Settlement Of Large Embankment Construction Adjacent To A Buried Gas Pipeline — A Case History In Settlement Mitigation Using Lightweight Fill, Bret N. Lingwall, Scott Anderson

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

As part of the $1.7 Billion I-15 CORE highway reconstruction project in Utah, several new or enlarged large embankments were constructed adjacent to existing buried utilities. Lightweight fill was selected as the technology to limit distress to the adjacent utilities. In order to estimate the impact from new construction to the utilities, settlement estimates for the lightweight embankment were performed using traditional settlement estimating techniques. Numerical models using FLAC3D were then performed to refined estimates. Estimates of lightweight embankment foundation settlements from this construction were obtained from the finite difference modeling. Three-dimensional numerical modeling was used in order to evaluate …

The modelling of leachate generation and transport is important for estimating the possible groundwater pollution below the sanitary landfills. The numerical solution of the mathematical models for the total solids (inorganic) and chemical oxygen demand (organic) transport is presented. The existing one dimensional leachate transport model which accounts for advection and diffusion is modified with the addition of desorption term and the simulation results are compared for different case studies from the literature. The maximum error is reduced to 28.24 % with modified inorganic model against 38.93 % with the existing model for the TS concentration when simulated with literature …

Soil Property Improvement Using Slag Binder, Gennadii Boldyrev, Ilya Idrisov Apr 2013

Soil Property Improvement Using Slag Binder, Gennadii Boldyrev, Ilya Idrisov

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In the majority of cases this is cement, which is used for soil improvement both for sandy soils and clays in order to increase its strength and reduce its compressibility. However this effect could be reached by using lime or in some cases slag binder for soil improvement. Comparing with cement and lime blast furnace slag used for improvement of soft clays prove more effective. Soils can be improved by means of wet soil mixing or dry soil mixing. The result is that we get a new composite material and its strength is much higher when comparing with natural soils. …

The Use Of High Strength Geosynthetics In Deep Soil Mixed Levee Foundations, Brian C. Baillie Apr 2013

The Use Of High Strength Geosynthetics In Deep Soil Mixed Levee Foundations, Brian C. Baillie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The construction and design of flood protection embankment levees within coastal areas has become a focal point for infrastructure management. The levees are usually constructed over soils with very poor bearing capacity due to their proximity to flood plains. The foundation soils create issues with long-term settlement, changing the protection height and creating the need to periodically build the levee back to the design height. In order to reduce settlements and the maintenance required to preserve design height protection, a deep foundation is needed for proper long term load transfer. Deep soil mixing (DSM) has become a popular deep foundation …

Use Of Porous Concrete And Scoria Bases To Clean Groundwater Recharge, Kevin T. Harker, James Mahar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The City of Pocatello, Idaho does not currently treat its storm water, but rather collects runoff in detention basins or discharges it into the Portneuf River. Nitrates from fertilizers and petroleum products enter local waterways and ultimately groundwater supplies. Porous concrete is regarded as a green product and has storm water filtering capabilities. Idaho State University (ISU) has been studying the use of scoria (vesicular basalt) to retain petroleum contaminants which migrate through porous concrete collection systems placed on driving surfaces. At present, ISU is conducting laboratory experiments using a physical model consisting of a porous concrete slab made with …

Wsasw Application For Soil Dynamic Properties In Soft Soil Investigation At Kelang, Malaysia, Sri Atmaja P. Rosyidi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

In seismic wave measurements, soil dynamic parameters, i.e., shear wave velocity and shear modulus are determined from a dispersion curve of phase velocity with employing the theory of elasticity of soils. In this paper, a developed technique from Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW), namely as the Wavelet Spectrogram Analysis of Surface Waves (WSASW) is introduced for measurement of the soil dynamic properties at soft marine clay soils sites. This technique has capability to localize the interested response spectrum of surface waves, to reconstructed spectrograms of noisy seismic waves and produces the enhanced phase data to develop the phase velocity …

Deep Excavation In An Urban Area: A Case Study, Mohammad Sharif Rajabi, Farzin Kalantary Apr 2013

Deep Excavation In An Urban Area: A Case Study, Mohammad Sharif Rajabi, Farzin Kalantary

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Due to regulations requiring provision of car park in the typical multi-story buildings in the urban areas and the high cost of land, deep excavation adjacent to existing structures have become common-place in Iran. Limiting lateral as well as vertical displacement of the adjacent structures has proven to be a major geotechnical challenge especially in the coarse grained alluvium of Tehran where determination of geotechnical parameters is tedious. Often active temporary support methods such as "rigid pad – anchoring" and/or "anchored soldier piles" are used in combination with nailing. However, arriving at the optimum design for such projects for the …

Effects Of Arching On Measurement Of Embedded Pressure Cell In Embankment Dam, Dorsa Elmi, Ali Asghar Mirghasemi Apr 2013

Effects Of Arching On Measurement Of Embedded Pressure Cell In Embankment Dam, Dorsa Elmi, Ali Asghar Mirghasemi

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Field observation and monitoring earth structures is vital to design the structure safely and efficiently. Among different types of instruments, earth pressure cells (EPCs) are used to measure soil pressure in embankment dams, which are not proved to be entirely satisfactory. Presence of cells and installation methods usually affect the accuracy of total stress measurements. Since earth pressure cells are prone to damage by large and sharp stones or by using heavy compaction rollers, one excavates a trench and place EPC within fine grained soil which is compacted with light-weight machines. This nonconformity results in local arching between the installation …
