during the optimization process. Wigley and series 60 (CB = 0.60) hulls were selected to obtain an optimized hull that produces minimum resistance. Experimental tests were carried out …

Improvement In Convergent-Types Of Micromixers By The Use Of Plates, Chin-Tsan Wang, Hong-Chang Zhou
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Micromixers have a wide application in the biomedical engineering and chemical industry. The passive micromixer is now widely studied because it is simple and easy to fabricate. In this study single plates applied in a convergent-type flow channel are utilized to enhance the flow mixing at a lower Reynolds number. Results show that good flow mixing could be achieved in a convergent-type flow channel. The highest flow mixing efficiency, 0.974, is found at the optimal combination of Re = 80 and plate dimensions of J = 45 μm, G1 = 15 μm, and G2 = 3 μm. Furthermore, the flow …

Estimated State Feedback Fuzzy Control For Passive Discrete Time-Delay Multiplicative Noised Pendulum Systems, Wen-Jer Chang, Chun-Hung Lin, Cheung-Chieh Ku
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper develops a fuzzy controller design method via estimated state feedback scheme for discrete-time nonlinear stochastic time-delay systems which are presented by Takagi– Sugeno fuzzy model with multiplicative noises. The proposed design method is accomplished by the concept of parallel distributed compensation. Using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii function and passivity theory, the stability conditions are derived to guarantee the stability and attenuation performance. An algorithm is proposed in this paper to solve the derived stability conditions that belong to non-strict linear matrix inequality problems. Moreover, the discrete Jensen inequality and free-weighting matrix technique are employed to decrease the conservatism of the …

A Novel Approach To Solve The Great Circle Track Based On Rotation Transformation, Chih-Li Chen, Tsung-Hsuan Hsieh, Tien-Pen Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The great circle track (GCT) is composed of several rhumb lines in practice. Given the initial conditions, the waypoints along the GCT can be determined by the navigator. To reduce the complex calculation in a space system, transforming the system into a planar coordinate one is considered. Thus, an idea of the plane of the celestial meridian in celestial navigation is proposed to determine the waypoints, which are presented in equator coordinate system and horizontal one. For locating the waypoints on the GCT, the rotation transformation is introduced to derive the governing equations for the computation procedures with respect to …

An Event-Triggered Transmission Policy For Networked L2-Gain Control, Jenq-Lang Wu, Yuan-Chang Chang, Xin-Hong Chen, Tsu-Tian Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper considers the design of networked feedback controllers with more efficient allocation of network resources. With a given admissible controller, an L2-gain preserving event-triggered transmission policy is proposed for determining whether the currently measured state at the sensor node should be sent to the controller through the network for updating control signal. In this way, not all the measured data are sent and then the network traffic in a networked control system can be reduced. An algorithm is proposed to enlarge the transmission boundary of the event-triggered transmission rule for increasing inter-transmitting times. An illustrative example is given for …

A Comparison Of Float Ownership Issues For Construction Projects Between Taiwan And China, Ming-Teh Wang, Su-Ling Fan, Chi-Chen Tsai, Luh-Maan Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Float ownership is a controversial issue in construction projects. This study, which focuses on Taiwan and China, finds that attitudes regarding float ownership differ among stakeholders with different national and occupational backgrounds. To avoid disputes, practitioners should notice these differences before signing contracts. This study uses surveys to identify the potential differences in attitude regarding three important float ownership issues. The results vary from a previous study undertaken in the United Kingdom. The major findings of the study include: (1) contracts need to include clauses related to float ownership; (2) Taiwanese contractors and Chinese owners tend to view the float …

A Modified Algorithm Of Steepest Descent Method For Solving Unconstrained Nonlinear Optimization Problems, Chein-Shan Liu, Jiang-Ren Chang, Yung-Wei Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The steepest descent method (SDM), which can be traced back to Cauchy (1847), is the simplest gradient method for unconstrained optimization problem. The SDM is effective for well-posed and low-dimensional nonlinear optimization problems without constraints; however, for a large-dimensional system, it converges very slowly. Therefore, a modified steepest decent method (MSDM) is developed to deal with these problems. Under the MSDM framework, the original global minimization problem is transformed into a quadratic-form minimization based on the SDM and the current iterative point. Our starting point is a manifold defined in terms of the quadratic function and a fictitious time variable. …

An Experimental Field Study Using A Flexible High-Strengh Net Breakwater For Shore Protection, Chyan-Deng Jan, Ta-Hsiung Peng, Shih-Jen Huang, Hung-Chu Hsu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Shorelines are subjected to severe erosion because of the action of perennial waves. Although traditional rigid structures have historically been constructed as coastline protection devices, they do not always work effectively, and certain coastal areas such as Shuang-Chun beach in Tainan, Taiwan, continue to experience serious erosion due to damaged and ineffective structures. The necessity of shore protection has been recognized in recent years, and alternative solutions are being sought. In this paper, we present a high-strength-net device that acts as a flexible breakwater to reduce wave energy, induce sediment deposition, and offer a more economic and innovative method for …

Contour Data Acquisition System For Electric Vehicle Distance Estimation System, Kuew Wai Chew, Chee Ken Leong
Contour Data Acquisition System For Electric Vehicle Distance Estimation System, Kuew Wai Chew, Chee Ken Leong
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The conventional distance estimation system only uses a constant speed and a constant level of road elevation to estimate the driving range of a vehicle. This technique leads to low prediction accuracy. In this project, a new estimation technique namely the Contour Positioning System (CPS) for an electric vehicle is proposed. The CPS provides a more reliable estimation of the electric vehicle battery energy usage by taking into consideration additional factors such as road elevation and regenerative braking energy. In order to perform the CPS calculation, first and foremost, the elevation profile of the selected destination must be determined. In …
Periodic Damage Evaluation Of Aging Offshore Jackets Based On Continuous Dynamic Tests, Fu-Shun Liu, Hong-Chao Lu, Wei-Ying Wang, Dong-Ping Yang
Periodic Damage Evaluation Of Aging Offshore Jackets Based On Continuous Dynamic Tests, Fu-Shun Liu, Hong-Chao Lu, Wei-Ying Wang, Dong-Ping Yang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study proposes a new method for evaluating the damage of aging offshore platforms, based on dynamic tests. The proposed method involves a new damage indicator for reducing the effects of occurred damages accumulated before the first measurement. One theoretical improvement is that the requirement of using the stiffness matrix of the finite element model to replace that of the measured model can be ignored in calculating the modal strain energy of the measured model. The other development is that the proposed approach can be used for providing reasonable evaluations of damages that occurred between two adjacent dynamic tests. This …
